FROM THE EDITOR

Editor’s Eye What I’m loving this month

spring awakening

The Ilana Embroidered Border trim from Samuel & Sons, shown in a neutral tone, features swirling vines with a hand-clipped velvet leaf detail. samuelandsons.com

THE SPRING SEASON IS nearly upon us and it’s arguably the most joyful time of year in Atlanta. You can likely find me picking up farm-fresh produce at the Peachtree Road Farmer’s Market (carrots straight from the garden can’t be beat), on a brisk morning stroll on the BeltLine, or sipping something—whether coffee or sauvignon blanc—around a fire-pit at The Chastain. The air is lighter, and as Atlantans get back into the post-winter groove, it’s our homes (and the lush surrounding landscapes beginning to bloom) that are our key motivators. Our March issue encourages readers to embrace the season with three picture-perfect homes dressed in their springtime best. In Buckhead, Phoebe Howard and Blake Segars strike the perfect balance between old and new for a fun, young family in a

nearly 100-year-old house (page 78), and nearby, Virginia Cheek and Greg Busch follow suit with a transitional-style new-build that is classic, yet kid-friendly (page 114). A stone’s throw from Buckhead’s Duck Pond, Lauren DeLoach brings a 1930s gem— and its homeowner looking for a change—into an exciting new chapter (page 98). Also inside: Our cover story details the three-decades worth of TLC landscape designer Alex Smith has poured into iconic also into their friendship (page 8). Don’t forget to mark your calendar for two can’t-miss events happening this month, both benefiting worthy causes: AH&L’s 5th-annual Tour of Kitchens March 15–16, and the High Museum Wine Auction March 20–22. See you there!

Verdant Views above left Right off the driveway, a plethora of A STRONG FOUNDATION and never too fussy: These words describe not only the personal garden of famed Atlanta designer Jackye Lanham, but the over 30-year friendship she cultivated with landscape designer Alex Smith. After moving into her Buckhead home 40 years ago—which notably celebrates its 100th birthday this year—Lanham was immediately charmed and knew she only wanted to make improvements, not changes. With thoughtful home renovations and additions by Norman Askins, Yong Pak, D. Stanley Dixon, and William Litchfield, the garden received all-star treatment to match. Recruiting celebrated garden designer Ryan Gainey in the late 1980s, Lanham was soon introduced to his young apprentice Smith. When Smith branched out on his own 26 years ago with Alex Smith Garden Design, Ltd., there was no question about who should continue to maintain Lanham’s gracious grounds. “We just speak the same language,” says Smith. “I get it, she gets it, and we don’t even have to talk about it.” Situated on a small bluff and with a circular driveway encapsulating it, the property brims with pockets of intrigue and curated moments—the kind that only emerge when you truly know someone. Keeping in mind Lanham’s daily walks along the driveway with her Cavalier King Charles spaniel, Hutty, Smith planted an abundance of blue hydrangeas to frame the strong gable on the back of the home. “We wanted to create a layering effect, so that when she’s walking and looks back up at this beautiful house and all these plants, she can just embrace what an architectural gem it is,” says Smith. 10

Garden Glory Climbing hydrangea and Preziosa hydrangea add color, and nearby potted Wheeler’s Dwarf pittosporum and dwarf mondo grass reside. “You can walk through the garden at any time of the year and it would strike you as being a beautiful garden, even if it’s not in the middle of the growing season,” says Smith.

Echoing the home’s architecture, the garden maintains a strong foundation, dotted with even-tempered boxwoods and blooms. Lanham and Smith, who serve on the board of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art (ICAA) together, are kindred spirits when it comes to historic preservation and appreciation. Not looking to make any radical changes to the outdoor areas or start anew, the pair focused on incorporating storied improvements. “I think we’ve done a good job of seamlessly weaving in different types of plants over the years,” says Smith. “You can’t really tell where we start and stop, what’s old and what’s new.” Around the back of the home, a spacious terrace sits atop the garage and looks out over the property. Tailor-made for Lanham, who is known to host inspiring ICAA parties, the rooftop terrace and adjacent granite terrace allow for guests to comfortably spill

