propensity for conversation—and presentation. Similarly, in Ronda Carmen’s Entertaining at Home, the author and tastemaker visits the Atlanta residence of Suzanne Kasler, a consummate hostess who recommends paying as much attention to the food as to setting the stage for the occasion (page 21). In this issue, we also revisit the interiors of the 2019 81), in which polished, fashion-forward interiors mixed with warm, transitional style for the ultimate blend of comfort and luxury. If you missed visiting in person, I will tell you this was a house that men—not just women—did not want to leave, a testament to the way a well-designed, timeless house can truly marry the best of both worlds. HOME BASE

A bevy of new books are settling the shelter-industry score this season thanks to entertaining reads from architects, master hosts and designers alike Written by ANSLEY BIRD

Renewing Tradition traditional, architect Eric J. Smith’s Renewing Tradition: The Architecture of Eric J. Smith (Rizzoli, $85) offers inspiration for creating a home that is comfortable, elegant and enduring. Through personal anecdotes, lush photography and artful sketches, Smith’s remarkable projects, which include collaborations with David Easton and Steven Gambrel, come to life. rizzoliusa.com

No Place Like Home In her first book, No Place Like Home (Rizzoli, $55) Hollywood-based Madeline Stuart, an A-list interior designer, invites readers inside her meticulously layered projects, which are informed by history and craftsmanship. Stuart herself writes eloquently about her design process, walking readers through recent projects that successfully combine grace, scale, proportion and balance.

Southern Hospitality at Home The interplay of hospitality with interior design and architecture is explored in Susan Sully’s Southern Hospitality at Home: The Art of Gracious Living (Rizzoli, $45). From inviting entrances to welcoming guest rooms, and polished silver to starched linens, the Southern style expert reveals how no detail goes unattended below the Mason Dixon line, in homes ranging from the casual to the formal. rizzoliusa.com

SUZANNE KASLER fashions a presentation-perfect yet inherently relaxed French-inspired fête for Ronda Carmen’s Entertaining at Home Written by THE EDITORS 21

RondaCarman_book.indd 21

The ritual of entertaining is important to the French, says Suzanne Kasler in Entertaining at Home, and she holds the same standards: Equal attention should be paid to food and presentation.

NESTLED BETWEEN ROWS OF Peegee hydrangea trees in Atlanta interior designer Suzanne Kasler’s rear courtyard sits a long, wooden trestle table set for a leisurely lunch. “The people, the stories told, and the memories made are what make gatherings special,” remarks Kasler of the idyllic setting in which “whimsy and beauty abound.” The French-inspired fete she’s hosting is, in fact, fodder for Ronda Carmen’s just-released book, Entertaining at Home: Inspirations from Celebrated Hosts. A renowned interior designer, product designer and author, Kasler is no stranger to hosting gatherings, whether it’s a seated dinner for design-industry darlings or a crowd of community stalwarts. “I believe your house absorbs positive energy from entertaining

family and friends,” she says. For this particular occasion, Koelreuteria branches set the scene (and the palette), their pale-pink hue adding a grace note to each place setting. For centerpieces, Kasler suggests “placing objects together, en masse” to magnify their visual impact; here, Pink Modial and Quicksand roses spill out of miniature Louis Vuitton trunks collected from her travels for a bespoke look. Kasler’s entertaining advice: pay equal attention to the food and the presentation. To make your house party-ready, keep linens cleaned and pressed, and don’t skimp on the details. It’s happy moments like fragrant guest soaps (she loves Savon de Marseille Extra Pur Coton) and silver trays at the bar that convey thought and care.

Veteran hosts from Suzanne Kasler and Danielle Rollins to Julia Reed reveal their style secrets to author and tastemaker Ronda Carmen in Entertaining at Home: Inspirations from Celebrated Hosts (Rizzoli, $45), releasing this month. From easy-tomaster recipes and killer playlists to advice on stocking the pantry (or butler’s pantry), it’s the new essential new guide to entertaining, from the everyday to festive fêtes.

A CONVERSATION WITH …

TIMOTHY CORRIGAN

In his fresh book, The New Elegance, Timothy Corrigan—the master of grandeur and king of glamour—discusses how to embrace elegant design that isn’t just performative, but truly livable, a guiding philosophy that radiates through every aspect of his business, including new collections with Perennials Fabrics and Schumacher Written by ANNA LOGAN ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES: The New Elegance teaches so many lessons about design, from scale to the use of drama. How did you narrow down the subject matter? TIMOTHY CORRIGAN: I wanted this to be a little different from so many design books, which just show photos of beautiful rooms. I selected 11 different subjects— ranging from major issues such as scale, proportion and symmetry— that serve as the building blocks for any good design, and then advance on to the more decorative aspects such as the importance of layering and how to use art and mirrors. 26

AH&L: How do you strike a balance between elegance and livability? TIMOTHY CORRIGAN: Livability and comfort are synonymous; comfort is not antithetical to elegance, but rather its support and backbone. No one can feel truly elegant if they don’t feel at ease. Creating a sense of security is one of the underlying roots of all my designs. Today, more than ever, there is no need to sacrifice elegance for livability with all of the wonderful performance fabrics on the market. That is why I am especially excited about my new fabric and rug collection for Perennials.

AH&L: The Perennials collection is gorgeous. How did the idea of livable elegance inspire it? TIMOTHY CORRIGAN: I have long been a huge fan of Perennials. They really led the way in transforming traditional outdoor fabrics into the kind of gorgeous performance fabrics that absolutely beg to be used indoors. My new collection was really designed with the Southern style of design in mind. It has the kind of clear, fresh colors that are favorites in the South. The motifs are a bit of a departure for the Perennials brand because it includes flowers, chinoiserie and damask patterns. The new rugs in my

collection include a fresh take on a traditional oriental rug, a French parterre garden and a Matisselike drawing. AH&L: What intrigues you most about the Southern approach to elegance? TIMOTHY CORRIGAN: I think that more than just about any other region in the country, Southern style treasures the nature of beautiful interior design. I love that Southern style has such respect for classicism, beauty and timelessness. To me, Southern style is all about warmth, graciousness and hospitality—all of which is perfectly in line with my design philosophy of comfortable elegance.

Internationally celebrated designer Timothy Corrigan balances elegance and comfort in his freshest release, The New Elegance: Stylish, Comfortable Rooms for Today (Rizzoli, $60). Through eleven diverse projects, Corrigan, with Michael Boodro, interweaves these two principles with elements of what he believes to be the foundation of successful decoration and design. The book offers readers an abundance of easy-to-understand advice on creating a home that is as comfortable as it is livable.

