t's nearly 100 degrees outside as I type this - but I'm not complaining. Nope, not me. All winter long I gripe and moan and act like the world is coming to an end because it's cold outside, so when the summer finally kicks in, I shut up and give my friends and family a respite from the 'woe is me' routine. No doubt they appreciate the break. Anyhow, the heat is on and that can only mean one thing - well, three things (in no particular order): Bands, Brews & BBQ! Coincidentally, we've got a whole section dedicated to the ultimate trifecta that should help steer you in the right direction - just keep your eyes on the road, ok? In other news, we've got exclusive interviews galore with the likes of hard rockers Saving Abel (Boogie Nights / July 9), comedian Lisa Lampanelli (Victory Theatre / July 23), country legend Ronnie Milsap (Victory Theatre / July 29) and celebrity tattoo artist Alli Baker (River City Tattoo Expo / July 8-10). ormed in Mississippi in 2004, Saving Abel took the rock world by storm when the first single off their self-titled debut hit the airwaves four years later. "Addicted" became one of those anthems that makes a career and catapults a band into the big leagues. Subsequent albums - 2010's Miss America and 2012's Bringing Down the Giant - produced more radio gold, including the latter's title track and the former's "Stupid Girl" and "The Sex is Good." But then came the big shake-up. In 2013, both singer Jared Weeks and drummer Michael McManus departed in rapid succession, leaving fans wondering about the future of Saving Abel. A year later, the band reemerged with a new frontman and a new album, Bloodstained Revolution. With Scotty Austin (formerly of Trash the Brand) taking over vocal duties and Steven Pulley behind the drum kit, a re-branded and re-energized Saving Abel hit the road for a staggering 300+ shows in a 12 month stretch. In the midst of another extended run of shows, the band arrives in Evansville for the River City Tattoo Expo on July 9 and will return to play the Ford Center on September 12 as part of the "Make America Rock Again Tour." Guitarist Scott Bartlett, who just recently incorporated his clothing business, kindly took the time to speak with News4U ahead of the expo. Considering that you're a tattoo fanatic and the fact that your clothing business involves putting your tattoo designs on shirts, etc., I'm assuming

this won't be the band's first expo gig. Absolutely not. Let's see, we did the "Ink Life Tour" we've done that one a few times. You know, we're a very patriotic band - which is actually not an act. I kind of get mad when people do it just for the sake of doing it. You know, we turned down a Motley Crue tour - an entire tour - to do two shows for the USO. Just because it's the right thing to do. We didn't want credit for it. And we all know that in the rock and roll industry, people don't usually do the right thing - they just do things for money. So what I did was, I made a shirt with Uncle Sam throwing the rock horns, and it just says, "We Want You to Rock!" And I'm about to get that - I'm going in reverse order - tattooed on my chest next month by Bob Tyrrell who is probably the most famous tattoo artist in the world right now. Will you be getting inked while you're here? We've got lots of talented local and national artists attending... Man, I may have to see if Bob wants to come down there - we'll see. I've got plenty of real estate on my body (laughs). I've got space. You know, I actually don't have that many tattoos, but the ones I do have are all large pieces. I've got one that says "SA" [Saving Abel]. When we re-branded about three years ago, the band went through a whole lot together, and we had to get close really fast. We had to, because we did 306 shows in one year. None of us are spring chickens - we've all kind of been around. It was just us and one road cont. on page 8

NEWS4U | UPCOMING EVENTS guy - six grown men traveling in a van doing all those shows. We just wanted to commemorate it with something, so we all got the "SA" logo tattooed. How does a band survive 300+ days on the road together? I think it's a lot of factors. The most important one being that we've all been in this long enough that we're just talented enough and lucky enough to get a second shot. The name is ours - it doesn't belong to a record label, it doesn't belong to anybody but ourselves and we've built it. I honestly think that having a couple of new guys join the band - even though they're not young - has really helped. Their outlook was like, 'I'm not taking no for an answer - we're not going to half-ass this thing.' That tenacity is what I think ultimately saved the band. With the band shake-up in 2013, what was the vibe heading into Bloodstained Revolution? You know, it's really unfortunate, because every record we've done since the first one has been forced. I mean, it was definitely refreshing to work with new blood, because as a writer, you've only got so many creative juices and you start to do the same thing over and over again. To have fresh blood and to work with my longtime friend [producer] Justin Rymer here in Memphis which is where I call home, that was cool. But we've always had people going, 'Come on, we need the next hit,' trying to fit the square into the circle. We had an incredible run with that first release but then we started getting pulled in a thousand directions, because everybody wants a piece of you. This last record, unfortunately, was made because we really needed something, because we had this new product, this new band we were selling. So we cut 10 songs in 11 days. What's crazy is that some of them are really good. But you get forced into putting out new music because of our instant gratification society. You almost have to play ball or go away. Has the band been working on new songs? Me and Scotty have one about rock and roll coming back - sort of like a party song with a lot of angst behind it. It's about how sometimes rock goes away for a while, but it will never die - it's called "Bringing Rock and Roll Back" - (sings) "It's a matter of fact / we're bringing rock and roll back." I'm really digging it - we talk about all the iconic cities and how rock and roll has evolved over the years, how youthful rebellion can be a great thing. So, we're about to cut that track in Memphis. The "Make America Rock Again Tour" brings together a bunch of great bands - Drowning Pool, Tantric, Trapt and many more, including you guys, of course. Whose brilliant idea was this? I don't know who came up with it, but I know that it's really, really funny that we wrote that "Bringing Rock and Roll Back" song that I just told you about eight months ago - well before the "Make America Rock Again Tour" was branded. And then on top of that, I have a shirt with freaking Uncle Sam throwing rock horns (laughs). So, I just think it's the year for us - we've endured so much and all of a sudden it's like the clouds are parting and this is the moment - the trifecta of musical bliss. Rest assured this is going to be a party kind of tour. I almost feel like it's "Make America Rock Again" and then every city is going to have to rebuild (laughs). All we want to do is make music and then go party with the fans. The irreverent insult comic takes down Megan Fox and Jerry Seinfeld, talks Stuffed and more
A
ffectionately known as the "Queen of Mean," Lisa Lampanelli is, in reality, one of the nicest people you could hope to meet. But when she's on stage, take cover. The newly-trim east coast native spares no one - and that's what's made her brand of insult comedy such a breath of fresh air for so many years. Lampanelli unapologetically - and hilariously - takes aim at all the stereotypes of ethnicity, race, religion and more, exploiting the ridiculousness of societal views. With numerous legendary appearances on Comedy Central Roasts as well as five stand-up specials and a highly entertaining run on season five of Celebrity Apprentice, she has created an incredibly diverse fan base that covers all demographics. On the heavy side throughout her career, Lampanelli recently lost 100 pounds by way of stomach surgery and has written a new four-character play, Stuffed, that details the many issues that people face in our body-conscious world. The show premiers in New York city in September. For a long time, it seemed like female comics weren't taken very seriously, but you've always had a great following. Well, I think that men are finally starting to realize that women really are funny. And I'm lucky that the straight male fan base has always liked me, because I'm sort of like a male comic. I do quick punch lines, and I don't tell a lot of stories. I just kind of have a quick, insulting point of view, and I think straight guys like that. Luckily, it sort of has universal appeal, but I think there used to be this thing that women weren't funny and all that. But thanks to Amy Schumer and Whitney Cummings - and a lot of others who have made it big - it's become ok to laugh at women.
Once straight guys start buying tickets, then you've made it. I mean, I don't know any guy who doesn't like to watch Melissa McCarthy - she's the funniest chick in the world. I'd rather watch her for two hours than watch Megan Fox do whatever it is she does - which I haven't figured out. Your brand of insult comedy seems especially relevant right now considering the thin-skinned nature of society - even Jerry Seinfeld has stopped performing at colleges due to students being overly sensitive to material with so much as a hint of edginess. Well, I don't know how you want to spell this, but I want you to put in 'waaaaaahhh.' Now he knows what I've been dealing with since I started my career. He can go cry on a bag of money. I mean, I get it, but it's like, 'You big baby.' Myself, Louis CK, Jim Norton, Dave Attell - we've always had that whether we used to play those places or not. But now because Seinfeld bitches about it, it gets press. We could have said how hard it was and no one ever would have cared. You know what, Jerry? I feel so sorry for you. Oh my gosh, I don't know how he's going to survive (laughs). We'll have to do a fundraiser for him because that solid gold BMW is not going to pay for itself. At least now he understands that being an edgy comic is not as easy as it looks. Have you put much thought into why people enjoy being insulted - by you, at least? I don't know. I asked a bunch of gays guys once why they liked my insult comedy, and they just said, 'We just like mean women.' You know, most people who have a sense of humor about themselves can take a joke when they know it's just a joke and it comes from the right source. When I do cont. on page 12