out from the home into the garden. “When you’re up there, you don’t feel like you’re in the city because you’re up high among the trees and beautiful plantings,” says Lanham. “It’s calming.” Despite possessing undeniable year-round interest, springtime brings a special sense of wonder. “It’s spirit-lifting to see the beginning of life again in the spring,” says Lanham. Seen from the kitchen and jokingly referred to as hydrangea hill, the landscape transforms into a “sea of white when it blooms,” adds Smith. Lanham, fond of cutting her own clippings, decorates her home with a constant rotation of fresh arrangements from the garden. As any good gardener—or friend—can attest, proper attention and support leads to growth. “Jackye is the crème de la crème of interior designers; she could have anybody she wants and picked me,” says Smith. “I’m flattered, and I don’t ever take it for granted.” See Resources, Back of Book. 13

Brookwood Hills

Written by TUCKER BERTA SARKISIAN

HISTORY

Illustrated by MEREDITH GILLESPIE

Brookwood Hills was developed in 1922 by Benjamin “Mr. B.F.” Burdett and his son, Arthur. To help design the new development, the Burdetts hired engineer O.F. Kauffman, who had Druid Hills’ design on his resume, working alongside famous landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted (where he evidently was influenced by his preference of winding streets and abundant greenspace). Oak trees planted by the original development team now create a beautiful, shady canopy. The community pool in the center of the neighborhood was originally a spring-fed lake. In the early 1930s, the Burdetts fenced in the area, hired lifeguards, and charged admission to take a swim. Residents worked together to build future projects including the pool, bathhouse, tennis courts, and playing fields—defining characteristics of the community. 24

Generations of Atlantans have wholesome stories from the Brookwood Hills neighborhood, the famously familyfriendly community located off Peachtree just south of Buckhead (near the I-75 and I-85 split) and just north of Ansley Park and Midtown. Founded in 1922, it’s one of Atlanta’s earliest suburban developments and had the incredible foresight to set aside land for recreation. Today, the reasons to move to Brookwood Hills are the same as they were 100 years ago: the community amenities, including pool and swim teams, tennis courts and ALTA teams, the park, and storied woods where kids still have good old-fashioned exploratory fun. Any family living within the resident boundaries can join the club and attend social events. Because it was developed in phases, Brookwood Hills has rich architectural diversity, ranging from 1920s Tudors, Georgians, and Colonials, to smaller houses built following World War II, traditional two-story homes built in the 1960s, and a peppering of modern homes built within the last decade. The neighborhood is tucked away but surrounded by urban life, including a myriad of restaurants, shops, and conveniences around Piedmont Hospital, and the cultural attractions of Midtown and Buckhead.

FUTURE

IYKYK

It might surprise you that Brookwood Hills, with its unassuming nature, has been home to some major wattage stars, including Ed Helms (The Office), Kathryn Stockett (author of The Help), Vern Yip (designer), and Robert Shaw (ASO conductor).

BIG BRAG

“Brookwood Hills’ ability to maintain its 1920s charm while being surrounded by Atlanta’s urban development is really unique. But, what is not always expected, is the sense of community that really is the heart of the neighborhood.” —Lee Kleinhelter, Designer and Neighborhood Resident

Brookwood Hills has a robust social scene, and will kick off this spring with a touch of vintage glam as the Brookwood Hills Garden Club presents its biennial fundraiser, Palm Royale: A 1960s Palm Beach-inspired poolside soirée on April 5. The ticketed event may be attended by nonresidents (as long as they stick to the dress code: 1960s Palm Beach club chic). High-level sponsors will be invited to a pre-party at a Garden Club member’s home just across the street from the pool (and, yes, grasshoppers will be flowing at both events). The club’s goal for the event is to raise funds to restore one of the entrances to the Alex Summers Clear Creek Preserve, enhancing the space with new swings, benches, and beautiful landscaping.

The Brookwood Hills Centennial Celebration in 2022 was a massive undertaking with formal and informal events, production of a “Dancing through the Decades” 30-minute video with historical images and news clips showing the evolution of the community over the last 100 years, and a video toast from celebrity former resident Ed Helms. Rightly so, Brookwood Hills is exceptionally proud of its history and the continued passion for the community by its residents.

