DIRECTOR’S SPOTLIGHT Welcome to the 2017 Spring and Summer edition of our Recreation and Parks Department brochure. As I write this note in early February, there is a heat wave outside. It’s 75 degrees outside on February 12. It is hard to believe it is still winter, but I know more cold weather is coming. Regardless of the season, our Recreation and Parks Department never stops working to ensure that there is a wide variety of programs available to residents. I am pleased to present our brochure for Spring/Summer 2017 complete with returning favorites and new programs for all ages. We hope you will take the opportunity to try out some of the new programs while still enjoying some of the programs you have in past years. You can follow our activities and events throughout the year on our website www.augustaga.gov/645/ Recreation-and-Parks and on Facebook at www.facebook.com/AugustaRecreationAndParks/. Since the last brochure, two studies that will affect how the Recreation and Parks Department operates and offers events in the future have been finalized and published. These are the Department’s Masterplan, found at www.planaugustaparks.com/. Over the last quarter of 2016, we took a detailed look at Special Events offered and desired by the Community. You can find those results at www.augustaga.gov/2337/Recreation-and-ParksStrategic-Workshop. I hope you will review both of the documents and join us in implementing them. I encourage everyone to take advantage of the wonderful recreation opportunities offered in Augusta, and enjoy the programs which help make Augusta a great community to live, work and raise a family. See you on the park bench, Glenn

ensure communities and future generations can reap the benefits of a protected and enhanced recreational environment. Now more than ever, we must demonstrate and show how parks are essential to the quality of the environment and lives of all.” (National Recreation and Parks Association)

Augusta Riverwalk

The Augusta Riverwalk spans between 6th & 10th Streets in Downtown Augusta along the Savannah River. The Riverwalk consists of two bricked levels: The upper level accessible via stairways/ramps located at the ends of 10th Street, 8th Street Plaza & 6th Streets and the lower level are accessed via the RiverWalk Marina (5th Street), the 8th Street Plaza, the Jessye Norman Amphitheatre, and the 10th Plaza (in front of the Marriott).

The Riverwalk features a children’s playground, various gardens, and includes several smaller venues for markets, special events and private celebrations. Two museums are located off the walkway along with the Jessye Norman Amphitheater and several restaurants. All this makes the Riverwalk great for families out for some fresh air along the Savannah River.

In 1986, construction began on the Augusta Riverwalk. The Riverwalk is built between the Savannah River and a historic levee that served to protect Augusta from the raging waters of the Savannah River. Augusta has an eventful history of floods. Today the river flows quietly through Augusta and the major floods are fading memories. The opening to the levee is marked to show the water levels for all of the floods that occurred.