NEWS4U | UPCOMING EVENTS it, when [comedian] Don Rickles or a handful of others do it, people know in their hearts that we love everybody. So people don't mind it. It's like when you're with your best friend and you joke with each other. But the second that somebody messes with your best friend, you're not putting up with it, because you know they meant it. It's all such an interesting thing. Luckily, we get away with it - we're innocent in what we're saying, so it all works out. How long have you been kicking around the idea for Stuffed? Well, about six years ago I started writing a one-woman show with Alan Zweibel who was one of the original Saturday Night Live writers - and he also wrote Billy Crystal's play with him, Seven Hundred Sundays. That played on Broadway for awhile and I met Alan and we decided to do a one-person show about my struggles with food and relationships, etc., because it's all related. So after writing that for about three years, it just didn't seem to say enough universally about the struggles of people other than myself - it felt very selfcentered. So, I turned it into a four-person play instead. It clearly was the right thing to do because it just took off and now it's premiering in the fall in New York City. I can't believe it - it's like a dream come true. Is it directed primarily towards women or will guys enjoy it, too? It's funny because my brother is a very butch guy - he works for ESPN - he's a real guy's-guy. He's got six kids and coaches baseball. I invited them to a benefit performance of it, and I got a standing ovation. The audience had a ton of guys in it and they stood up. My brother emailed me the next day and he said, 'My daughter - your niece, Eve - said that every girl and woman should see this.' And my brother goes, 'I disagree. I think every person should see it, because men can relate to it, too.' Weight issues are a boy-girl, woman-man thing. What are you hoping to achieve with Stuffed - and do you have plans to do more writing? It's the first of four plays I'm writing. The other three are about the same four women and relationships. Then the same four women and anger and finally, the same four women and grief. It's probably going to take me 10 or 15 years, because it's a long process. I really want to make a statement about some issues that are kind of important. But the goal is to have as many people as possible see it - take it on the road to different cities, to colleges, even high schools. It has very little cursing in it but just enough that we could take it out for a high school play. I would just love for everybody to go, 'Oh my god, I understand what that person is going through.' Because there are a lot of good-hearted people out there who get crapped on for the wrong reasons. If you're going to crap on them, do it for a better reason than that they're too fat or too thin. T
he term "legend" gets tossed around a lot in the entertainment business, but in the case of Ronnie Milsap, it hardly seems like a big enough word. With 40 number one hits to his credit, the North Carolina native sits just behind George Strait and Conway Twitty in the pantheon of country music chart-toppers - some awfully good company to keep. His incredible streak began in 1974 and carried on for nearly two decades thanks to such classics as "It Was Almost Like a Song," "Smoky Mountain Rain," "(There's) No Gettin' Over Me," "I Wouldn't Have Missed It for the World" and "Any Day Now." What's more, Milsap remains one of the very few country artists to achieve cross-over success, having scored several hits on both the pop and adult contemporary charts as well.
you but that you didn't record for whatever reason? You know, when I won Entertainer of the Year in 1976, my wife Joyce and I were talking about how people were saying that I was an overnight sensation - but it's been a long night (laughs). And while I was talking to her, a guy brought a song down to my producer Tom Collins and said he wrote it for me and my wife. But Tom never got the song to me - instead, Joe Cocker cut it: "You are So Beautiful." I would have loved to have cut that. The guy wrote it knowing that while I can't see my wife, I know she's beautiful, because I feel it in my heart and soul - (sings) "You're everything I hope for / You're everything I need." That's at the top of my list of missed opportunities.
Blind since childhood, Milsap has never let his disability get in the way; rather, he has followed in the footsteps of his idol, Ray Charles, putting all his feelings and emotions into the music. To this day - nearly five decades on - he continues to sing straight from the heart. A legend, indeed.
Have you been surprised by certain songs that became hits? Well, you just never know where a great hit song is going to come from. For instance, "Almost Like a Song" was written for me by Archie Jordan in 1976. I had a cassette of it out on the road with me, and I was playing it quite a bit. My wife kept saying, 'Don't tell me you're listening to that again.' Because as a singer he wasn't that strong, but the melody was cool and I knew it could be great. After the touring season, I got home and was playing it on the piano in the living room, and she walked in and said, 'What in the world is that?' I said, 'That's that song you hated all year (laughs).' I told her what I'd done to it - worked up a modulation to get me to where the last note hit was that high A flat. I also came up with that signature piano thing at the very end which is the same thing at the front. You can play just a little bit of that and people automatically know what song it is. Just like you can play a little bit of "Smoky Mountain Rain" and people know what it is right away.
You're best known for singing heartfelt ballads, but a lot of your material has some real R&B swagger, like 1983's "Stranger in My House." It's still in there - it's part of what I do. In fact, I'm working on a new album right now. It's a duets album. We did some good work this week in the studio - finally got some rough mixes down that we can all enjoy. Luke Bryan is going to sing with me on "Stranger in My House" and Jason Aldean is going to help me out on "Prisoner of the Highway." And we're also looking at Casey Musgraves singing with me on "Don't You Ever Get Tired of Hurting Me?" One of the new songs, written by Mike Reid, is called "A Woman's Love." We're going to send it to Willie Nelson for him to play and sing on it. It's going to be great. You've worked with a lot of great songwriters throughout your career. Can you recall any missed opportunities - songs that were offered to

NEWS4U | UPCOMING EVENTS And they [the school] said, 'No, no, no, we want you to be something a whole lot better than a professional musician.' So, I left and went to a Ray Charles concert in Atlanta - this pilot got me in and I was backstage. I was sitting in the dressing room playing Ray's piano and he walks in. I said, 'Ray, you are the high priest - I've got all your records and they're just incredible. I want to be a professional musician like you.' He said, 'Well, play me something.' So I played him a couple songs I was working on, and he said, 'You just love it, don't you?' And I said, 'I do - every day I soak it up.' He said, 'Son, what you need to do is get in the middle of it and become a professional musician.' So, I went back to Raleigh and told everyone that Ray Charles said it was ok for me to become a professional musician - they didn't like that (laughs). But eventually I worked my way to Nashville and suddenly I got permission to play these big, high profile corporate shows with Ray Charles and myself. You can't beat it. He was the one who proved it could be done - he was a trailblazer.
What do you think it is that people hear in your voice - that your fans continue to latch onto? You know, we've lost so many of our good country singers - George Jones is gone, Merle Haggard is gone. It's really sad for people who love country like I do. The main thing that I think people hear in my voice - or anything I've been associated with - is believability. That's what people immediately know - when they hear it, they sense it. They know it's real. A lot of times it's like pieces of my life in the songs. Finalist on season two of Oxygen's Best Ink to be a featured guest at the River City Tattoo Expo
A
self-taught artist from Austin, TX, Alli Baker never really gave a career in the tattoo industry much thought until friends suggested that her style might be best suited for it. With their encouragement, she marched into a local shop on the day she turned 18, portfolio in hand - and was hired on the spot. As an apprentice, her eyes were opened to a whole new world of art that would eventually land her on a high profile reality TV competition. Oxygen's Best Ink ran from 2012-2014 and featured some of the country's most talented tattoo artists vying for a $100,000 prize as well as the cover article for an issue of Tattoo Magazine. For the show's second season, Baker was chosen to battle it out with 11 other artists, faced with a series of increasingly difficult challenges and elimination rounds. Despite the intense competition, she made it all the way to the final four, but more importantly, really made a name for herself. Baker even got that cover article after all when Tattoo Magazine put her front and center for the March 2014 edition. She currently runs her own studio from her home base in Austin and travels the world on a tattoo tour. Baker is scheduled to appear at the River City Tattoo Expo at Tropicana Evansville July 8-10. She kindly spoke with News4U ahead of the event. What made you decide to apply for a spot on Best Ink? I met the Best Ink people while working at an expo in Miami. When approached with the idea of being on TV I was a little apprehensive, and declined the offer. Then a week later they came to my hometown, and after some reflection I thought it could be fun, and the publicity would help further my career. The application process was fairly easy, just timeconsuming. I suppose I was chosen for the show for my artistic style, as well as the fact that I take my career very seriously and always strive to do my best. The show seemed to be a bit of an emotional rollercoaster for you - you even stated at one point that you were "not myself" during the filming. Looking back, what's your take on your experience?

I don't think anyone can expect the kind of stress that comes with filming a television show. Long days and little sleep. Every day was unpredictable, but the most stressful thing was the short amount of time we'd be given to complete the art. Stress was high, but it was exciting to see all the artwork completed with everyone's own unique twist. I doubt I'd do another competition show, but I think another type of show might fit right. When you attend an expo - like the River City Tattoo Expo here in Evansville, IN - what's your approach or mindset? The River City Expo will definitely bring some excitement to the city and the tattooing community in Indiana. Expos are a very different environment from a standard tattoo shop and are always a lot of fun. I love meeting people that are enthusiastic about tattoos and art whenever I'm on the road. I'm hoping people find it just as exciting as I do and that this can be the beginning of an annual show in Evansville. More and more tattoo shops are popping up in our area. And while there are a few female artists, it's still a very male-driven industry around here. What would you say to women in our neck of the woods who might be considering getting into the tattoo business? Being a woman in the tattoo industry is a little different than it is in other fields. It can be difficult to break through, but it's definitely not impossible. More and more female artists are finally being recognized as equals. The best advice I can give is to not let your gender identify you as an artist; focus on the craft, and let your work speak for itself. My goal is to be recognized as the hard-working, successful artist that I strive to be, and not to be seen simply as a woman in what's often perceived as a man's industry. fter spending a little over four years hidden away in a junkyard, an iconic Evansville figure is being brought back to life. In 1974, Mesker Park Zoo commissioned four local artists to build a larger than life Santa Claus for the Enchanted World Christmas display at the Old Courthouse. The statue stood at a towering 34 feet and weighed over 2,500 pounds. After the event, Santa was moved to Busler’s truck stop near the intersection of Highway 41 and Interstate 64. It quickly became a beloved welcome home sign for those returning to the city. However, when the truck stop was demolished in 2011, Santa was hauled off to a junkyard with the rest of the remaining rubble from the building. As the years went by, memories began to fade for some, until one day when Evansville native Ron McKeethen stumbled across an almost unrecognizable Santa. He instantly noticed the extensive damage that had occurred over the years, which included a large gash that spanned from his back to his belly. For McKeethen, who remembers constantly seeing the iconic figure throughout his childhood, the sight of Santa in such disrepair spurred him into action. After discovering the damage in early January of this year, he made it his goal to restore Santa for everyone to enjoy. McKeethen started the Facebook page “Stand Santa Back Up” and was pleasantly surprised to see it bring in over 8,000 likes in the past six months, helping the campaign garner immense community support. McKeethen has worked closely with local sculptor Bob Zasadny to repair the damages to Santa’s body. While the large gash in his back has been

