Romantic Classicism YM Derazi & Peter Block: Honored Recipients of the 2011 Philip Shutze Award

3403 tuxedo road Custom Estates in Buckhead Nan Haverty knows that Shaba Derazi is unequivocally the most talented master builder. She enjoys representing his firm because of their high level of expertise of managing the process of building a client’s dream home. Nan Haverty, as a top agent in Buckhead, is now

seeing a very strong demand for expensive new construction. The biggest challenge for her clients in Buckhead is locating three to five acres that have an estate feel and an exclusive address – because Buckhead is limited in land inventory. Her favorite pieces of property to build on today are 3403 Tuxedo Road and

1950 West Paces Ferry Road. The Tuxedo Road property is located in prestigious Tuxedo Park and is almost three acres. The West Paces Ferry address is unique because it has five acres and is extremely private. When you walk this site, you can acually feel the peace and serenity that surrounds this land.

1950 west paces ferry road Romantic Classicism Renowned architect Peter Block has a disciplined approach and true understanding of classicism. Peter has travelled all over the world designing homes for his clients. He is, not only an architect, but an artist with the talent to easily create a look of restrained, yet quiet opulence. These are two of her favorite renderings, designed by Peter. Nan is passionate about Mediterranean villas. The style is

relaxed living, inspired by strong colors and natural materials, where all of the elements tie together organically. The Atlanta climate is friendly to lush palm trees and landscaping that is natural to Mediterranean homes – a genre that will never go out of style. A timeless look that will always be in demand. Buckhead has many beautiful Mediterranean homes – some of her favorites are located on Habersham, Cherokee, Tuxedo, Paces Val-

WELCOME

What I love about this year’s Bath of the Year contest winners is that the personalities and needs of the homeowners are evident in each one. These winners are not a milquetoast bunch who designed their spaces based solely upon what’s “on trend,” or whether or not it was good for resale value. Their respective designers and architects also didn’t try to box them into a certain “look”—each space was a true collaboration between client and professional. I was recently on a panel that discussed kitchen trends. In the past, we used to see so many houses where the owners had requested exactly what they had seen at their friends’ or neighbors’ homes. Whether it was a French Country or Tuscan-inspired kitchen, the idea of having a cookie-cutter version of someone else’s kitchen (or bath or living room or…) has recently, and thankfully, gone out of fashion. These days, personalization is more paramount than ever. Homeowners have realized that, much like the clothes they wear, their homes should be a reflection of themselves. Now that’s a trend I can live with. Clinton Smith Editorial Director twitter.com/clintonrsmith

STYLE THE ART OF INVENTION ARTFUL TOUCHES ARE WHAT MAKE THIS ROOM UNIQUE. “THERE’S A LOT OF SCULPTURE TO THE VANITY. IT’S NOT THE KIND OF THING YOU’D PICK UP AT A LOCAL CABINETRY SHOP,” NOTES DESIGNER KAREN FERGUSON. “THE COUNTERTOPS ARE POLISHED LIMESTONE AND DOUBLE-THICK FOR A HEAVIER LOOK. THEY FINISH OFF THE CABINETRY WITH THE CORRECT PROPORTIONS.”

22ND ANNUAL

BATH CONTEST WINNER

Morning DREAM With artful brilliance and innovation, an architect and designer create a bath that revolutionizes the daily routine, offering a sense of serenity beyond its owners’ wildest imaginations For their new master bathroom, homeowners Judith and Bahnson Stanley wanted a minimalist, sculptural space that would serve as a work of art in itself. They also requested separate spots to get ready, but vetoed the traditional bathroom layout. Harrison Design Associates proved to be the best firm for the job, tackling these design constraints with ease while keeping the look simple and serene. After associate Dawn M. Bennett laid the architectural foundation, designer Karen Ferguson devised a double-sided vanity with a bold 10-inch toe kick reveal. The resulting piece looks almost as if it is floating amid the pure white room. 16

ATLANTAHOM ES MAG.COM

To add interest to the monochromatic scheme, Ferguson employed a variety of textures. Honed stone floors keep the look grounded while semi-gloss walls and lacquered cabinetry reflect the light, giving the room an ethereal glow. In a bathroom as pared-down as this, Ferguson explains, every detail matters, which is why the finishes on all of the fixtures and hardware were carefully color-matched for consistency—some of them at custom expense. “Having to edit yourself constantly requires a lot of thought,” she says. “But if you don’t make compromises, in the end, it pays off. This space shows it.”

