COULD COMPANIONSHIP BE JUST WHAT YOU NEED?
HEAD OF CARE, MICHELLE FORBES SHARES THE IMPORTANCE OF TAKING CONTROL OF YOUR OWN JOY AND ENJOYING EVERY DAY
Hello,
Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many wonderful people across our villages - each with their own story, routines, and way of life One of the things I often find myself talking about is something quite simple, but often overlooked: companionship
You might not have thought about it before, and that’s perfectly natural. After all, many of us have spent our lives managing just fine on our own. But companionship isn’t about losing independenceit’s about connection, enriching the life you already lead and making the most of your time
MICHELLE FORBES
HEAD OF CARE - AUDLEY GROUP
It could be popping out for a walk, a cup of tea and a chat about the morning news, sharing hobbies or company at an event you’ve been meaning to go to It’s not care in the traditional sense - it’s about support that fits around you
You might be thinking, “I’m fine on my own,” and of course you are But sometimes, especially after a change - like losing a partner, moving to a new place, or simply having fewer visitors - life can feel a bit quieter than we’d like. That’s where companionship can really help.
It’s one of the most valuable and understated services we offer at Audley It’s completely flexible - you choose how often, what you do, and how it fits into your lifestyle. There’s no pressure and certainly no obligation - it’s just about making life that little bit more enjoyable
And if the idea of someone turning up in a uniform feels a bit off-putting, that’s no problem we can keep things more low key, with no uniforms for more relaxed and natural experience It’s your time, your space and we’re here to blend in, not stand out
It’s something simple, yet it can make a big difference.
Often people hesitate because they don’t want to feel like they “need” help But this isn’t about needing - it’s about choosing. Choosing a bit of extra connection. Choosing to enjoy your day, your way, with someone who understands you
If you’ve ever had a quiet patch, missed a regular visitor, or just felt like a change of pace, companionship support might be worth a second thought.
Warmest regards
Michelle Forbes Head of Care - Audley Group

Fiona Currie and Oberon CLEVEDON
Oberon, a relaxed and affectionate Ragdoll cat who has become something of a mascot at the Clevedon village. “Owners love him (I hope), especially as he is not let out to do what cats do with the birds,” Fiona says
Oberon arrived at Clevedon as a 12-week-old kitten and took to harness life immediately “he was out on his lead from day one ” Now nearly three, he’s well known for his very early walks, particularly on Ilkley Moor “In the summer I take him out at 4 30am,” Fiona explains “In winter, it’s a tad later and by torchlight.”
Oberon often walks with Pippi, a MaltesePoodle mix. The unlikely duo has become a charming sight around Clevedon, regularly stopping for chats and strokes from passersby
Fiona recalls several favourite moments, including when Oberon boldly stalked a family of Roe deer “as far as his lead would go ” Another time, during a 5 30am walk, a police van stopped to investigate “I said, ‘Don’t most people walk their cats on the moors on a lead?’ and he just laughed and let us off!”

Patricia Mallock and Munch STANBRIDGE EARLS
Patricia Mallock, shares her home with Munch, a 26-year-old tortoise with a calm and curious nature. Munch loves hiding behind flower pots on the balcony and sleeps under sticks at night. Her favourite treats include emerald globe lettuce, shredded carrots and ice gems.
“I no longer take her out due to mobility, but in summer she enjoys little walks Once, she went missing for 16 days but thankfully, our head gardener, Mark, found her by the lake!”

Both have been with the couple since puppyhood, Their days include plenty of freedom via a custom dog flap, and long daily walks in the beautiful surrounding fields On one occasion Bruce took a Chalfont Dene friend to collect his friends medication. Bruce didn’t mention that the dogs were on the back seat when he went inside the pharmacy. While waiting, his friend had an almighty surprise when he suddenly felt someone licking his ear - Bubbles had sneaked up behind him and gave him a friendly lick - a story which still causes amusement to everyone

Sip into summer
The story behind three classic cocktails
There’s nothing more welcome than a refreshing cocktail on a summer’s day (or evening). Here’s a little background on three beloved summer classics - each one simple to make, light to sip, and rich in history
PIMM’S NO.1 CUP
A true icon of the British summer, Pimm’s was first created in 1840 by London oyster bar owner James Pimm, who developed it as a health tonic Its unique mix of gin, herbs, and fruit extracts quickly became popular and today, no garden party or tennis match feels quite complete without it.
