Some cities are strongly identified with a particular style. Take, for example, New Orleans and its centuries-old love affair with all things French. But Atlanta? Well, it seems that we never met a design trend that we didn’t want to embrace. Over the years, we’ve literally been all over the map with our decorating, making stops along the way in England, France and the Mediterranean. I remember, in the 1970s, when Atlantans developed a passion for American antiques. No home in Buckhead, Ansley Park nor Druid Hills was considered properly decorated without a Federal sideboard, a Windsor chair or a bullseye mirror. Some might chalk up that decade’s fascination with Americana to the hoopla over our country’s Bicentennial but I also give credit to Atlanta’s own Deanne Levison, a noted expert on American furniture. Her former Peachtree Road storefront was the destination for blue-chip collectors shopping for bluechip antiques. By the 1980s, though, we had ventured to the land of our forebears and began to decorate our homes in the English style. We were mad for plaids and chintzes, not to mention dog paintings, Staffordshire animals and antique armoires. I got so swept up in the look that I even traveled to the UK in hopes of bringing home a British aristocrat as my next husband, but that didn’t quite work out. It’s a good thing, too, because with the advent of the 1990s Atlanta had shed its Anglophilia and turned its focus to France—more specifically, the Country French look. Provincial furniture, toiles and walls painted the color of sunflowers were all the rage. Buckhead ladies (myself included) beat a path to stores like Pierre Deux in hopes of finding that certain quelque chose for our maisons. In the last decade, we have decorated our homes to resemble Tuscan villas and even Belgian castles. What’s next? I can’t say, but knowing Atlantans, we’ll welcome it with open arms!

business was sold in 2006, at which point Castell took took a two-year sabbatical and traveled with his family. Currently, Castell consults for SCORE and is on their International Trade Counsel. He is also on the SBSC board for Forsyth County Georgia. Castell’s consulting firm, Golden Rulers, which focuses on business growth coaching, is currently working with Bell Custom Cabinetry where he helped create a full-service home center known as Inspirations Kitchen & Bath. His areas of expertise include marketing, branding, sales force hiring and contract relationships. Castel has traveled extensively throughout the world. He has also served on several boards and has been active in coaching several chess and athletic teams.

INSPIRATIONS KITCHEN & BATH Michael Bell
Michael Bell serves as vice president of Bell Custom Cabinetry and principal manager of Inspirations Kitchen & Bath design studio. After earning degrees in science at Texas A&M University and Baylor College of Medicine, Bell enjoyed a successful career as a business consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers, where he worked with Fortune 500 companies around the country. In 2003, he returned to Atlanta to join his father’s company, and together they have grown Bell Custom Cabinetry into one of the premier custom cabinetry firms in Atlanta. By combining his passion for architecture and woodworking with a strong business background, Bell has had the privilege of not only designing outstanding kitchens, baths, entertainment centers and pubs, but also working with an extremely talented group of craftsmen to produce the finest cabinetry for homes throughout Atlanta and across the Southeast. Most recently, he co-founded Inspirations Kitchen and Bath, a unique studio concept that allows designers to work with clients on selecting all of the elements for their kitchen and bath projects. During his free time, Bell enjoys the best of Atlanta with his wife Christine, daughter Emily and twin sons Carson and Chase. His hobbies include coaching his children’s sports, along with playing tennis and club soccer with friends.
Jenny is a Chattanooga native who moved to Atlanta in 2002 to complete her internship and receive her Bachelor of Science in Interior Design from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. During her internship at Interior Design Atlanta, Jenny found designing kitchens and baths were the best fit for her love of space planning and drafting. She then designed remodel projects at Elemente until their company merged with CSI Kitchen and Bath Studio in 2006. She further developed her expertise in remodeling kitchens and baths by working in design and sales. In 2010 Jenny joined Inspirations Kitchen and Bath and has been working on kitchen and bath remodel projects throughout Atlanta. She has enjoyed designing homeshow booths for the Fall and Spring homeshows. She implemented the installation of the permanent Phipps Plaza display for Inspirations and now manages the design studio at Phipps Plaza. Jenny is excited to be working with Mike Bell and Fernandez & True Interiors to create the new Luxury Living kitchen at Phipps Plaza for 2012.
Paul L. Castell Paul L. Castell is an independent business consultant based in Atlanta. He holds a B.A. in sales and marketing from Georgia State University and is fluent in French. After a series of successful stints at companies such as Ashford International, Inc., Georgia Pacific and Microsoft, Castell joined his family contracting company in 1998. He helped transform it into a thriving eight-million-dollar construction and remodeling business. Additionally, Castell started another company called Elements, A Home Design Studio. Elements was a retail turnkey interior home business with a 5,500 square-foot showroom. The 34

