WELCOME

THIS MONTH’S MAGAZINE could be dubbed “The Advice Issue.” Sure, it’s full of inspiring spaces, but there’s a lot of information that I can’t wait to use. For starters, a bevy of local tastemakers reveal some of their favorite decorating and entertaining secrets. They’ve opened up their little black books to share their recent design discoveries, as well as essentials for any get-together. Their insight has put me in the mood to have a party, and now I have new ideas for setting my own table, as well as fun cocktails to serve. In our features section, designers Carter Kay and Nancy Hooff devised a clever solution for displaying a couple’s evolving art collection. At Lake Rabun, architects Todd Pritchett and Craig Dixon and designer Jeff Jones created a spectacular second home for an Atlanta family that’s filled with countless design details. And in Decatur, a cottage by designer Nikie Barfield is imbued with all the charm and creature comforts anyone could want. If you would like to see a beautiful home in person, take my advice and visit the Decorators’ Show House & Gardens, which opens April 20 (the official program is included in this issue). With almost 40 designer spaces on view, there’s sure to be something to inspire you.

SPRING!

The editors and a panel of local lifestyle experts reveal their decorating and entertaining inspirations for the season NEW TEXTILES Clay McLaurin drew from his Georgia roots and journeys to Japan to create his fi rst fabric collection, Clay Studios (CLAYMCLAURIN.COM), set to debut this spring at Ainsworth-Noah & Associates. McLaurin, a former fabric design professor at the University of Georgia’s Lamar Dodd School of Art, painted each of the 10 patterns. Each brushstroke gives the collection a loosely drawn, organic nature. McLaurin and his partner, Todd Piercy, desired to debut the collection, which is manufactured in North Carolina and made of Belgian linen, in the South, and particularly, Atlanta, where they live. “His designs are youthful. They’re fresh,” says Winton Noah of Ainsworth-Noah.

During trips to Japan, McLaurin was inspired by Asia’s plant life and fabric textures and techniques (some became pattern names, such as Shibori, which is a dyeing method). After spending time in the Northeast, where he earned his master of fi ne arts in textiles from the Rhode Island School of Design and worked in New York City, McLaurin embraced his southern roots in creating the collection. The palette, which he describes as subtle, also was inspired by nature. “The South has that strong hold to nature and plants and gardening,” he says. “My grandmother taught me how to garden. Some of the patterns are inspired by plants that grow here and things that were in her garden.” —Lori Johnston

PATTERNS IN THE CLAY STUDIOS COLLECTION OF FABRICS INCLUDE (FROM TOP RIGHT) SHIBORI, BRUSH, MEDALLION, WANDERING STRIPE AND BLEEDING HEART. THE FABRICS ARE AVAILABLE IN MULTIPLE COLORWAYS THROUGH AINSWORTH-NOAH & ASSOCIATES, (404) 239-8462; AINSWORTH-NOAH.COM. 9

COLORS THAT INSPIRE

{

“I’M LOVING COLOR, COLOR, COLOR MIXED WITH FRESH NEUTRALS SUCH AS WHITE, PALE BLUE-GRAY, OR SOMETHING LIKE CLEAR, CRYSTALINE SAND. NOTHING MUDDY OR MURKY.” —John Oetgen

“My favorite spring cocktail is ‘Coming Up Roses,’ which can be found in my book, Soiree: Entertaining with Style (Rizzoli, $50).” —Danielle Rollins

COMING UP ROSES

“The perfect spring cocktail is Hangar One Kaffir Lime vodka with Perrier and freshly squeezed lime. This drink, with a hint of green, an extraordinary aroma, and an exceptionally crisp flavor, makes me think of spring pretty much any time of year.” —Joel Kelly

• 6 OZ OF FRESH LIME JUICE • 3 OZ FRESH ROSE PETALS (MAKE SURE THEY ARE NOT SPRAYED WITH PESTICIDES) • 1/2 OZ ROSE SYRUP • 1 SPLASH OF ROSE WATER • 1 1/2 OZ RASPBERRY OR LEMON FLAVORED RUM • 2 OZ CHAMPAGNE Muddle lime and rose petals with rose syrup and rose water in a mixing glass. Add the rum and shake well in a cocktail shaker with crushed ice. Pour into a tall glass, filled with crushed ice, top with Champagne. Garnish with more rose petals, thinly sliced lime wheels and a straw.

"Of course, I rarely follow the recipe and encourage others to make drinks to taste, not from a recipe card! I usually combine all of the ingredients, except anything fizzy, in a pitcher and make for a crowd! This also allows me to make the drink ahead of time. Then top with the Champagne just before serving."

BREAST CANCER

SURVIVOR. Audrey Allen

Savannah, Georgia

“My care team developed a personalized treatment plan just for me.” When Audrey was diagnosed with breast cancer, she was devastated. Like many newly diagnosed people, she went online, exploring every breast cancer treatment solution. But she couldn’t find exactly what she wanted. She had heard about Cancer Treatment Centers of America® and our unique treatment model. With over three decades of experience in treating complex and advanced-stage cancer, we were the cancer hospital Audrey was looking for. Within a few days Audrey and her care team developed a personalized treatment plan combining leading-edge conventional treatments with scientifically-based supportive therapies. Audrey opted for Brachytherapy, a more advanced form of radiation. And with the help of her dietician and naturopathic doctor, she was able to reduce side effects and stay strong during her treatment. Eight years later, Audrey is confident she made the right decision in going to Cancer Treatment Centers of America. Her husband, children and grandchildren are, too. Read more about Audrey’s treatment and life after breast cancer at cancercenter.com/audrey.

If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with advanced-stage or complex cancer, call our newest hospital in metro Atlanta at 1.888.845.2471 or visit us at cancercenter.com/southeastern. Appointments available now.