Around town with

Naomi Von Habersham EVER SINCE I WAS A CHILD, fall has been my favorite of the four seasons. It’s not that the other seasons are shabby, but nothing beats the excitement of autumn’s arrival. It’s a time when everyone gets back into the swing of things, professionally and socially, after having been scattered hither and yon over the summer. Fall means saying goodbye to those wrinkled linen pants and tired T-shirts and welcoming back cashmere and wool. It also marks a return to the indoors, cozy decor and comfort food. Hello, potatoes au gratin. As soon as Labor Day rolls around, I promptly switch out my closet from summer clothes to fall and winter ones. Never mind the fact that September can be Atlanta’s hottest month of the year, and sweater weather never really arrives until late October. As far as I’m concerned, that first Monday in September signifies the start of the fall season, whether the temperatures cooperate or not. I might feel faint wearing that wool Loro Piana jacket in 70-degree temperatures, but at least I’ll look chic as I swoon. I’m less rigid when it comes to the start date of reintroducing rich food into my diet, which is prompted by the weather and not the calendar. The first day the temperature drops below 60 degrees, I’m off to the grocery store to get the ingredients to make Bill Blass’ famous meatloaf recipe. A word of warning: After months of light summer fare, a meatloaf made from three different kinds of ground meat might come as a shock to the system, but take a few bites, and you’ll quickly remember what bliss cold-weather food really is. And finally, after spending most of the summer outdoors, I look forward to cocooning inside my home. For me, that means bringing out the comfy throws and duvets from storage and rotating my home’s color palette from light and bright to deep and dramatic. Okay, so the reality may be that summer is hanging on and the weather is sweltering, but, in my mind, cool, crisp fall has already arrived.

COASTAL EASE

LAPEER SEAFOOD MARKET brings breezy style to Alpharetta City Center Written by CLAIRE RUHLIN Photographed by DAVID CHRISTENSEN LIGHT AND FRESH are the names of the game at Alpharetta’s Lapeer Seafood Market, evident in both the 3,000-square-foot restaurant’s airy, coastal-inspired interiors and its hyperseasonal menu of seafood and locally sourced produce. “We wanted to create something very clean and elegant, but also a place where people could imagine themselves relaxing and spending an afternoon,” says Maven Restaurant Group co-owner Louis Soon, who helms Lapeer alongside Culinary Director Andy Long. Indeed, designed by Curious Yellow Design, the restaurant is equal parts chic and laid-back. Fifteen-foot ceilings, white slat walls, brass finishes and abundant greenery echo the crisp, effortless elegance of East Coast beach towns such as Montauk, New York. A temperature-controlled, 840-square-foot patio overlooks the Alpharetta City Center, its glass walls and ceilings designed to create a greenhouse feel. Matching the intentionally designed interiors is Lapeer’s frequently changing menu, which is comprised of always-fresh seafood and produce sourced from Georgia farms. Expect wild-caught fish and shrimp, a mix of raw-bar classics such as oysters and crudo, as well family-style shared plates and modern seafood-forward dishes (think spaghetti with Sapelo Island clams and “tuna cubes” with puffed quinoa). The beverage program highlights craft cocktails and more than 100 varieties of mezcal—available in 1- or 2-ounce pours. lapeerseafoodmarket.com

ABOUT SERENBE

“A neighborhood with fresh food and fresh air that makes well-being as natural as nature itself.” Serenbe is pioneering a new community model connected to nature on the edge of Atlanta. A neighborhood with fresh food and fresh air that makes wellbeing as natural as nature itself. A community where people live, work, learn and play in celebration of life’s beauty. Where connections between people, nature and the arts are nourished. Serenbe is set among acres of preserved forests and meadows with miles of nature trails connecting homes, restaurants, arts and businesses. Serenbe’s architectural planning sets a new standard for community living and engagement by remembering the past. Each of the neighborhoods have complementary commercial centers focused on the elements of a well-lived life: arts for inspiration, agriculture for nourishment, health for wellbeing and education for awareness. 18

Year-round cultural events include outdoor theatre from Serenbe Playhouse, culinary workshops and festivals, music events, films and lectures, boutique shopping, art galleries, a spa and trail riding, plus a robust artist residency program featuring open studios, performances and talks. Fresh food is another of Serenbe’s natural assets, with a 25-acre organic farm, seasonal Saturday Farmer’s Market, thriving CSA program and edible landscaping, including blueberry bushes and fig trees along paths and sidewalks. Serenbe is a place where you can come for the farmer’s market, enjoy a long weekend at the Inn or stay for a lifetime.

SERENBE MASTER PLAN

A LETTER FROM

SERENBE’S FOUNDERS

If you want to change the world, start in your own backyard. We discovered the property now known as Serenbe on a weekend outing to introduce our children to the Georgia countryside in 1991. Over the course of the next three years, we found that our time on the weekends and time together as family, brought us peace and serenity. So in 1994 we moved to the farm full time and stepped off the insatiable treadmill of life. In 2000 we recognized the need to protect the woods and land that had become our home. That journey has led us to become placemakers, where we are rediscovering what it means to build community and create place, to think about life as a piece of art where we can bring beauty to the small moments in life. It has always been extremely important to our family to celebrate the arts. From the whimsical lamp posts in the Selborne neighborhood to the site-speciďŹ c theatre of Serenbe Playhouse, our goal is to integrate the arts into every aspect of life. We are excited to invite you to visit the 2019 Serenbe Designer Showhouse.

ART FARM DIRECTOR Megan Schaeffer is the Art Farm Director. After receiving a B.A. in Arts Management from the College of Charleston, Schaeffer completed the Sotheby’s Institute of Fine Art intensive program on Gallery Management and Curatorial Studies. She was a founding team-member of the Charleston, SC, chapter of Creative Mornings, a monthly breakfast lecture series focusing on leaders in the creative community. Most recently, Schaeffer was the Artist Liaison & Art Resource Coordinator for a prominent Atlanta art consulting firm. Since moving to Atlanta in 2015, she has worked with arts publication ArtsATL on its programming and sponsorship, serves on the advisory board of ArtsNOW, and works on independent curatorial projects. GREAT ROOM | PHOEBE HOWARD A soaring space boasting a beamed ceiling and a set of statuesque windows surrounded by stone, the great room presents the most robust interior architecture in the house. To make the room’s size feel less imposing, designer Phoebe Howard visually lowered the height of the walls—and made the space feel cozy—by applying painted wood paneling halfway up three walls, a finish which sets a modern tone and establishes the room’s soft color palette. Large-scale furniture, such as a pair of Formations Olympia cabinets flanking the fireplace, an oversize Gregorious Pineo cocktail table and a custom-designed ottoman, stand up to the room’s height without appearing bulky thanks to their bleached tones. And in an effort to please both sexes, Howard balanced the subtly masculine plaid drapery with a pair of sofas covered in her favorite floral chintz, Cowtan & Tout’s feminine “Rose & Hydrangea” in platinum and teak. —Jennifer Boles 84

