DECEMBER

Holiday Traditions Return to Downtown Avalon Park

December is a special time in Avalon Park, when our community comes together to celebrate the holiday season through traditions both old and new. This month, Downtown Avalon Park will be filled with festive gatherings, family activities, and opportunities to connect with neighbors as we close out the year with gratitude and joy.

At the heart of the season is Avalon Aglow, presented by AdventHealth, returning on Saturday, December 6th from 3–9 p.m. This 27th annual celebration transforms Downtown Avalon Park into a winter wonderland. The afternoon kicks off with the Holiday Parade at 3 p.m., featuring local schools, organizations, performers, and civic groups filling the streets with festive music and community pride. The celebration continues throughout the evening with a bounce park, teen zone, food trucks, vendors, community performances, pictures with Santa, and the popular snow slide. The night concludes with the spectacular fireworks show at 9 p.m., lighting up the sky in a tradition that brings thousands of residents together each year.

One of our favorite newer additions is the Children’s Entrepreneur Market, showcasing young makers, bakers, crafters, and innovators from across the community. Their creativity and hard work offer a wonderful reminder of the talent and potential right here in our own neighborhood.

Beyond Avalon Aglow, December is filled with additional opportunities to enjoy the season. Families can stop by the Marketplace for Milk and Cookies with Santa, a cozy and festive gathering perfect for holiday photos and sweet treats. Cyclists of all ages can participate in the Holiday Light Bike Tour, a glowing group ride through Avalon’s decorated streets. The Rotary Club Holiday Wine Walk also returns this month, offering a cheerful evening stroll through Downtown with tastings and stops at local businesses.

As we approach the end of the year, Avalon Park will host not one but two celebrations to ring in 2026. The new Noon Year’s Eve Celebration on December 31st offers a fun countdown for families looking to celebrate early, followed by the traditional New Year’s Eve festivities on December 31st to welcome the new year with friends, neighbors, and community cheer.

December in Avalon Park is more than a collection of events — it is a season that highlights the best of who we are as a community. It is a time to gather, to give back, and to celebrate the connections that make this place feel like home.

We look forward to sharing the month with you and wish all of our Avalon Park families hope, peace, and joy throughout the holiday season. To view the full calendar of events, visit the website calendar here

spent much of my life working on projects around the world, but it is here—right in this community—that I feel the strongest sense of home. It is not just the buildings or the beautiful streets that make this place meaningful, but the people and the shared values that bring us together.

More than 25 years ago, when we first began building Avalon Park, I often thought about the towns where I grew up in Switzerland. Places where daily life happened on foot, where you knew your neighbors, and where the corner shop owner greeted you by name. Over the years, I have watched those same qualities take root here. Today, Avalon Park Orlando is a living example of what it means to create a place where you can truly live, learn, work, and play.

A recent Channel 13 News feature on Small Business Saturday reminded me once again how important our small businesses are to the fabric of this town. These are not just storefronts; they are the dreams and hard work of local families who invest everything they have into serving this community. They are the people who open their doors early, stay late, sponsor local teams, donate to school programs, and help create the vibrant atmosphere we all enjoy.

Small Business Saturday is a wonderful celebration, but supporting local businesses cannot be something we think about only once a year. These merchants depend

very heart of this town. Every purchase, big or small, keeps dollars in our community and helps ensure that Avalon Park remains a place full of opportunity and character.

As we enter the holiday season, I invite you to take part in the many ways Avalon Park comes alive this month. Our signature celebration, Avalon Aglow, returns on December 6th from 3–9 p.m. The afternoon begins with the beloved holiday parade and continues with performances, treats, activities, and real snow. It is one of my favorite events of the year because it demonstrates exactly what a close-knit community can create together.

As we look ahead to a new year, I remain grateful for each of you who call Avalon Park home. Thank you for supporting our local businesses, for showing up to community events, and for continuing to build the kind of town that people feel proud to belong to.

Wishing you and your family a joyful and peaceful holiday season.

Happy December!