AROUND TOWN WITH

Naomi von Habersham If you’re a designer or design enthusiast, more than likely you have already purchased your tickets to the 2013 Decorators’ Show House & Gardens, set to open on April 20. Organized by the Atlanta Symphony Associates, the Decorators’ Show House has become an annual tradition for many of us. I can’t claim to have attended all 42 of the previous showhouses (this year will mark its 43rd anniversary!), but I have visited my fair share of them. Through the years, I have seen some beautiful rooms decorated by the likes of T. Gordon Little and Ed Kilby, both of whom helped to put Atlanta on the design map. A recent jaunt down memory lane reminded me of how much the showhouses have changed through the years. Twenty years ago, antique furniture and porcelain were practically a requirement for most designers’ rooms, but over the last few years, that hasn’t always been the case. If what people tell me is true, antiques are making a comeback (hooray!), so I expect to see them featured prominently in future showhouses ... and perhaps this year’s house, too. There are some trends that don’t bear repeating, and one that I hope will never rear its head again is the rufes-andbows phase which once held the decorating world spellbound. If you were around in the 1980s, you know what I’m talking about. Rufes were added to lampshades, bed skirts, curtains and tablecloths, while bows were slapped on walls, bed posts and, yes, on those long-suffering lampshades. This frilly frippery seemed to converge on both showhouses and private residences, and it was a design offense that most of us—of a certain age, of course—committed. Thank goodness we got that design trend out of our systems! But that’s precisely the fun of a showhouse. It’s a repository of design ideas where you can see the colors that are currently captivating designers and the fabrics that are all the rage, all while playing design critic, too. Considering that tickets are only $25 ($20 if you buy in advance), I’d say that’s a lot of bang for the buck! Just don’t use the savings to buy any rufes or bows, please.

Local taste connoisseurs dish on their favorite creations that highlight this juicy fruit

“A very refreshing and light springtime drink is our Soda No. 4 that combines gin, vermouth and strawberry shrub. To make the shrub, add 16 ounces of fresh sliced strawberries to one pint of apple cider vinegar. Bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer for eight minutes. Next, strain and add four ounces of simple syrup and cool immediately. Once you’ve mixed the entire drink, top it with San Pelligrino Aranciata and garnish with a strawberry slice.” –Matt Bradford, Canoe

“When working with strawberries, I almost always pair them with black pepper and Cointreau. At the restaurant, we macerate fresh strawberries with cane sugar, a pinch of salt, fresh ground black pepper and a splash of Cointreau. We serve it with white chocolate spoom (Italian egg white ice cream), torn basil and amaretti.” –Taria Camerino, No. 246

“I always enjoy a good spinach salad with the combination of strawberries and cheese. For the citrus vinaigrette, mix orange, lemon and lime juice with Dijon mustard, honey, white balsamic vinegar, oil, salt, pepper and strawberry preserves in a shakable container. This mixture keeps for up to five days. Use this as a dressing for a salad of baby spinach, crumbled blue cheese and sliced strawberries.” –Ted Lahey, Table & Main

Cardamom Hill chef Asha Gomez recently opened a multi-use cooking space at Studioplex. Called THE THIRD SPACE, the venue—outfitted with Miele appliances—resembles a high-end home kitchen and serves as a one-stop destination for chef demos, classes, private dinners, tastings, book signings and more. THE DESTINATION ALONE WAS ENOUGH TO ENTICE ANY FOODIE OR OENOPHILE. But in the heart of wine country, the second annual Flavor! Napa Valley festival delivered more than a mere taste of the region’s top chefs and vintners. Attendees experienced a veritable feast of demonstrations, tastings and dinners, featuring an impressive array of Napa Valley-based celebrity chefs, restaurants, vintners, sommeliers and artisan food producers. And the locale was no less notable; most of the events took place at The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) at Greystone—a legend in its own right.

THE FOOD. Event founder Chef Michael Chiarello was joined by fellow Napa Valley chefs that would top any Who’s Who list. Festival-goers, for instance, could hear Thomas Keller, of The French Laundry, expound on the importance of selecting fresh produce or learn the art of making sushi alongside Chef Masaharu Morimoto. And when Chiarello wasn’t teaming up with Chef Christina Kaelberer to whip up Italian pasta and pastries, you might fi nd him doing “battle” with CIA graduate Geoffrey Zakarian; their “Food Fight!” saw each chef loading his opponent’s basket with locally-sourced ingredients, then racing against the clock to create the best dish. Other distinguished CIA grads featured in the weekend’s lineup included Scott Conant, Johnny Iuzzini, Charlie Palmer as well as the much-celebrated Larry Forgione. Known as the “godfather of American cuisine,” Forgione was honored at the opening night dinner, where eight world-renowned chefs—including his sons Marc, Sean and Bryan—created a four-course dinner that could only be described as gastronomical nirvana.

THE WINE. Among the wine experts sharing their expertise were Rajat Parr, wine director of the Mina Group, and Karen MacNeil, Chairman of Professional Wine Studies at the CIA and author of The Wine Bible. Likewise, Napa Valley’s own Andrea Robinson—the ďŹ rst female Master Sommelier in the United States—was on hand. Throughout the weekend, they shared their vast knowledge on everything from blind tasting to Napa’s emerging cult wines. And the “Appellation Trailâ€? event gave attendees a well-rounded taste of what the valley’s all about; more than 100 wineries were pouring everything from AlbariĂąo to Zinfandel while some of Napa Valley’s best restaurants served up tasty tidbits. The most devoted oenophiles, though, took part in “Legends of Napa Valley,â€? a two-day tasting of wines that have put Napa Valley on the map, reaching back to the post-Prohibition wines of the 1940s and going through to present-day superstars. Featured picks on the ďŹ rst day alone included the ’57 Louis Martini Pinot Noir, ’66 Charles Krug Vintage Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, ’76 Joseph Phelps Insignia, ’78 Chateau Montelena Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, ’79 Stag’s Leap Wine Cellars S.L.V. Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, ’83 Shafer Vineyards Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon as well as the 2001 Schramsberg Vineyards Blanc de Blancs Late Disgorged bottling. On day two, this ultimate tasting experience included special tributes to