fixed, Santa still needs fresh coats of paint as well as repairs to his feet and legs. But despite the multiple issues that still need to be addressed, McKeethen hopes that Santa will be completely restored by August. In an effort to reach that goal and get more members of the Evansville community involved in the campaign, barbeque fundraisers have been held and signs with sayings such as “We Believe” have been created and sold through the Facebook page. Every little bit of financial support brings McKeethen's dream that much closer to reality. "I want my grandkids to see the Santa," he says. The iconic image of Santa waving to those that entered and left Evansville was a fond memory for a lot of people, and it's because of those fond memories that Santa eventually made it out of that junkyard and is back on track to being a cherished memory of the past for some and a new favorite memory for others. - Caitlin Blackford

he 2016 edition of the Vanderburgh County Fair marks the 96th running of the event, a truly remarkable fact that should make our community very proud. Year after year, thousands and thousands of people from all over the area gather to experience six days of familyfriendly fun - everything from Dog Shows and Tractor Pulls to Talent Contests and Pageants plus Carnival Rides for the kids. Best of all, there's always a much-anticipated mid-week concert that draws a huge crowd. In fact, this year's featured performer is country star Dustin Lynch who has scored big on the charts with songs like "She Cranks My Tractor" and "Where It's At (Yep, Yep)." He was actually scheduled to play last year but got the call to support Luke Bryan on tour - a golden opportunity. Now he's back to make good on his promise to rock the fair! In addition to all the entertainment on tap, there will be plenty of food booths serving all manner of delicious treats and entrees, from funnel cakes and lemonade shake-ups to bratwurst and rib-eye sandwiches. stablished in 1995 as a not-for-profit regional ballet school and performing arts company, the
CCDE's mission is to "introduce the children of the tristate area to the experience of dance through outreach performances, professional dance exposure and scholarships to the school. It is founded on the belief that all children regardless of race, creed or economic status should have the opportunity to dance expressively which fosters self expression, healthy body confidence and self-discipline." Class options include Pre-Ballet, Ballet I, Ballet II, Ballet III, Pre-Company, Company, Beginning Tumbling and Intermediate Tumbling. Class placement is based on skill achievement and is at the discretion of the Artistic Director. The River Basin Blues Society (RBBS) is partnering with Vanderburgh County Special Olympics to present the inaugural Burdette Blues Fest, a virtual who's who of all star local and regional musical talent. It all gets started at 2 p.m. with the incomparable Dale Niehaus and Bad Mojo featuring Leland Isbill. Leland is a Special Olympian who has dazzled the blues world playing in Memphis and at Morgan Freeman's Ground Zero in Clarksdale, MS. Then at 3:30 p.m. Blues 4 U takes the stage, the only group to play all 26 years of the WC Handy Blues & BBQ Festival. At 5:30 p.m., Honey Roy will bring the funk, featuring the dynamic father/ son duo of Micah and Roy Carter backed by one of the area's tightest rhythm sections. As the sun goes down, things will heat up with ZOGO, led by award winning guitarist, Alonzo Pennington and the legendary Michael Gough on bass. Finally, crowd favorite Two-Tone Express is scheduled to bust out some Chicagostyle blues starting at 9:30 p.m., closing out the festival. An Evansville tradition quite unlike any other, Volksfest is all about reminding us where we came from. This annual celebration of the city's German heritage draws thousands of people for three days of beer, brats and polka music. The prices are cheap and the party atmosphere is unmatched - and it's all put together on a volunteer basis by the good people at Germania Maennerchor, a social club dedicated to preserving Evansville's history. Countless hours of hard work go into the event which features GM's famous kraut balls - lots and lots of kraut balls. In fact, the actual number is somewhere around 15,000 - plus 1400 pounds of bratwurst, 1000 pounds of pig knuckles, 950 gallons of German potato salad, 480 gallons of sauerkraut and 400 gallons of beans. Volksfest doesn't skimp on the entertainment, either. This year, you can polka the night away to sets by the Ratskeller Band, Rhein Valley Brass and Cincinnati Schnapps. And for the kids, there's the first annual Brat Trot 5K at 8 a.m. on Saturday as well as special entertainment at 11 a.m. So break out your lederhosens and bring your family and friends to the one of summer's biggest parties! o you’re ready to try your first premium cigar. But a trip to Cigar! Cigar! can be overwhelming with over 1,200 to choose from. This column is going to give you the basics so you can enjoy your smoke like a seasoned cigar smoker.
Cigars range in flavor, strength, size and shape. It’s best to stick to a mild cigar to start, something like a Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real. These come in sizes that can smoke for 30 minutes to 90 minutes or longer.
Cutting and Lighting the Cigar: Premium cigars will always require the removal of a ‘cap’ of tobacco from the top or ‘head’ of the cigar. There are multiple ways to remove the cap. The most common method is a flat cut by a scissor or guillotine cigar cutter. Other cutters come with an angled blade called a V-Cut or Cat’s Eye cutter that gives an easier draw through the cigar. Then there’s the Punch that removes a circular plug, which gives a tighter draw. Once you’ve got the cigar cut it's time to light up the other end, which is called the ‘foot’. Use a butane torch lighter, wooden matches or thin strips of cedar wood called ‘spills’. Roll the foot over the top of the flame while puffing through the head until the entire foot is lit. While smoking, puff the smoke into your mouth but don’t inhale. Smoke slow and steady; smoking too fast will result in a bitter and harsh taste that no one will enjoy. Sit back and relax with a nice beverage and enjoy life and your cigar. Let the ash build up, don’t knock it off like a cigarette ash. ary Poppins is set to fly over the rooftops of London and onto the stage of Owensboro's RiverPark Center when Back Alley Musicals brings the classic story to life. The beloved musical theatre group is pulling out all the stops to make this show their most elaborate ever with the help of a professional rigging company to “fly” Mary and have Bert walk and dance up the stage proscenium. A large cast of singers and dancers and a live orchestra will tell the story of Mary Poppins, the practically perfect nanny who helps us learn to take our medicine with a spoonful of sugar, find the silver lining in every situation, and realize that sometimes we should just use the winds of change to go fly a kite. Mary brings order to the Banks household, takes children Jane and Michael out on magical adventures, and dispenses sage advice, such as, "anything can happen if you let it.” Hadley Rouse, a Western Kentucky University music student and a veteran of BAM productions who is Mary Poppins, says, “The show has universal appeal. There is something for everyone in this famous classic. Small children will love the lively dance numbers and amazing lighting and special effects. What it means to be a
family and the need to balance work and home is a heartwarming story for the entire family.” For Mary (Hadley) and her friend Bert (Will Stone), being in the air above the stage will be a new experience. They become fast friends of the Banks children, played by Luke Reddy and Elizabeth Strobel. This family musical features the delightful songs from the cherished Disney film, including “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” and “Step in Time.” Winner of 44 major theatre awards from around the globe, Mary Poppins has captivated audiences for generations with its enchanting story, unforgettable songs and dazzling dance numbers. JOSH ARNOLD Owensboro multi-instrumentalist splitting time between solo acoustic gigs, prog rock band performances and other musical pursuits
C
ountry may be king in Kentucky, but 28-yearold Josh Arnold has always been more drawn to the folk leanings of Bob Dylan and Crosby, Stills & Nash and the psychedelic sounds of the late Pink Floyd frontman, Syd Barrett. But really, it all started with his biggest love, the Beatles. The timeless melodies of the Liverpool legends were music to his young ears, inspiring Arnold to pick up the guitar at the age of 13 and start taking lessons. In time, another '60s icon caught his attention in a major way: Donovan. The Scottish pop singer known for such hits as "Sunshine Superman" and "Mellow Yellow" had a profound effect on both his playing and singing style. Most recently, Arnold discovered the music of Harry Nilsson, another amazing talent who left us too soon. Put all of these incredible artists in a blender and you start to get a sense of where the Owensboro native is coming from and where he's going.

But perhaps the most surprising influence on Arnold's musical journey isn't musical at all. "Strangely enough, Stephen King has made a big impact on my original
songwriting," he says, while clarifying that his lyrics are not horrorbased in any way. No, there's nothing scary about Arnold's music - quite the opposite. Ever since he started performing publicly in 2008 at local coffee houses, he's won fans all over Owensboro with his smooth, comforting vocal delivery and set lists that reflect his interest in peace and love era artists. Eventually, Arnold graduated to restaurants which presented a real challenge in terms of holding the audience's attention. "People always enjoyed it, but they're eating and music isn't the focal point," he explains. "But whether people were paying attention or not, I just enjoyed playing any chance I got." Arnold's ability to adapt to any environment may well be genetic. While his parents and siblings aren't musical at all, his grandfather was a guitarist who played with both John Prine and Jimmy Buffett back in the day. "I got to jam with him a few times before he passed away," Arnold recalls. "It was always a lot of fun, and he turned me on to bands like Creedence Clearwater Revival." On a typical night in 2009, Arnold happened to be hanging out at Milligan's Bar, watching a couple area bands perform. One was a cover band, but the other really caught his ear with a prog rock sound not often heard in the south. After the show, two of the members approached him. "They said they were familiar with me, and I was flattered," he says. "They asked if I wanted to come and jam with them sometime and thank goodness I did, because

