JUMPING THE BROOM AND BEYOND: EXPLORING AFRICAN AND GULLAH GEECHEE MARRIAGE CUSTOMS"

When it comes to some of the traditions, "jumping the broom" is the most popular, but there are others that can be incorporated into marriage ceremonies.

African people, specifically Gullah Geechee people, have always valued marriage and love. In Kemet (ancient Egypt), an African pharaoh wrote a love poem to his wife, the great queen. As soon as Reconstruction began in the United States, Africans immediately sought to solemnize their bonds. They realized that the greatest institution for their growth, success, and advancement was the "family," and marriage was a key component.

Annie Bell Walters of Hilton Head Island, SC provided advice to strengthen the bonds of your marriage with your spouse so that you can build family and community. Ceremonies help in the remembrance and maintenance of the vows.

16

The African Spirit or Ancestor Invocation

For some Gullah Geechee people in Savannah, GA, and in Riceboro, GA, at Geechee Kunda, they have incorporated the African Spirit of Day Clean: The African Soul into their wedding ceremonies and renewal of vows ceremonies. An ancestral reflection is made during the ceremony. The spirit then invokes the time-honored tradition of marriage, love, and how they must use this as a part of the foundation of the marriage as they go through. Remembrance and words of the couple's family members or someone important to them are shared to let them know how both are blessed to have each other.

Libation

Libation is done at weddings with the ancient practice of pouring out of water, alcohol, or black strap molasses. Libation is traditionally poured in remembrance of the Creator who has sanctioned the love and marriage. Libation is poured to remember and honor family members who have passed on. It acknowledges the couple and the others at the marriage who are important to the family unit. The libation will honor the fruits of the marriage - the children who are gained through blood or the journey of life, those already born and those to come in the future. The libation provides an opportunity for acknowledgement, recognition, reflection, wisdom, and insight to be imparted to the couple. In the ceremony, the couple may leave an open seat to honor a parent who has passed away.

17

The 4 Elements of Love and Marriage

Honey, Cayenne, Lemon, and Vinegar are infused in the ceremony. The elements represent the experiences of life that will be experienced during the marriage. The husband and wife will taste the honey, symbolic of the sweetness that will be experienced in the marriage. Cayenne or red pepper is tasted to symbolize the passion or hotness of marriage and love. Lemon is tasted to let the spouses know that tartness or sour times will come, but the sweetness of their love will change the tart or sour moments for the better. Vinegar is tasted for the bitter. It will appear during life, but it will be conquered based on the strength of their union of love.

Nigerian Money Spray

Originating with Yoruba and Ibo people in Nigeria, they spray money to symbolize a showering of happiness, good fortune, love for the couple, and to financially help them start their new life together. The spouses are brought in dancing behind the wedding party. The wedding attendees go up to the spouses, putting the money on their forehead or casting it out at the spouse or spouses. The money is collected and put aside for the couple for them to start their life as one.

HOW TO INCORPORATE YOUR LOVE LANGUAGE IN YOUR WEDDING

As the wedding day grows closer, the bride and groom to be are focused on making their special day memorable. There is the dress to be chosen, colors, invitations, rings and many other decisions. Somewhere in all those plans, the importance of the connection of the couple becomes secondary; but they still need to relate in a healthy, balanced way

This is a good time to take a first look or another look at each of your love languages. Love languages refer to the way a person prefers to express love to, and receive love from a partner. There are 5 basic love languages that can become easy to practice and make a way of life in a healthy, balanced relationship.

GET YOUR MINDSET RIGHT: THE IMPORTANCE OF MENTAL PREPAREDNESS FOR A SUCCESSFUL MARRIAGE

“Marriage is tough!” That’s what most married people will tell you. They say it so much that it can really diminish the attractiveness of marriage. What is marriage anyway? A legally binding contract that requires you to share your assets and space? There’s a ceremony that makes you think twice before leaving a relationship? The truth is, that the answer is different for everyone and because of that, it is important to be sufficiently prepared before entering into a marriage in the first place.

23

When we say prepared, we are not talking about financially or physically, but being mentally fit is the key. Think about it: Having someone in your space and in your face, finding the need to compromise on issues that were once individual decisions, pushing clothes closer together to make closet space. Then there are the deeper issues: Child rearing beliefs, definitions of loyalty, and conflict resolution. Without mental fortitude and patience, married couples simply become part of the 40-50 % of 1st marriages that end in divorce and 60-67 % of 2nd marriages that also end in divorce. These statistics are provided by the American Psychological Association as most couples tend to try therapy once things have gone south in the relationship.

A better option would be proactivity. Therapy, before marriage, can help couples highlight underlying issues and address unspoken questions and dislikes. Mental preparedness also involves demonstrating transparency and establishing boundaries. Entering into a marriage does not mean that all boundaries will dissipate. Instead, it will be increasingly important to have already set boundaries and expectations so that each partner can determine if they agree or if they need to seek out other options. Marriage is a commitment, spiritually, legally, and emotionally that binds two people together for what is supposed to be forever.

The common belief if that each are each other’s better halves, but a more ideal situation is one where both partners come in 100% whole, already.

FINDING YOUR WINGMAN: A GUIDE TO PICKING THE PERFECT BEST MAN

29

Wedding bells are ringing, and you're in the thick of planning the big day. You've got the suit, the flowers, and the venue, but there's one crucial decision you haven't made yet: who will be your trusty wingman as you tie the knot? That's right, it's time to choose your best man.

Picking your best man is no small feat. This is the person who will stand by your side on one of the most important days of your life, and who will likely play a crucial role in planning the pre-wedding festivities. But fear not! We've got some tips to help you choose the best man for the job.

First and foremost, think about who you can count on. Your best man should be someone you trust implicitly and who you know will have your back no matter what. This is not the time to choose a flaky friend who might bail on you at the last minute.

Next, consider your best man's personality. Are you looking for someone who can make you laugh and keep the party going, or someone who will be a calming presence during a potentially stressful day? Think about what you need from your best man and choose someone who fits the bill.

Don't forget about logistics, either. If you're planning a destination wedding, for example, it might make more sense to choose a best man who lives closer to your venue. Similarly, if you're planning a more low-key affair, you might want to choose someone who is more low-key themselves.

Finally, remember that your best man should be someone who knows you well. This is the person who will be giving the toast at your reception, after all! Choose someone who can speak to your relationship and who knows how much this day means to you.

Now that you've got some tips for choosing your best man, it's time to start considering your options. Think about your closest friends and family members, and don't be afraid to ask someone who might not be the obvious choice. After all, sometimes the best wingman is the one you least expect

My name is Eboni Holmes and I have been practicing Yoga for over 15 years. The 5 Pillars That Honor The Legacy of Harriet Tubman & Goals of BMFF

1. God First: Harriet believed in a Higher Power that guided her through the most dangerous situations, freeing hundreds of slaves and never being caught. Being a woman of small stature and living well into her 90’s, we must believe that she had supernatural help guiding and protecting her. She was a believer, and allowed GOD to lead her to freedom.

2. Land and Connection to nature: Harriet knew the land, the plants for survival, the stars for guidance, and the animals to be aware of. She did not just survive the humans and dogs chasing her down, she also survived the wilderness with women, children, and elders in tow. She was a natural woman and an herbalist who healed soldiers who were dying of dysentery in Beaufort, SC with herbs she found at the river.