legendary winegrower Andy Beckstoffer and winemaker Heidi Barrett, featuring wines from Bacio Divino Cellars, Carter Cellars, Schrader, Tor Kenward Family Wines and La Sirena as well as David Arthur Vineyards, Hundred Acre and a multitude of others. But this event was about more than just getting to taste some spectacular vintages; it was just as much about the opportunity to hear winemakers and vintners share their personal perspectives on their wines and their place in Napa Valley’s history. THE ATMOSPHERE. While strolling through the Culinary Institute of America’s historic Greystone building in St. Helena—going from cooking demos to wine tastings to book signings by many of the renowned chefs—there were reminders all around that the building was formerly the storied Christian Brothers Winery. Considered the largest stone winery in the world when it was completed in 1889, the castle-like structure today has the reputation as one of the world’s most unique and inspiring campuses for culinary education, offering year-round programs for professionals as well as everyday enthusiasts. Somehow, it’s apropos that Flavor! Napa Valley’s setting was just as inspiring as its fare. Editor’s Note: Flavor! Napa Valley 2013 is scheduled for November 20-24. It’s all about the mix in this Garden Hills cottage, where traditional pieces from the owners’ previous home of 29 years mingle with newer, contemporary ones, such as Nancy Corzine slipper chairs in tufted Jerry Pair Leather. The antique needlepoint chair, acrylic coffee table and mid-century lamps are all from Travis & Company, while the antique hassock is from William Word Antiques. The sumptuous William Yeoward sofa is from Grizzel & Mann, and the silk-and-wool rug is Eve & Staron. opposite Tucked into a corner of the living room is a gathering spot designer Carter Kay likens to a “French salon.” The cozy nook serves as the showcase for the family’s art collection. Anchored by a dining table from the couple’s former home, it is surrounded by comfortable John Saladino swivel chairs.

decided to downsize to a 1930s Garden Hills cottage, they wanted a home that would not only appear precious from the street, but also live luxuriously. It was a challenge approached with enthusiasm by designer Carter Kay, who had designed the family’s former home 20 years ago, and had recently worked on their Savannah retreat with design associate Nancy Hooff. The empty-nesters are members of a passionate, art-collecting brood, and thus have a profusion of inherited and collected fi ne art. But with fewer blank walls to hang it upon, Kay and Hooff were pressed to get creative, consolidating the collection into a series of eye-catching galleries. In the living room, one of these galleries serves as the backdrop for an intimate seating nook, creating a layered and comfortable space that Kay likens to a French salon. The gallery also presides over an elegant arrangement of new upholstered pieces—a William Yeoward sofa, Nancy Corzine slipper chairs and a classic needlepoint chair, which are tempered by a sleek and thin acrylic coffee table. In the dining room, Kay and Hoof were careful to create that telltale mix of traditional and modern, of old and new. Case in point: A gilded chandelier holds court over a glass-and-acrylic table surrounded by Smith Grubbs dining chairs, while a bank of metal windows is punctuated by antique columns. What was most important to the homeowners, though, was adding character to the home. “The husband is a real creative, and one of the more thoughtful men I’ve ever met,” Kay recalls. “In one of the fi rst conversations I had with him, he immediately spoke about enhancing the home’s architectural history.”

A tall iron console table fills an architectural nook to the left of the front door, providing a pleasing place for the eye to land. opposite Renovations by the previous homeowners saw the removal of the second floor, which created a soaring ceiling in the dining room. But when these homeowners moved in, designers Carter Kay and Nancy Hoof called upon architect William Litchfield to enhance the room’s architectural character using rustic wood beams. The square dining table is from Travis & Company. A dozen dining chairs from Smith Grubbs & Associates surround it, making the room suitable for even the most sprawling of dinner parties. The lamps and console table are from Peachtree Battle Antiques. In the breakfast nook, mounted hooks keep the cushions from budging. The steel breakfast table is from South of Market, and the banquette fabrics are Perennials and Classic Arts. In the family room, Kay and Hooff removed built-in benches that distracted from the metal windows and took up precious space. In its place, the designers ďŹ lled the expanded corner with a sectional sofa from Brice Ltd. The swivel chairs are from Smith Grubbs & Associates.

THE HOME’S SPACES ARE NEUTRAL AND UNCOMPLICATED, YET TEXTURED AND SOPHISTICATED. below In the master bath, framed botanicals from the Atlanta History Center form a charming focal point. right A tailored foldout sofa from Brice Ltd. in the guest bedroom is perfect for accommodating overnight guests. A tall “Charleston-style” table from South of Market is often used for playing cards. The French wire chandelier is from Travis & Company. The swivel chairs are by Lee Industries. Drapery fabric by Dedar, available through Jerry Pair & Associates. opposite “The layout of the bedroom was Bill Litchfield’s brilliant thought,” says Kay. “He did an architectural treatment to the wall to make it wider, and turned the molding of the windows to create more space.” Now, a king-size canopy bed from Mrs. Howard—dressed in panels of Randolph fabric—can rest here comfortably. Bed linens, Susan Shepherd Interiors. Antique pillow, Ainsworth-Noah & Associates. Linen-and-jute rug, Eve & Staron.

