KOPREGEL VOLGT DISRUPTIVE EVENTS NOG. MINOR PROGRAMME (INTER)NATIONAL DISASTER, RESILIENCE AND CLIMATE CHANGE Our society is changing due to constant external events. In this 1/2 year multidisciplinary minor programme, you will acquire a broad overview of external events impacting nature and society, and discover how to monitor, respond and act. You will learn how to professionally deal with disruptive events in society, such as natural disasters and climate change.

Each year more people are on the move because of disasters and conflict. Due to climate change every year the number of disaster events is increasing, causing migration. The resulting migration flows have impact on society. Within and between cities, countries an increasing polarization is seen. You will familiarize and analyze the most common approaches and think about the resilience of societies, as well as the resilience of nature. How can both nature and society deal with and recover from disaster events?

To answer that question you need experience in analyzing complex challenges and providing sustainable solutions for international and national disaster contexts. This

knowledge and experience is offered in different courses, through experiments, simulations, projects, field trips, lectures, workshops and literature.

OBJECTIVES • Provide students with a multidisciplinary background, methods and perspectives in order to design and manage integrated reliance strategies.

• Bridge specific competencies about resilience with the need of the real world complexity and practices.

• Provide students with tools for environmental monitoring and spatial analysis and showcase their relevance for organizations / governments • Learn students how to communicate with stakeholders involved in the environmental multidisciplinary problem, in order to achieve a common goal.

• Allow students to become the future professionals able to address the complexity of disaster resilience.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE This minor programme is framed around 2 modules comprising several courses of in total 30 ECTS. During the 2 modules you will learn to understand different types of events with a disruptive impact on society.

In the first module, you will focus on natural disasters and learn to respond, aiming to reduce the impact of natural disasters in both a developing and western context. During this module you will learn to work with innovative tools and design, test and evaluate solutions in real life cases.

In the second module, you will work on a project in a small team, based on a question from an actual client. We stimulate multidisciplinary groups, so you can learn with each other and from each other. All of the project topics have in common that they are focused on environmental disasters that are happening now and can be monitored and recovered from due to human interference.

Career opportunities The programme is supported by the most prestigious humanitarian agencies in the Netherlands and has a strong network with Dutch municipalities, governmental agencies and policymakers, aid institutions and other agencies.

Throughout the programme you will discover what these partners do and this will facilitate you to graduate with them for your bachelor, do an internship or work with them after your studies. This programme is an excellent preparation to work in a humanitarian, political, governmental or aid organisations.

Specialised staff The academic staff consists of specialist on the topics and has both strong field experience and theoretical knowledge on the topics they teach.

Exchange students You can participate in an exchange programme at Avans University of Applied Sciences if your home institution has concluded an agreement with Avans. Under this agreement you can be nominated to study with us. As an exchange student, you will continue to pay tuition fees to your home institution. Strong link with practice All courses include a strong link with the daily practice and you will study real life cases in which you will apply your knowledge. A large number of humanitarian organisations, governmental agencies and companies will provide cases and input for your work.

Addressing the global most urgent problems Disaster and the number of affected populations are increasing every year. The Sendai Framework for Disaster Resilience, the United Nations and other international organisations call for practical solutions for the complex problems around disaster resilience.

This minor programme will prepare students for a bachelor graduation on one of the main topics in the programme.

The course will facilitate students to understand what skills and knowledge they need to work in the field of disaster risk reduction, migration, policy and practice and resilience in modern society.

PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS A background is recommended in any discipline related to risk management, urbanization challenges, engineering, planning, risk analysis, migration or climate change. The target students to be involved in this program are mainly environmental science students, planners, architects, civil

engineers, social scientists, communication experts, political scientists, health care, engineers and geographers. However, the program does not exclude students with another specialisation. Students from outside the Netherlands are strongly invited to participate as their perspective is of important added value for the discussions in class. The topics in the courses are global with attention for Dutch situation, and therefore of interest for people from any geographical origin.