WITHIN WALKING

Depending on where you are in the neighborhood, a 5- to 10-minute stroll will take you to a plethora of restaurants including El Azteca and the iconic R. Thomas and its parrots. The area’s largest employer, Piedmont Hospital, is just a quick trip down Brighton. And though it’s separated by a large wooded area with no access, parts of Brookwood Hills can detect notes of hoppy IPA in the air some days when SweetWater Brewing Company’s tanks are fired up and the wind is just right.

Naomi Von Habersham OVER THE PAST TWO months, on those blustery days when neither man nor beast wanted to be outside, I occupied my time by attempting to pare down my extensive collection of entertaining accessories, which admittedly included some rather random items. For the life of me, I don’t know why I owned not one, but two sterling silver champagne whisks meant to remove bubbles from a glass of champagne. What’s the point of removing them when bubbles are what make drinking champagne such fun? While the editing process allowed me to get rid of those nowunwanted pieces, it also gave me an opportunity to revisit entertaining trends that have come and gone. Some of you may remember when a stylish home bar required numerous cut-crystal decanters decked out in silver identification tags, all of which I chose to hang on to despite modern preferences. Speaking of liquor, vodka was not as popular back then as it is today, and tequila was practically nonexistent outside of Mexican restaurants. The drink of choice was usually scotch, sometimes bourbon, and occasionally rye. Another fun find was my vintage silver-plated chafing dish with an ebonized wood handle. Now that was the serving piece one had to have in the 1960s and 1970s. Trust me when I say that even the most humble hors d’oeuvres, such as cocktail wieners doused in grape jelly sauce, can be elevated to elegant fare when served from a silver chafing dish. Well, almost. Even though I no longer host as many dinner parties as I once did, and elaborate cocktail parties are, for me, a thing of the past, I found that I couldn’t part with as much stuff as I had hoped to. While it seems a shame to keep things that hardly get used, I realized that my collection is like a record of all the fun times I have had entertaining over the years, especially that New Year’s Eve soirée I hosted in 1992 that came to a screeching halt when the police made a surprise appearance. It turned out to be the party to end all (my) parties. 29

LEVEL UP Painted Hospitality’s new hot spot PAINTED PARK is the ultimate BeltLine destination Written by KATE STRICKLAND Photographed by DAVID CHRISTENSEN

THERE’S NO COMPETITION—Inman Park’s new recreational place of assembly takes home the gold. At Painted Park, indulge in sophisticated eats and drinks, all while unleashing your competitive side. CEO and president of Painted Hospitality Justin Amick is on a hot streak, adding to the company’s lineup of popular Atlanta “compeateries,” including The Painted Pin, The Painted Duck, and Painted Pickle. Their latest venture, Painted Park, provides a cozy neighborhood destination to gather together with friends—and the best part is it’s right on the BeltLine. Originally a piping factory, the stately brick structure on North Highland Avenue holds more than one history. “It’s a full circle moment for me because this venue was actually one of my father’s properties, his restaurant Parish,” says Amick, who used to work alongside his father there. “I feel very fortunate to continue the legacy of the building that my father started.” With nods to the beloved New Orleans-inspired brasserie and cafe throughout, more than just the structure remains. “I was the Parish general manager back in the day, and it’s where I met many of our now senior company members,” says Amick. Staying true to his roots and continuing brunch service— which was a staple at Parish—Painted Park offers brunch’s greatest hits including the Avocado Toast and Anson Mills Grits 30

A close look at the menu will reveal the nostalgic throwback section dotted with classic sandwich greats. Incoming spring weather offers ample opportunity to lounge outside, sipping on a signature cocktail, craft beer, or wine by the glass. “The Miami Vice slushy and a warm day can’t be beat,” advises Amick. A new addition, the outdoor space was previously a parking lot until Amick transformed it into a hedged outdoor green space, complete with a Southern-style gazebo bar and cozy firepits. “The BeltLine is like beachfront real estate,” says Amick. “We just needed more of an inviting way to connect our structure to the BeltLine trail behind our property, so we converted the former parking lot into our namesake park,” says Amick. Connecting the park to the two-story structure, a tunnel runs under a shared easement, leading to the charming lower-level covered patio. Beyond the patio, venture into the vintage gaming parlor with hardwood, exposed brick, and a bevy of exciting games including Skee-Ball, darts, shuffleboard, and classic board games. “People work so hard in their day-

