A Note From

Vicki

he characters in Constellations by Nick Payne navigate (again and again) the myriad of possibilities that exist in their relationship. The play invites us to consider some of the moments in our lives where a relationship or a career may have pivoted based on a decision we made or a force outside our control. There are infinite ways our lives can go.

T

On the first day of rehearsal for each of our shows Alberta Theatre Projects staff and the artists involved get to know each other through a round of introductions. For Constellations we asked everyone to share what they might have been doing had they not chosen whatever brought them to ATP. A few folks might have been police officers, a few thought they would probably be retired by now and, to everyone’s surprise, we discovered that David Fraser, ATP’s Director of Production and the set and lighting designer for Constellations, would have been a dentist. As I heard everyone speak about what they might have done I was grateful that they had chosen the paths they did and that I have had the pleasure of working with them. I am pivoting in a new direction in March and will be leaving my role as Executive Director to reconnect with my artistic work and apply what I have learned in my time here to new projects. In my 16 years at ATP there have been 142 shows produced. Those shows were produced by exceptional artists from across Canada, supported by phenomenal staff and enjoyed by the most supportive audience in Calgary. I am deeply honoured that my path has crossed with you all. Thank you. Until we meet again, Vicki Stroich Executive Director

A BEAUTIFUL VISUAL LANGUAGE AN INTErvIEw wITh JACQUI BURNHAM, AMErICAN SIgN LANgUAgE (ASL) CONSULTANT AND INSTrUCTOr FOr CONSTELLATIONS ATP we are excited to be working with you as the ASL Consultant and Instructor for our production of Nick Payne’s Constellations, Jacqui. we’d love to hear more about you. Jacqui Burnham I have a diverse background with various experiences, ranging from doing Artistic Director work with Sign Theatre, to teaching American Sign Language, and Deaf Interpreter work to currently running a program for Deaf Plus/Deafblind individuals, specializing in Deafblind Intervenors. I want to share my background as a hearing person, who suddenly lost their hearing at age 6 ½ after a bout of meningitis which resulted in my becoming Deaf. ATP how would you describe that experience? Jacqui Burnham During that time, I felt my world was ripped apart, not quite understanding the world surrounding me as a Deaf person, and not quite able to accept the suddenly silent world without sound. This itself was a journey to discovery and acceptance for me as a Deaf person. It is a unique experience to partake, and complicated to understand. I would not trade it for anything as it has given me the opportunity to better understand myself as a Deaf person, advocate and educator. It is such an essential part of my life to educate and teach those interested in Deaf Culture and American Sign Language. This language is the most beautifully visually expressed form of communication. ATP It is captivating to watch you, our ASL/English Interpreters Stephanie hoebers and Andrea Sereda and the actors speak that beautiful language on our stage. what would you like people to know about ASL? Jacqui Burnham As a Deaf person and in my various roles within the community I am often asked about ASL and Deaf Culture. The important thing to keep in mind is that ASL Photo top: Left to right, ASL Consultant/Instructor Jacqui Burnham, ASL/English Interpreter Stephanie hoebers, Actors Mike Tan and Jamie Konchak, ASL/English Interpreter Andrea Sereda, and Director valerie Planche at the first read-through of Constellations. itself is a language with no written form, but rather is a visual language used by the Deaf Community all over the USA and Canada. ASL is not international, rather each country has their own unique based sign language depending on the country of origin. ASL is a visualgesture language, having its own semantic and syntactic structure, used by Deaf people. For many Deaf people, ASL and Deaf culture ties the Deaf community together, and allows us to form a community which is unique and important to our daily aspect of life. Deaf culture in any Deaf community is the core part of how Deaf people form ties within our communities and come together and share a common bond and love for our language. ATP Thank you for being part of our production, Jacqui. Jacqui Burnham I want to thank Alberta Theatre Projects for allowing me to be involved in this project, it is inspiring to educate and bring awareness to others on ASL and the Deaf community. If anyone is interested in ASL courses connect please contact: aslcoordinator@calgaryscope.org ABOUT ASL/ENGLISH INTERPRETERS STEPHANIE HOEBERS AND ANDREA SEREDA Andrea and Stephanie have over 33 combined years of interpreting experience and have been working in this specialized area of performing arts together since 2004. Though they arrived at their passion for interpreting theatre through very different paths, they each bring a unique but complimentary skill set to the process. It is through that mutual passion they have created a partnership to increase accessibility to performing arts in Calgary and together have interpreted a number of performances throughout the city from community theatre to professional theatre stages. They are thrilled to be able to provide access to an unprecedented nine shows for Calgary Deaf audiences this theatre season. Alberta Theatre Projects is hosting an ASL Interpreted Performance of Constellations on wednesday, March 7th. Director’s Note I admit it! I’m a hopeless romantic. As I get older, I become aware that my insides, my thoughts and how I perceive myself has not changed that radically since I was in my late 30’s. My awareness grows and expands, I aspire toward discernment as opposed to judgment, but when I catch myself in the mirror, I am often surprised by what I see. My outer shell is getting older. This duality is what connects me to this play. I am the baby of my family. I lost my parents while in my 30’s, and in the last 7 years I’ve lost 2 of my older brothers. Sometimes it feels like they were not real. Did I make them up? Dream them? Then a day comes where I’m walking in the woods and I get a whiff of cedar, and I hear laughter. I am flooded by the memory of my parents sitting on the front steps with the parent neighbours, the teens hanging out, and us little kids playing hide and seek under the massive cedar hedges on a hot Montreal night. In that moment they are a part of me and also part of another time, another world… Nick Payne wrote this play after his father’s death, during which he met his future wife! The worst and best experiences happening at the exact same time. how does one let go AND allow in at the same time? Often we can only see within our little bubble. we think the sun is at the centre of the universe because it’s the centre of what we can see. Payne invites us to imagine everything we’re NOT seeing. Inspired by science, this is a relationship play about moments when we make decisions, choices, consciously or unconsciously. It’s also about the fleeting nature of this biological existence, life. It’s about consequence, chance, relationship, and love! hugh Everett in the 1950’s suggests that, “ … for every situation where there is a probability of outcome A or outcome B, both paths are followed but in separate universes – the universe splits and leaves 2 universes that continue to exist but can’t communicate with one another.” what if, when someone dies, they still exist in another universe?… I miss you Michael. Thanks for teaching me how to dance. Valerie Planche