SALON | JONATHAN SAVAGE Art and objects are the focus of this high-contrast room, which designer Jonathan Savage has christened “Savage Salon.” The room’s neutral walls and black, cream and gray color palette provide a clean backdrop for a curated selection of art, including Atlanta artist Joseph Guay’s black-and-white photo of a swan and his resin piece, titled “Bullet,” which hangs above the fireplace, as well as the carefully chosen assortment of objects that adhere strictly to the room’s color scheme. Even the furniture has an artistic bent to it, especially the octagonal table by Ironware International, which was designed by Savage and inspired by the work of artist Diego Giacometti, and a black cabinet with mirrored insets by Joanne Westwater. Because this room is intended for reading and napping, sleek-yet-comfortable upholstery—such as the pair of Julian Chichester chairs accented with embroidered flies and generous Zimmer+Rohde custom drapery—instills a layer of softness. —Jennifer Boles 89

ENTRY AND FOYER | BETH WEBB AND TRISTAN HARSTAN Having chosen the entry and foyer because it is the first and last space one sees when visiting the home, Beth Webb and Tristan Harstan sought to make a lasting impression with an inspired blend of periods and styles. Selecting a pair of giltframed wallpaper panels by de Gournay as their starting point, the designers updated the 18th-century chinoiserie-style pattern by having it custom-colored in monochromatic tones, keying them to the burnished hue of de Gournay’s India Tea paper, which was applied to the room’s walls. In sharp contrast to the papers’ delicacy are Iatesta Studio’s Monolith table, Layne upholstered benches and Venetian chandelier, all available through Ainsworth-Noah, which lend the space a contemporary air thanks to their clean lines and sturdy scale. Rounding out the style-spanning mix are a few time-honored accents, including a classic Louis XVI oval-back chair and an Oushak rug from Keivan Woven Arts. —Jennifer Boles FRAMED CHINOISERIE PANELS AND INDIA TEA WALLCOVERING De Gournay through Ainsworth-Noah FOYER TABLE, UPHOLSTERED BENCHES & CHANDLIER Iatesta Studio through Ainsworth-Noah OUSHAK RUG Keivan Woven Arts ACRYLIC TRAY Allan Knight through Ainsworth-Noah BOOKS Bungalow Classic FRONT DOOR Scardino Doors FLOORS Insidesign PLASTER CEILING Struttura

DINING ROOM | ROBERT BROWN Having decorated his previous Southeastern Designer Showhouse room with a woman in mind, Robert Brown took a different tact for this year’s showhouse, selecting a masculine scheme for the dining room that encompassed the designer’s own stylistic preferences, including his signature color, gray. The star of the space is a customdesigned de Gournay wallpaper, whose very modern design of silk organza cutouts layered against a tarnished silver-leaf background reflects Brown’s fondness for abstract art, which is further demonstrated by two carved wood sculptures by artist Kimo Minton. Known for mixing contemporary furniture with mid-century modern and even an antique or two, Brown paired a Thomas Pheasant for Baker dining table, customized in a piano-black lacquer finish, with two different styles of vintage chairs: a set of circa1960s Stewart MacDougall Klismos chairs, which have their original leather seats, and a set of ’70s-era Karl Springer chairs upholstered in Ultrasuede. —Jennifer Boles 95

KITCHEN, BREAKFAST ROOM AND BUTLER’S PANTRY | YVONNE MCFADDEN Inspired by the existing 1920s stone structures found on the property prior to construction, designer Yvonne McFadden—who worked in tandem with the builder on all interior selections and architecture for the Showhouse—knew she wanted to incorporate these elements into the residence’s public spaces to create a link between the property’s past and present. In the kitchen, open shelving placed in front of the stone provides a warm, anchoring backdrop, while an oversize, marble-topped island with custom steel brackets (a detail borrowed from the butler’s pantry shelving) offers plenty of storage and counter space for entertaining. In the Butler’s Pantry, stacked handmade tile from Renaissance Tile & Bath create a chic counterpoint to wood shelving, while a mix of open and closed cabinetry by Morgan Creek Cabinetry throughout the open spaces fosters a cohesive, casual-but-refined aesthetic. Completing her vision for a lived-in, luxe look are the breakfast room’s set of antique Spanish chairs, whose patina and ruggedness are the perfect contrast to the strong, modern lines of the Jonathan Browning fixture above. 97

SCREENED PORCH | TISH MILLS KIRK Guided by a Southern fondness for year-round outdoor living, designer Tish Mills Kirk treated the home’s porch as an extension of the adjacent kitchen by furnishing it with both indoor and outdoor pieces to create an alfresco keeping room. Outdoor-friendly furniture sourced from Kolo Collection, including Royal Botania’s Zenhit teak sofa and chairs and a set of jade-colored Cirql chairs by Dedon, are joined by accessories traditionally found indoors, such as a T.D. Frake floor lamp and Mulligan’s two-tier Prairie chandelier from Holland MacRae and Moattar, Ltd.’s overdyed rug, whose emerald tones echo the surrounding trees. Redefining the notion of a screened porch, thanks to a series of motorized, retractable screens, Mills Kirk opted to punctuate the space with Style Library sheers from Grizzel & Mann, which act like walls without blocking views or natural light. The space’s crowning touch is a Brown Jordan firepit, meant to encourage outdoor lounging even on chilly nights. —Jennifer Boles 101

OUTDOOR OASIS

MAIN LEVEL TERRACE ERIN GATES DESIGN FOR FRONTGATE From sipping coffee in the morning to hosting festive fêtes in the evening, acclaimed decorator and author Erin Gates knows how to get the most mileage from a space. “The terrace serves a variety of needs, from small gatherings in individual areas to a larger party spanning the entire balcony,” says Gates about designing the multifaceted space. “It’s important to treat outdoor spaces with as much thoughtfulness as indoor ones.” Gates partnered with Frontgate to create the blue-and-white hued paradise that’s equal parts chic and durable, but also lets its hair down, most notably with the Frontgate dining table for eight that transforms into a high-spirited Ping-Pong table. For Gates, the row of Frontgate chaise lounges are the moment she covets. “It’s such a dreamy spot to spend an afternoon in the sun with friends and some chilled white wine. It really just screams ‘me time’—we all need a bit of that.” —Jeanne Lyons Davis ALL FURNISHINGS &ACCESSORIES Frontgate WINDOWS Windsor Windows & Doors SCREEN PANELS Screens of Georgia GAS LANTERN Bevelo PAVERS Hartstone