At Painted Park, it’s about more than just dining and drinks. “There are not many places where you can go and just be a kid again,” says Amick. “It’s for the inner child.” paintedparkatl.com

About the Kitchen Nestled within a 105-year-old Ansley Park home, this kitchen reimagines tradition by blending timeless design principles with contemporary artistry. Designed for homeowners who treasure large-scale cooking and entertaining, this space addresses the challenges of its historic footprint with ingenuity and flair. By reclaiming space through the removal of a spiral staircase, the design creates room for a sophisticated “back kitchen and pantry,” while a striking trapezoid-shaped island seamlessly integrates seating at the island and allows for a cozy dining area. A thoughtful mix of Sassafras wood and sleek black Fenix Nanotech cabinets gracefully delineates the front and back kitchens, keeping the bustle of entertaining tucked neatly out of sight. Colorful, heated terrazzo floors not only exude modern charm but also provide warmth for the household’s four-legged companions. Accents such as Bahama Mar quartzite countertops enhance the space with their refined beauty, creating a design that is as effortless as it is captivating. This kitchen embodies a seamless balance of form and function—a true testament to the art of thoughtful design.

About the Kitchen Dove Studio is excited to showcase the stunning kitchen that Jenny Lyons designed as part of this year’s Tour of Kitchens, created in collaboration with Kim Zimmerman Interiors. Their long-standing client was ready for a fresh update, and together, we transformed their kitchen into a modern, functional space. By removing the original peninsula and reimagining the layout, we created a spacious two-island design, perfect for both daily use and entertaining. Thoughtful details, like integrated pantry doors leading to a walk-in pantry, a dedicated bar area, and two built-in refrigerators, enhance both form and function. We also included a built-in morning station to elevate the everyday experience. The updated design makes the kitchen feel more open, inviting, and well-suited to the family’s needs. We are thrilled to have brought this vision to life, creating a space that’s as beautiful as it is practical.

About the Designer Dove Studio Kitchen & Bath is a full-service design firm that engages clients from the initial consultation through installation by providing guidance that values the clients’ tastes while implementing decades of design experience. About the Kitchen This year, Bell Cabinetry was thrilled to collaborate with Jane Hollman along with Don DeLong of Sub-Zero to design his personal kitchen. About the Kitchen

COUNTERTOPS A Touch of Stone

It’s always a delight to contribute to a project for someone who spends much of their time in the kitchen. This year, we’re proud to present a kitchen that truly embodies a cook’s dream. Designed to take full advantage of the high ceilings and open layout, the space showcases stunning white oak cabinets paired with light Taj Mahal countertops. To maintain clean lines and a minimalist aesthetic, all Sub-Zero appliances are seamlessly panelized, and the ovens feature a sleek, handleless design. The spacious island offers ample room for meal preparation or rolling out dough while providing plenty of seating space for family and guests. Beyond the kitchen, we crafted a custom walnut bar with leaded antique glass panels and decorative bracketing for a touch of timeless elegance. Finally, we completed the space with a custom antique oak dining table, perfect for hosting family gatherings and creating lasting memories.

About the Kitchen This unique and earthy kitchen combines fresh, classic Atlanta elements with the charm of a country equestrian estate in the personal home of Studio Entourage designer, Jane Hollman. The large, vaulted kitchen is filled with texture and distinctive details that evoke old-world charm, including continuous white planking on the walls and ceiling, cobbled large-format bluestone pavers, and a central cupola above the island that floods the space with natural light. A striking exterior wall of Tennessee fieldstone features a beautiful arched steel window that overlooks a garden courtyard with raised garden beds and plantings. The emphasis on texture, natural materials, and curated details creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. The custom-stained wood doors flanking all four corners of the kitchen are designed to evoke the feel of horse stall doors. These doors feature specialty custom steel and brass hardware, inspired by horse blanket racks. They provide access to the scullery, mudroom, and also panel the integrated Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer. Adjoining spaces include a spacious scullery with full baking and clean-up amenities, a wine sitting room with an arched steel entrance to a temperature-controlled wine closet, a Cajun red bar featuring a specialty bourbon closet, and a large, vaulted family room.

