A Note From Vanessa he first show I ever directed for ATP, and my first professional directing job, happened to be the inaugural Family Holiday Show: The Gifts of the Magi. I loved the music, the spectacle, the laughs, and the seasonal good vibes. It was theatre magic that transcended age. Maybe that’s why every year I have a soft spot for the Family Holiday Show, which has become a longstanding tradition. After all, what better way to open hearts and minds, as our company’s vision statement puts it, than to get families of all ages together and have a grand old time in the theatre?

T

This season, inspired by the theatre tradition of pantomime, we’ve asked some of Canada’s top talent, including Bruce Horak, Christian Goutsis, and the incomparable Rebecca Northan, to create a brand new theatrical experience – a light-hearted update of the Cinderella story, set right here in Calgary. You’ll get to boo the villain, cheer on the heroes, laugh along as we spoof current pop tunes, and join in the fun. I can’t wait for you to see what they have cooked up. Happy Holidays from all of us at ATP, and enjoy!

Creator’s Note ittle did I know when I first started doing adaptations of classic fairy tales at the Loose Moose Theatre Company back in the early 90s, that I would end up coming back around to Cinderella professionally. Those early days at Loose Moose taught me the fun of coming at a well-known story a little sideways, and above all else, the value of audience participation. There is no better way to bring a story to life, than asking the audience to play a part each night. I am also huge fan of theatre pieces that appeal to a family audience. To have a full spectrum of ages, all in one room, laughing and enjoying the same story – but for different reasons – feels like the height of theatrical success.

L

Slipper is also my Love Letter to Calgary. I did not know that I was a true "Prairie Girl", until I moved to Toronto. Calgary is so a part of my heart, that I have never been able to stay away for long. There really is a "feeling in the air, that you can't get anywhere". I feel very blessed by this opportunity to invite you, and your family, to join our ATP family, not only in celebration of the Holiday Season, but also in celebration of our community. Whether you are a brand new Calgarian, or someone who remembers Paskapoo, Benny the Bear, or It Figures... trust me when I say, it "makes no difference where I go, Calgary is the best home-town I know."
