A Note From Vanessa first saw Catalyst Theatre’s work 25 years ago, when I was a student in Edmonton. Their shows were like an art earthquake for us young theatre lovers. Images from those early productions linger to this day. They created such fantastical dream worlds. The design was eye-popping and spectacular, though often built out of found materials like netting, paper, and even oatmeal. Music and sound always played a major role, and the way they told the story was always surprising and unexpected.

All these years later, those original qualities remain, while the company has gone on to reach wider and wider audiences. Frankenstein was seen at Banff and Theatre Calgary in 2006, and then went to cities across Canada, from Vancouver to Toronto. In 2009, Nevermore, a musical about Edgar Allan Poe, began to tour Canada and the US for six years. It was one of two Canadian productions to play in the Barbican Theatre in London, and a rare original Canadian work to run Off-Broadway with its original creative team and cast. Last season’s Vigilante was a critical success and audience hit in Edmonton. Catalyst is truly one of Canada’s theatrical treasures. Jonathan Christenson, Catalyst Theatre’s Artistic Director, has this to say about the way he works:

I work hard to cultivate a creatively invigorating ecology that is defined by respect, fearlessness, trust, adaptability, faith, generosity and rigor, and I am committed to testing my limits, challenging my assumptions, and never standing still. What more could you ask for from a creator? I’m so pleased that we can invite such an outstanding company of Canadian theatre-makers to premiere their latest new work with us, as one of our Enbridge New Canadian Plays. A huge thank you to Enbridge, who for well over a decade has supported this kind of innovative theatrical risk-taking at ATP. I’m excited to see this work on our stage, before it goes on to Edmonton, and then a national tour. Welcome Catalyst! Enjoy.

Director’s Note

s I write this I'm preparing for my eleventh day in the rehearsal hall, working with the creative team, cast, crew and everyone in the offices at ATP and Catalyst to bring this brand new work to the stage. Creating a new show can feel a lot like trying to build an intricate sandcastle in the palm of my hands – just as it seems to be taking shape it starts to come spilling out between my fingers. It's a process that I love and dread in equal measure, because it asks me to stand in the unknown. Not a comfortable place for me – I like to know the answers – but I'm learning to embrace it as a necessary one. It's a place where my own doubts and fears can really thrive but it also calls for faith and courage in the face of those fears. Doubt and faith – you can't really have the latter without the former. That's what the process of creating Fortune Falls is all about right now.

As I reflect on this, I suppose all of us working on this new play are, at this moment, being asked to experience a little bit of what Everett Liddelman and the residents of Fortune Falls experience when everything they think they know is taken away from them. It's there, in the face of the unknown, that they are invited to discover a deeper and richer understanding of who they are. I'm so honoured to be on this journey with everyone at ATP, with my tremendously talented and generous creative team and with this brave and open-hearted cast. I hope you enjoy the little sandcastle we've been building for the past several weeks and that your memories of what you experience over the next couple of hours resonate in meaningful ways for you in the weeks and months ahead! Jonathan Christenson

A Note From ince 2003, Enbridge has proudly supported the development of new work through the Enbridge playRites Festival of New Canadian Plays, and we have watched it grow to become a springboard for Canadian artists– encouraging and inspiring them to create innovative theatre and original plays, many of which have gone on to national and international acclaim.

During this time we have also recognized the work of playwrights that are an integral part of Alberta Theatre Projects’ (ATP) artistic vision through the Enbridge Playwrights Awards. We are excited to continue our support of Enbridge New Canadian Plays; an incubator for the development of the best new work Canada has to offer, work that is destined to appear at ATP. At Enbridge, we help provide the energy that makes so much of life possible; the energy that heats the water in our homes, fuels the transportation that brought us here today, powers our economy, and keeps us connected. We understand that life takes energy, and we’re proud to bring it to you in many small but meaningful ways. The creative energy generated by Enbridge New Canadian Plays sets off a cultural chain reaction of new ideas, relationships and discussions that extend throughout our city, our province, our nation and around the world. We would like to recognize and honour the artistic energy that Alberta Theatre Projects has generated since playRites was founded in 1987. I hope you find this season’s Enbridge New Canadian Plays to be everything that good theatre can and should be – entertaining, engaging and thought provoking. Enjoy the show!