MASTER BEDROOM | HUFF-DEWBERRY, INC. Coining their master bedroom scheme “Montecito meets English Manor House,” designers Will Huff and Heather Dewberry married relaxed, California-style living with classic English style. Anglo accents include wheel-back chairs, a George III serpentine server and a bed canopy that is reminiscent of English country house bedrooms but made fresh by its tailored valance and fabric: “Ellsworth,” a custom-designed damask print from Peter Fasano, whose blue-and-white fabrics and striped wallpaper appear throughout the room. Echoing the room’s breezy color palette is the blue-and-white French Aptware, sourced from Heather Cook Antiques and displayed on one wall, while natural elements, such as rattan window shades and a bamboo bed, evoke a California feel according to the designers, who found additional inspiration closer to home. Intrigued by the property’s history as a hunting camp, the duo sought to bolster the room’s connection to the outdoors by adding landscape paintings and an antique wooden stag head to the room. —Jennifer Boles 107

MASTER BATHROOM | STEFAN ALEXANDER While mainstream bathroom designs can look similarly sterile, decorator Stefan Alexander of Peter Block Architects and Stefan Alexander Interiors went against the monotonous grain and crafted a dreamy retreat that’s for living and bathing. “My inspiration was Pauline de Rothschild’s home, Chateau Mouton—I’ve always loved her ability to treat any room, no matter the function, as a fabulous and curated space,” shares Alexander. “Her bathroom could have been the living room … I fell in love with treating a room that’s normally so stark, with warmth and art.” When outfitting the master bathroom, the elegant Nick Burchell’s portrait above the tub and antiques, like the French secretary and mirrors, helped juxtapose the hardworking materials. “The balance of modernity and antiques really help make a wonderful and layered space,” he shares. “After all, a bathroom should be a room where you happen to bathe—so why not decorate it like a living room or private retreat?” —Jeanne Lyons Davis 109

MASTER CLOSET | BRITTANY CASON JOHNSTON You know it’s not going to be your run-of-the-mill master closet when it boasts 14-foot ceilings, unrivaled lake views and a glamorous design by Brittany Cason Johnston of Brittany Cason Interior Design. The elevated dressing room is steeped in luxury by mixing an all-star cast of materials: sculptural furnishings, color palette anchored in cobalt, chartreuse and lavender, metal accents and head-to-toe textures. The runaway star of the space is the handsome dressing table that’s draped in Jim Thompson fabric and Samuel & Sons knot fringe passementerie. “These Regency Modern-inspired details fuse together and create a space that is opulent yet serene and comfortable,” shares Brittany. “As this is a private retreat, items signifying the couple’s personal aesthetic were added, like collected antique perfume bottles, custom monogrammed paper suite by Kat McCall Papers and modern art by Susan Harris Johnston. All combine to comfort, embrace and inspire the owners on a daily basis.” —Jeanne Lyons Davis 110

AT YOUR LEISURE

MASTER VESTIBULE AND OWNER’S VERANDA HUFF HARRINGTON DESIGN Interior and fine art authorities Ann Huff and Meg Harrington of Huff Harrington Design want to share a big little secret: Art can (and should!) go everywhere. When they designed the private veranda and vestibule off the master suite, the gallerists embodied the spaces with their signature style of mixing storied antiques, like a silver Louis Philippe mirror and a 19th-century Louis Philippe commode, with elegant upholstery, textiles and—of course—fine art. The elegant combo results in a redefined space that spares the usual tropes of outdoor living. “No wicker here!” jokes the duo. “We loved the concept of upholstery outside (thank you, indoor/outdoor fabrics) along with pieces you might see in an interior living space. Art (like the oils on canvas by Debora Stewart) all add up to a chic, but infinitely usable, room.”—Jeanne Lyons Davis FURNITURE, ACCESSORIES AND ART Huff Harrington Home WINDOWS Windsor Windows & Doors

ARTFULLY GRAND

MAIN STAIR HALL AND MAIN STAIR LANDINGS SANDE BECK DESIGN After previewing the handsome house plans and fine finishes, including a black iron chandelier and sconces, shiplap walls and painted black ceiling, designer Sande Beck was instantly inspired by the warm and inviting palette. “Knowing the stairwell would be used daily and frequently, we envisioned the upstairs landing to be comfortable and pretty, the window landing to be a place to sit and look outside and the main landing to have a spot for keys, trinkets, schoolbooks, etc.” To keep the spaces cohesive, Beck wove the standout peacock blue color throughout the spaces, from the rich Schumacher velvets to the larger-than-life painting by Joseph Adolphe. Art continues its reign up the staircase, where six beautiful paintings by artist Elena Zolotnitsky from Pryor Fine Art hold court. “Our goal was handsome, warm, beautiful and, most of all, inviting. Using an eclectic mix of textures, periods and styles, we tell a story.” —Jeanne Lyons Davis RUGS Moattar, Ltd. SPRING FORWARD

UPSTAIRS GALLERY, OFFICE, LAUNDRY, SIDE STAIR HALL | STEPHANIE JARVIS When it came to connecting the long corridor’s gallery and office, vestibule and laundry room, decorator Stephanie Jarvis had a spring in her step—literally. “The showhouse theme of ‘Spring’ sparked the inspiration. I love that transition between seasons, where the starkness of winter is punctuated by strong bursts of spring color,” shares Jarvis. Her idea came to life first in the stairwell and study, where she incorporated mineral greens, grays and charcoal colors with a punch of citron yellow, including the magnificent tree drawings by Richard Bowers, photographs of decayed architecture by Hector Sanchez and antiques from Atlanta antiques gallery Parc Monceau. The long hall and vestibule embodied springtime with the likes of a butterfly print and coral, green and white colorways. But the tour de force is the vestibule’s attention-grabbing earthy green wallpaper by Faye Bell of Atlanta Artist Collective. “I adore a memorable wallpaper, especially in small spaces,” she shares. “The ink drawings by Russian artist Slava Roubanov were the icing on the cake.” —Jeanne Lyons Davis 116