The designers called upon architect William Litchfield to make such authentic adjustments, like adding wood beams to the dining room ceiling and expanding a window wall in the master, where a dreamy, king-size bed can now be accommodated without obstructing views or light from the outdoors. If the whole house reads especially light and bright, that’s partly because it’s painted the same shade of linen throughout. As a result, its spaces are neutral and uncomplicated, yet textured and sophisticated, just like the wife. “She always dresses classically with a twist—usually in khaki pants, with a cream-colored top and a scarf in a great color,” explains Hooff. In fact, her outfits informed many of the decorating decisions. Invariably, the objects she was drawn to would mirror her outfit that day. In fact, it was those kind of cues that influenced the subtle blue-green and curry shades peppering the rooms. “I think her house looks like who she is and who she’s always wanted to be,” notes Kay. The man of the house, for that matter, seems to feel the same. “He wrote us the sweetest note,” she adds humbly. “He said it was the house he’d always dreamed of owning, but he never thought he’d have.” SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK. 40

Exposed beams, 12-foot ceilings and overscaled transom windows give Ann and Warner Veal’s residence a “relaxed and lake-y character,” says architect Todd Pritchett. Throughout, modern elements are combined with those that have a Southern verve. Lots of airflow, for instance, is a Southern concept while white-washed walls—and pops of colors like that found in a bright chartreusecolored door—have a modern feel. HIS HOME ON LAKE RABUN HAS A SINGULAR STYLE. Which is precisely what

owners Ann and Warner Veal wanted. “I’ve always loved quirky things that are mixed with classic,” says Ann. “More than anything, I wanted this house to be fun.” To that end, she turned to Jeff Jones—her go-to designer for the past 20-some years, when he fi rst opened Jeff Jones Design. One of the things that makes the relationship work: They share a belief that challenges give birth to creative and interesting solutions. And this home was not without its challenges. The original house had its share of water problems. But more than that, it wasn’t big enough to accommodate the owners’ growing family. The idea of an expansion, though, produced another challenge: The structure’s footprint could not be changed. The Veals reached out to architects Todd Pritchett and Craig Dixon of Pritchett + Dixon, who took the structure down to its 45

A flagstonelined sitting area, with gardens designed by Tim Stoddard, features comfy seating and an outdoor shower. The chairs are from Kolo Collection. A family photo gallery in the foyer is a kinetic work of art itself. Made of jute string and clips, it constantly changes and grows. opposite One of the things Ann likes best about the home’s architectural design is that “every room looks out at the lake—even the kitchen.” Given the home’s steep site, visitors enter on the second level, where reclaimed floors and sliding barn doors lend an air of rusticity while neutral hues—punctuated with a pop of color— speak to the owner’s preferred palette. An old life raft serves as the perfect wall accent in this lakeside home.

“I spent MUCH OF MY CHILDHOOD just a few doors down from the Veals at my relatives’ house, so I have FOND MEMORIES of the Lake Rabun area,” says architect Todd Pritchett. “With lake properties like this, you have to PROTECT THE MEMORIES to RESPECT THE LAKE and what it’s about. It’s important to create a relationship to where you are.”

Still, there are primitive pieces—like “Charlie Catfish,” who oversees the room—that beautifully balance old and new. left As the owners of Traditions in Tile and Stone, Ann and Warner Veal had access to exquisite materials. Still, they give credit to the company’s own Jack Hughes for the tile design throughout the house—including the red glass-tiled backsplash in the kitchen. below To provide plenty of room for relaxation, Pritchett flanked the dining area with two separate living spaces. original foundation. In its place now stands a new three-level home that fuses the best of two worlds. “You know you’re in a Southern lake house—there’s a certain Southern vernacular—but there are modern elements, too,” says Pritchett. The modern aesthetic is apparent in the open floor plan, with overscaled doors and windows creating the feeling of glass walls. The kitchen, with its mix of ultra-modern Siematic cabinetry and primitive pieces, has a warehouse feel. Meanwhile, the nod to Southern style is evident in the wood walls, reclaimed floors and fieldstone fi replaces. The architects also took full advantage of the home’s prime location. “The house is no more than 30 feet from the lake, and on the edge of the Chattahoochee National Forest,” Pritchett points out. “Every room has a view of one or both.” At the same time, the new plan meets the owners’ need for a larger entertaining area, as well as more bedrooms and baths—plenty of space for six grandchildren. There are now two living areas instead of one; a dining area, with a table large enough to seat 12, separates the two. 49

It’s truly a signature of the two of us when we work together.” Yellow chairs, South of Market. Pendant light made of buoys, Jeff Jones Design. Bedside lamps, Pollen. And with the exception of the master, bedrooms are intentionally small—like boutique hotel rooms—because, says Ann, “When you’re at the lake, who wants to spend a lot of time in their room?” Every inch of this house, however, speaks to Ann’s distinct sense of style. “She wanted this house to be one of joy, family, fun and surprise,” says Jones. “We had a great time searching for those unusual, often one-of-a-kind objects and handcrafted furnishings. And the materials throughout are bold and unique. Of course, it helped that the Veals own a major tile and stone business. We had so many options from around the world at our fi nger tips.” Proof positive that the design team got it right lies in Ann’s assessment of the completed project. “This house makes me smile,” she says. There may be no greater compliment. SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK. 52

Designer Nikie Barfield and her family found Decatur before it was a destination.

And their home, a 1920s charmer in the heart of town, might just be the happiest on the block. After moving to Atlanta from Raleigh in 1999, Barfield wanted nothing more than to fi nd a home with intrinsic character, an attractive yard and, most of all, Tudorstyle windows. As luck would have it, a work associate of her husband, Scott, happened upon a bungalow with exactly the features Barfield described. There was also a gorgeous stone fi replace, coved moldings and crystal door hardware installed by previous owners. After six months of renovations in 2004, the couple had nearly doubled the home’s square footage. And Barfield, at the time an immigration attorney, found a new calling in design. Soon, friends became clients, and clients became friends. Describing her style as “neutral and natural,” Barfield has infused a light spirit into her own domain. Linen and creamware abound, cowhide swaths the living room floor, and textured surfaces reign paramount. If it’s natural, it’s included in the mix. Ample gathering spots provide comfortable places to lounge on a Saturday, greet a guest, enjoy a meal, entertain or just chat on the phone. “My husband loves to sit in the living room and read. And one of my sons always ends up at the game table in the family room.