As December begins, the holiday season is now becoming fully visible around us. This month offers a chance to gather, enjoy familiar traditions, and appreciate the atmosphere that comes with this time of year. It’s our chance to look back on what we’ve experienced and consider what lies ahead. December marks the transition from one year to the next, giving us an opportunity for reflection and anticipation as winter really starts to settle in.

I’m excited to announce my upcoming event celebrating the annual Three Kings’ Day tradition. Join us on Saturday, January 3rd, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the Town Park in Avalon Park (3651 Avalon Park E Blvd, Orlando, FL 32828). The event will include a toy giveaway

and participation from various public and private community organizations. Guests can enjoy complimentary food, beverages, and live music, making it a festive experience for all. This family-friendly gathering is a fantastic opportunity for children and families in our District to celebrate this cherished tradition. Kids will not only receive gifts but also get to meet the Three Kings and enjoy the festive outdoor setting.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like to receive my newsletter, you can email me at district4@ocfl.net or call my office at 407-836-5881. You can also meet me in person on the first Wednesdays of the month at the East Orange Community Center (12050 E Colonial Dr) or on the Third Wednesdays of the

month at the Meadow Woods Recreation Center (1751 Rhode Island Woods Cir). My time at both locations is from 10am to 12pm. Thank you again, Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas!

The Emotional Toll of Buying or Selling a Home in December

The holidays are often described as “the most wonderful time of the year.” In my experience, my clients, whether they are buying or selling a home during the Christmas season, often find that this phrase feels a little ironic. Between the excitement of new beginnings and the pressure to make picture-perfect memories, the process can stir up more emotions than a Hallmark movie marathon.

It turns out, buying or selling a home during the holidays isn’t just a logistical challenge — it’s an emotional one.

When Festive Meets Fatigue

Even in the best circumstances, buying or selling a home ranks among life’s most stressful experiences. Layer that on top of the busiest, most sentimental season of the year, and emotions can easily swing between joy, stress, excitement, social obligations, financial pressure, and exhaustion.

For sellers, parting with your home can feel especially difficult in December. Every garland, stocking, and family photo becomes a time capsule of holidays past — and letting them go can be harder than you would expect. Buyers, on the other hand, often find themselves torn between excitement and the overwhelming stress of wanting everything to work out without a hitch. You might be dreaming of hosting this year’s holiday dinner in your new home, while simultaneously navigating inspections, appraisals, and loan approvals — all before Christmas.

WHY IT FEELS MORE STRESSFUL

1. The holidays amplify emotions. The season magnifies everything — joy, nostalgia, even anxiety. Add a major life decision, such as moving, stress, and emotional fatigue become almost inevitable.

2. The perfection trap.

There’s an unspoken pressure to make the holidays “feel perfect.” For sellers, that can mean juggling showings and staging while trying to maintain festive cheer. For buyers, it’s the desire to find the “perfect home” before year-end — a pressure cooker for decision-making stress.

3. Financial juggling.

Gift shopping, travel, and holiday entertainment can collide with down payments and moving expenses. It’s easy to feel stretched thin — emotionally and financially.

4. Routine disruption.

The holidays already throw schedules off balance. Adding real estate deadlines, it can feel like you’re managing two full-time jobs.

HOW TO STAY GROUNDED

Acknowledge your emotions. You’re not just changing addresses — you’re transitioning between chapters. Give yourself permission to feel your feelings.

Set realistic expectations.

A delayed appraisal or a less-than-perfect building inspection won’t ruin your holiday or your deal. Being flexible, prioritizing what’s most important, and having a trustworthy realtor you can rely on will ease these pressures.

Make space for joy.

Build your support system.

Lean on professionals who can guide you calmly — a good real estate agent, lender, or even a trusted friend who’s been through it before.

Even amid the chaos, pause to enjoy the season — do some of your favorite holiday fun things.

Redefine “home.”

Remember, your home isn’t about square footage or closing dates — it’s about connection with friends and family, about building your lifestyle. Keeping this close to your heart adds strength and purpose to your journey. So then, let the fun times begin.