UPSTAIRS BEDROOM AND BATH | HONEY COLLINS A native Atlantan now living in Boston, Honey Collins saw the showhouse as an opportunity to return to her design roots and pay tribute to her mother and design mentor, the late Atlanta designer Susan Wilcox. Working primarily with Travis & Company and Parc Monceau, Collins furnished an upstairs bedroom and bath with a mix of modern elements and classic pieces. Papered in a Studio E wallcovering that mimics the look of Venetian plaster, the soothing green-and-cream bedroom features a pair of antique fauteuils covered in an abstract-patterned fabric by Porter Teleo, while nearby, a Billy Baldwin Studio Turkish ottoman sports a Jane Shelton animal-print fabric. The canopy bed, dressed in tailored bed hangings and Peacock Alley linens, extends the room’s quietly modern feel, as do the adjoining bathroom’s neutral tones and clean-lined fixtures. Having applied the design skills learned from her mother, Collins believes Wilcox would have loved this room. –Jennifer Boles WALLPAPER Studio E through Travis & Co. SUMPTUOUS SPACE

BEDROOM | TRACERY INTERIORS When scheming the design behind the elegant bedroom, Paige Schnell and her team at Tracery Interiors started with color, specifically a palette mixing rose quartz, black, taupe and, most notably, teal, as seen in the showstopping, oversize upholstered headboard. “The headboard fabric from Romo and accent pillow in Cowtan & Tout really anchored our vision for the room,” shares Schnell. Two rose-quartz chairs by Lee Industries are a favorite by the designer, creating a chic yet cozy corner in the sumptuous space. When designing a lavish retreat, the designer notes that while beauty is pivotal, it also needs to be comfortable. “Splurging on linens (like Peacock Alley, shown here) makes any master bedroom feel luxurious.”—Jeanne Lyons Davis

SOUTHERN COMFORT

BATHROOM BY DAVID CHRISTENSEN

MASTER BEDROOM | ASHLEY GILBREATH After an inspiring image of a historic Louisiana bedroom cast a spell over designer Ashley Gilbreath, she had no choice but to create an equally enchanting room that paid homage to the storied space. Gilbreath commissioned an heirloom-inspired, four-poster bed to set the scene. “The bed is masculine in its presence but feminine in the curves,” she shares. “Everything in this room began with this bed.” Gilbreath wanted the space to feel comfortable while garnering a great sense of history, so she sourced one-of-a-kind antiques, like the vintage settee re-covered in emerald green Manuel Canovas velvet and troves of vintage books. The adjoining bathroom carries on the timeless appeal with a chic Schumacher wallpaper. While she notes that all good design should incorporate current fashions, it’s traditional spaces like this one that remain steadfast. “A great space should always have a nod to the past with a small sprinkle of trend. Timeless spaces only get better with age.” —Jeanne Lyons Davis DRAPERY PANELS Schumacher DRAPERY FABRICATION Drape 98 CHANDELIER AND DORCHESTER DOUBLE BACKPLATE SWING ARM LAMP Circa Lighting WOODEN ACCENT TABLE Holland MacRae CUSTOM DESIGNED FOUR-POSTER BED Grace Fabrications GRIDWORK ANTIQUE WING CHAIR, OAK CONSOLE AND LADDER BACK ARMCHAIR Parish Shoppe BLACK WOVEN JUTE RUG Dash & Albert FRAMED ABSTRACT ART McKenzie Dove FRAMED INK DRAWING ON HANDMADE COTTON RAG PAPER Lindsey J. UPSTAIRS BEDROOM | HOLLY HOLLINGSWORTH PHILLIPS Inspired by a Moroccan sunset, decorator Holly Hollingsworth Phillips of The English Room designed this bedroom around a Thibaut wallpaper that’s reminiscent of Morocco’s iconic horizon. As a seasoned traveler herself, Phillips incorporated found objects discovered across the world into the globetrotting space, including ethically sourced zebra ottomans from Africa and bone inlay pieces from India. “I wanted to use items that reflect my personal love of travel,” she shares. “I love unusual items that are a bit exotic and worldly.” The adjoining bathroom’s Thibaut palm wallpaper reminded Phillips of the rooftop of El Fenn luxury hotel in Marrakech—the terracotta exterior, palm trees and scenic sunset. “Both rooms are to reflect the life of the global nomad,” she shares. “But this stop is home.” —Jeanne Lyons Davis

SERENITY NOW

GROUND FLOOR POWDER AND MUDROOM | JENNIFER FERGUSON Decorator Jennifer Ferguson of Jacquelynne P. Lanham Designs put the mudroom on the pedestal it deserves with a cool, calm and collected approach to the hardworking space. Custom designed rugs by Eve and Staron and roman shades in dreamy Mark Alexander linen add subtle yet substantial texture to the soothing space. The adjacent ground floor powder room complements the nature-inspired entry with textured Phillip Jeffries wallcovering and a smattering of antique treasures. “I wanted the powder room and mudroom to feel simpatico so I scoured antiques shops (Nicholson Gallery, A. Tyner Antiques, Dixon Rye, Robuck, to name a few) for treasures and artwork,” shares Ferguson. Both spaces’ elegant (and highly functional) designs are rooted by the scenic natural views of the property. “From the material selections by the builder, Southern Gentry Homes, to the beautiful property, there is such a serenity with nature in this home.” —Jeanne Lyons Davis 128

DESIGN | BUILD | LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE A limewashed-brick estate home that overlooks a lake sitting on 5-plus acres in a brand-new three-home community in the heart of Buckhead was the site of the 2019 Southeastern Designer Showhouse. Designed by LOGAN DESIGN GROUP with Y. MCFADDEN LLC and built by SOUTHERN GENTRY HOMES, the property, which boasts historical ties, was brought firmly into the 21st century thanks to a harmonious blend of warm, masculine touches such as natural stone sourced on-site, as well as iron, natural wood and other metals. Deep roof overhangs lent a Lowcountry feel—and provided generous space for the ultimate indoor-outdoor connections—while extensive landscaping by JOE A. GAYLE & ASSOCIATES and FLORALIS GARDEN DESIGN fashioned a fresh narrative of place through mature plantings, curated containers, window boxes and an owners’ garden.

