KOPREGEL VOLGT DISRUPTIVE EVENTS NOG. MINOR PROGRAMME (INTER)NATIONAL DISASTER, MIGRATION AND RESILIENCE Our society is changing due to constant external events. In this 1/2 year multidisciplinary minor programme, you will acquire a broad overview of external events impacting society and discover how to respond and act. You will learn how to professionally deal with disruptive events in society, such as natural disasters, migration, terrorist attacks, and climate change.

OBJECTIVES

Each year more people are on the move because of disasters and conflict. Due to climate change, every year the number of disaster events is increasing and also the impact on society. Migration flows raise questions about terrorists in our society and in Europe this is a vivid topic of debate. Within and between cities, countries an increasing polarization is seen. You will familiarize and analyze the most common approaches and think about the resilience of societies.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

Gain experience in analysing complex challenges and providing sustainable solutions for international and national disaster contexts and become a leader in (disaster) risk and resilience with your own professional background!

You will learn in different courses, through experiments, simulations, projects, field trips, lectures and literature.

• Provide students with a multidisciplinary background, methods and perspectives in order to design and manage integrated reliance strategies.

• Bridge specific competencies about resilience with the need of the real world complexity and practices.

• Allow students to become the future professionals able to address the complexity of disaster resilience.

This minor programme is framed around 2 modules and in total 11 courses of in total 30 ECTS. During the 2 modules you will learn to understand different types of events with a disruptive impact on society.

In the first module, you will focus on natural disasters and learn to respond, aiming to reduce the impact of natural disasters in both a developing and western context. During this module you will learn to work with innovative tools and design, test and evaluate solutions in real life cases.

In the second module, you will learn to understand the main European issues that have caused disruption in recent years: migration and migration-related issues. The courses you’ll be attending are migration dynamics, ethics,

radicalization and terrorism, governance and policy, in Europe from different perspectives. Part of this module are two field trips: a 1 week field visit to Bosnia and Hercegovina and a short trip to Calais. During both trips you will do participative research.

During the entire minor programme you develop yourself as a professional in a disruptive event. At the end of the minor project all your work will be exhibited.

REASONS TO STUDY THIS MINOR PROGRAMME: International programme This minor programme is fully in English and will prepare you for a bachelor graduation on an internationally relevant topic.

Specialised staff The academic staff consists of specialist on the topics and has both strong field experience and theoretical knowledge on the topics they teach.

Strong link with practice All courses include a strong link with the daily practice and you will study real life cases in which you will apply your knowledge. A large number of humanitarian organisations, governmental agencies and companies will provide cases and input for your work.

Addressing the global most urgent problems Disaster and the number of affected populations are increasing every year. The Sendai Framework for Disaster Resilience, the United Nations and other international organisations call for practical solutions for the complex problems around disaster resilience.

This minor programme will prepare students for a bachelor graduation on one of the main topics in the programme.

The course will facilitate students to understand what skills and knowledge they need to work in the field of disaster risk reduction, migration, policy and practice and resilience in modern society.

Career opportunities The programme is supported by the most prestigious humanitarian agencies in the Netherlands and has a strong network with Dutch municipalities, governmental agencies and policymakers, aid institutions and other agencies. Throughout the programme you will discover what these partners do and this will facilitate you to graduate with them for your bachelor, do an internship or work with them after your studies. This programme is an excellent preparation to work in a humanitarian, political, governmental or aid organisations.

PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS The target students to be involved in this programme are mainly planners, environmental scientists architects, civil engineers, social scientists, communication experts, political scientists, engineers, geographers. However, the students does not exclude students with another specialisation. Students from outside the Netherlands are strongly invited to participate as their perspective is of important added value for the discussions in class. The topics in the courses are global with attention for Dutch situation, and therefore of interest for people from any geographical origin.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS This programme is open to you if you have successfully completed at least 2 years of a bachelor’s degree programme.

Students of all bachelor programs are allowed to subscribe.

For Dutch students there are no other requirements.

Students that do not study in the Netherlands are required to submit for their application: • A motivation letter • An up-to-date copy of their CV • A minimum English level IELTS score of 6.

A background is recommended in any discipline related to risk management, urbanization challenges, engineering, planning, risk analysis, migration or climate change. Students should be able to follow classes, present and submit their work in English. International submission closes on May 15.

Collaborating academies This minor programme is a collaboration between 3 academies of Avans University of Applied Sciences; Built Environment and Infrastructure, Governance and Security, and Technology of Health and Environment.

“In Lesbos we were able to get a better idea of what life was like for the refugees.

It was quite amazing to see how happy all the children were who lived in the camps. I was also surprised by how much the staff at the camp tried to give the refugees the feeling that could live normal lives.”

“Working in a refugee camp, well that was something i thought i never would do, but it happened and the experience was special.

Being there and seeing the condition in the camp, although the camp was not bad, the conditions were far from ideal. I cannot imagine to live there for several years without knowing the future. The children there have had terrible experiences in live, yet they are playing their like nothing happened.”