58

There are so many little nooks to retreat.” The sense of serenity and softness is palpable throughout the space. The kitchen is equally as welcoming—complete with a farmhouse sink, Roman shades, statuary marble countertops, and a butcher block that, surrounded by galvanized metal Marais chairs, becomes a rugged work space-cum-lunch spot. Meanwhile, a round, marble-topped number commands the breakfast nook. Upstairs, an entire master suite was formed from formerly unusable space, and now features steep, sloping ceilings and a dormer window. The adjacent bath features a winsome original window, clawfoot tub and an old-fashioned take on the vanity table. Unexpected furnishings catch your eye in every room—a console snuck between a sofa and a wall, a demilune tucked behind a wing chair, a desk flanking the entryway, and a row of dining chairs aligned as a makeshift bench. It’s these little surprises that make Barfield’s rooms feel so unpretentious and real. “I think of design as a deconstructive process,” she says. “I never start with a floor plan and just plug stuff in. I tell my clients to fi nd something they love, and that’s where we’ll start.” With a fi nished product this beautiful, it’s clearly a method that works. SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK.

The equine painting is a Scott Antique Market find. In the dining area, vintage diner chairs, once covered in unsightly linoleum, are now upholstered in lovely linen. One of my big design mantras is balance. I always try to ensure I’m not using too much of one style or another. I think that’s what keeps a home looking fresh and feeling good. It’s also about falling in love with something, whether it’s the design or the way it touches you, and finding a way to incorporate that piece into your house. —Nikie Barfield 60

LIFE

QUINTESSENTIALLY ATLANTA

GARDENS

What makes an Atlanta house a HOME? In the fourth installment of our year-long series examining the things that are essential to every Atlanta residence, MARCIA SHERRILL trades her manicured digits for a pair of green thumbs.

Although we aren’t seeding acres of tobacco or patches of soybeans anymore, Southerners still “love us a garden.” No Atlanta house, big or small, is a home without its lush green space outdoors and flowering houseplants indoors. The children will be grown before we get rid of our Christmas cactus, and we festoon the rest of our homes year-round with fancy-pants plants, like the orchids that are now commonly found on just about every foyer console and kitchen windowsill in the city. We are a long way from Mee Maw’s garden, composed of gladiolas, rose moss and petunias. With vegetable gardens on their balconies, my friends living in high rises are practically urban farmers, and the city’s restaurants and hotels are 64

now following suit with their own spots of vegetation. You can keep up with Horseradish Grill’s garden via Twitter. Even Atlanta City Hall boasts a rooftop green spot. Urban gardens aside, Atlantans still love a proper hedge, as well as mounds of mondo grass, rows of Rhododendron and acres of azaleas. We love the formality, and it shows in our green spaces—few cities, outside of France, can boast the sheer volume of boxwood and privet as Atlanta. They say fences make great neighbors, but whoever said that was not a proud Atlantan—here, we can count on our neighbors to weed whack us into tidiness if we are away on vacation. My own childhood was rich with gardening. Garden clubs abounded when we were young.

Part social mischief and part actual shears in hand, garden clubs were unabashedly devoted to ensuring that we Southerners did not neglect our “land.” We may not have had the acres and acres of our recent past, but we had a responsibility to fend off the kudzu, keep the tires out of the front yard and watch over the odd water-spouting cherub. Truth be told, we also loved nothing more than to clothe our houses in greenery—and ivy was our weapon of choice. Momma fell into a crying jag when her gardener fi nally listened to her cry that someone, preferably him, “cut back the ivy on the house.” He had been drunk for the better part of two weeks, and even her legendary patience was wearing thin. Well, he cut it back all right— with a blow torch! A brick house with no ivy? Naked? It was unthinkable. She raced to the nursery and we stayed up into the wee hours with klieg lighting to tape up ivy on the front of the house. By morning we had at least a couple of feet taped up, hoping that it would take hold by summer. When it comes to clipping, sheering and trimming these days, Atlantans prefer something between the Edward Scissorhands-style excess of a Vegas (animal topiaries, anyone?) and the arch formality of a Savannah. Of course, nothing compares to our love of dogwoods, cherry trees and sweet magnolias. They may be old-fashioned, but they’re true classics.

A MESSAGE FROM CHIEF TASTER DICK DENNY In some places, twenty-one is the age of majority; in others, it’s the legal drinking age. Here in Atlanta, it’s the number of years we’ve been hosting Atlanta’s greatest party, all for the benefit of the High Museum of Art, as well as the wine industry.

So here we are—LEGAL AT LAST. We started small in 1993 and have grown; this year we will host over 30 events leading to our grand food and wine tasting and the Live Auction.

What can be said of the wines can also be said of the man, and we are delighted to have Monsieur Claude Giraud as one of our Special Guests of Honor. For 30 years, Claude has been the driving force behind his family’s magnificent Champagne house—modernizing, experimenting, taking risks and creating some of the most exciting Champagnes in the world. At age 30, he began re-crafting and changing out long-established, proven cuvées in favor of bold, new blends. He revamped the company’s distribution network and committed to sourcing from the Forest of Argonne. These changes have been deliciously successful. Robert Parker recently wrote, “Claude Giraud produces one of the most exceptional and original Champagnes. The greatest Giraud Champagnes offer an absolutely incredible intensity, class and balance.” No wonder the Japanese refer to Giraud Champagnes as “drops of God.” How fortunate we are to have the man responsible for such celestial praise as one of our Special Guests of Honor.

SPECIAL GUEST CHEFS We welcome four Special Guest Chefs from four different states for the 21st Anniversary Wine Auction. These talented Chefs will be right there beside you as they cook a spectacular feast for Friday night’s Vine-to-Table event on Auction Eve.

Chris Hall Local Three—Atlanta, GA Chris Hall is very popular with the locals who come to eat at Local Three. Drop by and have a meal with Chris and his two partners, Todd and Ryan and you’ll understand why. This Chris guy can cook, y’all. Chris is the restaurant’s Chef and Managing Partner and the most local of the Local Three. Chris grew up around the corner from the restaurant. He’s one of us. He’s a self-taught chef who nonetheless has a great restaurant resume having worked in the kitchens of Philadelphia’s Le Bec Fin, Atlanta’s Canoe and 4th & Swift. Chris has an unconventional, unrestricted style that gives his dishes an imaginative blast of flavors and freshness—of course his habit of demanding the absolute freshest local produce, meats and seafood never hurts either. If you haven’t already tried Chris’ great food at Local Three, count on a visit as soon as possible. Chris is a very special talent who we are delighted to have as one of our Special Guest Chefs this year. Welcome this Local culinary legend to the 2013 Wine Auction.