A French gold finish and rock crystals on the Athena Chandelier add a glamorous touch to the dining room. esigners often call uponnature
as inspiration—think poppy florals and beach-infused interiors. But rarely do they use
moody and mysterious materials such as pyrite stone and malachite as the jumping-off points for a project. Those elements, coupled with varying shades of dark green, served as the muse for designer Michel Boyd’s residence, created in collaboration with Bradley Hughes, a showroom at the Atlanta Decorative Arts Center. “I love to layer textures, patterns and colors,” says Boyd. “It’s essential in a luxury environment. If you think you’ve layered enough and need to stop, don’t stop!” Here, those layers include salon-style art walls, stunning chandeliers, Greek key motifs, a bevy of patterned and metallic wallpapers, even oft-overlooked organic touches. “Fresh flowers are always necessary,” the designer adds. “These natural elements keep the space comfortable.” Even amidst a luxurious palette like this, Boyd says that people should keep a sense of humor about design as he did in the master bedroom by juxtaposing a whimsical wallpaper against an elegant, smoky blue upholstered headboard. “I want clients to see that it’s OK,” he says, “that they can feel comfortable with taking risks.” bradley-hughes.com; smithboydinteriors.com

The Residences at W Atlanta—Downtown can best be described as cool, calm and collected. With classic contemporary furnishings
from Room & Board anchoring the light-filled aerie in the sky, interior designer Barbara Westbrook and her associate Kim Winkler juxtaposed the company’s clean-lined upholstery—at once both inviting and kick-your-feet-up comfortable—with modern art, folk art, and accessories with a sense of patina. “This space reflects someone who collets pieces they love,” says Westbrook of her imaginary client for the showhouse project. with a showhouse project, there have been instances were the talent has employed every de-
sign trick—at once. The resulting space is often an amalgamation of ideas, but without focus. For this showhouse residence, however, designer Susan Ferrier chose to tackle the givens of the space—including white walls, floor-to-ceiling windows and a challenging architectural column—and treated them as the client, devising solutions around them. Eschewing the immediate impluse to use bold paint colors to “make an impact,” Ferrier chose to spend funds on draperies and custom, large-scale art, which helped to define intimate, individual spaces within a somewhat open floorplan. The resulting spaces are personal, and pieces from R Hughes showroom imbue the rooms with a serene and calming effect. facing vistas, residence 1907 frames views of the downtown Atlanta skyline—from the Georgia Pacific building to the Georgia Dome—like a picture postcard. And, collaborating with The Mercantile—the Brookhaven home furnishings emporium that provided the majority of furniture and accessories—interior designer Amy Morris put her own stamp on the space using a colorful leitmotif, carried out on everything from rugs and accessories to fabrics and bold paint colors. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by horizontal stripes painted on the corridor walls that seem to have an invisible pull on guests, luring them further into the space. Likewise, a rich, deep turquoise color blankets the bedroom while a cocoonlike eggplant wraps the library. Only in the living room did Morris keep the walls white, not only providing a quiet backdrop for the jeweltone furnishings, gilded accessories and bold contemporary art, but also not distracting from the panoramic views. mercantileatlanta.com; amydmorris.com