About the Designer Jane Hollman, principal of Studio Entourage, is a well-known design professional in the Atlanta area. She and her team create many wonderful spaces with clients throughout the southeast and beyond. Jane has years of business and design experience, a background in the fine arts and is a passionate equestrian and owner of horses, as well as an avid cook and hostess for family and friends.

About the Kitchen

CABINETRY Truitt Custom Cabinets

Remodeling this kitchen meant bittersweet demolition of the well-loved design Cailin did for this family almost 30 years ago. At that time, the needs of a growing family were at the heart of the plan, but now was the hour to fully open the kitchen into the family room—a concept discussed then, yet making more sense now. Current objectives involved relocating the door to the garage for a mudroom entrance, a well-functioning laundry, a walk-in pantry, and neat wine bar. These days, gatherings have room for elbows aplenty around a spacious island while watching the big game doesn’t mean the cooks miss out on the excitement.

2025 Special Guest of Honor SCOTT MORRISON

6

HMWA 2025.indd 6

1/27/25 2:37 PM

Scott Morrison’s foray into wine began in college. Inspired by his cardiologist father, Scott began his studies at UC Davis intending to become a doctor. However, after learning of their renowned wine program, he was intrigued and decided to take an introductory wine course. Pulling that thread, he got an internship at Artesa Vineyards & Winery in 2001 where his curiosity for winemaking quickly turned into a passion. He then enrolled in the Viticulture & Enology program at UC Davis, graduating in 2004. After graduation, Scott had the privilege of working the 2004 harvest at Rudd Estate under the esteemed winemaker Charles Thomas. It was here that he first discovered that great wines are born in the vineyard. This philosophy heavily shaped his winemaking style, and vineyard walks—especially at sunrise—which remain one of his greatest joys. Eager to broaden his experience, Scott ventured to New Zealand in early 2005 to intern at South Pacific Cellars. This opportunity gave him valuable insights into winery operations, particularly in the areas of cleanliness, cellar management, and efficiency. After completing his internship and exploring the beautiful landscapes of New Zealand, he returned to California. Upon returning stateside, he was referred by Julie Guffy, who he met while interning at Rudd Estate, for a Lab Supervisor role at The Hess Collection Winery. There, he was fortunate to have worked closely with the exceptional winemaker David Guffy. Over four harvests, Scott deepened his understanding of the science behind winemaking and the delicate balance between art and technique. He was once again reminded of the vineyard’s critical role in producing exceptional wines. In 2008, Scott accepted the position of Assistant Winemaker at the esteemed Paul Hobbs Winery. During his four years there, he honed his attention to detail and deepened his knowledge of meticulous vineyard care. This experience ultimately led to his promotion as Head Winemaker at Crossbarn by Paul Hobbs, where his communication and relationship-building skills were highlighted as he learned to navigate the complexities of managing his own winery’s needs with those of a custom crush operation.

In 2013, seeking a return to Napa Valley, Scott became the Head Winemaker at William Harrison Vineyards and Winery in the Rutherford AVA. Within a year, he was promoted to General Manager in addition to his winemaking duties. Collaborating closely with the owner and consulting winemaker, Phillip Titus, he refined his palate and gained crucial insights into the business and sales side of winemaking. This role allowed him to develop further his understanding of how all aspects of winemaking, from production to sales, must align for success. In 2016, Scott was tapped to join Jarvis Estate as Winemaker. Bringing with him more than a decade of experience at ultra-premium wineries, he was a great fit for the quality-focused and family-owned winery. Jarvis wines are exclusively produced from its hillside vineyards in Napa located about 1,000 feet above the valley floor and situated within a couple miles of the winery. Scott considers it a privilege to work exclusively with such pristine estate-grown fruit where the winemaking team fully controls the winemaking process from vine to wine. The 45,000-square-foot winery cave system, with optimal temperature and humidity, provides the perfect environment for Scott to make the world-class wines for which Jarvis is known. Following in the footsteps of the acclaimed Dimitri Tchelistcheff, who founded the Jarvis winemaking legacy, Scott draws on his diverse experiences and passion for life and winemaking to uphold Jarvis Estate’s commitment to excellence.

