Welcome to the Summer Edition of our News & Views. Summer has to be most favourite time of the year, and it’s easy to see why! Long days and warm nights make for the best time to be outside and enjoy nature; if that’s home gardens, wild national parks, or just a perfect Sunday drive. It’s like we naturally gravitate to use this season for nature-meditation. Just ‘taking in’ our surroundings and beauty of the world. Take the time to focus on yourself. One way that’s not as easy with the more fabulous days is by getting enough sleep. So, don’t forget to sleep this summer! We know it’s harder to rest well when it’s warm out and bright out, so make the extra effort count! Next to sleep is WATER. Most of us don’t get enough water in our bodies on a regular day, but with extra movement and activity combined with the summer sun, it becomes critical! Hydration should remain a pivotal focus year-round, and summer is no exception if you want to spice it up to try adding some fruits or berries to add flavour. The important thing is to find something to appreciate and look at with gratitude. Those rainy days, they’re okay because it means rain and moisture for farmers, it makes the trees and grass green. Don’t forget there’s always that rainbow. Find JOY this summer even if it’s in something small and it will carry forward and blossom

I’ve heard a lot about Lyme’s disease, and with summer approaching I’m worried about camping and hiking and being exposed. Any suggestions?
Hi there, fantastic question and one we’ve been getting a few times. So, Lyme’s is possible with bites from infected ticks, it’s bacterial in nature. To keep it simple, we can talk about what to do before or right after. To keep your immune system high, a diet low in processed sugar is ideal. Keeping things as high raw and fresh as possible is suggested. There are also products that can help your immune system; these would be our Probiotics, Enzymes with Protease (Enhanced, Super Digestive and Induvial Enzymes). Antioxidants that are immune system boosting, is our E-Fusion and Electric C are great as well.

Antioxidants Where can you find Antioxidants? What are they? Have you ever heard of Antioxidants'? They're everywhere! We're seeing them added to foods and all of these other supplements and it's hard even to understand what they are, or what they do. The most significant boost to keep it simple is they help fight against free radicals. So maybe instead of learning what we're struggling with, let's first look at the opponent and what we're fighting against. What are free radicals? Free radicals are a naturally produced byproduct of our body functioning, mostly from mitochondria. Just like in many chemical reactions when the engine of the body starts running (mitochondria), then some exhaust happens. This is where those free radicals come in. Your body naturally and consistently creates these reactive items. These free radicals if left unchecked, can damage DNA, proteins and other membranes. Leading to more significant health challenges that build and build if left unchecked. (Essentially, it's the slow ageing process of our bodies.) Where do you find free radicals? Predominantly they'll be cruising through the bloodstream, and they're just waiting to encounter something to pair or bond with; what we don't want is them attacking healthy cells in their attempt. Don't think they're only in your blood though; these pesky pals can be found in any of the body where there's cellular metabolism, aka anywhere (blood, bones, nerves, muscles).