Celebrate the Season of Giving at Encore: The Senior Santa Giving Tree Returns

The holidays have a way of pulling people together—through small gestures, warm conversations, and traditions that remind us what community really means. At Encore at Avalon Park, we carry those traditions close to heart. This year, our Senior Santa Giving Tree returns as one of our most loved ways to spread joy, connection, and comfort throughout the season.

At Encore, daily life is built on togetherness. Our residents are the center of our community, and every program we create, from celebrations to wellness activities, is designed to honor who they are and the stories they bring. The Giving Tree is an extension of that care. It’s a chance for families, neighbors, businesses, and friends across Avalon Park to share in the warmth of the season and brighten a senior’s holiday in a meaningful way.

How the Senior Santa Giving Tree Works

Instead of selecting ornaments, this year’s Giving Tree is simple and straightforward:

Just choose an item from the wish list, wrap and label it, and drop it off at Encore anytime before December 19th.

Participating is easy:

1. Choose a Gift From the Wish List

Pick any item you’d like to donate—every gift supports a resident or one of our community partners.

2. Grant a Wish

Purchase the item you selected, whether it’s a comfort item, a necessity, or a small joyful treat.

3. Wrap with Care Wrap and label your gift, then return it to Encore by December 20th.

What’s on the Wish List This Year

Our seniors’ requests range from practical items that support daily comfort to creative supplies that spark joy. Popular wishes include:

• Body wash, shampoo, and gentle lotions

• Non-skid socks, slippers, and soft blankets

• Light fragrances and fashion jewelry

• Art supplies like watercolor sets, brushes, and canvas boards

• 300–500 piece puzzles

• Baby clothing donations for partner programs

These small gifts hold big emotional value. They bring ease, warmth, and a sense of celebration into the season.

Why This Tradition Matters

The Giving Tree is much more than a donation opportunity. It’s a reminder that kindness is powerful—that a thoughtfully wrapped gift can turn an ordinary morning into something memorable.

Many seniors look forward to this tradition all year long. For some, it symbolizes connection. For others, it brings back memories of holidays from years past. And for all of us at Encore, it highlights the incredible generosity of the Avalon Park community.

Your participation tells our residents, “You matter. You are loved. You are part of us.”

That message means everything.

Join Us in Making the Holidays Brighter

We invite you to be a part of this year’s Senior Santa Giving Tree. Whether you’re choosing an item, coordinating a group donation, or sharing the tradition with others, your support helps make the season feel magical for the people who call Encore home.

To get involved, visit us at Encore Assisted Living and Memory Care, 13798 Cygnus Drive, Orlando, FL 32828, or call 407-2707500 for more information.

Let’s make this holiday season the happiest one yet—together. From all of us at Encore, thank you for bringing joy to our residents and for being such an important part of our Encore family. Here’s to celebrating the season with love, laughter, and a whole lot of giving!

The Timber Creek Regiment Closed the Fall Season as FFCC Outdoor State Champions

The Timber Creek Regiment closed its fall season as FFCC Outdoor State Champions with a show built around powerful classical and contemporary music. Their 2025 production, titled Alive! Dead. …Zombie, was the product of months of careful musical and visual work by student performers and the Regiment’s staff.

The program brought together Mozart’s Lacrimosa, Henry Purcell’s Dido’s Lament, Richard Saucedo’s Symphony No. 1, and a new original piece by Saucedo written in

the style of the show. The result was a production that reimagined familiar concert works, placing well-known pieces in a new context that matched the show’s title and tone.

Behind the medals lies a tight-knit community of roughly 200 students across the wind, percussion, and color guard sections who spend nearly six months building the show from the ground up. From late summer through November, they rehearse after school and on weekends to refine every set and phrase, competing throughout the season as well as taking the field at Timber Creek’s Friday night football games to share their production with classmates, families, and alumni.

The Regiment is led by directors Rhett Cox, Devin Hoey, and Jonathan Tirado, along with a dedicated team of instructional staff and volunteers who support the students on and off the field. This state championship reflects not only their competitive success, but the dedication and camaraderie that define the Timber Creek Regiment year after year!

Festive Fun and Good Cheer, Families and Friends Enjoying Times Together for the Rest of the Year!