MAGICAL MEXICO

With a thriving arts scene and glorious architecture, San Miguel de Allende charms Written by CATHY WHITLOCK

WITH AN EYE TOWARD THE FUTURE and traditions deeply rooted in the past, San Miguel de Allende is a cosmopolitan city of contrasts. Its colorful Spanish architecture, charming cobblestone streets and authentic Mexican culture coupled with a thriving art and food scene and first-class hotels make it one of the most distinctive cities in the world. What it lacks in sandy beaches and turquoise waters, it makes up for in charm. San Miguel is one city that needs to be on your bucket list. A favorite of tourists and expats alike, San Francisco designers Jeffry Weisman and Andrew Fisher of Fisher Weisman call it their second home. Weisman notes, “San Miguel de Allende is a magical 16th-century Spanish Colonial village. As it has drawn increasingly affluent visitors, the shopping, 136

hotel and dining options have expanded dramatically. We have an ideal climate and an unbeatable vibe. The town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is picture-postcard pretty.” Dallas-based interior designer Michelle Nussbaumer feels the draw as well and has been coming to San Miguel for over 30 years. “I lived a long time in Rome and the sensibility of the city feels like Europe. I love the churches and cathedrals and the Mexican culture and cooking,” she says. Founded in the 16th-century, the tiny mountain town is known for its wellpreserved buildings and history is at every turn. The Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, the city’s best-known church and tallest building, provides a focal point with its towering pink spires. Located in the Plaza Principal, the neo-Gothic, 17th-century

parish church is a popular landmark and you can expect to see a number of weddings there on any given weekend. Weisman also recommends adding the Sanctuary of Atotonilco to your itinerary as it is “a hidden gem of a church often called the Sistine Chapel of Mexico.” The city offers an equal mix of culinary delights, shopping and arts and cultural events. A foodie’s paradise, be sure to sample mole, gorditas, pozole (Mexican stew), and of course, mezcal. (There are a surprising number of Italian restaurants as well). Favorites include the farm-to-table menu at The Restaurant, Hotel Matilda’s Moxi, Bovine and Fatima 7 on the rooftop of Hotel Casa Blanca 7 (designed by Fisher Weisman). For a quick Cal-Mex taco on the go, try Taco Lab located in the Doce 18 Concept House, a mix of curated shops that

feature art, fashion, design and home. Speaking of shopping, design aficionados will love Fabrica La Aurora. Housed in a former textile factory, artisans, artists and designers create a cultural center for those in search of something unique. Weisman also recommends La Calaca as it has the “best inventory of vintage Mexican textiles, ceramics and other objets,” along with Sollano 16 and the minimalist-centric shop Wabi. Nussbaumer favors the eclectic store Mixta for its local artisan collection and the boutique Talula de la Lune for their “amazing handmade boots and bags.” (It’s also a popular spot for cotton Souleiado-style tops and shirtdresses as well). The city also boasts a pair of charming hotels, each unique in their own right. The first, the 67-room Rosewood San Miguel de Allende, is located on a 13-acre property in the Centro and is reminiscent of a hacienda. Go for the stunning views from the Luna Rooftop Tapas Bar that are the best in the city. The hotel features tiered swimming pools, courtyards tailor-made for wedding receptions and Instagram-worthy architecture—think Colonial arches, colonnades, stucco and ironwork that reflect the work of the city’s artisans. If it’s a quiet, more laid-back experience you are looking for, the Hotel Amparo does not disappoint. Close to the heart of the city’s El Jardin, the Colonial-era building was once the mayor’s 18th-century residence. With only five luxury, one-of-a-kind period suites, the hotel feels more like a home as well as a haven from the hustle and bustle of the city. The husband and wife owners, Taylor and Mariana Barran de Goodall (they also own Hibiscus Linens), worked with Texas-based designer Aaron Rambo to create period-perfect rooms with an “edgy elegance” that are filled with the perfect blend of modern art and antiques. And best of all, you can unwind at the rooftop terrace and watch the sun set on the world’s most intriguing city.

SERENITY ON ST. KITTS

Park Hyatt St. Kitts honors Caribbean history and pristine beauty on the island once known as “mother colony of the West Indies” Written by ANN N. YUNGMEYER FIRST SETTLED BY THE BRITISH in 1623, St. Kitts (also known as St. Christopher) developed as a rich producer of cane sugar, and the island’s heritage is reflected in distinctive architectural features of the five-star resort, Park Hyatt St. Kitts Christophe Harbour. On the scenic Southeast Peninsula, the resort nestles against hilly terrain along the azure waters of Banana Bay. Sandcolored buildings blend into the landscape 138

in unassuming style, but don’t be fooled; sophisticated luxury awaits. The 126 guest rooms and suites all face the sea in an airy, light-filled design with natural tones and minimalist furnishings. Amenities abound, from walk-in rain showers and deep soaking tubs to plush white linens and thoughtful lighting. Premium suites, including the exquisite three-bedroom Presidential Villa, have private plunge pools and sundecks with breathtaking views.

Stories of the island are revealed in classic Kittitian and European-inspired cuisine served at the resort’s three signature restaurants: the intimate Stone Barn, Fisherman’s Village and the plantation-style Great House with Tots Rum Bar. Tropical specialties include spiny lobster, conch chowder, Johnny cake, plantain and pepper sauces. The chef also prepares a special artisan menu for Destination Dining, offered in dreamy locales such as your private terrace,

the starlit beach or the Rampart waterfall. Two glorious infinity pools beckon with shaded loungers and whispering palms, and kayaking, paddleboarding and snorkeling are offered at the beach recreation hut. Kids clamor to go to Camp Hyatt’s Island Fort, while adults may choose a sojourn at Miraval Life in Balance Spa. The wellness sanctuary emphasizes the mind-body-spirit connection with globally influenced spa therapies, fitness classes, yoga and meditation practiced at the open-air Sugar Mill, where you’ll hear doves cooing and the quiet sounds of nature. Other activities include E-biking excursions and curated journeys to rainforests and cultural sites. The concierge will arrange outings such as golf, boating or a visit to Brimstone Hill Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Guests can easily hop over to sister-island Nevis by water taxi to visit attractions such as the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, now a history museum. Park Hyatt’s idyllic setting and engaging staff make it easy to pause and feel the sea breezes—and to echo Ralph Waldo Emerson: “Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air’s salubrity.”