A CLOSER LOOK

KEEP CALM “The homeowners wanted a place where they could reflect without jarring colors and distractions from the everyday world,” notes Ferguson. “The only color in the room comes from windows. We chose to stain them so that your eye is drawn out of them, rather than to them.”

DETAILS MATTER Storage is ample but inconspicuous. A tall linen cabinet blends seamlessly into the white walls. And every accent—from the suspended pendants to the two-sided floating mirror to the cloudlike vanity to the acrylic Louis ghost chair and “womblike” Waterworks tub—reflects a less-is-more

approach, imparting an inherent sense of serenity. MATCH POINTS Because Ferguson selected Hansgrohe plumbing fixtures that only came in chrome, keeping metal finishes cohesive was a bit of a challenge. “You can’t really mix chrome with polished nickel or satin nickel in a situation like this,” Ferguson explains. “We had a custom mirror fabricated and custom light fixtures with a chrome plate, as well as custom cords, because clear cords did not look as good.” Slim, elongated chrome handles from Hafele complete the scheme.

ELEGANT ENTRY “WE KEPT THE SAME FLOORING MATERIALS ON THE SHOWER WALLS AND CEILING IN LARGE PIECES,” SAYS FERGUSON. “YOU DON’T REALLY NOTICE THAT YOU’RE PASSING FROM THE ROOM INTO THE SHOWER BECAUSE IT’S SO UNIFORM, AND PLEASING TO THE EYE.” ECO WITH AN EDGE IN MANY WAYS, THIS BATHROOM IS AS SUSTAINABLE AS IT IS FUNCTIONAL AND BEAUTIFUL. A BRAC GREY WATER RECYCLING SYSTEM FILTERS WATER FROM THE SHOWER AND SINK FOR USE IN THE TOILET, DRAMATICALLY REDUCING WATER USAGE. CREATURE COMFORTS THE GRACEFUL CURVING SHAPE OF THE FREESTANDING WATERWORKS TUB MAKES IT FEEL VERY COMFORTING FOR THE USER.

Earth ELEMENTS An accomplished bath designer devises an alluring underground retreat for a pair of health-focused and nature-attuned homeowners—even in the closest of quarters This basement bath-meets-spa was one of five bathrooms designer Jackie Naylor renovated for a pair of discriminating homeowners. Carolyn, a Pilates instructor, and Dave Gould, an investor, are both health-conscious and devoted to the natural world, so they desired a space that would be earthy, organic and therapeutic, too. The luxurious (but diminutive) retreat the designer created for them, complete with a rain shower and advanced infrared sauna, is the perfect place to wash up after workouts, or simply unwind after a long workday. Because Carolyn wanted a floor plan with a separate 20

ATLANTAHOM ES MAG.COM

water closet and ample storage, Naylor had to reorient several elements of the bath, tucking in storage space wherever possible. She even rerouted the plumbing to accommodate a new faucet for the sink—a modern design suspended from the ceiling that empties into a deep Hastings vessel. Teak pocket doors, shelving, a bench and custom vanities make this petite lavatory feel very cozy and Zen, the color of the concrete countertops perfectly matching its toasty tones. Porcelain tiles span the room to extend these warm colors on all planes, while pebble floors—another must-have for Carolyn—add an organic touch and feel great underfoot.