The holidays are here, and as the year comes to a close, my heart reminds me how important it is to slow down and cherish the people we love. There’s something truly magical about cozying up with family and friends, sharing laughter, and making memories that stay with us long after the season ends. This is a time to celebrate connection, kindness, joy, to give, to share, and to create moments together that fill our hearts and homes. Let’s embrace the season with fun, learning, and togetherness, and make it a December to remember.

25 Books of Christmas

Celebrate the season with a 25-day holiday reading countdown! Wrap 25 books and let your family open one each night leading up to Christmas. You can use new, old, thrifted, and even books you exchange with others to keep the holiday reading fun!

Add a little extra fun by tucking in “giving challenges” in a few books:

• “Write a kind note for someone special.”

• “Pick a toy to donate.”

• “Read this story under the Christmas tree lights.”

It’s a fun way to build reading excitement and sprinkle kindness throughout December!

Elf on the Shelf Magic

Not familiar with Elf on the Shelf by Carol Aebersold and Chanda Bell? It’s a playful holiday tradition where a small elf visits your home to watch over the kids and reports back to Santa.

If you haven’t started this tradition, now is a perfect time to begin reading this book with your children and make it part of your holiday routine. For families who enjoy this story, you can add some extra fun with creative activities!

Fun missions include:

• Elf’s Word of the Day: Learn a new holiday word together

• Reading Challenge: Read a story in silly voices or from a blanket fort

• STEM Moment: Build a tiny chair or gift for your elf

• Give-Back Mission: Make a card or small gift for someone who needs a smile

It’s a great way to keep the magic alive, spark creativity, and add a few laughs to your holiday season!

Family Craft & Holiday Shirt Fun

‘Tis the season to make and create meaningful holiday gifts , and what’s more fun than a custom family holiday shirt?

Grab your markers, iron-ons, or yes, the Cricut you still have in the box from last year , and design matching or themed shirts together. Add names, festive icons, or silly sayings for a fun, personalized twist!

Not sure where to start? I’m just a phone call away! I can come to you or guide you virtually, so your Cricut or holiday project gets used and everyone has a blast creating together.

Other fun ideas to craft together:

• Cards, bookmarks, ornaments, or treat bags

• Personalized tags, framed quotes, or photo keepsakes

• Small “kindness kits” or gifts for neighbors, teachers, or nursing homes

Quick Canva Tip: Search “Christmas Card” - pick a template - add your photo or message - print or share digitally. Fast, festive, and fun!

Put on some holiday tunes, grab cocoa, and let the creativity flow!

Space to Celebrate: Why The 5th Floor Is Orlando’s Holiday Gathering Spot

The holidays have a way of sneaking up on all of us. One minute it’s pumpkin spice and warm afternoons, and the next you’re juggling gift lists, year-end deadlines, and the annual “Whose house are we hosting at this year?” conversation.

For many, the season becomes a balancing act between creating meaningful moments and finding the space to actually enjoy them.

That’s where The 5th Floor Orlando steps in, not just as a workplace, but as a community hub ready to transform into the perfect backdrop for your holiday celebrations.

A thoughtfully chosen venue sets the mood long before your guests walk through the door. It signals that this gathering matters. That it was curated with intention. It’s a chance to slow down and celebrate the togetherness we all crave this time of year.

The 5th Floor is built for those moments.

OUC Opens One of the Largest Floating Solar Arrays in the US

OUC—The Reliable One has launched one of the largest floating solar arrays in the United States, and the largest in Florida.

The 2-megawatt system – located at 5301 S. Conway Rd. in Orlando – consists of two arrays and more than 3,400 solar panels that send energy directly to the grid. One array faces south while the other faces east and west. OUC is extensively researching this hybrid approach to learn how to best position future designs for maximized solar generation. Solar now makes up more than 10% of the utility’s energy portfolio, which is enough to power 50,000 typical OUC-customer homes.

“Thousands of people drive by these arrays every day, reminding them of our commitment to solar energy and innovation,” said Mike Murtagh, OUC Chief Transformation & Technology Officer. “Opening our second major solar project in less than a year keeps OUC and its more than a quarter of a million customers on a path to a sustainable future.”

