How December 31st Became a Milestone in Black History An electric excitement was brewing. The news they were watching for could come at any moment. We know December 31st as New Year's Eve, but nearing the end of the Civil Warm our Ancestors knew it as "Watch Night" or "Freedom's Eve". President Lincoln has issued the Emancipation Proclamation, but the declaration wouldn't take effect until New Year's Day. As the new year drew closer, so did our Ancestors anticipation. On December 31, 1862, numerous free Black communities gathered, With the announcement of the Emancipation Proclamation, freedom would light the way into the New Year. This wouldn't be the traumatic "Hiring Day" of the past. Historically, New Year's Day was known as "Hiring Day". Families were torn apart as greedy enslavers looked to profit. To avoid being sold, escapees ran during Christmas, relying on the holiday to hide their absence. Whether waiting to run to freedom or to hear the news of emancipation, our Ancestors reclaimed New Year's as a time for liberation. At the end of 2024, let's gather in community and remember the hope, courage, and bravery of our Ancestors www.wepushblack.com 17

The Las t Pag e o f Dying It is a difficult page to turn. You are ready to be complete with the chapters you have read over many times. You are familiar with those steps taken before failure. By finishing, you are acknowledging success. It was a difficult read. To taste each word aloud; to know why letters are so heavy. You look again at the cover and you see others but you can't see what they have seen. When did having a new conversation with someone become scary. It's going to be difficult. And that is accepting the turns and the tears and the misread words and the unsure meaning between each line. You've filled them with all of you, the parts you like. It's time to express the hurt that comes with dying.

Sh eila C. Joh n son : Ju st Call M e Sh eila How does a person choose a new over their first? They don't. Reading the story of Sheila C. Johnson began with wanting to understand someone's success story. Talking to my colleagues here at Hello Savannah, Hello Atlanta, Hello Jacksonville, and now Hello Africa; what started as a bid on what we were going to do for Black History Month, ended as a bet. Choose someone you think we should know more about that you didn't know before. I didn't really know anything about Sheila Johnson except for maybe hearing her name from time to time over the course of forty plus years. Now I am mesmerized.

about how her family was always there for her, that sort of story. The one that she shares in her book "Walk Through Fire: A Memoir of Love, Lost, and Triumph" will remove any fairytale assumptions. Did You Know? Sheila C. Johnson became the first female African American Billionaire after Black Entertainment Television (BET) , the company she cofounded in 1979, was bought by Viacom in 2001 for 3 Billion US.

Too many things hit hard during the telling of her story. The type of things that she lived with that could have truly crushed anyone, that on one side "they were proud of the fact that there was this Did You Know? Black History Month representation out there, and for it to have originally began as Negro History and scandal- it sort of shatters the image of Literature Week by the urging of Carter G. what we were trying to build." and on the Woodson. To learn more visit asalh.org. other "It was this constant berating of who I Association for the Study of African really was - my identity was being stripped." American Life and History. She moved 13 times as a champion in Illinois, as well as the first child. What she recalls as "the most painful African American to do so. Continuing thing for me to ever watch" was witnessing that love she became a music teacher at Sidwell Friends Private School where she the hardships of her mother manifest and finding her in a nervous breakdown as a founded the Young Strings in Action teenager when her father tells them "I'm youth Orchestra. She speaks on how much we are suppressed as African Americans, how we are taught to be seen and not heard. Sheila C. Johnson "It just went against who I am. It's not in my DNA. And I love challenges." Did you know? Sheila C. Johnson is the only Black female co-owner of three professional sports teams. Moving forward, Sheila C. Johnson, now 74 at the time of this article, has not only become a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist, she is the owner of Salamander Hotel and Resorts (salamanderhotels.com) which began in Middleburg Virginia. The story behind the naming of "Salamander " is something you should really experience for yourself in her book. Instead we leave with this passage from sheilacjohnson.blog: "For those who may not know me, I am Sheila C. Johnson. But you can just call me Sheila. And while there are so many things I could say about myself, for simplicity sake, please consider me a recovering ? but proud and unbowed ? violin and cheerleading addict from Maywood, just west of Chicago. Also, please understand too that as both an African American and a woman ? one who came of age in the very heart of the white and male-dominated 1950?s and 60?s ? my perspective is that of something of an outsider, one who?s spent her entire life working and fighting, often against the longest of odds, to gain even the smallest toehold on the American Dream." - Andromeda Gibbons