signed for the High Style High Rise Home Tour. For a palette that could easily become cold and sterile, Peace found a way to make it inviting by using sinuously styled pieces from Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams throughout the residence. The designer created a series of unified spaces, envisioned as a home for a young bachelor who loves to travel and has an appreciation for fine art. Thus, featured in the home are works by by artists from Alan Avery Art Company’s roster of talent, including Louise Nevelson, Chuck Close and Harriet Leibowitz. And because “no bachelor will sacrifice comfort for the sake of style,” Peace chose pieces that combine the best of both worlds, such as MG + BW’s Davis Sofa, which features a deeper seat and wider arm, and a pair of tubular Art Deco-inspired lounge chairs. he residence designed by
Kerry Howard features views of several iconic Atlanta institutions, among them the CocaCola headquarters, CNN and the Georgia Aquarium. So, with a nod to southern hospitality,
Howard built upon the local landmarks that surround his space by incorporating a mural of Scarlett O’Hara, meant to look like it was painted on the side of a building. Using furnishings from Redefined Home Boutique, Howard created a residence envisioned as a home for a young female professional who believes less is more and likes to mix the past with modern elements. A traditional pedestal in the corner, for instance, holds a modern sculpture. In the bedroom, the shape of the bed is traditional but on either side are contemporary alabaster lamps. A magnolia-print bedspread in the bedroom also alludes to Southern style but there are plenty of pink accents throughout the residence—including a candy-colored glass chandelier—that add a decidedly feminine touch. This year’s Atlanta Symphony Associates’ Decorators’ Show House & Gardens had me weak in the knees and downright giddy. This is not your mamma’s same ol’ showhouse—and you’ve got until Mother’s Day to see it before it closes! A team of more than two dozen designers have pulled out all the stops in transforming “Knollwood” into a showplace that rivals the best of the best, including Kips Bay and Pasadena. The Philip Shutze-designed sweetheart of a Georgian Revival on Paces Ferry is a masterpiece in its own right, but Atlanta’s top talent had my pulse pounding at the front door. I am sucker for a porte cochere, so Mary Palmer Dargan had me dead in my tracks at the entrance. I tried sketching details in my stilettos but soon realize the futility, so

I clandestinely shot away on my iPhone. Why did I forget my iPad? This house requires a film crew. I was wrong in thinking that I could cover the entire house in my usual 15-minute race-walk. (When the Olympics open this summer, there should be a race in showhouse sprinting; I’d surely win the gold!) My Jimmy Choos that were comfy on the first floor were tossed in my bag as I switched to my C. Wonder ballet flats for the rest of the tour. I tried a spot of napping in Christy Dillard Kratzer and Heidi Pierce’s guest retreat—which they dubbed “worldly repose”—I think I caught some deep Zzzs before being awoken by the throngs pushing into my space. Designers James Farmer and Maggie Griffin’s butler’s pantry was my next resting spot, as I
was suffering from some serious mega-watt sensory overload after the sublime gentleman’s parlor. Jotting down a few more notes, I stumbled into the game room where I longed to relax as the crowd pushed me along. Could I not fake a fainting spell to get some rest in Courtney Giles Decker’s bedroom? Down the way at Stan Topol’s grand living room were plenty of comfy resting places from which I could sketch—er, steal— some of the legendary designer’s cool new twists on timeless design. Speaking of twisting, I think I sprained my neck ogling Kelly Hansen’s back staircase. After another respite in the tricked-out teen lounge—this is a big house!—I hoped my daughter Anabelle would turn up. In true teen-age defiance, she’s avoiding me on this tour. She’s still
worried that I may put her to work as a docent. She’d wailed earlier that I had no design decency, so we parted ways at Tish Miller’s zen-like ladies room. I do admit to some minor gasping and chest pains in Design Galleria’s kitchen, although scouring the cupboards didn’t turn up any smelling salts. Anabelle was having none of my kitchen-envy as she claims I’ve never actually set foot in a kitchen. By the time I reached Ed Castro’s garden and pool area I really, really needed a lounge chair of my very own. Although I had several bedrooms to choose from, I decided to hit the hay in B.D Jeffries’ gazebo. Anabelle can just join me in hide and seek; she can’t drive yet so we may as well just live out the rest of spring here at Knollwood. At least until May 13.
