Fall Into Fun and Light Up the Season in Avalon Park

LEARN

Mark your calendars for a season packed with festivals, live music, parades, and holiday magic — and discover how you can be part of the stories that make our town so special.

As the Florida heat begins to ease and the final months of the year unfold, Avalon Park transforms into a lively destination filled with family traditions, community celebrations, and magical moments. From the first stein raised in October to the twinkling lights of December, there is something for everyone to enjoy right here in the heart of East Orlando.

The season kicks off with the return of one of Avalon Park’s most beloved fall traditions — Oktoberfest, happening October 10-11, 2025. Families and friends can enjoy live music, traditional German cuisine, dancing, stein-holding competitions, and fun activities for all ages. It is a weekend that captures the spirit of fall and brings neighbors together for a celebration unlike any other.

Beyond these marquee events, the coming months will also feature weekly favorites like Movie Under the Stars, live music and trivia nights at the Marketplace, Food Truck Nights, and more — ensuring that there is always something happening right around the corner.

We are also inviting our readers to be part of two special community projects this season. First, we are creating the Avalon Park Community Cookbook, and we want to feature your favorite recipes! Whether it is a treasured family dish, a holiday tradition, or a go-to weeknight meal, your recipe can help tell the story of Avalon Park through food.

WORK PLAY

Just a few weeks later, the community’s Halloween spirit takes center stage with Spooktacular on October 25, 2025. This free, family-friendly event invites all ages to enjoy an evening filled with trick-or-treating, costume contests, and themed performances throughout the downtown.

November offers the perfect opportunity to support local businesses while getting a head start on holiday shopping during the Fall Craft Fair on November 8th. Makers, creators and artisans will feature special deals and unique finds, making it an ideal day to explore Avalon Park and shop small.

The season reaches its peak in December with Avalon Aglow on December 6th, a cherished tradition that transforms the town center into a winter wonderland. Visitors can look forward to a dazzling holiday parade, the lighting of the town tree, spectacular fireworks, and even a visit from Santa himself. It is a celebration that captures the joy and magic of the season and reminds us all why Avalon Park is such a special place to call home.

Second, we are seeking nominations for Neighbors Making a Difference — people in our community who go above and beyond to serve, support, and inspire others. Maybe it is a neighbor who always lends a helping hand, a student leading a volunteer project, or a business owner giving back. Whoever they are, we want to celebrate them.

To submit a recipe or nominate a community hero, please email Info@AvalonParkSun.com with your entry.

And while you are celebrating the season, do not forget to stay connected all year long by signing up for the Avalon Park Sun Digital Newspaper. Delivered straight to your inbox each month, it is the best way to stay informed about upcoming events, community news, and local stories. Scan the QR code below to make sure you are on the list.

Whether you have lived here for years or are discovering Avalon Park for the first time, this season is the perfect time to explore, connect, and celebrate all that our community has to offer. Mark your calendars, bring your friends and family, and join us in making memories that will last long after the holiday lights come down.

LIVE

Coffee with Beat: Coming Home to Avalon Park

A few months ago, during a meeting in Zurich, Switzerland, an Investment Banker asked me if I was about to retire? He noticed that over the last year our group of companies has been selling a great deal of holdings, and some of those transactions have been making headlines around the globe.

My first reaction to comments about my retirement (and being in my early 60’s I took the hint) was: retirement is not mentioned anywhere in the Bible! And no, I am not planning on it for many years to come.

As the CEO of sitEX, Switzerland and US, former President and largest shareholder of VOXX International, CEO and owner of Avalon Park Group, together with a dedicated team, I have been active on 4 continents (America, Europe, Asia and Australia) over the last decade and more.

APG and affiliates indeed have been mostly on the selling side of companies, projects and buildings over the last year. Over more than 3 decades as an entrepreneur I learned, there is a time to buy, a time to hold and a time to sell.

However, there is another reason for some of the transactions: COMING HOME, home to Avalon Park, Orlando and Central Florida!

I grew up in Zurich, Switzerland, almost 5,000 miles away from Avalon Park. I love Zurich and I love Switzerland. However, over the last decades AVALON PARK ORLANDO became the town,

where I feel the most at home.

From the corner office on the 4th floor of the APG building at 3801 Avalon Park East Blvd, downstairs to Marketplace, across the street to the East Orlando Gym (which soon will be renamed the Avalon Park Gym), and in all places of this great town of Avalon Park Orlando is where I feel a strong sense of belonging!

Nearly 200 Avalon Park Group team members work right here in Downtown Avalon Park—at Avalon Park Group, Encore, The 5th Floor, the Marketplace, and the Gym. We have learned much while expanding worldwide, but one conviction has grown stronger than ever: our greatest strengths—our people, capital, and experience— are meant for Central Florida.

Across our many local projects, Avalon Park Wesley Chapel stands out right now. It is truly “on fire.” Downtown One, a beautiful mixed-use building with apartments above retail, has opened its doors. Nearly 1,000 homes—from single-family to townhomes, cottages, and apartments—are currently under construction in Avalon Park Wesley Chapel, along with a new high school. The scale of building we are seeing here rivals the boom of 2005.

We are also proud partners with Academica, based out of Miami, in charter schools in Orlando, Wesley Chapel, and Tavares—all rated A schools. Their popularity is clear—with waiting lists in some locations exceeding 2,000 students.

Encore, our assisted-living community in Avalon Park Orlando, was recently voted Best Assisted Living Community in Orlando. We are now in our 11th year of operations and continue to thrive.

With over 30 ventures in Central Florida, I can assure you there is never a dull moment at APG.

Stay tuned….there is still much more to come.

From the Desk of Commissioner

Maribel Gomez Cordero

Happy October!