HIGH MUSEUM OF ART HIGHLIGHTS THINKING EYE, SEEING MIND: THE MEDFORD AND LORAINE JOHNSTON COLLECTION JANUARY 17 – MAY 25, 2025 In the mid-1970s, artist and Georgia State University professor Medford Johnston and his wife Loraine began collecting works by artists who were in the vanguard of contemporary art in the late 1960s and 1970s. Although they acquired several paintings and objects when they first began collecting, they quickly narrowed their focus to drawings, primarily by artists working on the frontlines of abstraction in the mid-1960s during a time of great innovation and experimentation. Today, they hold one of the finest collections of postwar American drawings and related objects of its kind, now numbering more than eighty-five works, which is promised gift to the High. This exhibition, featuring works by artists including Sol LeWitt, Brice Marden, Elizabeth Murray, Martin Puryear, Ed Ruscha, Al Taylor, Anne Truitt, Stanley Whitney, and Terry Winters, among others, will demonstrate how establishing the parameters of an art collection requires infinite patience, focus, discipline, and a keen eye.

“RYOJI IKEDA: DATA-VERSE MARCH 7 – AUGUST 10, 2025 Ryoji Ikeda (born 1966, Gifu, Japan; active Paris and Kyoto) is one of the world’s leading composers and media artists. The High will present the U.S. debut of “data-verse,” Ikeda’s trilogy of monumental, immersive light and sound installations that represents more than two decades of research by the artist and reflects upon the progressive digitalization of an integrated global society. The exhibition will also premiere new work alongside existing works, including “data gram,” a series of 18 monitors that take apart, analyze, and recombine information in “data-verse.” Ikeda’s immersive video projections, which will be presented floor-to-ceiling onto the walls of the museum’s largest exhibition space, feature visualizations of data extracted from mathematical theories and the study of quantum physics. His more recent work, including “data-verse,” incorporates open-source imagery from institutions such as NASA, CERN, and the Human Genome Project. Ikeda produced “data-verse” in three “chapters,” transforming the open-sourced data sets through self-written programs to create the works’ visual output, which is then synchronized and composed in arrangement with an electronic score. Together, the music, video projections, and the museum’s architecture become a dynamically balanced, self-contained whole. Ikeda’s work immerses the audience in a seemingly endless flow of data and explores the macroscopic depths of the universe and our relationship to it. This exhibition is organized by the High Museum of Art, Atlanta.

“KIM CHONG HAK, PAINTER OF SEORAKSAN” APRIL 11 – NOVEMBER 2, 2025 The High is organizing the first American museum exhibition featuring the work of Kim Chong Hak (born 1937, Sinuiju, Korea), a master painter from South Korea popularly known as “the painter of Mount Seorak”—the highest peak in the country’s Taebaek mountain range. With more than 70 works, including new acquisitions from the High’s collection, the exhibition will span the arc of Kim’s mature career and present an aspect of Korean art in the late 20th century little known outside of South Korea. Having first worked as an abstract painter in the 1960s, Kim ultimately rejected the adoption of Western-style abstraction, which he viewed as a response to national melancholy brought on by decades of hardship. In the late 1970s, he settled in Gangwon Province, eastern South Korea, home of Mount Seorak. There he sought out an alternative artistic discourse, moving away from the monochromatic painting toward his unabashedly expressive style. He has since dedicated his life and work to interpreting the environs of Mount Seorak, developing an artistic and emotional attunement to the natural world during decades of self-imposed isolation. His work reasserts the expressive potency of mountain imagery in traditional East Asian art while also demonstrating the influence of international movements. This exhibition is organized by the High Museum of Art, Atlanta.

