MARKETS ON BAY

Open everyday for everybody.

The ongoing development and gentrification of glebe and ultimo has resulted in a deprivation and lack of local participation of the local community in public spaces. The project aims to address the spatial inequity experienced by the people to accommodate for the growing development of glebe/ ultimo. Set on the bay street depot, the project proposes a marketplace run by the local community for the local community, surrounding itself around the celebration of food, from buying and selling of fresh foods to the conception of food, dining together and the breaking down of food waste.

The public space of the project is important to the scheme of the project. The masterplan surrounds itself along two major axis ways, the north- south being the major food axis connecting Wentworth park to the neighbourhood pocket park on the south. And the east west axis being the goods axis connecting the residential buildings of the site where goods and waste are transported from one part of the site to the other.

The concept of Markets came about through studying the activities on the site, how the people naturally gravitated towards public places of exchange. Be it through exchanging conversations, exchanging of goods, exchanging of knowledge or exchanging of food. This points towards the inherent human need for connection adn relationships. To create an equitable space that is accessible to everyone and for everyone to access it with dignity, the proposal aims to create a site for informal gathering where a local marketplace of exchange takes place for the local community.

In celebration of the site’s unique architectural characteristic, the language of arches is carried throughout the length of the site, creating a consistent backdrop for market

Use of folding doors on the ground level activates the streetfront, providing a permeable and temporary space activated by the community. Allowing for spillover of shops and creating a vibrant streetfront.
The old carpark is repurposed to become an indoor market in the morning and a vibrant event space during other times providing a unique space to cultivate arts and culture in Glebe/ Ultimo.

With a focus on human experience and personal relationships, the project aimed to create an equitable public space that people would feel dignified and confident to use. Rejuvinating the once closed-off site to become one that builds on personal relationships and memories.