Specifically, the partnership turned into White Knight, a band built on complex song structures similar to such giants of the genre as King Crimson and Yes. The group's dynamic is such that Arnold plays synthesizer and keyboards rather than his trusty acoustic guitar and in fact, he first joined in on bass. With the rest of the guys being from Louisville, most gigs have been scheduled there and in the Lexington area at places like Al's Bar and Cosmic Charlie's. The latter is where White Knight recently recorded a brand new live EP featuring four striking original compositions plus a cover of "Halleluwah" by legendary krautrockers, Can. An excellent representation of the band's multi-layered, multifaceted sound, Faces and Names picks up where 2012's fulllength release, Astronomica, left off, mining the rich musical terrain of those groundbreaking English groups they so admire. Both efforts are available on Bandcamp as name-your-price downloads ("We just want people to hear them - that's the main thing"). Come August, Arnold and the rest of White Knight will hit the road for a six date regional mini-tour, including a stop in Evansville. In the meantime, you can catch them in their home base of Louisville at Third Street Dive on July 9 and at the Mag Bar on July 28. You'd think that between Arnold's solo shows and his White Knight adventures, he'd be all played out. Not a chance. "I don't have any other job, so I try to keep myself as busy as I can with music," he says. "I'm not going to get rich doing it, but it sure is a lot of fun." To that end, Arnold is also having a blast playing with Hereward the Wake, a Grateful Dead-esque outfit that performs both covers and original material. In addition, you can find him behind the piano every Wednesday night, accompanying the house band at the 3 Monkeys 4th St. Pub. Whew. WITH BILLY EGELER Holy smokes! The racing season is flying by faster than a go kart at Rockport Raceway After a very wet start to the racing schedule, we are clicking laps off and rolling on. It appears that our local tracks have been maintaining a decent car count and crowd for the most part. There are a couple of exceptions, unfortunately. Â Recently, Route 45 Raceway in Flora, IL announced that they have shut the gates for racing. The track there has had the best racing surface they have ever had, yet the support from drivers and fans wasn't there. The track made the change from UMP to USRA over the winter which many think was the biggest issue. I understand what they were trying to do. They were trying to help save the racers money, however, with no other tracks in the area willing to jump ship and switch sanctions, it just didn't work. I commend them for their efforts. I had the opportunity to visit Rockport Raceway a couple of weeks ago.

It was the first time in several years I had been to check out the area go kart racers due to my schedule. I must say, WOW, what a difference! The Wettstein family is busting their tail over there and have provided an awesome racing surface for the racers. This is a great family-friendly facility and VERY affordable entertainment! There are not many places where you can see people from the age range of 4 to 60 competing and loving every minute of it! Kentucky Motor Speedway was dealt what arguably could be one of the wettest starts in recent history. Before the track was able to kick things off, they were flooded out at least three times causing them
NEWS4U | SPORTS to push back opening night several times. Brad and Anita along with family, friends, racers and even groups of total strangers put in countless hours cleaning up and repairing damage caused by the floods to finally kick the season off. The first pair of races are now in the books and have been extremely successful! This is the track's 55th anniversary, so you should make plans to go out and visit the only asphalt track running a regular schedule in the state of Kentucky. The drag strip at Chandler (Greater Evansville Dragway) got their season rolling in June after sitting idle for a bit. Reports have been nothing but positive. A great car count and crowd were on hand for opening night, too. Everything at the facility has been updated and it's great to have those gates open again!

Cedar Ridge Speedway in Morgantown, KY continues to see great car counts and crowds as their season rolls on. Richard, Angie and the crew are putting forth the effort to give folks a nice surface that produces great racing! Windy Hollow Speedway in Owensboro has three races in the books after getting a late start. As always, the fans fill the stands and the racers continue to come to the track that has a following like few others in the area. As I bring this month's Around the Track to a close, I want to bring up something that really bugs me. As racers, we always complain about how difficult it is to get sponsorship yet when we do get a business to help, many take the money, put a name on the car and that's it. We also complain about the payouts at local tracks yet don't support the tracks even when they have high paying events. Teams need to take a close look at this. Your sponsors are paying you to promote their products or services... It is YOUR responsibility to do this! If you don't promote them, the chances of them remaining in our sport is slim! Same for the tracks, if they are offering good payouts for YOU to race and you don't support them, chances are the money will dry up! he owner of Evansville's new hockey team, the Thunderbolts, Mike Hall is your ordinary, down to earth guy who just wants to bring the joy of hockey back to Evansville. During his professional career, he has owned successful businesses in the professional staffing and engineering consulting industries, earning multiple patents for his engineering designs. Mike is also highly regarded and sought after as a business solution consultant. He was a three-sport varsity athlete at North Posey High School in Poseyville, IN, winning the “Elks Athlete of the Year” his senior year. Mike continued his athletic career at the University of Evansville where he played football. He has also raced Unlimited Hydroplanes for the past 28 years. The Unlimited class boats he is involved with hold every major speed record for reciprocating engine powered boats. Close-knit band of friends creating atmospheric rush of lush vocals and reverb-drenched distortion Photo by: Casey Noonan
A
s anyone who grew up in the late ‘80s/early ‘90s can attest, there were myriad movies, books, and TV shows featuring bands formed by friends: The Lone Gunmen of Airheads, Wyld Stallyns of Bill & Ted, The Geeks from that one Goosebumps book, Doug & Skeeter on, well, Doug, the band that the younger titular brother formed on The Adventures of Pete & Pete... the list goes on and on. Just like that heyday of coming-of-age entertainment drenched in flannel and torn denim, Stella is a band formed of lifelong friends. Unlike their entertainment counterparts, though, they’ve been lucky enough to last for more than 3090 minutes at a time. Five years, in fact. Or is it four?
they draw their influences from. (Drummer Ross Elliott was unfortunately unable to make it.) I’ve spent a fair amount of time listening to their sophomore full-length album Skin and Seeds on their aforementioned Bandcamp page. They pull from a large amount of influences of two and three decades ago, marrying the brooding post-punk of the mid-‘80s with elements of shoegaze from the late ‘80s/early ‘90s (coincidentally, the same era as the teenage pop culture icons mentioned earlier). It’s New Order and Cocteau Twins meets My Bloody Valentine, with some Slowdive, Boris, and Hum thrown in for good measure.
“We formed in 2011. Wait, was it 2011 or 2012?” “No, it was 2012.” “Maybe it was late 2011/early 2012.” “Well, we have to go with 2011, because that’s what it says on our Bandcamp!”
The band agree with my take on their music. However, there is one other band they unexpectedly get compared to. “A lot of people tell me we sound like Joy Division,” Kenny tells me. I’m sitting with three of the four members of local shoegaze/indie band Stella - Kenny “Sure, they’re one of the most influential bands of the last half-century, so DeMoss (guitar/vocals), Kyle Dossett (bass), and James Wallwork (guitar) - obviously a lot of bands and artists have been influenced some by it. NEWS4U | LOCAL/REGIONAL MUSIC The band started when Ross told Kenny he wanted to learn how to play drums. “I’d just bought a Boss ME-50 [a guitar multi-effects processor ], so we started playing together,” Kenny recalls. After being forced to switch practice spots a few times - “We got the cops called on us almost every day,” jokes Kenny - they finally ended up at Kyle’s house, who had joined the band by then. “It was definitely 2011, because it was my freshman year of college!” Kyle interjects, finally settling the question of when they were formed. James was called in for second guitar duties shortly thereafter. Kenny and Ross played in the school band in middle school, and Kyle played bass in the jazz band. Naturally, all three initially took a much more traditional route to learning music. “I was that guy with all the instructional videos and books, learning theory and all the chords,” Kenny laughs. “But James was the guy who spent more time learning his own way. He'd be in his room tuning his guitar differently until he liked it. With him, it was just whatever sounded good and not whether it worked from a theory standpoint or not.” That dichotomy of order vs. chaos plays no small part in Stella's music. Kenny provides the chord structure and vocal melodies while James fills the space with atmospheric textures, ambient soundscapes, and ominous washes of reverb-drenched distortion. The rhythm section of Kyle and Ross anchor the low-end in just the right way, that perfect combination of perfectly cementing the beat as needed but also keeping it interesting. So what's next for the band? “We’ve started writing some new material. We've got two songs so far that we've been trying out live.” James suddenly jumps in. “Oh, and a synth player!” “Oh yeah, I just got a new synth, and we're thinking about recruiting a full-time synth player.” And just like the sitcoms of 20-30 years ago, it looks like the cast may be taking on a new addition as a new storyline begins. - Jonathan Gluff Follow Stella on Facebook and visit stellaart.bandcamp.com.

The new flower children: Newburgh-based indie rockers get in touch with their inner hippies
“If I could say one thing that influences our band more than anything, I’d say love.” That’s what Selling the WAR! vocalist and rhythm guitarist Ben Jenkins says when I ask him what some of his and his band’s biggest influences are. And that is a theme that’s consistent throughout our conversation. We’re sitting in the band’s van outside of a pizza place on Evansville’s east side. I ask why the parking lot is so full on a Tuesday night; Ben informs me, “It’s ‘Family Movie Night.’” I agree that we’re probably better off out here. After all, screaming and/ or crying children aren’t exactly conducive to conversations between old friends, let alone an interview with someone you’ve never met before. (I later find out the movie of the night was Toy Story 3, immediately regretting doing the interview in the van and not inside.) The door to the van slides open and we’re now joined by two more members of the band, bassist Garret Wene and lead guitarist Grayson Gerni drummer Taylor Harmon just recently came on board and was not an official member yet. We all exchange pleasantries and introductions. The topic of the new Radiohead album (which was just released a week before at the time of this interview - Anachronism Ed.) is breached, and Garret and I discuss the ups and downs of it while Ben and Grayson talk about the new Fender Stratocaster that Ben is picking up at the end of the week. In anticipation of our meeting, I have spent the last two days listening to the 4-song EP the band has up on their Bandcamp page. It’s something best described as a unique revision of early/mid-’90s alternative: Their song “Something to Believe In” recalls the loose strumming pattern of “Mouth Full of Cavities” by Blind Melon without being derivative, while the impassioned vocals in the chorus of “Bleached White Lies” recalls some of Eddie Vedder’s more plaintive performances. But it’s no mere mimicry - they’re simply distilling the sounds of the more introspective bands of that era through a generation thankfully less disenfranchised than the then-nascent Gen-Xer’s of that previous decade.