MANOIR HOVEY

A luxury lakeside retreat exudes quiet Southern charm, north of the border in Quebec Written by ANN N. YUNGMEYER

PERCHED ABOVE LAKE MASSAWIPPI in Quebec’s Eastern Townships, Manoir Hovey was the summer home of Atlantan Henry Atkinson (1862-1939), founder of the electric company that became Georgia Power. He built the Southern-style manor in 1900, with broad verandas and white-pillared porches inspired by George Washington’s Mount Vernon. Atkinson was among many wealthy Americans from the South enchanted by the Anglo-French culture of the Townships and drawn to the village of North Hatley to spend summers and escape the heat. Some of these Southern elite had renounced New 140

England after the Civil War and supposedly shut the blinds of their railcar while passing through “Yankee land” enroute to Canada. The manor is now a Relais & Châteaux inn, owned by the Stafford family from Quebec for the past 40 years. They have kept the ambiance warm and authentic while incorporating modern amenities. “We want to preserve the unique sense of place—Southern architecture in French Canada,” says Jason Stafford, managing director. “We’ve renovated original buildings such as the ice house, servants’ quarters, and coach house to add rooms.” All 36 guest rooms and suites are in-

dividually appointed in contemporary or classic style. The original stone fireplace and Atkinson’s book collection are featured in the library, along with some of his Early American antiques. Quebec designer John Hay recently refurbished Restaurant Le Hatley, adding an open concept with natural-toned papier-mâché wallpaper reminiscent of the native birch forests. Casual meals are served in the cozy Tap Room, while Le Hatley offers a true gastronomic experience. Menus feature ingredients from Quebec’s rivers, lakes and fields, enhanced with seasonal flavor profiles such as “tree-to-table” birch syrup and foraged wild mushrooms, herbs and sea plants. The chef describes his cuisine, “an ode to the Quebec and Canadian terroir.” But there’s also a taste of the South, with shrimp and grits served at Sunday Brunch. A glimpse into the state-of-the-art kitchen shows the meticulous preparation of each plate, artfully presented with floral and herbal accents. For an exceptional sampling, try the eight-course Discovery Menu featuring delicacies such as Quebec Bison, Gaspésian Lobster, and Maple Choux. Wines are paired by the passionate Frenchborn sommelier, who curates an impressive 800-wine collection. Open year-round, Manoir Hovey offers a variety of recreational activities from paddling, tennis and biking to snowshoeing and ice fishing in winter, as well as yoga, massage therapy and guided excursions to discover the region. It’s also a place for leisure, where Adirondack chairs beckon guests to savor the views and enjoy the exquisite English gardens—in a manner as hospitable as any Southern retreat.

PERUVIAN PANACHE Steeped in ancient history, Cusco, Peru, is vibrant inside and out Written by CLAIRE RUHLIN

ONCE CAPITAL OF THE INCA EMPIRE, Cusco, Peru, is now an enchanting city rich in both culture and history, known for its ancient remains and Spanish Colonial architecture. And when visiting what some call “the Rome of South America,” it’s best to headquarter in the center of it all. Located a brief jaunt from Cusco’s vibrant main square, the Plaza de Armas, the JW Marriott El Convento Cusco blends 21st-century luxuries with historic authenticity. Housed in a restored 16th-century convent, the boutique hotel features a combination of Incan stone and Colonial architecture. The grandeur begins from the mo142

ment you arrive; upon check-in, guests are greeted with the sight of an Incan sun comprised entirely of 76,500 glittering Swarovski crystals. Since Cusco is situated at 11,150 feet above sea level, you’ll likely need to rest after getting settled into your room. Each elegantly appointed suite comes with its own oxygen-enrichment system designed to reduce the risk of altitude sickness. Kick back with a cup of fresh tea, or take a soak in the tub with locally sourced bath salts. For sustenance, look no further than the hotel’s restaurant, Qespi, helmed by chef Jonathan Campos and offering both Peruvian classics and original creations.

When it comes time to explore, get lost in Cusco’s bustling historic district, where the best way to take in the city’s colorful buildings and ancient architecture is by foot. For a taste of local cuisine, visit the Mercado San Pedro—a busy marketplace occupied by every type of vendor (and exotic fruit) imaginable—to purchase local chocolate, pink salt, handmade goods and more. Swing by Café D’wasi Peruvian Coffee to pick up a cup (or bag) of coffee, and don’t miss out on artisanal chocolates from Chocolates La Cholita. Or perhaps you’d prefer to enjoy lunch with a view on the patio of cozy cafe La Valeriana. Of course, a trip to Cusco is never com-

plete without touring some of its natural (and manmade) wonders. Plan an excursion to Peru’s Sacred Valley of the Incas, nestled among sweeping sights of the Andes Mountains. Here, you’ll also find the salt pools of Maras, ancient, geometric salt pools that have been harvested since Incan times (guests are able to purchase bagged salt at market stalls on site). Perhaps Peru’s most widely recognized wonder is Machu Picchu, which is a threeto four-hour train ride from Cusco and not to be missed. Journey in style aboard the impossibly luxurious Belmond Hiram Bingham train, which takes its name from the explorer who rediscovered Machu Picchu. Inside its 1920s-style carriage, expect whitetablecloth dining, top-notch beverages, live entertainment and unbelievable, up close views of the Andes. At your destination, awe-inspiring grandeur awaits. An ancient Incan citadel, Machu Picchu’s allure is a product of both raw beauty and enigmatic mysticism. Back at the JW Marriott, don’t close out your trip without a guided tour of the hotel’s Incan and pre-Incan artifacts—up close evidence of the region’s deeply rooted history and incomparable culture.

FEW SIGHTS CONJURE AN immediate sense of serenity like the pristine beaches and turquoise waters of the Turks and Caicos islands. And tucked on the western end of the archipelago’s Providenciales island is the best place to soak it all in. Wymara Resort and Villas combines Caribbean calm with contemporary luxury. The 91-room resort offers access to a secluded stretch of Grace Bay Beach (you’ll never have to fight for a beach chair, as there are always as many as there are guests) and caters to visitors’ every whim with top-notch service and accommodations. Before even stepping foot into the resort’s breezy open-air lobby, guests are greeted with the sight of the resort’s 7,000-square-foot, infinity-edge swimming pool. Vacation-mode commences immediately upon check-in, when you’re provided with a cool towel and refreshing tropical beverage (rum floater optional). A perfect day begins with the complimentary breakfast spread at Wymara’s inhouse restaurant, Stelle—which also serves fresh seafood and globally influenced fare for dinner—followed by some R&R by the

pool or beach, where you’ll be able to summon drinks and food with the mere push of a button. A stop at the resort’s beachfront Pink Bar is a must; here, you’ll be able to enjoy ocean views and a menu of rosés and all-pink cocktails. If you’re renting one of Wymara’s penthouse suites—which offer immersive views thanks to panoramic windows—consider hiring a private chef for a dinner and enjoy an outdoor meal on the suite’s spacious patio. For a more casual dining experience, enjoy Japanese Robata Grilled dishes while listening to live music at beachfront restaurant Zest. Of course, it’s impossible to resist exploring the island’s crystal clear waters and postcard-worthy sights. Wymara’s catamarans, paddleboards, kayaks and snorkel equipment are free for all guests. For a halfday or daylong adventure, reserve a guided boating and snorkeling excursion with Caicos Dream Tours, where you’ll snorkel the island’s barrier reef and visit Half Moon Bay, a picture-perfect island that’s home to the Turks and Caicos Rock Iguana. For larger groups or guests in search of an ultraprivate getaway, Wymata’s new four-to-five bedroom oceanfront villas— located just a few minutes drive from the main resort—offer an exclusive experience that’s not to be missed. Each villa features elegantly appointed bedrooms, and the option for private butlers, private chefs and pre-arrival grocery orders. All rooms offer ocean views, and an outdoor pool, sunken firepit and water swim platform with ocean access help you easily make the most of your surroundings. Villa guests also have full access to the main Wymara resort, and a complimentary shuttle service is available to bring guests back and forth from each unforgettable destination.