In April, OUC held a grand opening ceremony for the largest solar energy project in its history. The

Harmony II and Storey Bend Solar Energy Centers – located on two separate 600-acre sites east of St. Cloud – more than doubled the utility’s existing solar capacity.

This latest project was made possible through a right of way agreement with the Florida Department of Transportation, which operates the state roadway system. D3Energy, the U.S. leader in floating solar (FPV) development, led the project’s design and construction. The company also built OUC’s first floating solar array in 2016.

Innovative projects like the floating solar array contribute to a diversified generation portfolio that strengthens OUC’s ability to deliver affordable, reliable and sustainable power to customers yearround.

OUC customers interested in powering their homes or businesses with solar energy can enroll in the SunChoice program, a service that offset more than 10,700 tons of CO2 in 2024 alone.

For more information about OUC’s SunChoice program, visit ouc.com/solarsolutions.

Finish the Year Strong at the East Orlando Gym - Healthy Habits Start Now—Here Is How to Stay Well Through the Holidays

The holiday season often brings joy, celebration, and a full calendar of events, but it can also make it challenging to maintain healthy routines. At the East Orlando Gym, we believe the end of the year is not a time to slow down—it is the perfect opportunity to start building the habits that will carry you confidently into 2026.

Rather than waiting for January 1st to “start fresh,” we encourage our members to begin now. A small step today becomes momentum tomorrow, and with the right support, staying active and well during the holidays can be both manageable and enjoyable.

One of the most effective ways to stay on track is to schedule your workouts the same way you schedule gatherings and appointments. Whether it is a 30-minute strength session, a group class, or a morning walk through Avalon Park, consistency makes a meaningful difference. At the East Orlando Gym, our expanded fall schedule offers multiple class options designed to fit busy lifestyles, giving you the flexibility to show up even on your fullest days.

Fueling well is another key to finishing the year

strong. Holiday foods are meant to be enjoyed, but balancing celebrations with mindful choices helps keep your energy steady. Simple habits—drinking water throughout the day, adding greens to your plate, and eating a wholesome meal before an event— can help you feel your best without missing out on seasonal favorites.

Rest is equally important. Prioritize sleep, take moments to decompress, and build in small pockets of quiet time. A healthy routine is not only about movement and nutrition; it is about caring for your whole self.

No matter your goals, the East Orlando Gym is here to support you. With community-driven programming, knowledgeable staff, and a welcoming environment, this is a place where every member can thrive.

United Arts of Central Florida will organize the classes, which will be led by professional teaching artists who have direct experience serving older adults, those with underlying memory care needs and other physical challenges. Senior Resource Alliance will direct the local population of older adults to the program. This initiative is made possible thanks to funding from AdventHealth.

These courses take into consideration mobility restrictions as well as neurological and memory care challenges such as dementia, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s that the adult participants face.

The program will culminate with a celebratory event so that seniors can show their family and friends what they learned. This event will be open to the media.

Why This Matters

- Regular participation in arts activities has been linked to better sleep, reduced pain and ecreased reliance on medications in older adults. (Frontiers in Psychology)

- Creative expression through painting, writing or music helps reduce anxiety and promote emotional healing in hospitalized patients. (Mayo Clinic, Humanities in Medicine Program)

- Social prescribing is a growing approach where healthcare providers connect patients with community activities like art, exercise or volunteering to support their health at little or no cost.

Quotes from Leadership

“Art is more than expression – it’s connection, healing, and joy,” said Mary Ellen Philbin, CEO of Share the Care. “It sparks memory, fosters community, and reminds each person of their unique story. Share the Care is excited to partner with these creative local organizations to incorporate this type of communication and expression within our Adult Day Health Centers.”

“This new pilot program demonstrates how much can be achieved when working together,” said Karla Radka, President & CEO of Senior Resource Alliance. “Research has shown the positive effect that art can have on older adults, and by bringing this class directly to Central Florida seniors, we make it easier for them to access those benefits.”