Greg Hardesty Recess—Indianapolis, IN Freedom is important to Chef Greg Hardesty. For 5 years he earned his restaurant chops in places like Hollywood and San Francisco until he decided to open his own place back home in Indianapolis in 1999. H20 Sushi Bar was born. Greg wowed Indianans with his bold flavors using classical sushi techniques with a contemporary California-French twist. But there were other food worlds to conquer. Greg opened Elements in 2003, his second restaurant, featuring modern American cuisine that was heavily influenced by his Japanese and Mediterranean leanings. Both restaurants were big successes, but Greg wanted still more freedom to cook without restrictions. He sold his two restaurants and opened Recess. The name says it—a joyful break from everything else—time to do what you want and enjoy every minute. The menu is a playground for Greg and his staff to create anythinggoes-four-course, pre-fixe dinners each day based on the ingredients and ideas that are freshest. In 2011, Room Four, Greg’s fourth restaurant, opened next door to Recess. Greg’s cooking prowess has earned him national attention from USA Today, The New York Times, PBS and Wine Spectator to name a few. Please give our Hoosier Guest Chef a warm Southern welcome.

Chris Hastings Hot and Hot Fish Club—Birmingham, AL Birmingham’s Hot and Hot Fish Club is always the hot place to eat, thanks to Chris Hastings who co-owns and co-chefs the place with his wife, Idie. Chris and Idie have put Hot and Hot on the culinary map by creating some of the freshest, finest food around. But don’t let the down-home name fool you—Hot and Hot serves a refined and sophisticated blend of French, Southern and California cuisines that has impressed Chris’ customers as well as the national press. For instance, Chris is the 2012 James Beard Best Chef in the South award winner. He’s a successful author of “The Hot and Hot Fish Club Cookbook.” Chris and Idie have also been recognized and raved about by The New York Times, Food and Wine, Garden & Gun and are past winners of the Robert Mondavi Culinary Award of Excellence. That’s the short list. Oh, and Chris beat Bobby Flay in Food Network’s Iron Chef America Battle: Sausage! challenge. Just another day at Hot and Hot. Chris learned the basics at the Johnson & Wales Culinary School and learned even more at the California Culinary Academy, after which he picked up a few pointers working for obscure, little-known Chefs named Jeremiah Tower and Wolfgang Puck. Chris has a long-standing history of lending his talents to worthwhile charities and causes, and we are so glad he’s decided to lend his expertise to ours. Thank you, Chris!

Patrick Owens Langdon’s and Opal—Mt. Pleasant, SC Carolina Lowcountry cuisine is in Patrick Owens’ blood. He’s a Charleston native, so it’s only fitting that the pecan wouldn’t fall too far from the tree. It began for Patrick in the kitchens of his parents and grandparents, and grew from there. Charleston Bay Caterers was his first official restaurant job, but his resume quickly grew with stints at local eateries Circa 1886 and Magnolia’s. In 2004, at the ripe age of 27, Patrick opened the first restaurant of his own called Langdon’s in picturesque Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. It was a success from the start. Langdon’s has earned an AAA Four Diamond award every year since it opened. Likewise for consecutive Wine Spectator Awards of Excellence. Wow. By 2011, with Langdon’s continuing to garner praise as the best thing in the area by a country mile (actually farther than that), Patrick decided to open Opal with the same commitment to impeccable dining, but this time with a Mediterranean twist and a more casual atmosphere. By all accounts, Patrick has created another culinary high point in the Lowcountry. Let’s give coastal Carolina’s finest our finest regards as one of our Special Guest Chefs.

Wine Philosophy: The wines at Tap & Vine will be ones where the bottle reflects the people who made it and the land it represents. I prefer to work with winemakers who have passion for the traditions of where they came from, and the land with which they work.

Wine Philosophy: To help find wines that will not only pair perfectly with the food and the guest’s palate but also help make the wine experience perfect.

Wine Philosophy: Ride all of the rides! There’s a lot of great wine out there, and while you may find that it’s not all for you, there’s always a thrill in discovering a new treasure!

Wine Director - Sommelier; Canoe 4199 Paces Ferry Road, SE, Atlanta, GA 30339 (770) 432-2663; CanoeAtl.com Wine Philosophy: Wine is a big part of my life. While I further my education into wine I am incredibly excited that the world of wine is a lifelong pursuit that changes every year. Wine Epiphany: In 1992 I traveled to Champagne and toured some of the famous caves and cellars. I was only 15 years old and I had no idea how much impact that trip would have on my life but it started my career in wine. Biggest Trend in Wine: I feel like wine is becoming more acceptable as a “cocktail” rather than something that is only enjoyed with food. The United States is the number one consumer of wine in the world since 2011, and this is obviously due to a wider interest and acceptance as wine as a leisure beverage. Perfect Pairing: Sage and Thyme Roasted Pheasant with Pinot Noir from Burgundy, France.

Wine Philosophy: The experience of wine isn’t one that should be marred by pretension. Simply stated, wine shared with friends and enjoyed over great food always becomes a special experience.

Wine Philosophy: Wine is a journey that is exciting and fun. We meet new people and wines daily and it is important to me to share my knowledge and experiences, listen to others as well and to support Boutique Producers who have a great respect for what they do.

Wine Philosophy: The right bottle of wine over a meal can transform an evening. Helping my guests to discover alternatives to the tried and true gives me a sense of satisfaction. Anais Nin once said, “Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage”—and wine is no different.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT OF ASA

WELCOME to an Atlanta springtime tradition —the 43rd annual Decorators’ Show House & Gardens, presented by the Atlanta Symphony Associates, the volunteer arm of our Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. As a visitor to this fundraising event, you are now a part of its history!

