Have you looked at the calendar lately? Can you believe it’s 2019? My, how those years just keep rolling by… When the calendar flips over it always feels like a fresh start; a mini reset. That ‘change’ can be in the air. I love using this time of year to find out what I’d like to accomplish over the year. Less of a ‘New Year’s Resolution’ and more like a goal list with a long time to finish. I find resolutions can be too absolute and hard to complete. Once you lose momentum, the mood can quickly drop. Then it just starts rolling in the wrong direction or stops altogether. The goal is to build and achieve over the year. Don’t be short-sighted and think of a significant goal with a timeframe that’s unobtainable. Be realistic, but dedicated. You can do it! The best way to have a good 2019, is to enjoy it, embrace it and SHARE it. If you have a goal but don’t tell anyone, you’re accountable to no one. Setting a mark is a great idea, but creating a firm plan of action and asking for help and guidance is the key to success. We’re human, we’re designed to be around others and support one another. Make time to encourage those around you, but also don’t be afraid to receive help either! Together we can all make 2019 phenomenal!

Avena Tips Dear Avena, This winter has been extra hard. I’ve decided to travel for a bit, somewhere nice and hot. Any recommendations to look into health wise before I go (or during and after)? Travel is always a new and exciting time, but you have to realize your body is now going to be exposed to a whole new world; new cuisine, water, environment, athletic demands, and other outside factors (airplanes). Many times when we go somewhere it’s with a purpose; whether it be an adventure or R & R. The idea is that it’s different from your usual. This is what you should focus on before you travel.

You can prepare by doing little things prior such as drinking enough water in the days leading up to your travel. You can increase your probiotics and fermented food in your diet the week before you go to help create a stable base before you travel outside. Once there, try and keep your food simple and as close to your regular routine as possible. Travel is a gift; and one that we should relish! You don’t want to bring back unwanted souvenirs, so keeping it simple and being prepared are great ideas.

How do your bowels affect nutrient absorption By Kameron Tarry

The bowel places a fundamental role in our overall well-being, and that includes how we digest and absorb our nutrients. When your body’s ability to digest your food is impacted in any way, this affects everything ‘down the line’ when it comes to the digestive tract; those areas that experience the most significant impact are your small and large intestines. Undigested food goes into these areas and begins to clog up the vicinity, acting as a barrier or filter, and slowing the progress of any nutrients from getting through or being seen by your body. When looking at the utilization of those harder to get nutrients like vitamins and minerals, that they require so much to be present to be accessible.

The problem is when items fall through the cracks, they’re not always caught right away. Soon they start to pile up as missing or deficient. At this point, your body is beginning to feel the negative impact, and a cascade will begin to form. The Negative Effects of Mal Absorption Low proteins mean your minerals will have a harder time to get used. Minerals that help create hormones, enzymes, support bones and are essential for the utilization of vitamins. Letter From the Vice President’s Desk

Enzyme Formulation Delays Some of you are aware of the delay in our enzyme production. I want to take this time to chat with you about what happened. This product was postponed by excessive delays from Health Canada to provide an updated NPN number. In June we were notified that our approved producer of the beet fibre we had been using (as our alternative to magnesium stearate), had decided to stop producing it, and it would no longer be available in the market. We quickly found a replacement: Rice complex made of rice bran (like the E-Fusion). We submitted this change to Health Canada in early July 2018. Legally we are not allowed to blend, mix, or move forward using this change of ingredients until Health Canada approves it. This process usually is 2-4 weeks, but this is where the delay occurred. Finally getting approval from Health Canada in the first week of November, we were able to start our 12-week process. This situation put enormous stress on our manufacturing facility as Avena was already running very low on stock, and had been anticipating the whole process to be completed by late September. We regret that this situation to have happened, especially in the Christmas season, but it was merely out of our hands. We will aim to be more proactive and ready, but the fact remains we can only control so much. Our goal is to produce an excellent, most effective Natural Health Products that we can to give our clients the best possible outcomes. The great news is you can counter this decline by being aware and taking steps to help your body. One of the first places to start is with the sun and the lack of which directly impacts vitamin D production. If in the summer you’re outside for 5 minutes with about 1 square inch of skin that can ‘see’ the sun, your body should be able to make the required vitamin D for the day. This is less easy to accomplish in the winter. I should mention this happens to all of us, even with the summer sun, as so few go outside for any sustained duration of time, there’s always a filter between us and the sun. It is more than just vitamin D though, this is only one example. The best way to help is to keep ensuring you’re getting your minerals, vitamins, and all the elements necessary to use them. We highly encourage fresh greens over the winter. These are naturally high in minerals - if you’re not getting enough the Superfood is your answer; a concentrated and easy to take your greens (powder or caps) that is going to give you wheelbarrows worth of servings of greens each and every time.

Enjoy some of the Avena Team’s favourite recipes. Never Dull, ALWAYS exciting, refreshing, and fun!

a n g a s a L w a R G our met Ingredients Lasagna Sheets Zucchini & yellow Squash- thinly sliced and marinated in apple cider vinegar. Meat Sauce Olive oil, walnuts, sundried tomatoes, sage, light soy sauce and seasonings. Blend all in the food processor. Béchamel Sauce Macadamia nuts, cashews, pine nuts, lemon juice and seasonings. Blend all. Creamy Spinach

Directions 1. Spread tomato sauce on the bottom of the 2" Pan. 2. Arrange alternate layers of marinated zucchini and Yellow squash, crisscross wise. 3. Spread spinach mixture evenly on top of the layered zucchini and yellow squash. 4. Spread the meat sauce over the spinach mixture evenly. 5. Spread béchamel sauce evenly.

Spinach, parsley, cilantro, onion, cashew nut and seasonings. Roughly chop and mix well.

6. Follow the arranging of tomato sauce, zucchini, spinach mixture and meat sauce until you have made 3 layers.

7. Let the pan rest overnight in the cooler.

Basil, pine nuts, olive oil, garlic and seasonings. Blend all in the food processor. TOMATO SAUCE Cherry tomatoes, beefsteak tomatoes, oregano and seasonings. Roughly blend all in the food processor.

8. Remove the pan from the cooler. 9. Carefully cut the lasagna into the desired shape. 10. Garnish with Pesto sauce, fresh basil and cherry tomatoes. 11. Serve and enjoy!