Our bodies will naturally produce a small about of antioxidants, enough that in a perfect world with no outside influences should be able to maintain balance. What happens though in reality isn't always what happens in books and paper. There is constant outside noise that disrupts and tip the scales in the wrong direction. Things like lousy air (smoking), stress, other health problems can all pile together to make the workload too much for your body to handle solo. That's why we can add in antioxidants conventionally through food and supplements. Fresh food is the best place to get your antioxidants, look no further than fruits (and berries). The more colourful the food, the better the chances of high nutrient value. Berries, in general, are going to have higher antioxidants per serving, but there are other sources too from the plant kingdom tea. How do Antioxidants relate to ageing? The roaming free radicals don't only affect our cellular DNA but the cell membranes as well. These cell walls should be naturally flexible and fluid. What can happen is the more exposed these cells are too reactive Oxygen the stiffer they become, making them less porous and slowing down their overall function. This is where the ageing comes in; because when the fluidity of the cell hardens, everything begins to slow, and production and communication are affected. One of the best ways to slow down the ageing process from the inside out is through antioxidants! With food based and supplemental based - we don’t want our bodies to stop running altogether which means there will always be cellular ‘waste’ (RNS & ROS) the idea is to neutralize them before
How Antioxidants Help If maximum health or just general wellness is our goal, antioxidants are a crucial piece to be used. It may seem like a pawn on the chessboard, but a useful tool it is! Super Digestive Enzymes: While there are only four antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and catalase), one happens to be in our Super Digestive Enzymes Catalase. Let’s go Deeper in to Vitamin E
To begin, your body creates two types of reactive byproducts Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and Reactive Nitrogen Species (RNS). It's these two compounds that antioxidants target in their role (even though one is listed as Nitrogen). Vitamin E has many different 'types' within its group; it splits into multiple ways. The most prevalent and recognized of which is Alpha Tocopherol. This type of Vitamin E works specifically against the ROS and leaving the RNS alone. If you were only to consume more significant of Alpha-Tocopherol you could leave your body open to DNA damage and inflammation from the RNS (if left unchecked or countered with a different antioxidant). Gamma Tocopherol, a lesser known type of Vitamin E, works primarily against the RNS and conversely doesn't do much for the ROS. This is precisely why you should get a VARIETY of Vitamin E's from different foods and a spectrum of antioxidants as well. If you focus all your efforts on one problem AREA (ROS/RNS) through high amounts of a single nutrient, you can leave yourself vulnerable to the other. Just as in the natural world you rarely if ever find isolated ingredients as they’re unbalanced, the idea of supplementing with only Alpha Tocopherol will put you at a disadvantage. An ingredient often labelled as evil and misused. Salt is, in reality, critical for health! The difference is that we need the right amount of salt, and it’s a fine line. Too much salt can lead to health problems: persistent thirst, swelling in strange places, frequent urination, regular mild headaches/foggy brain, high blood pressure, stomach ulcers, kidney problems (stones). Too little salt can also lead to health problems: insulin resistance problems, weight problems, kidney problems, elevated blood cholesterol and high blood pressure and high heart rate. What makes the salt balance so hard is the sodium/ salt added into processed foods for flavouring and ‘enhancement’ but industry over-uses salt. On the flip side, when you begin to eat healthier and remove a lot of those same processed foods, your body still needs good salt. (This is probably why celery juice is so favourite nowadays, celery is naturally high in salt.) It’s just one more area to keep a watch on to make sure your salt levels are right where they should be, your hydration and cellular support require it!

Water: Without it we have nothing! As soon as you feel thirsty your body is already dehydrated! More than half of our bodies are made of water. We need water to live! Water is more important than food, you can go days without nourishment but you can’t survive very long without water. It is critical to good health to replenish your water constantly. The best way to do this is to resupply your body with water regularly. The old standard of 8 x 8oz glasses doesn’t work for everyone. The amount of water you drink should be as unique to you as the rest of your diet and lifestyle. Find out how much your body requires to maintain itself, then adjust for any activity. Pure water will hydrate you the best, liquids like juice, soups or broths may nourish, but will be interpreted by the body as food, whereas pure water doesn’t require digestion. Also, ensure that you are drinking quality water. Poor water can do as much damage as too little water—always remember your water FACTS.

Avocado Strawberry Caprese 1/3 cup (80 mL) balsamic vinegar 1 cup (135 g) hulled and sliced strawberries 1 cup (160 g) grape or cherry tomatoes, halved One medium ripe avocado, pitted and diced 1/3 cup (8 g) loosely packed basil leaves, chiffonade cut 1 1/2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil Pink Himalayan salt or fine sea salt, to taste Freshly ground black pepper, to taste Toasted sesame seeds or chopped pecans, for serving Directions: In a small saucepan, bring the vinegar to a simmer over medium heat. Once the vinegar starts to simmer, reduce the heat to medium-low, and simmer for 6 to 10 minutes, uncovered, until the vinegar thickens, and decreases in volume by half. Set aside.

Meanwhile, add the strawberries, tomatoes, avocado, and basil into a large shallow bowl. Drizzle on the oil and gently toss until the veggies are coated. Season generously with salt and pepper and stir again just briefly. Scatter on your desired amount of toasted seeds or nuts. Drizzle on all of the balsamic reduction. Serve immediately. This salad is best enjoyed fresh, but leftovers can be stored in an airtight container for a few hours if necessary.

Mint Chip Banana Ice Cream Four frozen bananas cut into chunks One avocado 1/2 teaspoon mint extract 2 - 3 tablespoons cacao nibs or chocolate chips 1/4 teaspoon spirulina or matcha optional (for colour) Directions: Add all the ingredients to a food processor and process on high until smooth and creamy. Scrape down the sides as needed. For a harder texture, transfer the ice cream to a glass container and freeze overnight. If you enjoy "soft serve,â€? serve ice cream immediately. If freezing overnight, when you're ready to serve, remove banana ice cream from the freezer and let sit at room temperature for 10 minutes.
