Welcome W

elcome to the 2015/2016 Season at Alberta Theatre Projects!

We couldn’t be more excited to have you with us, whether you’re here for the first time, you’ve been here for a long time, or you’re somewhere in between. We’ve got a terrific line-up for you this year. Some amazing performers are coming your way. To name just a few, we’re proud to host Sonja Smits, a Canadian icon of stage and screen; young Calgarian firebrand Geoffrey Brown who will be appearing in his own play, The Circle; Rebecca Northan, the creator of and a performer in our Holiday Show Legend Has It, who is becoming known globally for her innovative, audience-friendly and allages brand of improvisation; Blues sensations Raoul Bhaneja and Divine Brown who square off through music and story in Life, Death and the Blues; one of Calgary’s most beloved performers Haysam Kadri, in our world premiere adaptation of Cockroach, based on the novel by Rawi Hage; 4

and introducing the supremely entertaining Steven Gallagher, who will rock our socks off, solo, in our spring comedy about Barbra Streisand’s basement mall, Buyer & Cellar. Here at ATP it’s about more than just the shows. I hope you’ll join us for one of over 50 events in our hugely popular program, The Exchange, where audience and artists meet and mingle to talk theatre and think big. New this season, you can hear readings of plays in development, meet the playwrights after every preview performance of our Enbridge New Canadian Plays, and attend an edition of Pechakucha, Calgary’s unique and funky speaker series. To see the full list of events, check out The Exchange Calendar or visit our new and improved website at ATPlive.com To find out even more about all of the exciting things going on at ATP, check out our season magazine, LIVE, available in our lobby. You can also receive our e-newsletter, The Insider–just

sign up online. Let us know what you think of it all on Twitter @contemporaryATP or by emailing us at info@atplive.com On to Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike. I was at a conference of theatre professionals recently. At one point a newcomer to the group piped up. “We’ve spent three days talking about serious stuff,” he said, “how theatre can change the world. I just want to say, the theatre I do is meant to make people laugh! What about joy and entertainment?? Making people laugh is hard enough!”

P.S. Up next in October: our first Enbridge New Canadian Play of the season, The Circle, by young Calgarian Geoffrey Brown. A total contrast to Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike, it’s the kind of provocative new Canadian play ATP is known for: fierce, raw, and real. I hope people will feel the daring and compassionate honesty that leapt off the page at me, demanding that I program it and share it with you. P.P.S. There’s still time to join us as a subscriber. Call Talore or Manisha in our box office at 403-294-7402

He’s right. Sometimes we can take ourselves a bit too seriously, on both sides of the footlights. And I think, fundamentally, that’s what Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike is about. Ultimately, I do believe theatre can transform our world. I do believe theatre can be a life-changing experience. I believe one of the ways it does that is to open our minds and our hearts in the friendliest, most effortless, and most engaging way possible: by making us laugh. Thank you for coming today. Enjoy!

Director’s Note g ly n i s l e y s h o n n the very first day of rehearsal for this wickedly funny new play by Christopher Durang, Vanessa Porteous, ATP’s Artistic Director said something that resonated strongly with me. She observed that as a culture, we often dismiss plays that bring us the gift of laughter. I too have observed how often brilliant comedies are carelessly dismissed as mindless entertainment, somehow deemed not as important or relevant as contemporary drama. One only has to read plays by Oscar Wilde, Moliere and Shakespeare to realize just how short sighted this narrow point of view is... and how much a brilliantly crafted comedy has to offer us all.

O

Imagine my delight then, when I was given the opportunity to work on the latest play by one of contemporary theatre’s most gifted playwrights–Christopher Durang. As a mature writer, Durang has crafted a wise and witty play that centers firmly on family and the complex bonds that unite three vastly different siblings. Now in late middle age... life for Vanya, Sonia and Masha is a truly Chekovian mix of regret about the past, anxiety about the future, while navigating a present that is full of unexpected twists of fate. The term ‘Chekovian’ was used deliberately here, because in this play Durang has taken many of the themes (and plots) from the plays of Chekov and mixed them in a blender, resulting in a wildly unpredictable cocktail of downright silliness and surprisingly touching loss. Figures from Disney prance about a Bucks County country house, housekeepers foretell the future and we are invited to laugh with, and at, the deeply flawed and refreshingly resilient characters that Durang brings so fearlessly to life. This comedy, without a trace of self consciousness, ranges from the witty to the wacky in the blink of an eye. And throughout this process, we have felt the spirit of Durang inspiring us to embrace his play with fierce and fearless honesty. The rewards have been great and we now take real pleasure in sharing this affirming, and entertaining, play with you all. Enjoy.

elcome to The Exchange at ATP, an event series that brings together audiences and artists to mix and mingle, talk theatre and think big.

W

As Artistic Associate and a production dramaturg at ATP, one of my favourite parts of my job is to have conversations about the plays in our season. I love learning more about the playwright, or finding out how the designer created the set. I’m curious about the world of the play, and how what I see onstage connects to my everyday life. I don’t think there are any questions that are too big or too small. This year, there are over 50 events in The Exchange! From a pre-show conversation, to a themed wine tasting, a new play reading, or a behind-the-scenes tour in the Martha Cohen Theatre; some events are brand new, some are old favourites, and all of them are a chance to express ourselves. Last season, I met a mother daughter duo who brought their own special teacups to Afternoon Tea, sailing enthusiasts who wore their nautical duds to see The Last Voyage of Donald Crowhurst, linguist super fans of the new language created for Butcher, and a girl guide troupe who baked homemade brownies for the designer of Charlotte’s Web. Over 2,000 audience members shared their curiosity, passion, and their personalities at The Exchange. Join us as together we explore the themes of the plays in our season and celebrate the art of live theatre. I look forward to meeting you, Laurel Green Artistic Associate Here are some Exchange events that I’m really looking forward to this season. For a complete list of The Exchange events this season visit ATPlive.com, or pick up The Exchange program guide and LIVE Magazine.