In other words, it’s a little less “brooding Seattle angst” and a lot more “cheery Midwestern optimism.” That motif extends beyond the music, since lyrically speaking, they’re much more likely to be labeled “hippies” than “hipsters.” You can’t argue that when Ben sings “No matter how life throws me around/I’m not gonna lose this smile on my face” in their song “Something to Believe In” it almost brings to mind a group of flower children on a California beach, soaking up the sun and catching some waves during the Summer of Love. Ben further backs this up when he says, “To me, music and love are one and the same at this point for me… Love is the goal, and music is the journey.” No one in the band really seems to have a problem with this comparison; in fact, shouting out, “The hippies were right!” becomes somewhat of a recurring joke throughout our conversation, a sort of “instant meme” that seemed to only exist in the moment. All four of us say it at some point throughout the interview, sometimes halfsarcastically, sometimes with a touch of levity. During one of those latter moments of semiseriousness, Ben adopts a more somber tone: “When I look at the problems in the world, one of the biggest ones I keep seeing is loneliness, especially in our country. Obviously, I’m certainly not trying to say homelessness and poverty aren’t bigger issues, because they undoubtedly are. But loneliness can compound - or even cause - those two things; it often even spurs violence. So how do you cure loneliness?” he asks. But it’s more of a rhetorical question, because I already know what his answer will be: “Love.” Needless to say, Grayson, Garret, and myself don’t miss a beat in yelling, “The hippies were right!”, reviving the joke yet again. We all four share some good-natured ribbing at Ben’s expense, but I know he means it. And watching them interact together, I know that Garret and Grayson mean it, too. They’re behind their frontman 100%. ithin a week, it was praised as an instant pop classic. It topped all the charts and stunned critics with what they were calling bold phrasing and a raveling time signature. One critic from the New York Times Sunday Review referred to it as galvanized cattle descending a staircase in near perfect 3/3 time. It was a cacophony of treble and bass, like being swaddled in angora sweaters and laid to rest in a sea of lavender and wild grass. The result was a sky-rocketing suicide rate and an incalculable number of think pieces discussing the vulnerability of America's youth while also protecting the artistry and self-expression of such a masterful work.
Life is Strange by Odie Fox
We live through the same set of days every year, completely and blissfully unaware of the potential importance each day holds. Our average day has limitless possibilities, but at the current moment they’re dull. Future anniversaries, birthday celebrations, and other milestones that we will one day hold so dear in our hearts are, at first, all the same day. Sunrise, sunset, another day. We live through these days as if they were nothing, but one day they will be something. It’s kind of sweet, really. If you’re having a bad day, you can imagine how much will change within a year and this bad day could end up being the best day of your life. It’s sweet, if you have a positive outlook. On the flip side, if your mind tends toward darker thoughts, we also live through our death day every year. Which is not as charming. While no one wants to sit and think about how they could be dead this time next year (and if you do maybe you should seek help), the thought does drift across your mind every now and then. Here’s a fun fact for you: you are 14% more likely to die on your own birthday than on any other day. It’s true, and horribly unfair, considering that there are 364 other days that would work just as well, but it’s true nonetheless. 14% may not sound like a lot, but it’s enough to cross your mind when it comes time to blow out your candles. It’s a source of closure, I guess, beginning and end all wrapped up in a neat loop, but still ironic. Especially now that my sister, my twin sister, has died on our twenty-seventh birthday. I can’t help but wonder what will happen by next year.
An organization called SOL, Sing Out Loud, began holding rallies all across the country. Metallica came out as a huge supporter of the movement, along with a few other titans of the music industry. They, of course, had other reasons for sharing their support. Since the song's release, record sales in all genres had dropped steadily at an unheard of pace. It was almost as if all other music had become obsolete overnight. TSOL, to which SOL claimed no affiliation, began staging extravagant bonfires on the front lawns of capital buildings where they burned thousands of copies of The Virgin Suicides, which had returned to a number of bestseller lists. The head of TSOL was a tall, full-bodied man who used the alias Humbert Humbert and made bombast statements about unprecedented declines in the nation's intellectual vitality and volonte de vivre. He spoke all over the country, almost daily, until his mysterious disappearance that October. His body was found in his car parked with the engine running on the shoulder of highway 441 just south of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The spot overlooked the back lot of the Harrah's Cherokee Casino Resort. He had with him three copies of The Virgin Suicides and a single cassette, lodged in the tape deck and set to repeat. The family that found the car said they knew something was wrong when they heard the warm pesante of the familiar tune echoing down the mountainside, heralding the car and a scene that had also become all too familiar.

Yes, I recommend focusing on your eyebrows. Since they frame your face, you want to make sure they always look good. The one-step trick I have for you is to fill them in. Before you try this, make sure your brows have been groomed (waxed/ threaded/etc). Keep in mind that if you have naturally full brows, you may not want to fill them in. If you fall into this category and want an alternative, let me know.
Line your pencil up on the side of your nose to find where the brow begins. From there, angle the pencil towards the center of the eye to locate the arch. Lastly, angle the brush to the outer corner of your eye to find where it should end.

Everywhere you look, style is silently telling a story about the person underneath

aybe it’s not just a shirt, not just a hat, not just some worn shoes. A person’s style could actually be a representation of his or her personality, love for a particular hobby or place or newfound confidence. This idea of clothing representing something deeper than an impulse buy takes on a new meaning when the person wearing it is an American soldier. I had the privilege of speaking with Cassandra Waters about her style both in and out of uniform. Cassandra - "Cass" for short - served in the Army Reserves from 2006-2014 as an 88M (Motor Transport Operator), or as she puts it, “Little girl in BIG trucks. Boom!” If you know her, you know she has great style that reflects the likes of such classy, well-dressed women as Jackie O and Grace Kelly, but I wanted to know more about what it feels like for her when she is dressing in uniform.

Cass reminds us, “The same consideration should be applied when wearing images or designs of the American Flag - if you do, do so with respect.” Also, remember it is unlawful to wear pieces of military uniforms as a civilian. Imagine wearing long sleeves, long pants, and boots in the midst of our tri-state’s hot and humid summer. According to Cass, a soldier in her ACU (Army Combat Uniform) cannot just roll up the sleeves if it’s too hot. It sure sounds miserable, but she never had any complaints. Instead, she's always been more focused on the sense of responsibility and pride that comes with the uniform. “The ACU is a powerful thing. For me, wearing the uniform inspired feelings of strength," Sgt. Waters says. "Not invincibility, but the knowledge that in any situation, I wasn’t alone." As she sees it, soldiers have to earn the right to wear the uniform, and earn it she did. While the rest of us are just throwing on whatever in the morning or spending an hour just to decide what color shirt to wear, know that

Learning to "Adult" POST GRAD PERSPECTIVE WITH MARISA PATWA
E
very step of your life, your parents are there to guide you: they bathe you, clothe you, they even wipe your butt for you. They give you a free place to live, cook you gourmet meals, help you study for that impossible geometry test - even when they don’t remember any of the math themselves -cry with you when you have your first heartbreak and laugh with you when you do something so ridiculous, you both can’t help but smile. But as each birthday passes, from sweet 16 to “I can finally buy lottery tickets 18," we push our parents away and they even start to take a step back: biting their tongues when they watch us go out with friends who might not have our best interests at heart and no longer overwhelm us with their sage wisdom. It’s not because they don’t love us, but because they want us to learn from our own mistakes and figure out how to succeed on our own, even when it seems like we will only fail. It’s a strange dichotomy for them too: wanting to baby us forever but also wanting us to mature and grow into a strong adult of our own. Now, I’m 22. I’ve just graduated from the University of Evansville and I can truly say that I still need my mom. I’m in this weird transition period where it’s time for me to grow up and be my own adult. I feel this unnerving pressure to live up to this societal expectation of what an adult is but I don’t feel like one. I feel like a little kid pretending to be a grownup. I’m desperately searching for full-time jobs during the day but watching CW shows and eating Fruity Pebbles at night. Not to mention, I would still rather take a bubble bath over a shower any day. And yet, even though I’m struggling, my mom is still there for me: encouraging me to follow my dreams and not settle for a job that is beneath the journalism degree I earned. So to all recent graduates or millennials just trying to find your way, it’s OK if you don’t have it figured out yet because you will get there. And it is ok if you still have your mom on speed dial because I certainly do. And I don’t think I’ll ever take her off.

In the wake of the tragedy in Orlando, aren't there some people that God wouldn't and/or shouldn't forgive? There can be no faith-based rationale or excuse for what happened in Orlando. No authentic faith tradition calls for the whole-sale slaughter of anyone. The current meme is true: “If your religion requires you to hate someone, you need a new religion.” And, for the record, don’t give me that tired old line about “hating the sin but loving the sinner.” Most of the time, we hate them both. That’s because we are so limited in how we love. We love conditionally. We love because we should, or because we are told to. We love within limits. We love in part. God’s love is unconditional. God loves without limits, without restrictions, without any sense of a quid pro quo. God’s love is blind to all of the categories and provisos we tend to employ. In that limitless love, is complete forgiveness. We Christians call it “grace” - undeserved, unmerited, unwarranted love. As one person put it to me, “God loves you, don’t ask me why.” As for those who commit heinous crimes and those who advocate hatred and violence, we leave them in God’s hands. As for us, we must seek to reflect as much of God’s pure and generous love into the shadows of pain and sorrow that seem to be growing all around us. Breaking the "Us vs. Them" Mentality (or Putting the 'Us' Back in 'USA') I'll be the first to admit that I am absolutely baffled by our nation's obsession with sports. It's not for a lack of understanding or inability to play them; I played multiple sports all the way through high school, and was a starting pitcher in college. But watching someone want to literally beat the crap out of another person just for wearing the other team's hat or jersey - either online or in person - is something that boggles my mind to no end. I can remember reading a quote from an Alabama fan saying, "I'd rather have my daughter in a whorehouse" than at their bitter rivals' college, Auburn. Sadly, it's not just sports, nor is it exclusive to our country. Have you ever watched members of British Parliament yelling at each other? The Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition's arguments often end up devolving into childish insults back and forth at each other. One time back in '04 I actually thought Tony Blair was going to start in with some "Your mother is so fat..." jokes. (I hope you read that in a British accent.) And we couldn't discuss rabid sports fans without mentioning soccer - or "football" to Tony Blair - and its particularly, uh, "passionate" fans. After watching footage of riots before, after, and during their games, I've come to the conclusion that maybe SNL wasn't too far off with their Scottish Soccer Hooligans Weekly sketches. But if this election cycle has taught us anything, it's that when people discuss politics online, they often make the most zealous superfans seem like My Little Pony enthusiasts. (And I don't mean Bronies. We don't speak of Bronies.) I'm certainly not above reproach, either; there have been plenty of times I've been barely better than a drunken football fan in an online discussion. So are we programmed to naturally want to fight each other, especially those who are different? Maybe. But just because we have the predilection to do so doesn't mean we have to follow through on it. There's nothing to lose in listening to another point of view on any topic. Best case scenario, you'll learn more about yourself and reaffirm or reexamine your own beliefs; worst case scenario, you may gain understanding and compassion for another viewpoint you'd never considered. We're all human, and we're all in this together. And we all - again, including myself could use a reminder of this every now and then. - Jonathan Gluff