Traditionally served with lemonade, mint, cucumber, orange, and strawberries, it’s as colourful as it is refreshing
TOM COLLINS
Crisp, citrusy, and wonderfully uncomplicated, the Tom Collins dates back to the 1870s. It was famously named after a tongue-in-cheek hoax in New York City, where patrons were told to ask bar staff if they'd seen “Tom Collins” a fictional man spreading rumours about them The cocktail, made with gin, lemon, and soda water, quickly became more popular than the joke.
APEROL SPRITZ
Originally created in 1919 in northern Italy, Aperol gained popularity in the post-war years as a lowalcohol aperitif. The now-famous Spritz - Prosecco, Aperol, and soda water, rose to international fame thanks to its bold colour, bittersweet taste, and effortless charm
Light and lively, it’s ideal for slow summer afternoons.

PREVENT FALLS. EASY WAYS TO STAY STEADY
Falls are one of the most common accidents in the home, but the good news is they’re often preventable
SECURE RUGS AND CARPETS:
Loose rugs can be a tripping hazard Try using non-slip pads to keep them in place or opt for rugs with rubber backing
GOOD LIGHTING:
Make sure areas like hallways and stairways are well-lit to help you navigate safely. Motion-sensor lights are great for automatically lighting up spaces when you need them.
ADD HANDRAILS AND GRAB BARS:
Installing grab bars near toilets and in the shower can give you extra support and help prevent falls
KEEP YOUR INDOOR SPACES ORGANISED. REDUCING HAZARDS AND CLUTTER
DECLUTTER REGULARLY:
Keep floors clear, especially in high traffic areas like hallways and near stairs. Regularly tidying up can prevent clutter from building up and help you move around your home more freely
MAINTAIN CLEAR WALKWAYS:
Ensure that pathways throughout your home, like those leading to the kitchen or bathroom, are free of obstacles Arranging furniture to allow easy movement will help you avoid any unexpected bumps
THE CHOIR’S RECENT PERFORMANCE AT THE VILLAGE VE DAY CELEBRATIONS
Singing for pleasure
WRITTEN BY DR RUTH SLATER
Since 2015, singing has been part of life at St Elphin’s Park It began when the late Mrs Dorothy Moore organised carol singing around the village one Christmas. A year later came the first Christmas concert, and by 2017 a full village Cabaret was born, featuring singing, dancing, playlets, monologues, and readings This tradition continues today through the Singing for Pleasure group, which was relaunched after the pandemic and now flourishes once again.
I now convene the group, having taken on the role after Mrs Moore We are open to all –there are no auditions – and we encourage as many owners as possible to join in.
As one of our posters says: “So, if you fancy doing something sociable with others and making music, then do come along You do not have to be able to read music, so do not let that put you off ”
Our membership is varied: some have sung in choirs throughout their adult lives; others are returning to singing after many years. Everyone is willing to try something new. We’re lucky to have Mrs Vivienne Dorian, who initially joined to sing but now often plays piano for us
We rehearse on Thursday afternoons at 4:30 in the Studio, with around twenty regular members – a good mix of men and women
“It has literally changed my life for the better… If the day has not gone well, an hour in the choir restores me to
a happy
state. It's free and yet it's priceless.”
VIVIENNE DORIAN
“I do not read music, had never sung in a choir before, [but] I thoroughly enjoy coming down on Thursday. The members of our group are such a very friendly and welcoming crowd. The concerts are always well attended and seem to be appreciated by everyone, so it’s a win - win from my point of view.”
