OUR STORY

The Romney at Mote House is a luxurious restaurant and bistro concept in the heart of the countryside. Located in the stunning Mote Park, the opulent setting and bracing, country air will enhance your experience of the local, seasonal menu. Our resident chef is committed to supporting Kent producers and regularly incorporates regional ingredients into our British classics. The venue features an upscale restaurant and a more informal bistro dining hall. The Romney is situated in the historic Audley Mote House village that boasts a beautifully-restored Grade II listed Georgian mansion and manicured grounds.

OUR SPACES

The Romney at Mote House boasts truly aweinspiring dining spaces. The bistro area is perfect for business lunches and casual events. Pops of blues and greens complement floor-to-ceiling gallery windows, casting light on the bright, ensconced diners. In the formal restaurant; delight your event attendees with immaculatelypresented seated dinners or bustling canape receptions. Soft, greys contrast beautifully with red-backed chairs and exquisite place settings to provide the perfect backdrop for our fresh, seasonal dishes. Our terrace is open to guests from April to October to make the most of the good weather and countryside setting.

LOCATION

The Romney at Mote House is in the Tudor-founded Mote Park near the village of Bearsted by Maidstone, Kent. While a rural village and civil parish, Bearsted is just minutes from Maidstone city centre. The town is on the north side of the River Len and boasts 59 listed buildings. The village is best known for the Grade I listed Church of the Holy Cross, renowned for its Holy Cross Day festivals dating back to 335 AD. The church features a Saxon arch and carved stone beasts that are thought to be bear figures; giving the town its name. However, earlier records list names like “Bergestede” and “Berghamstyde” that actually relate to holy mounds, not bears. Many believe that King Wihtred of Kent issued some of the earliest Saxon laws from a council held in the town in 696 AD. Local produce is important to Kent residents with many organisations supporting and promoting the “Garden of England” to visitors. Sport is popular, as are social gatherings in the local pubs and the private members club, The Bearsted and Thurnham.

HISTORY

The Romney at Mote House is located within Mote Park, one of the largest parks in the southeast at 440 acres. Its multi-use grounds include mini-golf, a boating lake, a miniature railway and a cricket ground once used by Kent County Cricket Club. The park has been visited by royals including Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn before they were married. Originally owned by King Edward IV’s consort, Elizabeth Woodville, the ground was eventually passed from Queen Elizabeth I to the Lords Romney. Mote House remained the family seat until 1891. Awarded the Green Flag in 2013, it remains a hugely popular English park.