HOT HAVEN AN INFRARED SAUNA, BEAUTIFUL IN ITS SIMPLICITY, REQUIRES ONLY A SINGLE PLUG-IN UNIT, NEGATING THE NEED FOR A STEAM SYSTEM OR SPECIAL GRAB BARS. THE RESULT IS A COMFORTABLE AND RELAXING PLACE TO MELT AWAY THE STRESS OF THE DAY. SPACE SAVER A SMART STORAGE AREA—PARTITIONED BY TEAK POCKET DOORS AND STOCKED WITH A HAMPER AND BASKETS FOR STORING TOILETRIES—CREATES A TRANSITION BETWEEN THIS BATH’S TWO MAJOR ZONES. SAVVY & CHIC A TEAK BENCH AND TEAK SHELVING, BOTH READY-MADE FINDS FROM VIVATERRA, PROVED TO BE THE PERFECT SIZE AND SCALE FOR THE ROOM, CUTTING THE COSTS THAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN ASSOCIATED WITH CUSTOM PIECES.

A CLOSER LOOK A NATURAL FIT Designer Jackie Naylor came

highly recommended for her creative talents and, in fact, had already admired the Gould’s sophisticated taste when she visited their home during a recent Gardens for Connoisseurs Tour. Thus, they were able to easily see eye-to-eye on nearly every aspect of the design. EVERYDAY EASE The homeowners wanted a shower they would be able to use every day, and during renovations to the other baths in their home, they did. The Goulds quickly fell in love with the clever and practical plumbing fixtures, including an innovative ceilingmounted faucet from THG.

faucet in a showroom and fell in love with it. I could not wait to have that special client so that I could use it,” Naylor says. “And as soon as I showed the faucet to these homeowners, they loved it, they absolutely loved it.” GOOD HANDLING Very simple teak pulls— essentially grooves in the doorframes—are ideal additions. The hardware had to be very special, notes Naylor. “It can either make or break a bathroom, very much like a piece of jewelry. No matter how expensive the cabinetry, you can spoil the look with the wrong hardware.”

Enchanting CHAMBER

FETCHING FOCUS TRADITIONAL INTERIOR MILLWORK AND AN IMPRESSIVE BAY WINDOW ARE FRAMED BEAUTIFULLY BY CUSTOM WINDOW TREATMENTS WITH DRESSMAKER DETAILS—JUST ONE OF THIS ROOM’S TELLTALE LIZ WILLIAMS TOUCHES.

A classically inspired designer joins forces with a duo of talented architects to overhaul an awkward and outdated bath into the elegant escape of a bygone era This remodeled bath was part of a two-story addition to a Tudor-style home in Buckhead, where architects Julia Stainback and James Hess transformed a once dated, narrow bath into a private new master suite with scale and architectural detailing to match that of the existing home. The homeowners, who are avid world travelers, embarked on the project armed with an abundance of influences and inspirations. The lady of the house, who keeps a notebook of her favorite things, required a relaxing soaking tub, a private water closet, handsome cabinetry and even a few modern conveniences. For the room’s masterful finish24

ATLANTAHOM ES MAG.COM

ing details, they called upon interior designer Liz Williams. “We decided to use this ‘silver dusk’ marble on the floors, and laying it in a chevron pattern really gave it an edge,” notes Williams. But its contemporary effect is tempered by rustic ceiling beams and ornately carved antique doors. The latter, sourced at Architectural Accents and stained to coordinate with the beachy grays of the room, provide an eyecatching pathway to the master bedroom. Commanding full attention, a high-tech BainUltra tub presides within an imposing bay window, taking full advantage of the breathtaking view to the rear of the property.

A CLOSER LOOK

KEEP IT PRETTY Soft, feminine details—a Williams signature—complete the room elegantly. A classic upholstered bench serves as a chic counterpoint to the iron ceiling pendant, hand-forged table from Bradley Hughes and wrought iron sconces above the vanity, while flanged linen window treatments give the room a tailored final touch. FLAIR FOR FINERY The cabinetry boasts a custom finish by artist Judy Neukrug, and has a striated look that mimics the effect of wood grain, adding warmth and texture to the overall design. Large swaths of sleek onyx on the countertops and shower seat increase the

glamour quotient, while rectangular abovecounter sinks add modern flair and balance. THAT’S A WRAP The steel toe kick on the cabinetry may impart a chic contemporary effect, but it’s also functional with wet floors, protecting the fine cabinetry from potential water damage and making cleanup a breeze. The cool metal also picks up the tones in the faucetry and cabinetry hardware. HISTORICAL CONCEPTS Combined with rustic ceiling beams in the vaulted ceiling, elegantly carved antique doors echo the Tudor influences throughout the home and its exterior.

