Though originally beginning as an addition to the main home, it didn’t take long for architect Amanda Orr, landscape architect Missy Madden, interior designer Alissa Portman, and builder David Childers to realize this sprawling property’s potential. With an acre of open green space in the backyard, the design-build team created the ultimate oasis with several entertaining zones for the young family with three active children. A new pool house is a relaxing retreat, offering a shady respite from the otherwise sunny open yard and serving as a multiuse space for child’s play, alfresco dining, and pool storage. Orr mimicked the materials of the main house to form a connection between the two structures, but because of its location to the side of the home, the pool house is a site still to be discovered by guests. “In large estate properties, having the pool as a destination and allowing only glimpses of the space encourages you to be drawn through the outdoor spaces at a slower pace,” says Madden. “The mystery allows the area to form its own identity—linked to the home, but also able to stand on its own.” The large lawn is both tailored and architectural, yet fun and functional, says Madden. Hornbeam trees and holly were used to enforce structure and help define the landscape’s various areas, while the green hedging gave the perennials and flowering shrubs an elegant and textured backdrop. And the finishing touch? Says Madden, “Every good Southern garden needs a boxwood—or 10.”

ATLANTANS WERE overjoyed to hear that James Beard-nominated chef Jason Liang and business partner John Chen were relocating their Japanese-style concept, Brush Sushi, to Buckhead Village District. Complete with two private omakase rooms, doors to the new location opened this past September. The updated menu highlights starter dishes like their Spicy Tuna Tartare, a variety of sushi à la carte options (both Temaki and Maki), as well as a selection of signature nigiri, hot dishes, and tableside services. “Our foundation is established using traditional techniques and flavors, while creating new and ambitious ingredient combinations based off of stories and personal experiences,” says Liang. Brush

Sushi is also one of the first Japanese restaurants in Atlanta to offer dry-aged fish. The process of dry-aging enhances the fish’s natural flavors and results in a melt-in-your-mouth texture. Guests participating in an omakase experience learn more in-depth about this particular technique and take part in a dry-aging versus fresh sashimi tasting. Designed to showcase unique Japanese ingredients and complement Liang’s cuisine, the new beverage program is curated by beverage director Mona McAllen. “My approach to the cocktail menu is to craft imaginative and delicious drinks, like our signature Umami cocktail,” says McAllen. “I strive to showcase my personal favorites, such as sake,

while also presenting a product to our guests that is enticing and approachable.” Collaborating with architect John Moore, Clara Liang, chef Liang’s wife, took the restaurant’s design to new heights. From the ceiling to the velvet seating options, shapely light fixtures illuminate the green color palette. A custom wood accent wall, sleek black tiles, and an expansive bar add to the overall ambience of the space. The restaurant’s omakase rooms elevate the experience—one seating 18 guests (which also plays host to their Tuna Cutting and Sushi Making classes) and another accommodating 10. “Our smaller omakase room is a bit more intimate,” says Chen. “Most omakase experiences are a shared experience with other diners, but in our smaller room, you’re able to have exclusive time with your guests as chef Jason navigates your evening.” Exclusively called “O by Brush,” the omakase dining venture led by Liang is a must-do for all food lovers. brushatl.com

A SOFT, SOOTHING palette puts a present-day spin on this traditionally inspired home full of exquisite details. While imagining their forever family home, a couple found themselves drawn to a Tudor Revival residence in Buckhead. They reached out to the home’s architect, Frank Neely, to design an equally grand home on their plot of land just outside of Atlanta, but with a caveat: to make it light, bright, and approachable. “Traditional Tudor Revival houses tend to have a dark and heavy nature to them,

however, these clients wanted a strong connection to the outdoors, so amid the classic elements we incorporated lots of windows and just a general sense of openness,” explains Todd Pullen, who alongside Christian Reed served as associate architects of the project before Neely’s passing last year. The home’s great room best exemplifies this marriage of styles. Spanning nearly 36 feet, a series of steel window doors floods the room with natural light while grand trusses gracing the vaulted ceiling add a

SERENDIPITY—THAT’S THE only way to describe the evolution of this verdant property and the stately home that sits on it. That’s not to say it came without challenges, though, and thanks to a like-minded group of talents that included residential designer Rick Hatch of Harrison Design, interior designer Tish Mills, landscape architect John Howard, and residential builders McGarrity-Garcia, the new home blends seamlessly with the grandeur and grace of its Tuxedo Park neighbors. “This project was so incredibly collaborative,” says Mills. “We all knew that the new exterior of house had to look like it had always been there, but inside, the owners asked for more of an up-to-date look.” Two items that would remain top of mind throughout the project: applying tried-and-true materials to an interior design that lived for today, and preserving and enhancing the long-neglected garden designed by 20th-century classicist architect Philip Trammell Shutze. From the approach, the house is European in style. Thanks to its limestone exterior, slate roof, stalwart chimneys, and bifurcated stair, the facade relates well to its Georgian, Tudor, and Italian and Greek Revival neighbors. An additional wing

AFTER PURCHASING A second home in Highlands, North Carolina, interior designer Doug Weiss and his husband felt it was time to simplify their life in Atlanta and trade in their Inman Park house for a lower-maintenance condominium. “Everything we looked at was the same look; even if it was in an old building, everything was white and gray and any character had been erased,” shares Weiss. Eventually, they found their perfect match in a circa-1910 Druid Hills condo, one of five units housed in what was originally a sprawling estate. “We bought it right on the spot. It was really kismet,” says Weiss. “I love working on old homes. It’s so incredibly important to listen to the architecture because it will give you all the information you need.”
