experience that keeps the humble nature of its surroundings top of mind. “There’s not an air of pretentiousness here [VirginiaHighland]”, says Jeffers. “I love that at any given place you have a college kid watching their spending and sitting next to them is someone with a mini mansion.” With fried chicken as the only link to the restaurant’s previous tenant, the building transformed from a bright-colored carnival to a breezy Mediterranean getaway with the right touch of class. Designed by William Peace and featuring warm tones, an emerald bar top, and sophisticated booths, the local spot is suited for both special occasions and casual nights out. During the day the restaurant’s outdoor patio is a shady respite, creating an airiness that repeats itself in the light menu. Staying true to Mediterranean culture with an emphasis on communion, small bites and shareables intended to be enjoyed together pepper the menu. “We didn’t want it to be

the type of place where everyone just sits down and has their own entrée plate, so we designed it with that in mind,” says Jeffers. The core of the menu revolves around skewers ranging from lamb and chicken to shrimp. With customizable options and an eclectic mix of sauces to try, customers will embark on a unique flavor journey every time they dine at Ela. “This is a place that you could eat at two or three times a week and not need a break,” says Jeffers. Experience a twist on familiar cuisine with Yaya’s Hot Pockets and Moroccan Hot Chicken. Espresso martini lovers must try Ela’s frozenand-spiced take on the popular drink. With select wine on tap, ordering a carafe of chilled wine for the table is a must. PRIORITIZING ART AND color were the main imperatives interior designer Susan Bozeman was given when she was hired to craft a new home in the Graydon Buckhead. Bozeman, whose firm outfitted the common areas for the entire Rule Joy Trammell + Rubio-designed building, was a natural choice. She set about making the high-floor flat, which features expansive views to the east, west, and north, something special. “Since we took over well before the unit was finished, we customized everything,” says Bozeman of the finishes. Though the new condo represented a downsize from the client’s previous single-family house, Bozeman and her team made sure that the three-bedroom home felt vibrant and special—an upgrade, even. It started with serendipity: Early on, she found an antique Turkish Bor Oushak rug in an alluring combination of chartreuse, lavender, and blush that inspired the colorways for the entire home. “I wasn’t

READY TO TRANSITION into a new phase of life, Frank and Karen Boykin recently moved from their home in Ansley Park into a light-filled condo at One Museum Place in Midtown Atlanta. The condo impressively faces the architecturally rich High Museum of Art, where they are members, and they wanted their new residence to reflect its surroundings. Previously designed by Jared Hughes, the homeowners incorporated many of the designer’s selections into their new space, including custom drapery, rugs, beds, and more. From there, interior designer Steve McKenzie of McKenzie Design drew inspiration from his client’s extensive art collection as well as the museum—which is on full display from almost every window. “I wanted to let the views and the art be the heroes of the home,” says McKenzie, who personally curated artwork for every space. “The museum plays a very informative role

in the decor, as the condo’s interiors are reminiscent of what could be seen at the High.” Sculptural sofas in the living room mirror the High’s exterior light scoops crafted by Italian architect Renzo Piano, while an ebony sculpture by Kevin McLean in the dining room calls to the ever-present The Shade sculpture by Auguste Rodin that holds court on the museum property. McKenzie’s artful interpretation is immediately set in the striking elevator foyer where a metallic ombré wallcovering is anchored by a modern Lily Harrington art piece that resides above an opposing 18th-century French commode. “I love a juxtaposition of contemporary art with antique furniture,” says McKenzie. Big art moments are strategically placed throughout the condo, including a trio of abstract works placed near the dining table that feature tiny, seek-and-find birds. “Rooms should have art that sparks interesting 45