MIKE SHEERAN, AGE 93
Before our 2024 Christmas concert, we met twice a week – testament to the group’s enthusiasm and dedication
We’ve had many memorable moments We performed at the St Elphin’s Park celebrations for the late Queen’s Jubilee and King Charles III Coronation, where we gave the first recorded performance of Our Gracious King, a two-part song composed by Joy Byford from Stay at Home Choir. In May 2024, inspired by our Christmas concert format, we created a seasonal celebration in words and music, marking the change from spring to summer Alongside our singers and readers, we included piano solos and duets – a true village effort.
Our repertoire is eclectic: from canons and spirituals to Linden Lea by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Dream a Little Dream of Me, and Do You Hear the People Sing from Les Misérables as suggested by Mike Sheeran, one of our founding members We discuss and agree performance dynamics together – making rehearsals collaborative and performances rewarding
If you’re part of a group at Audley Villages, why not share your story too? These shared experiences bring happiness, connection, and a real sense of belonging to village life Contact us at: stories@audleyvillages co uk
Of course, there are challenges. As conductor, I sometimes struggle to get across what I mean – especially when encouraging members to lift their heads and connect with the audience
From the perspective of members of the group, this is perhaps the most relevant, as voiced by member Roger Clough:
“A challenge for all of us is the different levels of singing experience and ability. For me who loves singing, there is the risk of sounding my voice in public, of others hearing me, of spoiling the show Added to this, are hearing problems: in part this is the checking that several of us do as to just what was the instruction we have been given and I have an added uncertainty as to how far my hearing difficulties impact on the sound that I make ”
The challenges are real, but we support one another with humour, tolerance and friendship. For two or three weeks a sore throat kept me away from the group “When are you coming back?” someone asked me “We miss you ”
Learning and performing any kind of music is an amazing way to engage the body and brain in physical and emotional activity, and as I stand in front of the group, showing the rhythm and supporting the singing, I can see this reflected in the faces of the group when it all comes together.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
Introducing Clarissa Lenherr.
NUTRITIONIST AND AUDLEY WELLNESS COLLABORATOR
We caught up with Clarissa to talk about everything from gut health to guilty pleasures and why it’s never too late to start feeling your best
Q: Clarissa, what first drew you to the world of nutrition?
It all began with my own health challenges. I struggled with unexplained digestive issues for years, bloating, fatigue, frustration. That curiosity became a passion. Once I experienced how transformative nutrition could be in my own life, I knew I wanted to help others achieve the same
Q: What are the biggest misconceptions about healthy eating?
That it has to be extreme People often think wellness is all about green juices, fasting, or cutting things out But really, it’s about balance, consistency, and enjoyment Small, sustainable changes make the biggest difference over time.
Q: Are there any wellness trends worth watching in later life?
Gut health remains hugely important - it’s linked to everything from mood to immunity
Q: Is there a client story that’s stayed with you?
Absolutely I worked with a woman in her 60s who’d struggled with energy, digestion, and sleep for over a decade. After a few months of support balancing her blood sugar, improving her microbiome, and optimising her sleep, she emailed to say, “I feel like myself again.” That line still gives me goosebumps. Nutrition isn’t about perfection, it’s about helping people reconnect with how good they can feel
Q: Many of our owners have spent years caring for others. What’s your advice for prioritising personal wellness now?
I would say: this is your time It’s never too late to make changes that support your wellbeing My approach is never about rigid rules - it’s about small, enjoyable shifts that make you feel good in both body and mind.
Q: What nutrition questions come up most for those over 55?
Energy, digestion, memory - those are big ones People also ask about joint stiffness, bone health, maintaining a healthy weight without dieting, and whether supplements like vitamin D, magnesium, or omega-3s are worth taking (the answer is often yes!)
RECIPE:
Vegan Omega-3 Power Bowl
Q: How does nutrition affect mood, sleep, or memory - particularly as we age?