I hope everyone is enjoying the start of October and the change of season, with a chance to slow down, spend time outdoors, and connect with loved ones. It’s a wonderful time to reflect on the year so far while looking ahead to the busy months to come. Hispanic Heritage Month continues through October 15, offering opportunities to honor the rich history, culture, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans. Please be sure to take part in the County events and celebrations still happening this month as we close out this important observance.

On Saturday, October 18th I will be hosting a food distribution event in collaboration with Second Harvest of Central Florida. The event will start at 9:30am and will take place at Friends Community Church (53 S Dean Rd, Orlando, FL 32825). We will be giving out food including canned goods, meat produce, vegetables and family boxes. The event will last until supplies run out. If you or anyone you know is in need, please let them know about this upcoming event.

Orange County’s 2025 Mid-Decade Redistricting Advisory Committee has concluded its final meeting and has formally transmitted two maps for the Board of County Commissioners

to choose from. On October 14th at 2pm, the Board of County Commissioners will vote to choose the final map to be put into place after the 2026 general election. If you would like to see the two final maps (Map-1A and Map-7B), they are available online at https://www.ocfl.net/OpenGovernment/Redistricting2025. aspx with corresponding demographic technical reports available for review as well. I greatly encourage anyone who is interested in the process of adding two new districts to the County Commission to attend this final meeting (October 14th at 2pm at the County Administration Center, 201 S Rosalind Ave, Orlando FL 32801) and give public comment if you desire to help the Commissioners in their decision making.

Hurricane Season is underway, and as the season continues to progress, it’s important to stay prepared as the risk of storms will continue to increase over the coming weeks. Stay informed on safety precautions and sandbag pickup locations by signing up for updates at OCAlert.net. For additional preparedness tips and important information, visit the County’s Emergency Information page at ocfl.net/EmergencySafety/EmergencyInformation.aspx.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, or if you would like to receive my newsletter, you can email me at district4@ocfl.net or call my office at 407-836-5881. You can also meet me in person on the first Wednesdays of the month at the East Orange Community Center (12050 E Colonial Dr) or on the Third Wednesdays of the month at the Meadow Woods Recreation Center (1751 Rhode Island Woods Cir). My time at both locations is from 10am to 12pm. Thank you again and enjoy October!

Avalon Elementary’s New Seed Library in Avalon Park’s Community Garden

September is National Fruits & Veggies Month which offers an opportunity for everyone to celebrate all the goodness that fruits and veggies bring to our tables, minds, health and happiness.

Avalon Elementary received a grant from Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots program whose mission is to empower young people to affect positive change in their communities. Their Garden Club decided to bridge the gap to encourage more people to grow fruits and vegetables at home by introducing a Seed Library in our community. They knew they wanted to keep the grant funds within the Avalon community so they sought out of our local carpenters, Maple Leaf Designs. Shawn and Nery Thorimbert were excited to donate their labor and partner on the project! Special thanks to Amanda Greenfield for creating this project, Ms. Wilkerson for giving it the best artistic touch and Michael Miller for installing.

You can find in-season seeds along with local planting guides from our local University of Florida’s Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences extension office. The new Seed Library is located just outside of the Avalon Community Garden behind Avalon Church. Come visit it soon and share photos tagging #AlwaysGrowing!

COMMUNITY CORNER

A Tribute to Nuno Teixeira

Our neighborhood lost one of its brightest lights with the passing of Nuno. To say he will be missed feels far too small. If you lived here, you knew him. And if you didn’t know him personally, you certainly knew of him. He was the smile that welcomed you into Nuno’s Café, the laughter that carried across the room, the quip that could catch you off guard and leave you grinning the rest of the day.

Nuno could have let his food do all the talking—and truthfully, it would have spoken for itself. His café was a success because the food was wonderful, but anyone who ever sat down there knows that wasn’t the real reason people kept coming back. The real draw was Nuno himself. He poured his spirit into every corner of that place, turning it into more than a restaurant. It became a community living room, a space where friends and neighbors gathered, where strangers became acquaintances, and acquaintances became family.

If you sat at Nuno’s Café long enough, you’d see something magical: the way he floated from table to table, never too busy to pause. Every table always seemed to have an extra seat waiting for him. He’d sit down, add his two cents to whatever conversation was happening, and somehow make everyone feel like they were exactly where they were supposed to be. He reminded us all that breaking bread together is about more than food—it’s about connection.

Outside the café, Nuno was equally devoted to what mattered most: his family. He was a true family man, one who cherished his two children and adored his wife, whom he always playfully called his girlfriend. That little joke was a window into the way he

lived—playful, loving, never taking life too seriously, but always taking relationships seriously. He had learned the balance that so many of us strive for: working hard, building a business, serving a community, but still finding time to be present with the people he loved.

On his days off, you might find him beachside at the condo, soaking in the salt air and sunshine, savoring the simple joys of life. Even then, though, he spent much of his time with people—customers, friends, neighbors. Nuno never drew a hard line between those groups, because in his world, once you crossed his path, you were family.

What made Nuno remarkable wasn’t just his generosity or his success. It was his humility. He was never one to brag, but he was never afraid to share what he thought either. Opinionated, yes— but in the best way. His honesty was wrapped in humor, delivered with a twinkle in his eye, and it drew people closer rather than pushing them away.

Nuno’s legacy is more than a café, more than the meals he served, and even more than the laughter he sparked. His legacy is the community he built—one conversation, one smile, one shared plate at a time. He showed us that neighborhoods thrive when people choose kindness, when they show up for each other, when they make space at the table.

We will miss him deeply, but we carry him with us. In every shared meal, every laugh among friends, every moment of connection— we’ll hear his voice, feel his presence, and remember how lucky we were to know him.
