STATE OF THE ART Changing factors

Increase the value and productivity by creating integrated systems and business cooperation to face the "migration" of opportunity. ORIGINAL

Search for greater competitiveness through:

IMITATION

The production of lower value added products and technologies moves to emerging countries

- Transformation of environmental constraints on strength, especially because of the new harder standards, also in emerging countries, for rising energy costs and problems of local and global pollution; - Reducing the time and cost of new product development; - Organization of business processes to increase efficiency (eg creation of integrated chain excellence for “integration product / process). Communication of this value is essential for the attractiveness of the territory

SCENARIOS •

In recent years large companies have consistently increased the international profile of plants located in Abruzzo with a positive impact on sales and employment;

With globalization and the duration decrease of products life cycle, increase exposure to competition from other territories;

There is a real risk of relocation of enterprises for problems related to productivity

Firms in Abruzzo region have not, generally, research and development divisions even because of lack of infrastructure and scientific expertise;

SCENARIOS

Industry: The sector development for next future will depend crucially on the level of competitiveness achieved as the excess world production capacity relative to demand will cause the closure of several plants. ďƒź For highly globalized finished products , the competition will be tough and will survive only efficient systems with a strategic integration between big enterprises and SMEs in a cluster logic. ďƒź For the components the competition will be even more difficult and the territory becomes crucial to ensure the necessary conditions for increasing their competitiveness.

NEEDS AND REQUIREMENTS IN INNOVATION FIELD •

Connect directly to bigest automotive companies, there are several small and medium enterprises which have established a highly integrated supply chain;

SMEs, however, are really small size firms and do not have trained human resources and infrastructure to address, individually, to studies, experiments, surveys, prototype projects and so on (on the other hand, there are critical mass below which the R & D has not reason to exist).

The high level technological and productive complexity required by the market raises serious questions to the manufacturing sector in Abruzzo region.

For all that reasons, it is essential an intense reorganization for SMEs on: production processes and especially on the cooperation capacity within the integrated supply chain between suppliers and users for improving competition and quality.

For helping integration among automotive firms was set up the Consortium I.A.M.

The Corsortium is a non profit organization aims to: Strengthen the firm chain; Implement special projects founded by private and public organization. 72 automotive firms (e.g. FIAT, HONDA e CISI, Denso, Pilkington) University of Aquila and Chieti-Pescara, Research centers; Province of Chieti Association of enterpreneurs.

Innovation processes Innovation is a set of scientific, technological, industrial, organizational, financial and trade activities which contribute to a new product and/or a new production process. Innovation is not an aspect of the company: it is a dimension that affects every area of the company and its own nature: creativity, risk, knowledge, confidence, complexity, and so on. There are three types of innovation: • Incremental technological innovations , small improvements in product performance related to a certain evolution of competences and technological knowledge in the company; • discontinuous technological innovations , "jump" in performance of products or processes, caused by a disruption, and subsequent reconstruction, of skills and technological knowledge of the company. • the breakthrough technological innovations , “jump” in performance of products or processes, caused by an evolution of skills and know-how into the company.

Human capital The key company's success does not more related on production, financial assets or property, but on so-called "intangible assets", such as knowledge resulting from relationships with partners, customers, suppliers and research centers. "The financial assets needed to create wealth is neither dealt with land nor physical labor or machine tools or plants: it is a capital made by knowledge" (Rifkin). The intangible assets are always in productive activities, but the importance acquired in recent years is mainly due to two dominant forces: radical structural changes of enterprises and deep information and technology innovations. The novelty of these last years is the centrality of knowledge not only for businesses development but also for their survival in the market. To meet these needs, big companies organized knowledge management systems, where it is easier activation of new organizational arrangements, restructuring of business processes, introduction of incentive mechanisms and training people to make available and use knowledge. Nowday, however,it is also important to spread this knowledge also amongst SMEs.

Human capital and innovation in SMEs II capitale umano è infatti l’asset fondamentale dell’innovazione.