More than we realise As we get older, we become more sensitive to blood sugar dips, nutrient deficiencies and gut imbalances, all of which impact how we feel. Nutrients like magnesium, B vitamins and omega-3s are key for brain and nervous system function.
“Progress over perfection. Your health is a journey, not a race. ”
Clarissa LenHerr
Q: How do you see your role within the Audley community?
As a source of inspiration and guidance Whether that’s through shaping menus, running workshops on energy or sleep, or just being available for conversations, my goal is to make healthy living feel joyful and achievable.
Q: What’s your go-to healthy comfort meal?
Roasted veg with tahini drizzle, quinoa or lentils, some fresh herbs, chopped dates and walnuts It’s nourishing and satisfying with natural sweetness And I’ll never say no to a few squares of dark chocolate after dinner!
INGREDIENTS:
100g roasted cauliflower
100g chickpeas
50g dark leafy greens
1 tbsp flaxseed dressing
(flaxseed oil, lemon juice, salt)
30g walnuts
50g fresh blueberries
METHOD:
Roast cauliflower and chickpeas at 180°C for 20 minutes.
Toss with leafy greens, walnuts, and blueberries Drizzle with flaxseed dressing.
Meet Gilly’s Girls
In the grounds of Audley Inglewood, a graceful transformation happens each Wednesday afternoon It’s not just in the pirouettes or perfectly poised arms it’s in the laughter, the camaraderie, and the renewed sense of energy that fills the studio. At the centre of it all is Mrs Gilly Robinson, a former professional ballerina whose weekly senior ballet class has become a joyful highlight for a group of Owners affectionately known as Gilly’s Girls.
Though Gilly modestly describes herself as "retired", her legacy in the world of dance continues. Having trained at the Royal Ballet School, Gilly went on to perform at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and with the London Festival Ballet (now the English National Ballet)
After being diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, she left the stage and channelled her talents into teaching, becoming a distinguished ballet examiner for the Cecchetti faculty of the ISTD. Over a 34-year examining career, she travelled the world from Canada to Italy and Malta, - guiding dancers with expertise, warmth, and insight
“I don’t expect my girls to do high jumps or fast pirouettes!
But posture - posture matters. Standing tall with a strong core is important at any age. ”
Gilly’s own journey into ballet is remarkable. A self-described “late starter,” she fell in love with ballet aged 13, after taking a few classes during the school holidays Her current boarding school offered no dance opportunities, so she asked her father if she could audition for The Royal Ballet School. To everyone’s surprise, including her own, she was offered a place. That bold step laid the foundations for a lifelong career in dance
Today, her weekly class at Inglewood is the perfect expression of everything she loves about ballet: discipline, artistry, and community. She’s watched every participant grow in strength, poise, and confidence
The class takes a traditional approach, including barre work and centre practice with port de bras and adagio sequences. The music, recorded by Marion Porter, Head Pianist at The Royal Ballet School, fills the room with elegance and energy
More than just a physical activity, the group offers a sense of connection. “We’re all good friends now,” says one member “We’d never have come together if it wasn’t for Gilly and the class ”
WE SHOULD ALL LIVE BY GILLY’S MOTTO:
“If you go wrong, it doesn’t matter just go wrong gloriously!”
The benefits of ballet at any age are well known - improved posture, coordination, mental clarity, and overall wellbeing but the magic at Inglewood is something more It’s the music, the movement, and the joy of learning something beautiful together
As Gilly says, “I am never happier than when some beautiful music is playing and everyone is happy learning.”
Above: Gilly dancing alongside Anthony Dowell in Les Patineurs at Royal Opera House Anthony went on to become principal and artistic director at the Royal Ballet.
Below: At a Christmas lunch, the group surprised their teacher with bespoke branded tops - proudly wearing their name: Gilly’s Girls

Golden Hour is the time just after sunrise and before sunset when the sun is low in the sky The light is softer and warmer, creating a golden glow that lasts about 30 - 60 minutes.