A STEP BACK IN TIME

Just in time for 2020, The Read House Hotel in downtown Chattanooga resurrects the grandeur of the Roaring 1920s Written by GINA CHRISTMAN

IF YOU HAVEN’T CONSIDERED a getaway to Chattanooga, Tennessee in a while, it’s time to go and see what this city’s been up to. The breathtaking beauty of the Appalachian mountains and the expansive Tennessee River are reasons enough to visit, but add in Chattanooga’s history, culture, entertainment and highly acclaimed culinary scene and you’ll find a vacation close to home that feels like worlds away. Central to the Chattanooga experience is the historic Read House Hotel. Built in 1847 by Thomas Crutchfield, Sr., the glamorous “Crutchfield House” survived the Civil War (it served as a Union hospital 146

during that time) but twenty years from the date it was built, it was struck by a disastrous fire and burned to the ground. In 1871, Dr. John T. Read and his family took over the hotel, seeing it through a series of additions and renovations, but in 1925 the hotel was demolished and the present tenstory building was built. Fast-forward to today: A recently completed $28 million renovation has made this old hotel new again. From the second you arrive at the front door you’ll step back in time. Staff uniforms recall a bygone era and everyone’s jovial personality sets the tone for a throwback experience. Likewise,

servers’ outfits and decor at Read House Bar & Billiards are authentically reminiscent of the Roaring 20s, but without being too kitschy. The hotel lobby is a virtual gallery of contemporary art and photography set against warm woods and classic architectural details. A clever mix of Art-Deco and transitional furnishings brings a freshness to the place and the result is a perfect marriage between rich Old World and chic New World. Guest rooms are modern and comfortable, and the huge black-and-white-tiled bathrooms represent the elegance and glamour of interior design in the 1920s.

GETTING AROUND DOWNTOWN clockwise, from left The hotel’s side entrance, flanked by the fine dining restaurant Bridgeman’s Chophouse on one side, and the resident Starbuck’s on the other. The historic Bridgeman’s, where wet- and dry-aged beef reigns today. From the menu, Steak Tartare (the best version of this dish on the planet). A guestroom’s en suite bathroom—an elegant throwback to the 20s. opposite The hotel’s warm-but-opulent lobby appears both vintage 1920s and modern at once.

It’s super easy to get anywhere from The Read House. Nearly all of the city’s attractions are within a comfortable walkable distance from the hotel, or you can catch a ride—one of the transit stops for Chattanooga’s efficient CARTA Downtown Electric Shuttle is just steps from The Read House. The buses offer a free, fixed-route, hopon, hop-off ride, and they pick up every five minutes. For a list of all the attractions and activities in town, visit chattanoogafun.com.

Be sure to request a tour of Room 311— it’s allegedly haunted by the ghost of Annalisa Netherly, a guest who was murdered there in the 1920s. The room is designed to look as it would have back then, and the story of the murder casts an eery charm. Perhaps the flagship of the hotel is the restaurant, Bridgeman’s Chophouse. Art Deco detailing and a soundtrack from the Rat Pack era (60s music, sure, but still a perfect fit for the room) and the stage is set for a magical meal. Wet-Aged Beef in a variety of cuts, and Prime Dry Aged NY Strip and Ribeye are specialties of the house, along with classics like Oysters on the Half Shell, Chilled Seafood Tower and a succulent Pistachio and Herb Crusted New Zealand Rack of Lamb. Calling all foodies: The restaurant is superb. The city offers a very accommodating transit system, but Chattanooga is really a walking city. Plan to get your steps in and get some culture, too, by walking from The Read House to the Hunter Museum of American Art, then up a gentle hill to Bluff View Art District. Sip artisan coffees and teas at Rembrandt’s Coffee House and pop in for lunch at the famous Tony’s Pasta Shop. Before heading back, visit the celebrated two-acre River Gallery Sculpture Garden which overlooks the Tennessee River. thereadhousehotel.com 147

LIFE

END NOTE

BOOK BOUND

WHILE WAITING FOR A TABLE at a Los Angeles hot spot, I noticed a first-edition Wallace Stegner behind the hostess stand display. When I offered to trade a renowned design book in exchange for the Stegner, the hostess gladly accepted—I don’t think she and Wallace had crossed paths in an English Lit class and I had an extra copy of the design book to spare. Instances such as this have contributed to my ongoing book problem: My shelves are filled and now stacks are posing as side tables. As a voracious reader, I’ve acquired books in every category: fiction, nonfiction, reference, architecture, gardening, travel, cooking, photography and books related to hobbies and interests. From the classics to humor to children’s books, there’s something for everyone. However, the single largest section is devoted to books related to my profession: antiques, art and interior design. My library spans every genre of design—from traditional to modern; from Rococo to Art Deco to Southern to American West; ranging across America, Asia, Africa and Europe. For all of the industry chatter that online content will render 152

paper obsolete, I beg to differ. Design is tactile, evocative and emotional, and in a material field, we gravitate toward a tangible medium. In actuality, books are the essence of design: The cover, the paper weight, the font, the beautiful images and the written word work together to create a comprehensive message when we open a book (or magazine) and turn the pages. Most importantly, I have called many authors friends. Having their inscribed books on my shelves is like having a part of them in my home. From my mother’s Neat Pieces, to museum curators and collectors, to revered magazine editors, to preeminent designers, architects and photographers, their books are a constant reminder of both their expertise and their friendship. Every season when a new tranche of design books hits the market, I resolve not to purchase one more. Recently, when I realized that my copy of Suzanne Kasler’s Sophisticated Simplicity was in L.A., but I was in need of the book while here in Atlanta, I ordered another one to ship overnight. Not only am I still buying design books, I’m buying double.