PORTRAITCRAFT

Featuring the talent, vision and artistry of more than 30 of the Southeast’s most prominent interior and landscape designers, this French-inspired residence, designed by renowned residential designer William T. Baker, will certainly be a source of inspiration as you stroll through the beautiful interiors and grounds. Take your time: Savor the many beautiful, carefully selected details in every design space. And, speaking of details, the ASA team of nearly 100 volunteers has enthusiastically dedicated almost a year to the planning and execution of all phases of this fundraising project. Leading this team is the 2013 Chair, Natalie Miller, who has expertly guided them on this journey. We are so appreciative of everyone’s efforts and dedication. We are also grateful for Liz and Mike Troy, this year’s Honorary Chairs. As longtime members of ASA, they have been major supporters of this project, this organization, and our Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. We are extremely happy to publicly recognize all of their efforts on behalf of the orchestra and honor their philanthropic and leadership example. The Atlanta Symphony Associates would also be thrilled to have you join us in our fundraising and community outreach efforts to benefit and promote the education- and community-engagement programs of our internationally acclaimed Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. In addition to our fundraising projects, we usher at children’s concerts, assist at the family concerts and instrument petting zoos, help with the auditions for the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, assist at the Talent Development Program recitals, and serve as ambassadors at all evening concerts. And, guess what? We do it “for the love of it!” We do it for the love of the music, for the love of making new friends, for the love of watching a child’s face as he or she sees a concert for the first time. Fill in the blank with your own reason. Please visit us online at atlantasymphony.org/volunteer for more information about our volunteer organization. Thank you for coming and contributing to the success of this traditional event—the longest-running of its kind in the southeast. And join us at Symphony Hall to hear the music, both classical and pops, performed by musicians who bring the highest quality of artistry to each performance. They are our orchestra—Atlanta’s own! See you there.

CHAIRS HONORARY CHAIRS LIZ AND MIKE TROY

We are so pleased that our own Liz and Mike Troy are the Honorary Chairs for this year’s Decorators’ Show House & Gardens. As longtime members of the Atlanta Symphony Associates, they have been major supporters of this project, this organization and our Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. In addition to their generous contributions to the orchestra’s annual fund, Liz has served as Co-Chair of the Decorators’ Show House & Gardens, President of Atlanta Symphony Associates and is a current member of the ASO Board of Directors. In 2003, Liz organized the wonderful Symphony Celebration, a free 12-hour event on the Woodruff Arts Center campus, which provided more than 30 music-related activities for 10,000 visitors. Another one of her inspired projects was the Painted Violins campaign in 2005, which not only raised funds, but also generated publicity for the ASO in venues across the city. More recently, Liz and Mike chaired the ASA Golf Tournament in 2011, a major fundraiser for the ASO.

LETTER FROM THE CHAIR Welcome to the 2013 Atlanta Symphony Associates’ Decorators’ Show House & Gardens. In 1971, an Atlanta tradition was born. For 43 years, the Decorators’ Show House has continued to thrive as a support for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s education and community engagement programs. We are grateful for the tireless efforts of the many volunteers, the continued support from the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and our donors. We are appreciative of our designers as their participation, vision and creativity make the Atlanta Symphony Associates’ Decorators’ Show House what it is today. Year after year, the designers have had the ability to take a blank canvas and turn it into a true work of art. We are also thankful for each and every individual who has worked behind the scenes to make this project happen. We couldn’t do it without our vendors, contractors and show room sponsors that spend many hours on this project to make it happen. Thanks so much for visiting the Atlanta Symphony Associates Decorators’ Show House and supporting such a great cause.

HOUSE HISTORY

Set on a wooded estate, the 2013 Atlanta Symphony Associates’ Decorators’ Show House & Gardens is a grand estate home inspired by the great architecture of France. The house is designed by Atlanta’s own William T. Baker and is considered to be one of his finest works. It is a testament to the fine craftsmanship and tasteful detailing characteristic of Baker’s architecture. Clad entirely in a French limestone, and featuring a slate roof and zinc dormers, this house is a faithful interpretation of the great estate houses found just outside of Paris. The interiors incorporate architectural antiques such as leaded windows, French paneling and marble mantles. The wood parquet floors and casement windows, with their decorative cremone bolts, complete the overall effect. Consisting of more than 18,000 square feet of space, the Show House will showcase the interior design work of some of the Southeast’s most talented designers. Baker is at the helm of this world-class team of designers. He is the founder and principal of one of the foremost residential architecture firms in the United States. Considered to be one of Georgia’s architectural treasures himself, Baker has achieved an international reputation for high-end design combined with a keen sensitivity for residential plans that not only live well but also provide a heart to a home that will endure through time. Baker has received numerous awards for his work, including from the ICAA and the prestigious Arthur Ross Award for Architecture in New York City in 1993 and the Urban Design Commission Award for Excellence in Atlanta in 2005. His books, New Classicists and Great American Homes Volumes 1 and 2, are international best sellers and are illustrated with homes that express the American dream of living well. William T. Baker serves as one of this year’s guest speakers. “Creating Great American Homes” will be held on May 4th at 2 p.m. 24

About ASA

IN CONCERT WITH THE COMMUNITY THE ATLANTA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CELEBRATES OPPORTUNITIES AROUND ATLANTA FOR MUSIC TO THRIVE By Holly Hanchey