Em pow er : Or lan do Jon es The theme for this month is empowerment. Orlando Jones, age 55 at the time of this article, has stared in and written for a number of shows spanning nearly three decades. He has been a member of the Writers Guild for 35 years, surely writing well before his notable work for NBC'S "A Different World" from 1991 to 1992. Many remember Orlando Jones for the work that gained him a spotlight by unearthing his comedic talent in the world of MadTv. During an interview with Rich Eisen, he tells us how he was a fan of the comic Mad Magazine. He had received word about a "cattle call audition" that he could attend. No one knew him then as a comedian. He was a writer for sitcoms. "Just about anyone you could think of was there...whoever was auditioning at that time, and I looked up, Quincy Jones chose me, and I got a job on MadTv." Orlando Jones has given speeches on behalf of the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation (cbcfinc.org) which focuses its efforts to increase black representation and leadership within public service and policy position careers on Capital Hill, recruiting talented men and women of color from around the world, providing scholarships and means to pursue a livelihood different than they knew were possible. Continuing his efforts to empower young men and women in their pursuits, Orlando Jones teamed up with singer, actor Jason Weaver at South Carolina State University

where Weaver presented his master class "From Dream to Screen." Jones is also a co-founder of Legion of Creatives along side Jay Williams and Noam Dromi. Orlando Jones contributes his advisory and outreach talents while sitting as a board member for Bandwagon, founded by CEO Harold Hughes (bandwagonfanclub.com ). Though there are many examples to pull from on how Jones helped shaped the entertainment industry, perhaps his most daring was the role he portrayed on Starz American Gods as Mr. Nancy. He reached a profound number of fans through his depiction of Anansi the Trickster God, his adaptation inspired by the stories his great grandfather told him as a young boy. However, I think that one of the things that Jones did to empower others is when he decided it was time to open up when he felt wrongly let go from the show. Many who watched the show remember the powerful monologue he delivered about the selling of his children with Melanin in their skin. Not everyone knows the full backstory, I couldn't even tell you I understand everything even after pouring

31

through the articles that I could find. I know that showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green wanted Orlando for the role.

The original showrunners were let go without Jones really knowing only that the writers he was excited to work with were no longer there. I learned that Neil Gaiman asked Jones to write a character bible for Mr. Nancy because they didn't have one. A new storyrunner would influence the direction of the show, focusing on another part of Neil Gaiman's vision that would not include Anansi as a character. No one informed Jones of this development, the consequences causing him to go without work for 18 months, due to a decision deemed by higher authorities that his character portrayal of "angry gets s* #! done" was not sending the "right message for Black America." I couldn't help but wonder how can anyone presume to know what is the right message for Black America. Jones says in an interview "why would you do that to my family." He was passionate and concerned for his fans as well as his own well being, not wanting anyone to spend their hard earned dollar for something that they didn't want or ask for. He wanted people to know what had really happened, and it's unfairness and how they weren't even going to pay him for his work. He stood up to them, and empowered others to do the same. Some days, when we would go out t her e, Rober t would use his elect r ic wheelchair t o boar d t he cit y's CAT mobilit y bus for t he elder ly and disabled. Fr om t he days we played as k ids t o our t eenage year s, I saw Rober t get t ing on and of f t hat mobilit y bus ever ywher e I went . At t he mall, movies, and local high school games, Rober t was t her e. When I became an adult , t he same cont inued. To t hink of it , it is sad t hat I never went up t o him and spoke. That all changed once I saw him at t he par k t he ot her day.

But t oday, as I look back on t hat exchange bet ween t he t r ansient hippies and Rober t , a quest ion comes t o mind: "Why did t hese guys gr avit at e t o Rober t and plead t o him like t hat ?" The t hought t hat came t o my mind was t hat t hey had all t he act ivit y of t heir limbs, but like Rober t , a piece of t hem suf fer ed a disabilit y. These men wer e poor and faint of hear t . Rober t N est a M ar ley How does one discuss social justice, music, the Movement, Freedom, Righteousness, Pan-Africanism, love, creativity and not include the name Robert Nesta Marley. Bob Marley is one of the great icons of music, known for songs such as ?One Love,? ?I Shot the Sheriff,? ?No Woman, No Cry? and one of my all-time favorites, ?Get Up Stand Up.? Bob Marley was born on February 6, 1945, in Jamaica and he later died on May 11, 1981. Marley is a pioneer of Reggae .Throughout his musical career as a singer, performer, and songwriter, he oftentimes fused elements of reggae, ska, and rock-steady to create the sound that we love and attribute to his musical genius. Bob Marley and the Wailers, a group formed with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer, began as the Wailers. After 11 albums and signing to Island Music, they changed their name to Bob Marley and the Wailers. Bob Marley was a vocal figure in conversations regarding Pan-Africanism, legalization of marijuana, and democratic socialism. In 1976, due to his controversial (at the time) political views, someone attempted to assassinate Marley in his home. One of his band members and his wife were seriously injured and they survived. Bob Marley sustained injuries as well and 2 days later, he was on stage performing for ?Smile, Jamaica? that had a crowd of over 80,000 people and was organized by the Prime Minister of Jamaica. Bob Marley died in 1981 of Melanoma, a form of cancer, that had spread throughout his body to include his brain at the tender age of 36. His works live on through his children, grandchildren and fans. We will always remember the Gr eat Bob M ar ley.