LUXURY KITCHEN 2011

In May, Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles teamed up with Michael Bell of Inspirations Kitchen & Bath and Liz Williams of Liz Williams Interiors to create the 2011 Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Luxury Kitchen, part of the magazine’s Luxury Living Show at Phipps Plaza. Visitors were wowed by its state-ofthe-art appliances, as well as its design that captured a fresh perspective on traditional style. “I like my designs to be soothing,” says Bell. “I always design with elegance and balance in mind. I don’t like hard-edged designs—the space should feel natural when you’re in it.” With a combination of clean lines, and finishes and materials that expressed both cool and warm tones, that soothing style was readily apparent. “The perimeter cabinets featured a metallic pearl finish that gave off a very subtle sparkle,” says Williams, “and the mahogany island had inset weathered-gray oak doors that were a clever way to break up the long piece.” For the countertops and backsplash, a Calacatta Borghini marble for the island featured a unique combination of gray and beige hues in the veining, which made it feel ‘warmer’ than pure white marble. For the cabinetry along the periphery, gray Silestone complemented the marble, but also provided contrast to the lighter cabinets. “Glass mosaic tiles gave a clean look and shimmer to the backsplash,” says Williams, “and also kept the space feeling light and bright.”

Shopping AmericasMART Editorial Director Clinton Smith shops with Stan Topol at the veritable Valhalla for designers—and tries to keep up with the fast-paced decorator

IN THE PAST SIX MONTHS, DECORATOR STAN TOPOL HAS BEEN ON SHOPPING EXCURSIONS TO LOS ANGELES, SAN FRANCISCO, NEW YORK, CONNECTICUT AND ARGENTINA. YET, ON MY VISIT WITH HIM, ALL ROADS LED TO AMERICASMART IN THE HEART OF DOWNTOWN ATLANTA. ON THIS DAY, TOPOL WAS ON THE SEARCH FOR THE PERFECT RUG AND A FEW ACCESSORIES FOR A CLIENT IN FLORIDA. ALONG THE WAY, WITH OUR BUYER’S GUIDES IN HAND, WE STUMBLED UPON OTHER FINDS, INCLUDING CASE GOODS, BELOW.

Stan Topol is one of America’s preeminent decorators. As his design notoriety has grown in stature over the years, he’s done everything from appearing on billboards for American Express to designing a residence for Elton John. In January, I joined him on a shopping excursion at AmericasMart Atlanta, the world’s single-largest home furnishings and gift marketplace. While many showrooms at the trade-only facility are open year-round, every January and July is the Atlanta International Gift & Home Furnishings Market, where tens of thousands of designers and retailers from around the globe convene to buy for their clients and stores. On my visit, I try to keep up with Topol’s pace, though I feel as if he has trained for a marathon and I’ve only prepared for a 5K. He’s a serious shopper and has a discerning eye for detail and precision. “Shopping with a critical eye, the Mart offers me 300 more sources right here in the South that I can’t find anywhere else in the States,” says Topol. “I’d have to fly to Los Angeles, New York and Chicago for the same amount of sources—and then realize I’d missed a couple of

places along the way.” I asked Topol how he’d describe “the Mart,” of which it’s commonly referred. “I don’t know how many people have been to High Point for the furniture market, but it’s like going to High Point, yet you don’t have to travel, and you can get a taste of almost everything available all under one roof. Plus, you can see it all in a day if you’re good. At High Point, you might need a week if you’ve never been before.” Beyond furniture, for which High Point is best known, the Mart also features everything else for the home, including lighting, linens, tabletop décor, outdoor furniture and more. “Two of the things that both the Mart and [the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center] offer is that you can see, touch and feel the product. You can’t do that while sitting in front of your computer. And if you want to adjust the pitch of a chair or sofa, try doing that over the Internet.” On a current project, Topol reaped the synergies that both the Mart and ADAC offer design professionals and retail buyers. “They’re a perfect complement to each other,” he says. “I’ve just ordered a less-expensive sofa from the Mart and I’m covering it in an elegant Manuel Canovas fabric from ADAC; it’s going to look like a million dollars but the best part is that it’s going to last. I might be looking for value, but service and quality have to be a part of it, too.” Spoken like a true pro.

“Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles continues to be fresh and exciting.” “In the store, I enjoy finding new products to bring to Atlanta. Our customers often comment on how the space looks different each time they come in, and the magazine is no different. Its core remains unscathed, but the content continues to change and evolve, presenting both the traditional elements in design and new trends that bring excitement, thus keeping the traditional looking current.”

Coastal Chic Outfitted head-to-toe by Interior Philosophy, a whimsical beach house dispels classic waterfront clichés

DESIGNERS JESSICA ROAN AND MANDY MAYERS, OWNERS OF INTERIOR PHILOSOPHY, OFFER A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON BEACHSIDE DECORATING IN THE LATTER’S NEW VACATION DIGS IN WATERCOLOR, FLORIDA.

46

Upon arriving at the beach house of Mandy Mayers, in Florida’s picturesque Watercolor community, it’s difficult to decide whether to first enjoy the outdoors or in. The enchanting emerald green waters are a definite draw, but it’s hard not to let the home’s air of relaxed sophistication wash over you, as well. In a departure from conventional waterfront décor, Mayers—along with Jessica Roan, friend and business partner in their successful Buckhead home furnishings shop, Interior Philosophy—took a more subtle approach to design. In lieu of oft-expected starfish and conch shells against a blue-and-white backdrop, Mayers and Roan lifted colors from the surrounding area—soft grays, blues and greens—and brought them into the space. “Just like in our shop, we are drawn to more calming colors,” Roan says. “Then we added punches of graphite grays and turquoise to give some depth and contrast.”

ATLANTAHOM ES MAG.COM

Throughout the home, a mix of touchable textures adds visual interest, from linen and sisal to burlap and bamboo, while layers of natural elements keep the subtle color scheme from falling flat. In the dining room, a chandelier made of coral commands attention while, in the adjacent hallway, a natural oak console displays antique zinc finials and a Mercury vase beneath a driftwood mirror. Shells were intentionally kept to a minimum. “There’s so much of that in the design market right now that we didn’t want to go overboard. We really took our time and selected the most sophisticated pieces,” Mayers explains. Deciding to eschew typical beach house design wasn’t a complicated choice; it was deciding what stylish items from Interior Philosophy would make the cut. Known for its fresh and breezy décor, the shop was the perfect one-stop resource for Mayers’ home. “It was great not having to trek all over town

Practical touches include sofas made of a durable linen blend, which can be taken off and cleaned of spills or smudges by Mayers’ two young children. to find the right furnishings; [they were] already in our store,” she says. But the West Palm Beach native playfully goes on to share, “Florida is in my veins, so I had to be sure to reel it in.” Enter Roan’s editing skills. “Jessica’s the practical one,” Mayers muses. “She had to remind me that I have two very young children who’ll be eating popsicles on the sofa.” “It was important that the home remained uncluttered and comfortable,” adds Roan. “After all, it’s a vacation home.”

LIFE (notebook)

Naomi von Habersham AROUND TOWN WITH

A former beau once told me that I was “too hot to handle.” Seeing that this was back before I went through menopause, I’m guessing that he was referring to my proclivity for trouble-making. But during the dog days of summer, I really am too hot to handle… as is the steering wheel, my patio chairs and my Elsa Peretti sterling silver bone cuff. Ten minutes out in the sun and that bracelet starts to sizzle. Ouch! And the humidity—so thick you can cut it with a knife—makes dining al fresco seem more like al fiasco. One of my favorite ways to stay refreshed is to spritz myself with a refrigerated can of Evian Brumisateur (I used to buy it by the truckload from King’s), but I’ve also been spending a lot of time lately taking cool, leisurely baths. By the way, do you remember when no woman worth her [bath] salt would be caught dead soaking in anything other than Vitabath Spring Green Gelée? That big white and green bottle used to be de rigueur in every woman’s bathroom. Nowadays, though, bath accessories have become a little brazen. What’s up with displaying 25 candles around the tub? Don’t tell me it’s for relaxation. I know what they’re there for. Even worse is the dusty bottle of Champagne and two flutes left “conveniently” within arm’s reach of the bathtub. Mood lighting? Bubbly amongst the bubbles? And to think that romance once meant a nice dinner at La Grotta. (It still does for me!) I’ve decided to skip this year’s Peachtree Road Race. Not that I’ve ever run it or anything. I’m usually along the sidelines drinking a Bloody Mary while wearing one of those umbrella hats. No, I’ll be heading to my hometown of Montezuma for a Fourth of July feast. There’ll be fried chicken, biscuits, field peas, pickled peaches and all the rest of the usual suspects, and every bit of it will be cooked by my brother, Brother. I like to think of him as Macon County’s answer to Chef Linton Hopkins. Summertime… and the eatin’ is easy.

