Automotive Innovation Pole Proposal
The Automotive chain
In Abruzzo: •120-140 companies working in the automotive sector consists of a group of globalized firms, both IMs and SMEs operating in the automotive and mechanics sector' s. (car industry, subcontracting, components, engineering). •30.000 employees, 25.000 in province of Chieti, •7 and 8 billion euros sales representing 20% of manufacturing system in Abruzzo •About 48% is exported Sevel-Fiat, Honda-CISI, Denso, Pilkington, Dayco, Honeywell, Pierburg, Tyco, Tecnomatic, Picchio, IMM, Gruppo OMA, Merker, Walter Tosto ecc.

IMITATION
The production of lower value added products and technologies moves to emerging countries
- Transformation of environmental constraints on strength; - Reducing the time and cost of new product development; -Organization of business processes to increase efficiency Communication of this value is essential for the attractiveness of the territory
SCENARIOS •
In recent years large companies have consistently increased the international profile of plants located in Abruzzo with a positive impact on sales and employment;
•
With globalization and the duration decrease of products life cycle, increase exposure to competition from other territories;
•
There is a real risk of relocation of enterprises for problems related to productivity
•
Firms in Abruzzo region have not, generally, research and development divisions even because of lack of infrastructure and scientific expertise;
SCENARIOS
Industry: The sector development for next future will depend crucially on the level of competitiveness achieved as the excess world production capacity relative to demand will cause the closure of several plants. ďƒź For highly globalized finished products, the competition will be tough and will survive only efficient systems with a strategic integration between big enterprises and SMEs in a cluster logic. ďƒź For the components the competition will be even more difficult and the territory becomes crucial to ensure the necessary conditions for increasing their competitiveness.
NEEDS AND REQUIREMENTS IN INNOVATION FIELD •
Connect directly to bigest automotive companies, there are several small and medium enterprises which have established a highly integrated supply chain;
•
SMEs, however, are really small size firms and do not have trained human resources and infrastructure to address, individually, to studies, experiments, surveys, prototype projects and so on (on the other hand, there are critical mass below which the R & D has not reason to exist).
•
The high level technological and productive complexity required by the market raises serious questions to the manufacturing sector in Abruzzo region.
•
For all that reasons, it is essential an intense reorganization for SMEs on: production processes and especially on the cooperation capacity within the integrated supply chain between suppliers and users for improving competition and quality.
INNOVATION INDEX •
The RNSII index in Abruzzo region (Regional National Summary Innovation Index), is about 0.3, showing a gap compared with 0.6 of more developed regions (Lombardy, Lazio, EmiliaRomagna);
•
Employment rate in high-tech services in Abruzzo (2% of total) showed a clear gap compared with national and the European Union average (around and over 3%), despite the presence of a strong manufacturing sector;
•
Private expenditure impact on R & D to the GDP, just like in Italy, belows the European average (0.5% versus 1.3%);
•
The ERDF-Por shows that the lack of integration between big enterprises and SMEs in the region does not favor diffusion of innovations.