WHEN IT COMES TO design, restraint is a powerful tool. It can be tempting to gut everything and start anew, but often the most successful projects are handled with self-control and a light touch. Such was the case with this 5,000-square-foot, five-bedroom Buckhead residence, which dates from the late 1920s or early ’30s. The house had been well maintained throughout its history, so the current owners decided that a complete overhaul wouldn’t be necessary. With the kitchen and baths already up to snuff, the couple called on designer Phoebe Howard to work her magic on the rest of the home. “I get excited anytime I get to lay my

hands on a historic property,” says Howard. “It’s a jewel of an old house. The goal was to embrace its architecture and quirky spaces, but update it with modern silhouettes and contemporary art.” Indeed, the interiors strike a balance of old and new, featuring a combination of custom furnishings, contemporary pieces, and antiques. “The wife is an old soul who loves history and is drawn to a variety of things, including antique oil paintings,” says Howard, who incorporated several pieces of artwork and furniture from the client’s collection. Meanwhile, any additions couldn’t be too precious, as the couple has young children and dogs. “The family lives 81

hard in this house, so we were mindful of wear and tear,” she continues. Along with Howard, the design team included Hamilton Land Services Inc. (previously Carson McElheney Landscape Architecture & Design) and architect Blake Segars—who was initially brought on to reconfigure a guest bedroom, but was later called back to gut-renovate the family room and keeping room (a sitting area off the kitchen) after they were damaged by a flood. “We were given a blank palette,” recalls Segars. “We wanted to respect the home’s traditional architecture while creating something that’s a bit unexpected.” The focal point of the reimagined family room, for example, is a wall of cerused oak

cabinetry and shelving that’s dressed up with fluted paneling. To complement the new interior architecture, Howard selected streamlined furnishings in creamy tones, which are found throughout the residence. “The palette is subdued and neutral,” says Howard, who brought in texture and subtle pattern through rugs, upholstery, and wallcoverings. One of her favorite elements is the grisaille wallpaper featuring a landscape scene that extends from the foyer up to the second-floor staircase landing. “We tried to respect this historic property by giving it a timeless, classic look,” says Howard. “At the same time, we didn’t want it to feel stodgy, as these clients are young and fun. The mix of antiques and new items feels fresh and current.” See Resources, Back of Book.

NEW BEGINNINGS CAN be at once daunting and full of possibilities. For designer Lauren DeLoach’s client, a widower seeking a new home from which to fortify his spirits and embark on his next chapter, a 1930s bungalow steps from Buckhead’s Duck Pond was just the place. Though nearly a century old, the home was renovated by Norris Broyles Architects, Inc. and Adam Pollock of Castlehaven Construction under former owners to yield a contemporized cottage with alluring historical touches intact. “The house exudes vintage charm thanks to the compartmentalized layout and architectural details, like antique French beams and a granite fireplace in the formal living room, that make it feel like a jewel box,” says DeLoach. And the nearby intimate dining room is certainly a gem. “At night, it glows,” says DeLoach, due in part to string lights that shine from the adjacent, pocket-sized secret garden. The cafe lights bounce off the 19th-century Swedish chandelier and the custom antique mirrored cabinet, which houses the silver collection of the owner and his late wife, creating a

“twinkly, sparkling space,” according to DeLoach. The designer upholstered the walls in a sophisticated, muddy green fabric and trimmed it with antique brass nailheads, a technique she debuted in a showhouse that her client admired. This atmosphere of warmth and delight is woven in all directions, fostering a new start for her client that is both grounded and uplifting. In the formal living room, a medley of enchanting fabrics and trims—linen draperies, a cut velvet armchair, and skirted stools in a silk linen check—infuses a sense of welcome. “Adding layers of texture makes a room feel collected, even though we compiled the elements simultaneously,” says DeLoach. The soothing blue and green color story launches with 106

muted tones in the grasscloth-wrapped foyer for a soft, polished effect that grows more saturated and lively in the kitchen and family room. “I like to cross-reference colors to create cohesion,” says DeLoach. For example, the fawn-hued living room sofa with tape trim is a callback to the taupe foyer walls, and the show-stealing cobalt range in the updated kitchen (designed by Matthew Quinn of Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio, in collaboration with designer Judy Bentley, for previous owners) inspires the crewel medallion upholstery and damask drapes in the family room. “You know you’ve seen the color, but we’ve added a little something new to each iteration so it feels fresh yet familiar.” DeLoach’s dedication to crafting connected spaces is further