Isn't it time to just live and let live? "If a bullet should enter my brain, let that bullet destroy every closet door." -Harvey Milk An eerie self-prophecy of his death, this statement hits especially hard as I write this. The Pulse Nightclub shooting is fresh, and here at home, we celebrated the 37th Annual TSA Pride Picnic the very next day. With heavy hearts, we tried to make the best of it, uplifting our brothers and sisters. The road toward equality has been a rocky one at best, and with recent tragedies, it's clear that it remains unpaved with no foreseeable end. As with any civil rights movement, no matter how much support a community has or how tirelessly allies work with the oppressed, there's still this malicious force driven by hatred and borne of fear that rears its ugly head on the brightest of days. And of course, people want to chop the murders in Orlando into neat little political talking points: gun control, ISIS, blah, blah, blah. The victims have been identified and barely-cold bodies cleared, families have been notified, candlelight vigils are taking place all over the world. The solidarity is beautiful, but the murky surface tension of related topics are just under a boil. And of course, hardly anyone is mentioning the fact that most of the people who died are POC. White right-wing nuts are polishing their guns between Facebook posts and comments that are downright frightening - victim-blaming, Islamophobia, homophobia... Meanwhile, 50 innocent lives have been snuffed out prematurely, and although people are grieving in general, those victims' families, friends, and significant others are destroyed. All of those hearts have stopped beating because of who they loved. Isn't it time to just live and let live? If one isn't harming another, why does it matter to you? Let it go. And this message is for the terrified youth - do not get discouraged. Do NOT be ashamed of who you are. Be proud, be kind, be compassionate. We cannot battle hate with hate, but we can be visible, stand up for one another, and practice love. Don't give up, you're never alone. Not fond of either party? Vote Libertarian In this upside down election year, voters are more likely than ever to consider a third party. And while an Independent candidate might not win, they can potentially sway the vote and help turn an election. Remember Ross Perot in '92? That's where the Libertarian party comes into play. Locally, Independent-minded voters might recognize a familiar name when they go to the ballot in November: Andrew Horning. Horning is no stranger to the election process. In fact, he's run for three of the most important offices at the state and federal levels. Most recently, in 2014, he ran for Congress in the 8th district. Republican Larry Bushon won reelection easily, but Horning will again challenge for that seat this year. To date, Horning has never garnered more than 6% of the vote in any election, but his presence has arguably affected the outcome of at least one race - namely the 2012 Senate race in which Republican Richard Mourdock made some unfavorable comments that turned off many traditional Republican voters who ultimately cast their vote for Horning. Mourdock lost by 6%. Admittedly, Horning won't win, but it will be interesting to see if the Libertarian party can makeup any ground this year. She’s finally healed up, spayed, upto-date on all her vaccines, and living large in the Cageless Cat Lounge! Kit Kat is a snuggly girl and LOVES the elusive red dot from the laser pointer. Charra - Charra is a female American Staffordshire Terrier mix! She was found as a stray on the north side so her back story is pretty blank. Charra is social, affectionate, and she just wants a family that will make her part of the pack. She’ll enjoy daily walks and Netflix on the couch every night. The Bannowskys and HARLEY & PETUNIA
Back in 2015, Conny and Chris Bannowsky were living in an apartment where pets were forbidden. But with a move to a new home on the horizon, they started making periodic visits to the VHS and spending time with the animals. That's when a sweet cat named Petunia first caught their eye. She had been living at the shelter a long time and the Bannowskys just knew that she was the one, especially after they saw a picture of her together with another older VHS cutie, Harley. Now they wanted both cats. But as it turned out, Petunia had suddenly become quite popular and several other people were interested. The Bannowskys had to act fast. Just one problem: they were still at the apartment. Throwing caution to the wind, they adopted both Harley and Petunia and hid them from the landlord until it was time to move. Now they're all one big happy family at the new house. Conny says the VHS has been a great help, especially when Harley was briefly lost. A happy ending!

MOVIE REVIEWS Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (PG-13) Paramount Pictures
Everyone's favorite reptiles are back in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, the sequel to the 2014 reboot. In Out of the Shadows, our four protagonists, along with sidekicks April O'Neil and Casey Jones, must stop the evil mutant General Krang from assembling his base - the Technodrome - on Earth where he can destroy the entire planet. Krang calls on the help of mad scientist Baxter Stockman, who creates a portal which enables Krang access to Earth from his own planet, and the Turtles' arch nemesis, Shredder, who has recently broken out of prison with the help of Stockman. When comparing the two movies in the franchise, there are some subtle differences. In the original TMNT, the Turtles were presented as mere vigilantes and the movie steered away from the bizarre. In a lot of ways, how the Turtles were portrayed was similar to how Batman was portrayed in The Dark Knight. In Out of the Shadows, the movie takes on more of a cartoonish effect. In addition to the aforementioned Krang and the Technodrome, the film also features Shredder's knuckle-headed assistants Bebop and Rocksteady. Again, these additions give Out of the Shadows a cartoon feel. Rest assured kids will love this movie as well as fans of the TMNT franchise. It features all the classic characters, the story line is easy to follow, and it's just a whole lot of fun. - Bryan Fox
X-Men: Apocalypse (PG-13)

From the beginning of time, Apocalypse, the original and most powerful mutant from Marvel's X-Men universe, has been seen as a god. Amassing the powers of many other mutants, he becomes immortal and invincible, yet is stuck in rubble and debris for thousands of years. When awakened, Apocalypse is dissatisfied with the world as he finds it and is determined to collect a handful of the most powerful mutants to help him cleanse Earth and recreate a mankind over which he will rule. Naturally, Professor Xavier and the rest of the world’s favorite X-Men join together in a sort of ‘get the gang back together’ effort to save the world from being destroyed and to abolish this seemingly unstoppable nemesis. X-Men: Apocalypse has a storyline that is easy to follow, especially for those that are not avid X-Men fans, giving insight to the backstory of some of the most notable mutants. This being said, the storyline does lack something, but the film succeeds in being entertaining, nonetheless. The combat scenes are certainly eye-catching as a result of the incredible special effects, but seem to be placed in unusual backdrops throughout. I also found Apocalypse’s deity mindset and his costume to be off-putting and strange, but I suppose the antagonist is meant to be unlikeable. Still, X-Men: Apocalypse is visually appealing with some amazing cinematography, even if it lacks many truly memorable scenes or performances from the star-studded lineup of actors. But if you like X-Men and their "save the world" approach, this is definitely worth checking out. - Alysha Rice

DVD R EVIEWS The Hunting Ground (PG-13) The Weinstein Company
Getting into your dream college is a monumental achievement, and it's supposed to be some of the best times of your life, but that dream can also quickly turn into a nightmare, speaking specifically to the epidemic of rape and sexual assault on college campuses. With an immeasurable number of unreported cases due to the lack of response from administrators and law enforcement, victims are often forced to either remain in school with their attackers or drop out with no justice. Most recently, with the light sentencing in the Brock Turner case and rampant victim-blaming attitudes, The Hunting Ground is an appropriate and painfully straightforward view into this culture. Written and directed by documentarian Kirby Dick (The Invisible War), the film follows the activism of survivors Annie Clark and Andrea Pino, ticking off a number of blood-curdling statistics, delving also into the great lengths that universities will go to protect their image, endowments, and athletes. Both provocative and informative, it was nominated for 20 awards, received six wins, and has caused a powerful stir regarding the issues addressed, even affecting changes to policy. Harsh but completely necessary.
Naomi & Ely's No Kiss List (Unrated) Netflix
Lifelong best friends and platonic soulmates Naomi (Victoria Justice) and Ely (Pierson Fode) have started a new chapter in their adventure: college. With a strict bestie code in place, the two mark certain men as unavailable so they never catch feelings for the same guy. Dealing with one set of divorced parents, infidelity between the others, and the newfound, somewhat scary freedom of approaching adulthood, their codependence tightens on Naomi's end as Ely's begins to unravel - especially when their agreement gets broken. The turn of events, however, opens new doors with the possibility of emotional growth and forgiveness. Based on the novel and directed by newcomer Kristin Hanggi, Naomi & Ely's No Kiss List is a vibrant romantic comedy that's almost too adorable despite being far from a tour de force, and even with a twinkly soundtrack and Justice's bubbly charm, it still scratches at the surface of some deeper thematic material without losing focus. If you're looking for a cutesy chipper-upper to occupy your mind for a bit, this is something I would recommend. Just don't tell anyone I said that - Whitney Patterson

