MINOR PROGRAMME (INTER)NATIONAL MINOR DROWNING CITIES This international minor is interesting for students of the Build environment eager to develop their design talent. By assuming the role of architect, area developer civil engineer or water manager you will develop the necessary skills to find design solutions for problems in the built environment.

You will gain insight into your field of expertise. Your work will be carried out at ‘urban level’ and integrated into a broader context. You will work with lecturers and students in the field of architecture, urbanism, spatial development and civil engineering. As part of a team you will focus on water-related problems caused by climate change in residential areas.

Can the ‘Dutch Approach’, which deals with water in urban residential areas (river areas), be applied internationally while taking cultural differences and socio-economic issues into account? Or can you use a totally different approach?

According to Waggonner Ball (architect, New Orleans) designing for resilience, requires living with water and a willingness to see a threat as an opportunity. The Dutch approach can be summed up as creating “room for the river”, building with nature and consensus economy.

Yet, what does this Dutch approach actually imply for

your expertise? What is the value of a Dutch approach to water-related problems abroad?

The ambition of this minor is imagining radical solutions and coming up with daring designs for a delimited area in a Chinese City. Making booming cities resilient, needs real courage. Only great vision and creativity can lead to innovations that are able to make such cities future proof.

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE Working as an expert (architect, spatial developer, civil engineer...) you will be focussing on water-related problems caused by climate change in residential areas. Working closely together with experts in a variety of disciplines, makes it possible to come-up with integrated and multilayered solutions. The project demands (1) a multidisciplinary approach relying on (2) strong personal expertise of each participant.

As a professional, working in an international team on a project abroad, requires the use of a shared language.

Consequently, study materials and courses, as well as written texts and presentations held by students are in English.

In addition to specific skills (visualization techniques, etc.) the project-work requires insight in project-related fields of expertise. To meet these requirements, excursions, courses, instructions, workshops and guest-lectures have been organised. Attendance is compulsory. Yet, some adjacent training and practise is needed (individual grade) to guarantee that some ‘output’ (group grade) becomes a substantial part of the project work. This import has to be traceable in the design report (see separate course material and rubrics).

Curriculum: In this programme you can earn 30 ECTS credits as an integrated whole study unit. Assessments will take the form of reviews of and feedback on the weekly submissions and on the final product and presentation held as part of the closing symposium.

Schedule/workload: This is a full-time programme. The activities will be scheduled over the course of the week (2 to 3 days) and include workshops, lectures, project preparation, project execution, supervision and feedback sessions. You will be expected to attend at least 80% of all the activities.

• End of 1st quarter: Midterm presentation • End of 1st quarter: Study trip to project (if possible, alternative virtual excursion facilitated by locals) • End of semester: Final presentation and final report

REASONS TO STUDY THIS MINOR PROGRAMME: International programme This minor programme is fully in English and will prepare you for a bachelor graduation on an internationally relevant topic.

Experts teaching & turtoring The academic staff consists of specialist on the topics and has both strong field experience and theoretical knowledge on the topics they teach. This staff is supported by a selection of experts from around the world and of various expertises. These experts will provide additional knowledgde on the contemporary topics and design issues. In addition to tutoring by the academic staff the international experts will also provide feedback to the student design teams.

Working on contemporary global & societal issues A multitude of contemporary problems and issues are adressed in the design assignment which you are going to tackle in a design team. You will be working on research on these topics in your own field of expertise. Some of the topics you as a teammember will take into account: • • • • •

Interdisciplinary design team(work) The research and design you conduct will be integrated in a integral project of a interdisciplinary design team.

This means that you work together with students from other study programmes and combine your works into an holistic solution. This improves both teamwork skills and the ability to think beyond your own expertise to solve design problems.

PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS A background is recommended in any discipline related to risk management, urbanization challenges, engineering, planning, risk analysis, migration or climate change. The target students to be involved in this programme are mainly planners, architects, civil engineers and area developers. However, the progamme does not exclude students with another specialisation. Students from outside the Netherlands are strongly invited to participate as their perspective is of important added value for the discussions in class. The topics in the courses are global with attention for the Dutch approach, and therefore of interest for people from any geographical origin.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Exchange students You can participate in an exchange programme at Avans University of Applied Sciences if your home institution has concluded an agreement with Avans. Under this agreement you can be nominated to study with us. As an exchange student, you will continue to pay tuition fees to your home institution.