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (ASO) has a long-standing tradition of world-class artistry, but it has also demonstrated a continued commitment to bringing impactful music-rich educational experiences to the people of this city, state, and region. This mission is at the heart of the Orchestra’s Education and Community Engagement department, which develops and implements meaningful programs to continue cementing the ASO’s commitment to populations throughout the Southeast. “Music is an intrinsic part of the human experience,” said Mark Kent, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Vice President of Education and Community Engagement. “We have an important role to play in bringing live music and the citizens of Atlanta together through memorable and vital experiences.” In keeping with the Orchestra’s commitment to education, the ASO hosted its annual Side-by-Side orchestral workshop last June, consisting of three days of coaching and rehearsals for young, aspiring student musicians alongside their mentors and inspiration, the ASO musicians. This year the concert featured a special guest conductor — Atlanta Falcons Offensive Guard Justin Blalock. Mr. Blalock, who grew up playing the tuba and continues to play the drums and guitar, is the spokesperson for the ASO’s “When I Play Music” campaign for music education and has become a partner and advocate for impacting kids and communities through music education. The 118 students in the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra (ASYO), now in its 38th season, were selected from more than 300 applicants for the acclaimed all-student orchestra. Throughout the season, they will participate in three full-length concerts under the baton of Staff Conductor and Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra Music Director Jere Flint, in addition to working with select guest conductors and visiting guest artists. “The ASYO was the pinnacle of my musical career!” says recent ASYO graduate and violinist Stacie Choy. “It has made me a patron of classical music and the arts forever. It was an unforgettable experience, and probably my best experience of high school.” Participation in the Youth Orchestra boosts student achievement in other programs. ASYO bassist Andrew Sommer recently returned from the 2013 Grammy® Awards where he was involved in the Grammy Camps – Jazz Sessions. He participated in the prestigious program as one of only 32 students chosen from across the country, and performed in various concerts during the 2013 Grammy week in Los Angeles. Another important education initiative of the ASO is the Talent Develop26

ment Program (TDP), which identifies and develops 25 musically-gifted and motivated African American and Latino classical music students. These fifth to twelfth grade students enter top national music programs in preparation for careers as professional musicians. In February of this year, two TDP musicians were semi-finalists in the prestigious 2013 Sphinx Competition — an annual event which offers young African American and Latino classical string players a chance to compete under a renowned panel of judges. The two semi-finalists, Xavier Foley and Myrtil Mitanga, also have a connection to the ASYO; Mr. Foley is an alumnus and Ms. Mitanga is an active member of the 2012-2013 Youth Orchestra. But the ASO’s education efforts extend well beyond its student musician training programs. Each year more than 63,000 students from 27 counties participate in music-rich educational experiences through the Orchestra’s field trip program, “Concerts for Young People.” In 2012 these concerts featured a creative twist. The Orchestra sponsored a composition contest so students had the opportunity to participate in the creation of this year’s field trip program. The winner, Commodore Primous, wrote a piano composition entitled “The Triumph of Day” as an eighth grader at Lovinggood Middle School in Powder Springs. He worked with composer and ASO bassist Michael Kurth to turn his piece into a fully orchestrated work. Commodore’s composition was played by the world-class musicians of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra at each of the 2012-2013 Next Generation field trip concerts and was included in the ASO’s annual musical tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “A King Remembrance.” In addition to the Orchestra’s in-house programs, the ASO firmly believes in extending music-based education into the classroom. For example, in January, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra’s Musicians in Schools program visited DeKalb County’s Evansdale Elementary to bring an engaging musical experience to nearly 500 first through fifth graders. This free program is just one of the ways ASO musicians share their talent and inspiration with students through lecture-demonstrations, master classes, music clinics, and handon activities — all while working side-by-side with teachers to bring music instruction to life. The Orchestra’s educational efforts continue to pioneer new and innovative strategies to create a meaningful impact. The Wells Fargo ArtsVibe Teen Program is the latest addition to the Woodruff Arts Center campus and the Community and Education repertoire of the ASO. In collaboration with the Alliance Theatre, High Museum of Art, and Young Audiences, ArtsVibe

presents a teens-only arts program guided by teenagers and developed for their specific interests. The program offers a robust calendar of programs which encompass music, visual arts, and theater. Families are also an important part of bringing up the next generation of music lovers, and the ASO Family Concert series is an essential first step in introducing children to a lifelong appreciation of music. Each concert is designed to be a stimulating and appealing mix of original and beloved children’s tales, with visual humor and award-winning dancers and actors. This year the ASO presented a broad base of programming, including Halloween on Hogwarts with the Lee Harper Dancers; Charlotte and the Music-Maker with the Platypus Theatre Company; and Mother Goose with the Enchantment Theatre Company. The Atlanta Symphony strives to continuously engage the whole community. Through strong partnerships with community non-profits and other prominent Atlanta organizations, the ASO develops outreach opportunities which bring music into the lives of the sick, impoverished, elderly, and under served. In the past year, ASO musicians have reached more than 12,500 people by volunteering in more than 200 projects around Atlanta. Through the ASO’s community concerts and participation in local events, the Orchestra is connecting with broader audiences in and beyond Atlanta. In early January, ASO musicians and volunteers joined the Instituto de Mexico at the Atlanta History Center to celebrate Dia de los Reyes with performances and an Instrument Petting Zoo, bringing music to the community in an unexpected place and making it more accessible. Additionally, the Orchestra has partnered with the Georgia Humanities Council and the Smithsonian Institute on a music exhibit that is touring through Georgia called “New Harmonies: The Roots of American Music.” Each year programs like these reach more than 10,000 individuals. Partnerships with 90 community organizations help ASO outreach programs successfully leverage music to benefit the people they serve. Additionally, the Orchestra has made a commitment to those who serve our country and keep it safe. The ASO’s “Music for the Military” program enables hundreds of active military and veteran families to attend Family Concerts at no charge. Veterans and their families also receive special ticket discounts and complimentary ticket offers, including the Orchestra’s annual Fourth of July celebration at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre at Encore Park. The program also brings performances to veterans in their own communities. In November, Atlanta Falcons players Justin Blalock and Michael Turner joined ASO staff and musicians to provide a fully-catered, pre-Thanksgiving lunch for more than 100 wounded and senior military veterans and their families at the Atlanta VA Medical Center in Decatur. Atlanta Symphony Orchestra musicians performed for the crowds, and ASO staff and musicians served the meal. “This is only the beginning,” said Mr. Kent. “At the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, we believe every citizen deserves the opportunity to explore their world and realize their fullest potential through the power of music. We have so many opportunities at our fingertips to become even more deeply involved in, and available to, the community.”