NEWS4U | MUSIC REVIEWS Chance the Rapper Coloring Book Self-Released “Kanye’s best prodigy. He ain’t sign me, but he proud of me” touts Chancellor Bennett on his new mixtape, Coloring Book. Earlier this year, Kanye West released The Life of Pablo which he called “a gospel album with a whole lot of cursing on it.” Now, Chance the Rapper follows in Kanye’s footsteps and releases his own better “gospel hip hop” album. On Coloring Book, Chance is fearless and proud as he brings God into the secular world and praises him in front of everyone. It’s crazy how fresh and innovative hip hop can sound when you throw a lot of gospel into the mix. Yes, Chance is a believer, but Coloring Book isn’t inherently a Christian album - it’s a deeply personal album. Chance might praise God on the album, but he’s also praising friends, family, hip hop, and himself. The album is a joyous celebration featuring guest spots from Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Lil Wayne, and many others. The vibrant gospel feel makes this one of the happier and more unique rap albums of the past few years. When scholars look back at this time in hip hop years from now, Coloring Book will be studied as a classic. Kanye’s best prodigy, indeed. - Russell Finn.
Car Seat Headrest Teens of Denial Matador Generation X had Kurt Cobain - the millennials have Will Toledo of Car Seat Headrest. CSH began as Toledo’s solo project in 2010 in which he released several albums on his Bandcamp profile. Now, after developing a cult following online and signing with Matador Records, the 23-year-old Toledo has enlisted a full band, relocated to Seattle, and created a masterpiece. Teens of Denial captures the sentiments of many bored kids addicted to their cell phones, abusing drugs, and disavowing God. Toledo is an excellent songwriter able to convey the problems of young adulthood in a very mature manner. The lyrics are personal and plainspoken, easily allowing listeners to empathize with Toledo when he says things like, “They’ve got a portrait of Van Gogh on the Wikipedia page for Clinical Depression. Yeah, it helps you describe it.” It’s not just the depressing confessions that draw comparison to Cobain, CSH’s sound is reminiscent of Seattle’s past. The album has a pretty consistent punk/grunge lean, but other influences pop up throughout. Some songs, like opener “Fill in the Blank,” sound like Pinkerton-era Weezer while others like “Drugs with Friends” sound like Beck covering Pavement. Teens of Denial won’t have the same impact as Nevermind, but it’s certainly great in its own right. CSH’s anthemic garage rock will have you screaming and crying along for weeks on end. - Russell Finn

MUSIC The Julie Ruin Hit Reset Hardly Art
After years of side projects between bouts of battling Lyme disease, the original riot grrrl is back. Bands like Bikini Kill paved the way for a lot of female bands who, for the most part (despite achieving commercial success) have been unable to hold a torch to such raw authenticity. In a resurgent landscape of saccharine feminism and an increase of societal distaste for the term itself, it's great to have some genuine snarl back. Set 'em straight, Kathleen Hanna. With all of the curled-lip, high-energy percussion and frank lyrics of BK paired with the electronic elements of Le Tigre, Hit Reset feels like a relevant revival of everything Hanna was meant to do and more personal, which is rare for her. The title track is nostalgic, showcasing Hanna's uncanny ability to manipulate her vocals to match the flow of the music. "I Decide" includes lyrics that acknowledge yet disregard patriarchy - "I belong to the wolves who drug me in their mouths just like a baby/ But I decide" and "Mr. So and So" addresses the issue of patronizing "male feminist" culture in breathless spoken word. The vulnerability bleeds through on the piano ballad "Calverton," proving that even the toughest chicks get emotionally exhausted. Powerful isn't even a good enough word for this release.
Reed Four From Bedford to Bellemeade Self-Released Long-awaited and rightfully so, Reed Four's first full-length album is experimental yet cohesive, a feat in itself due to the challenges faced during recording and production. I recall a conversation with guitarist and lead singer Andria Reed last year after a show at PG and getting the feel that it would be out... soon. The better part of a year later, From Bedford to Bellemeade is the most solid local release of 2016 so far. A quartet of seriously talented and humble musicians has managed to create a solid rock compilation of growth through grief. The first track I recognized was "Old Piano," a jam that adequately displays the band's versatility, incorporating bluesy riffs and a shoegaze-y chorus of Reed's powerful, bittersweet voice. The haunting "Wink WInk" touches on the souring of relationships and the need to place blame during the morphing of sadness to anger and the vicious cycle of the grieving process. The chilling "Me and You" is on the upswing, when one starts to realize it's time to move on but admittedly isn't ready and the self-awareness that brings, a perfect precursor to "Frightened" and the deceitfully upbeat "Slow." The sun breaks through on "Parachute" and "Drive," where she realizes "I've let so many people drive me around/ four years spent away from myself, time spent being too proud." Damn.
REVIEWS Tegan and Sara Love You to Death Vapor/Warner Bros.
Twin pop powerhouses Tegan and Sara Quin have shapeshifted in a pleasant way over the years, and their eighth studio album is the epitome of that. In an escape from the punk of the latter years and the coffee-house duo of their beginnings, Love You to Death is synth and bass with stripped-down hypercrystalline vocals and transparent lyrics. Although honest about their sexuality since moment one, that's never been the direct focus of their music, which left a generalized appeal. With specific pronoun usage and musical discussion of lesbian-specific issues, it's all feels wrapped up in a glittery package. Speaking directly to the demographic, "Boyfriend," the first single from the album, is a classic story of the closeted, curious girl who's dating a guy but also seeks a guru, stringing another girl along. Disgustingly catchy with a late '80's Madonna-meets-Taylor-Swift vibe, the struggle is real - "I let you take advantage cause it felt so good/ I blame myself for thinking we both understood." No worries, however - besides "B/W/U," all other songs are as ambiguous as previous releases. Club groover "Dying to Know" is lyrically oldschool, saltier than sweet and puts an ex on blast - "...I wanna understand/ hit me back cause you owe me that." Strangely, outing themselves in their music furthers the idea that *gasp* gays have the same problems as everyone else..
Flume Skin Mom + Pop Music/Future Classic Not even 25, Australian producer Harley Stretten has more beats under his belt than most. The king of eclectic collaboration choices, Flume has cast out a really wide net for this one, although I'm a bit surprised and a little disappointed that fellow Aussie crooner Chet Faker is a ghost on Skin. Despite that, there's no denying that this compilation predicts Flume going nowhere but up from here. A phenomenal sophomore release, it shows that EDM doesn't have to get boring and puddle into all of the rest. Joining forces with the likes of Kanye West's grasshopper Vic Mensa on "Lose It," Swedish singer/songwriter Tove Lo ("Habits [Stay High]"), Raekwon of WuTang Clan, and Beck, he's obviously proven his chops to some heavy-hitters. "Helix," the intro, invokes the same hype for the album that the band does at a high school basketball game. The steady build and heavy drops are both apprehensive and satisfying, flowing easily into the industrial mix of "Never Be Like You," a vocally stunning confessional penned by Canadian pop songstress Kai. "Say It" is the opposite - explicit with no tearful apologies. The main event, for me at least, is "Tiny Cities" with Beck, because, like... where have you been? Also, it further solidifies Beck's constant metamorphosis, which inarguably makes him an incredible musician. News4U tags along to the Windy City for a guided tour and plenty of drinks - this is what we remember

4U Account Representative Terri Hilborn was recently whisked away by Working Distributors (Anheuser-Busch) for a tour of Goose Island Brewery & Brew House in Chicago, IL. She was accompanied on this adventure by Matt Reinhart and Ted Thompson of WD, Winetree Liquors Owner Bob Jarrett, Gerst Haus Bar Manager Paul Ankenbrand and Carson Koehker of Knob Hill. It was a motley crew, all right. Once the WD company plane touched down, they were off and running (taking a cab, more likely) to their destination, ready for a tough day of sampling and/or guzzling the incredible selection of lagers, ales and more that Goose Island produces. After functioning as a smaller operation for a number of years, Goose Island really got going in 1995. It was eventually purchased by Anheuser-Busch and they've been bringing out great products ever since like Bourbon County Stouts and the very popular collection of beers named after women - Sofie and Matilda, in particular (eight in all with mega-high ratings). After a fascinating history of the brewery provided by Goose Island's knowledgeable host, Aaron, the group was handed over to Director of Operations, Mark Kamarauskas. Together, they set off on a tour of the Brew House where Hilborn, especially, was blown away by the intense and lengthy brewing process. Her head was practically spinning - though it may have been more a result of the many tastings along the way. In her words, "What was so interesting about the tour was learning about all of the fine details that make the difference in producing a great beer as opposed to simply a good beer - now I understand why Goose Island brews are ranked #1 in the world." Jarrett was equally impressed, particularly with the perks of the tour. "You get a chance to try other beers that are not available to the public like the Raspberry Bourbon County Stout," he says. "Wow! It's truly awesome and will hopefully be made available - that would be a real treat." An interesting side note: Jarrett reports that Bourbon County Stouts/Coffee Stouts and Barley

