Park Updates
Park Updates The Augusta Recreation and Parks Department began construction on several park updates in early 2019. In preparation, staff are working closely with consultant teams to begin drafting designs that meet available budgets, complete priorities identified in the Park and Recreation Master Plan, and improve accessibility and safety.
We’ve received TWO grants to improve the inclusivity and safety at Henry H. Brigham Park. We are updating scoreboards and signs at the Aquatic Center, Newman Tennis Center, and the Patch (Municipal Golf Course). And that’s just a sample of the projects we’ve been working on this year. Additionally, five of our parks are getting updates to bring them into better compliance with accessibility and efficiency standards. Those five parks are:
Dyess Park Fleming Sports Complex including the Bernie Ward Community Center Jamestown Park Lake Olmstead Park, with the bulk of the work focusing on The Julian Smith BBQ Pit and Casino Lombard Mill Pond Trail, a project with our partner, the Central Savannah River Land Trust.

Riverwalk
Parks and Greenspaces in Augusta The Augusta Recreation and Parks Department includes over 70 regional, neighborhood, pocket, passive, and active parks, as well as athletic fields, playgrounds, exercise and walking trails, boating and fishing areas, picnic shelters, disc golf courses, greenspaces, dog parks, and basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts. The Parks Division also maintains the grounds at our recreation centers, the Riverwalk, and the Augusta Common area. Additionally, the Division works to preserve several city cemeteries and sustain landscaped medians in a variety of locations. Augusta's parks and open spaces are critical to the quality of life, happiness, and enjoyment for all. They affect the environmental quality, economic growth, and health and beauty of Augusta. The goal of the Parks Division is to provide the public with clean, safe, and aesthetically pleasing park facilities for community enjoyment. The Division looks for ways to empower citizens to protect the environment, encourage healthy lifestyles, and understand the impact parks and open spaces can have on communities through volunteer efforts. For more information on Augusta’s parks, please contact the Recreation and Parks Administrative Office at (706)796-5025.

Donations to Parks:
With more than 70 parks, we have a hard time picking our favorites. Each of our parks is unique and while they share many features, not all of them can be found everywhere. If you would like to go explore our parks, or if you are looking for something specific, you might find the listings on page 43 and page 44 quite helpful. Sorted by district, you will find our parks and community centers and all the amenities each one offers.
Would you like to memorialize a loved one or esteemed colleague, or recognize an important date such as a birth, graduation, wedding, etc.? Recreation and Parks can help by providing locations for memorial trees, benches and other park amenities. Please contact Gary Hegner at (706)796-5025 to discuss potential donation opportunities.
Volunteering in Parks: Are you or your group interested in helping to beautify Augusta? Our Parks Division works in conjunction with Keep Augusta Beautiful to provide volunteer opportunities within parks, playgrounds and greenspaces. If you or your group are interested in adopting a specific park, open space or flower bed, or wish to coordinate a volunteer project, please contact Keisha at Keep Augusta Beautiful, at (706) 312-4125.

Cemeteries
Recreation and Parks manages numerous cemeteries throughout Augusta, including Magnolia, Cedar Grove, WestView, Rollerville and Summerville (at Fitten Street); as well as several other small cemeteries (Arsenal, Lock and Dam, Morris Street and the Hephzibah (Rhodes) Cemetery. All of these collectively comprise more than 160 acres. FT staff manages these cemeteries, with assistance from RCCI inmate Magnolia Cemetery detail crews. A FT Records Clerk manages burial records and is working to digitize all remaining paper records. This task has been completed at Westview and Rollersville and is almost complete at Cedar Grove. Magnolia Cemetery still has almost 500 records remaining. Unfortunately, records are not available in some locations, such as at Summerville/ Fitten Street. This ongoing process allows friends and relatives to look up their loved ones’ information in a computerized database, which can be found by accessing www.augustaga.gov/City Services/Graveside Services. Currently, more than 101,000 people are interred within cemeteries managed by the City of Augusta, with an average of 10-15 new burials monthly.