“In the coming decades, seniors will be our community’s largest population, and it is essential that our services reflect their unique needs,” said Jennifer Evins, President and CEO of United Arts of Central Florida. “We believe the arts offer a powerful way to support their health and well-being and are grateful to AdventHealth for the seed funding for this important pilot program and for SRA for their willingness to partner and learn together.”

Back to Nature Wildlife Refuge Raises Over $36,000 at Wine for Wildlife Fundraiser

Back to Nature Wildlife Refuge hosted an unforgettable evening at its annual Wine for Wildlife fundraiser on November 7th at the Avalon Park Pavilion, bringing together supporters from across Central Florida for a night of celebration, compassion, and community. This year’s event was one of the most successful to date, raising more than $36,000 to support Back to Nature’s mission of rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing native wildlife.

Guests enjoyed a lively evening featuring wine tastings, hors d’oeuvres, silent auctions, and animal

ambassador visits. The atmosphere was both elegant and festive, made even more memorable by a special VIP hour offering early animal encounters, an extra drink ticket, and exclusive BTN keepsakes.

A standout highlight of the evening was the captivating performance by Mystic Muses, whose live entertainment added energy and artistry to the event. Their performance created the perfect backdrop for an evening dedicated to helping the animals who rely on Back to Nature’s care.

The fundraising success was also made possible thanks to the generosity of sponsors, donors, and community partners whose support helps sustain Back to Nature’s year-round efforts. Attendees bid on silent auction items, purchased BTN wine, and contributed in ways both big and small—each helping to further wildlife rehabilitation and environmental education across the region.

Back to Nature Wildlife Refuge extends heartfelt gratitude to the volunteers who staffed the event, the sponsors who made it possible, and the community members whose support ensures that injured and orphaned wildlife receive the care they need.

The Wine for Wildlife fundraiser continues to be a shining example of what happens when a community comes together with purpose. Back to Nature looks forward to another year of protecting the wildlife that shares our home.

A Record-Breaking Morning of Community: 2025 Avalon Park Turkey Trot

Thanksgiving morning in Avalon Park began with crisp air, energetic music, and the unmistakable buzz of neighbors gathering for one of the community’s most cherished traditions: the Avalon Park Foundation Thanksgiving Turkey Trot 5K. This year’s event drew more than 800 participants, marking the largest turnout in its history and reflecting the growing enthusiasm for starting the holiday with fitness, fun, and fellowship.

Families, seasoned runners, first-timers, strollers, and even a few enthusiastic pups lined up along Avalon Park East Boulevard as the sun rose over Downtown. The sense of community was unmistakable. Residents greeted old friends, volunteers offered early-morning encouragement, and participants snapped photos in their best turkey hats, feather tutus, and festive team shirts.

Once the race began, runners and walkers followed the familiar course through the heart of Avalon Park, cheered on by volunteers who lined the route with signs, smiles, and steady encouragement. The finish line celebration was just as lively, featuring a warm and welcoming pancake and waffle station, generously made possible by The Figueroa Team, EXP Partners, who helped fuel hundreds of hungry participants fresh off the course.

The 5K also highlighted this year’s top performers, who earned the fastest times in a highly competitive field:

1st Place: Ethan Peterman

2nd Place: Yara Alshaybani

3rd Place: Jean Haure Mirande

Behind every successful Turkey Trot is a dedicated network of sponsors, whose support ensures that the Foundation can continue offering scholarships, funding programs, and hosting events that strengthen the Avalon Park community. The Foundation extends its deep appreciation to East Orlando Gym, Aqua Bins Exterior Cleaning Service, The White Agency, eXp Realty, The Figueroa Team, Alive Church and all community sponsors who contributed to this year’s success.

Equally important are the volunteers—those who arrived before dawn, directed runners, set up water stations, managed registration, and cheered every participant across the finish line. Their service embodies the spirit of Avalon Park and is essential to making this beloved holiday tradition possible.

The 2025 Turkey Trot was more than a race; it was a celebration of community, wellness, and gratitude. The Avalon Park Foundation thanks everyone who participated and supported the event and looks forward to welcoming neighbors back to the starting line next Thanksgiving.