AS THE OLD SAYING goes, good things come in small packages. Jewelry, baby clothes, a perfect cup of coffee. Or, as in the case of a Buckhead new-construction home for a growing family, a Blue Celeste tile that inspired the entirety of the project. “The homeowner already had an idea, which is really nice when there is a source of inspiration and we build on that,” says designer Virginia Cheek. When the homeowners showed the sparkling sky blue marble to Cheek, together they dreamed up a basketweave rug pattern that eventually became the floor in the primary bathroom— and also Cheek’s favorite space in the home. “The color was so pretty, we went with it. We pulled from that color for the vanities, and then we layered different tones of the blue and blue-grays throughout.” To achieve the overall look the homeowners desired, Cheek mixed timeless touches—a classic empire mirror and vintage-style fixtures—with a streamlined, freestanding bathtub. “The bathroom is a nice example of what we mean when we say we were doing a transitional house,” she adds. This balancing act continues in the primary bedroom. Subtle, layered textures in the linen wallcovering, custom bedding, and sheer window panels create a relaxing retreat, while mismatched, Regency-style side tables and a white-lacquered four-poster bed add character. With construction underway at the height of pandemic-era delays, every detail of the home’s 3,800 square feet was carefully considered to maximize impact. “Keeping the house modest in size did them a lot of favors,” says architect Greg Busch. The homeowner, who lived on the same street during construction, and his father, a real estate developer, also served as the foremen. The result is a “well-thought-out house,” describes Cheek. “It has traditional elements, but is super functional for having little kids in today’s world.” The floor plan—a primary suite on the main level with three bedrooms upstairs—was familiar to Cheek,

who is also a mother of three. “We built our house and did a very similar thing, so I had that knowledge in my brain,” she says. “It’s a similar formula—the traffic flow makes a lot of sense.” The family-friendly mindset shines in the dining room, where an easy-to-clean polypropylene rug gives the appearance of sisal without the headache. Anchoring the room is the extra-wide dining table—an inherited heirloom—where the homeowners enjoy hosting. “We do a lot of family houses and the dining room is often the last priority,” says Cheek. “I love that they use the dining room, but kids eat in there, too, so we made it somewhat kid-friendly.” The prettiest details, like the knots on the pleats atop the periwinkle window panels, are placed out of reach from tiny hands, while an 18th-century chintzinspired wallpaper wraps the room like a present. “It’s very in right now, and it was nice to find something we haven’t seen all the time,” adds Cheek. Connected through arched openings, the light-filled kitchen boasts its own cheerful touches, including a contemporary Roman shade that partially covers the portrait window above the sink. “The look of the fabric feels like it’s been around for hundreds of years,” notes Cheeks. A closer look at the bar backsplash reveals a custom hydrangea mosaic tile. “We do a lot of projects for young families, and we bring in the special details, but in a quantity that makes sense,” the designer says, proving, once again, small packages are very good indeed. exciting endeavors

“A couple in San Antonio, Texas, asked me to come to their house for a week to capture their historic home, gardens, and art collection before they moved. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime job to capture this home full of all the artists I’ve studied and seen in museums around the world.”

background music

“My JBL speaker never leaves my camera bag and I love listening to Spotify to keep the mood light on shoots. Lauren Lowe, an Atlanta interior designer, has a great playlist that is a regular in our rotation of music.”

artist inspiration

“Rodney Smith’s black-and-white landscapes and portraits are sculptural, architectural, humorous, and beautiful. They remind me of my love for the darkroom in high school and college and inspire me to find the beauty in the spaces I’m fortunate to photograph.” rodneysmith.com