The penthouse, at the Aberdeen in Vinings, was sky-high. And so were the dreams of Carole Weaks’ clients for its design. As a consultant for the condominiums, Weaks met Dr. and Dr. Finkleman when the couple was making preliminary choices for their new residence. Though they interviewed several designers to help them complete the project, the Finklemans knew C. Weaks Interiors was the perfect fit. “They felt strongly about having a clean look—that penthouse feel,” Weaks recalls. “They have an international background, they’re both professionals and they travel extensively. Their time here is their quiet time, when they fill their tanks back up. They didn’t want a lot of color or clutter—just serenity.” That played right into the designer’s understated approach for the penthouse project. “When you have those kinds of views in a high-rise, you don’t want to mess them up,” Weaks says. “You don’t want the eye concentrated in the middle of a room; you get a lot of ‘design’ by just looking out.” Because the couple brought with them little more than their art collection, Weaks was effectively starting from scratch. Still, the artwork presented a challenge in itself. “It’s from their travels, and is very stylized,” she explains. “You can’t over-decorate when you have that kind of art.” In fact, adept though she is in the art of display, Weaks was at first apprehensive about her clients’ collection. “It’s so different from what I usually hang, so I worried a little,” she admits. “I looked at [my assistant] Douglas and said ‘How are we going to hang all this art?’ But that turned out to be a defining moment. We knew we had to make it work because our ‘signature style’ is making the very best of our clients’ style.” Here, that definitive style comprises a neutral palette that lets the art stand out. Furnishings throughout are classic yet comfortable, whether the Finklemans are enjoying a quiet night at home or entertaining a crowd. “What delights me most is that they are delighted,” Weaks says. “From the beginning, they knew what they wanted; not once did they contradict themselves. They knew their taste and had very high standards. Because they are professionals, and give 100 percent, they expect the same in return. The fact that they are so pleased with the result is the highest compliment.” SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK 60

Small World

IN HER DIMINUTIVE MANHATTAN ABODE, CARTERSVILLE NATIVE LINDSEY HARPER PROVES THAT EVEN THE SMALLEST SPACE CAN LIVE LARGE HEATHER J. PAPER QUENTIN BACON

67

A testament to Harper’s love of entertaining, a chrome bar cart is everready for a spur-of-themoment cocktail party. Above it, a bulletin board is layered with notes, invitations and photos—a reflection of her life as well as her design philosophy. “It’s all about layering color and texture,” she says. opposite Harper says there are three things her home can’t be without: Color, a bar (“I like to entertain and I’m Southern, so I love china and crystal.”) and accessories (“they’re kind of like jewelry, and they show off your personality!”). Over a chest of drawers hangs a work of art that many a serious collector has inquired about. In fact, says Harper, it was a thrift store find that cost less than $100. “I am a scavenger,” she admits. “I love finding diamonds in the rough.”