Wines are always released on Black Friday. They go quickly with lines outside liquor stores everywhere. As noted, there was plenty of sampling taking place. Ankenbrand kindly shared his thoughts. Bourbon County Stout Proprietors Blend: Unbelievably smooth, with chocolate and maple syrup flavors, roasted pecan notes and very little alcohol bite. Excellent beer! Sofie: Citrusy aroma with a highly-carbonated (fizzy) mouthfeel. Citrus, wheat, yeast and a little pepper flavor finishing dry with some funkiness to it. Great Saison! Matilda: Balanced sweet and sour flavors arise with fruity but tart notes throughout. This one is very complex but extremely enjoyable. Semi-dry finish. NEWS4U | BEER REVIEWS New Holland Lost Dune
Daniel Knight • 3.25 Lost Dune pours up a clear and effervescent medium golden-orange color. It sports a frothy two-finger head that settles to a half-finger cap. It leaves a lot of lacing as well. With ample and not overwhelming balanced aromas of blueberry followed up by citrus and spices, Lost Dune encourages me to taste it. The taste follows suit with flavors of citrus, malts, spices and of course, blueberries. I enjoyed this brew. The fruit flavors were subtle and believable with a drier, less sweet finish than many brews in this genre. It’s a respectable summer refresher. Paul Bragin • 3 A decent white head forms on this clear golden ale. The scent contains sweet notes from the malt and a generous amount of blueberries used in the brewing process. The first sip begins with more of the sweet notes, but the very long finish contains a strong spice presence from the coriander in the beer, which could be a bit off-putting for some beer drinkers. Pair it with salmon, pork or dishes with blueberries. Jabez Martinez • 2 This is a clear yellow beer. It says it's made with blueberries, but I couldn’t taste any. It also says it's made with coriander, but I could hardly taste that spice, either. I could taste a little bit of hops, but I had that old commercial in my head: “I can’t taste my beer."
Fat Head's Bumble Berry
Daniel Knight • 2.75 Bumble Berry is a fruit beer. It’s golden amber in color and pours up with a frothy head of white. The head sticks around a while and there’s a bit of lacing. The smell is like a blueberry muffin, strong and undeniable. The flavor follows the smell, blueberry with some honey sweetness. It seems official to me. However, if you pay close attention, near the finish there's a pilsner-like malt backbone. This is not a beer style I’d ever choose and personally, I have a hard time calling it beer. That said and in the interest of being diplomatic, I’ll say it’s sweet and refreshing and will likely appeal to folks that don’t typically enjoy beer. Paul Bragin • 3.5 A very thick off-white head tops this golden honey-colored ale. The scent of blueberries really packs a punch when smelling the beer. The blueberry notes remain when drinking the beer, with some of the more tart aspects of the blueberry flavor coming through in the finish. This could be a good beer to have on hand during the hotter summer months for people who want to try something different. Pair it with oatmeal cookies. Jabez Martinez • 3 I could taste the blueberry flavor, but this one is a little sour. I could taste the honey but just the flavor of honey - it doesn't give it any sweetness. It does have a slight hops flavor but the sourness of the beer is kind of overpowering.
Founder's Mosaic Promise
Daniel Knight • 4 Here’s a pale ale from one of my favorite breweries. Mosaic Promise gets its name from the Mosaic hops and Golden Promise malt in its recipe. It pours up clear and yellow in the glass. Its half-finger head is not particularly impressive and doesn’t stick around long. Looks can be deceiving though. The citrus in the nose is prominent, definitely those Mosaic hops. I don't pick up on anything special about the malts and they're pretty downplayed in this brew anyway. It has all the same flavors as it does aromas. Its ABV is by my standards relatively low at 5.5%, placing it below most beers that deliver this level of flavor, making it a great choice as a session ale. I really enjoyed this pale ale and will certainly enjoy more in the future. Paul Bragin • 4.25 A thick white head rests on top of this strawcolored ale and never completely vanishes. Very strong citrus notes from the hops fill the nose. The hop presence seems a bit subdued at first when drinking the beer, but pine notes come through in the finish. This could serve as a great introduction to someone who normally avoids hoppy beers. This beer is only available from April to September, so get it soon. Jabez Martinez • 4.5 This is a hazy amber-colored beer. I could smell the hops right away, but when I started drinking, they were not as bold. I like the light hops flavor and the crisp, clean finish. I also like the simplicity of the beer which could become a good session beer.

Breckenridge Vanilla Porter
nose that left me wanting for more. It's somewhat light and lacks depth. I've experienced some excellent brews from this brewer, but in my opinion this isn't one of them. Some will love it. Give it a try. Paul Bragin • 4 A thick tan head crowns this dark brown to black porter when poured into an English pub glass. The scent profile contains a significant amount of vanilla in the beginning, followed by a roasted malt scent on the end. These reverse themselves when tasting the beer, with roasted malt on the tongue first, followed by some vanilla, with more malt in the finish. Pair it with a hamburger or mix it with vanilla ice cream.
Daniel Knight • 3 I like porters. This one pours up light black - that is, it’s not opaque, sunlight does pass through it - that transmits a dark ruby color with light. My bottle generated a healthy two-finger head with a khaki color. There’s a bit of residual lacing as well. Like most porters, there's essentially no carbonation. The aroma is some sweet roast with an abundance of vanilla. The vanilla seems to me to be a bit artificial. Either way it's not too bad. The flavor follows the
Jabez Martinez • 5 This is a nice, dark porter and the aroma of the vanilla hits you in the face immediately. I love the vanilla flavor mixed with coffee and roasted malts. Unlike other vanilla flavored beers, this one is flavored correctly. I am a little biased reviewing this beer because it's one of my top five favorites of all time.

Daniel Knight • 3 Not to be confused with beer, the only characteristic hard apple cider shares is a similar ABV. It pours up clear and foamless with a pale light straw color. I smell tart apples, vanilla and pears. The flavor is similar and is thankfully and surprisingly somewhat dry. Numerous hard ciders I've had in the past were entirely too sweet in my opinion. If you're into this style of training, I suggest you give this one a try.
Daniel Knight • 2.5 Here's another hard cider. Its nose is of sweet apple juice. It seems like there's something else there, too, but I can't put my finger on it. There's a slight tartness in the first few sips; I like that. Continuing to sip, the bitterness becomes less noticeable and there's a greater sense of sweetness; I don't like that. These hard ciders that are being marketed today are made from concentrate and mostly artificially sweetened and flavored. I’m not into that.
Paul Bragin • 3.5 No head forms on this clear golden cider. The smell of fresh apples dominates the nose along with a hint of citrus, evoking scenes of an orchard. This cider maintains only the slightest hint of carbonation on the tongue. Tart apple flavors reminiscent of Granny Smith apples first hit the tongue, but some sweetness manages to appear in the finish. Pair it with a Gouda cheese or use it to cook apple desserts. Jabez Martinez • 4.5 This is a clear yellow beverage. I'm not a big fan of the apple wave that has been thrown on the market, but I really like this one. It just tastes like apple cider. Unlike other applebased beers, I couldn't taste the alcohol in this one - though it does have a 5% ABV. I would prefer a little carbonation but then again, it's hard apple cider, and a pretty good one.
Paul Bragin • 3.75 No trace of a head appears when this cider pours into a glass. The sweet smell of apples and citric acid dominate the scent profile. The apple taste continues with the first sip, followed by sugar notes and tartness in the finish. It’s decent, but there are other ciders you’ll want to try. It has a 6% ABV, and I could taste a slight wine flavor to it which turned me off. It also has another twang to it that I couldn’t put my finger on worth giving a try but probably not something I'd recommend for everyone.

Walter t he Wine Guy Liquor Locker's wine expert has some chillingly good suggestions to help you beat the summer heat
W
ell, as the song goes, "THE HEAT IS ON!" And with the heat comes the summer Barbeque Season. Most of the time we just grab a cold beer, sit in the lawn chair and sweat, but there are some really exceptional alternatives that will both satisfy your thirst, and more importantly, your TASTE! My first recommendation is Callia Bella, an Argentine Syrah/Malbec blend that the makers want you to serve chilled! It's a blend of 60% Syrah and 40% Malbec. The nose on this wine brings aromas of Blackberries, Plum, and Violets. The palate is balanced with flavors of Ripe Cherries, Red Raspberries, and a nice spicy Cocoa. They left a little residual sugar in this wine that smoothes and softens it; chilling it brings out the fruitiness. This wine pairs well with those sticky, messy, Ribs that we love to eat all summer long! The wine is under 10 bucks so buy some to have as another choice. My next choice is Motto "Unabashed" Zinfandel. This is a smooth, easydrinking Zinfandel that has a nice spicy finish. The wine is a blend of 90% Zinfandel and 10% Petit Syrah. I actually called the winery to ask if this wine would take chilling and they said YES! So, I tried it and it was WONDERFUL! Chilling brought out the wonderful fruit flavors and enhanced the spiciness this wine brings to the table. I would be happy to serve this wine with a BBQ Pulled Pork sandwich, Ribs, or if you like, Spicy Fried Chicken! Because sometimes it's too hot to stand over a grill! This wine is about $15 a bottle and certainly over-delivers.
The Wagner Family produces one of the best, critically-acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignons in the world, Caymus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. It isn't cheap, but I have to admit, it's just a Rock Solid wine that you can age in your cellar or open and enjoy. Their entry into the world of Zinfandel is called "Beran" California Zinfandel. The price is in the lower $20 range, and should be purchased soon, because they have a tendency to get more expensive with subsequent vintages. This is one of the most elegant Zinfandels I have had in quite a while. The nose is floral with notes of violets and spice. The flavors from this wine are truly sublime, with Blackberry, Tart Cherry, and a light spiciness and soft vanilla. I would love this wine with a good steak, but honestly, this is one I would put a slight chill on and sit in the yard and enjoy. This wine is so well made I would rather just sip on it and maybe throw some cheese or sausage at it to bring out the flavors. Just a wonderful experience. With the temperature increasing, please remember to drink as much water as you can. Every year we hear of people being overcome by the heat; please don't let that be you! My third choice is Terra D' Oro, Amador County Zinfandel. Here is where I kinda geek out. This is the location I look for when I am looking for Zinfandel. In general, Zinfandel from the Amador County AVA is not quite as high in alcohol, the flavors are usually softer, and it's just a better drinking experience. This wine delivers on all counts! It displays vibrant aromas of rich, spicy clove and big generous fruit with hints of vanilla. The taste of this wine is just amazing! It gives you an abundance of Plum and flavors of dense, juicy Blackberry. It has a nice, round mouthfeel of well-integrated tannins on the finish. This is the wine you have with Smoked Beef Brisket, or that Grilled Ribeye Steak. It's moderately-priced around $18 a bottle. As you may have noticed, I do like a Good Zinfandel. This wine can be really smooth, and almost Cabernet Sauvignon-like, and if that is not your wine, it can also be really fruit forward, and with higher alcohol levels. With that I would like to tell you about my last recommendation. In the wine world there are "Rockstar" wineries and this last one is from one of those.