68

ATLANTAHOM ES MAG.COM

Decked out in bold colors, rich textures and unpredictable patterns, the Manhattan apartment of Lindsey Harper is the embodiment of fearlessness. It’s not only engaging; it’s also a clue as to much of this designer’s success. But if you look closely, you’ll see evidence of her Georgia roots, too. “Everyone thinks it’s so comfortable, like you’re not in New York at all,” says the Cartersville native. “Southerners really live in their houses; they love to entertain.” That’s the feeling she likes to create for clients, as well. So Harper leads by example. In this 405-square-foot studio, the living and sleeping areas seamlessly combine, creating one cohesive whole. “I’ve had dinner for eight and cocktail parties for 20,” the designer says, “and there’s never the feeling that you’re entertaining in the bedroom.” That’s due in large part to the eye-catching color that guides the eye throughout the space, from the sapphire blue sofa to the red-and-white awning stripe drapery to the chocolate brown upholstered headboard. In fact, she credits much of her color aplomb to Richard Keith Langham, whom she worked for before striking out on her own in 2007. “He’s Mr. Color, and that’s something I brought with me to my own practice,” says Harper. “The first time he had me spec the color for a whole house I was petrified. But he trusted me, and that gave me a great boost of confidence.” It’s more than color, however, that defines Harper’s signature style. “I’d say it’s traditional with a twist,” she explains. “I like color, but I like to mix things up, too, with little unexpected details, by combining old and new.” That’s evident in the entry, where a vintage lamp and Foo dogs are right at home together, set against an eye-catching zigzag wall covering. “I love small spaces; you can make them fun because they are small,” the designer says. Likewise, in the living area, the blue velvet sofa (a thrift store find originally in a “terrible marigold”) is flanked by a pair of vintage chromeand-brass faux bamboo étagères and fronted by a Ming cocktail table from her own furniture line, Lamshop. Even her sleeping spot mixes it up. A chocolate satin headboard gets a feminine touch from aqua blue piping and mother-of-pearl buttons while an antique Suzani textile at the foot of the bed offers further proof that, with this designer, you can always expect the unexpected. So what’s next for Harper? “I want to expand the furniture line, and maybe do a wallpaper line, a trim collection, a boutique hotel, a book,” she surmises. “My wheels are constantly turning. And I feel like I’m just getting started.” SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK

A chocolate satin headboard, tufted with blue mother-of-pearl buttons, is one of Harper’s favorite furnishings. “I love my headboard; it’s a little larger than life,” she says. On either side of the impressive piece, spacesaving swing-arm lamps are decked out in custom shades—another item on her “must-have” list. “Lampshades make the lamp; they complete the package. And I love custom shades,” she explains.

Terrace, Edwin Lusk & David Paterson

Super-stylish in its own right, the terrace’s design stops short of overpowering the majesty of Whiteside Mountain beyond, the real focal point of the space. 73

Soft & Pretty

Living Room, Suzanne Kasler

For the living room, Suzanne Kasler chose a soothing ivory and pale blue palette—the perfect juxtaposition to the more rustic, dark-stained floors and ceiling as well as the stacked-stone fireplace. 74

Easy Elegance

Dining Room, Carole Weaks

A compilation of styles and periods of furniture gives this dining room a sense of formality without the pretense. It’s the mix of the formal and informal with the rustic and reďŹ ned that allows it to be, at once, inviting and elegant.

Soaring Style

Screened Porch, Ann Sherrill

Bringing the indoors out has long been a trend, but with draperies, a chandelier and fine art, this screened porch is on par with any fine interior space. A versatile furniture arrangement makes the room as perfect for entertaining 20 guests as for just two people reading the morning newspaper by the fire.

Wade Hampton Golf Club was the host site of “Whisper Fade,” the 2010 Cashiers Designer Showhouse. Perched on a gentle promontory near Wade Hampton’s 10th hole, the five-bedroom home featured unparalleled views of Whiteside Mountain. A project of McKee Development Construction Management Division, Whisper Fade was designed by Travis Mileti of Mountainworks, built by R. J. Ward & Company and certified through both the Earthcraft green building program and the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Star program. The showhouse, which benefits the Cashiers Historical Society, was sold on the evening of the opening night party and has since been decorated by celebrated designer Charles Faudree, who will also be participating in this year’s Cashiers Designer Showhouse next month. Alongside the room’s more formal components, antique farm elements become objets d’art in themselves, seemingly taking on the importance of sculpture. An intimate seating area allows for quiet respite and contemplation.

Master Class

Master Bedroom, Bob Brown

Showcasing select pieces from Bob Brown’s new furniture collection with MacRae and Holland & Company, the master bedroom—with its fine detailing and shapely silhouettes—evokes the touch of a tailor or couturier.

83

All In the Details

Keeping Room, Cheryl Benitez & Audrey Wood

The keeping room’s ample, comfortable seating and artful arrangement of bookcases is stylish enough, yet it’s the small details, such as the passimenterie on the curtains and the subtle pattern on the rug, that elevate this space to new heights.

Quiet & Cozy

Sitting Room, Lynn Monday

Light and airy, the sitting room is a tranquil oasis amid the home’s darker rooms. The pièce de résistance, however, is Lynn Monday’s use of nailhead trim on the walls to create a pattern that envelopes the room like a cocoon.

Prints Charming

Bedroom, Francie Hargrove

Traditional style gets an update through the use of bold floral prints against a sea of neutrals with an occassional pop of color. An inviting four-poster bed is regal, while a separate seating area is ideal for whiling away the long days of summer. SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK 84

LIFE

Bunny Williams Marcia Sherrill talks with one of the country’s favorite designers

INTERVIEW BY

MARCIA SHERRILL

WE HEAR THAT YOUR NEW COLLECTION III FOR BEELINE HOME WAS A MARKET FAVORITE AT HIGH POINT. COULD YOU NOT LEAVE PERFECT ALONE? WHAT DID YOU ADD?

I launched my first Beeline Home Collection in 2009 and just debuted Collection III at High Point. My original idea was to design pieces that I was always looking for for my projects but had a hard time finding—all those special pieces that give a room character. This collection features several new handpainted ceramic lamps, the Skol Bar, which has a Gustavian influence (I love putting a bar in the living room so everyone can help themselves), and an upholstered chair called the Bunny chair, (the original is in my New York apartment), which is super comfy and has a French ’40s feel. YOU’RE SUCH AN INSPIRATION TO SOUTHERNERS; WE LITERALLY FOLLOW YOU WITH BATED BREATH. DID YOU EVER IMAGINE THAT WOULD HAPPEN WHEN YOU WERE STARTING OUT? I am always so flattered to hear that I inspire people. I am very lucky to have had a Southern background where hospitality and manners are important, and keeping a proper house is in one’s DNA. I live in a gracious but relaxed way. I never mind a chipped cup, someone spilling a drink or a little dog hair on the sofa. Creating a wonderful house is not about being perfect; it’s about the little nicks and dents of life that give it a sense of soul. WHAT’S ONE SECRET THING ABOUT GROWING UP IN CHARLOTTESVILLE THAT NONE OF US KNOW? One of the things I loved best about growing up in Charlottesville was having a huge yard to explore and wonderful gardens. I had a little play house where I got my start as a decorator. It had two wicker chairs and a battered green army trunk filled with dress-up clothes, stuffed animals and a few dolls. I loved to pick flowers, hang fabric scraps for curtains and make my house look pretty. There was a miniature tea set and a small table, where I gave countless parties attended by family dogs, dolls, a favorite stuffed bear and my dear friend Libby Palmer. I spent many happy hours in this house and was never bored because there were endless ways to arrange and rearrange everything. TELL US ABOUT THE IN-

SCRAPBOOK-AHOLICS! Scrapbook for Living, published by Stewart, Tabori & Chang, is about all the bits and pieces that come together to make a house have personality. It is the moment in a project when the decorating is finished and “life takes over”—family treasures, books, collections, table settings, craft rooms, art studios, pets, people and the homeowner’s personality. The book has my favorite tips for organizing, making the perfect bed, living with pets, setting the table, hanging pictures and more. ARE YOU TAKING A MUCH-DESERVED VACATION THIS SUMMER? I have been traveling like mad this past year: London, Paris, Belgium, Turkey, Lebanon and all across the United States. I soak up the culture and the sights wherever I go and, of course, I shop everywhere. Home sweet home sounds great right now. My husband, John, will cook; I will set a pretty table and the dogs will be at our feet.
