into my side of the closet, the answer would be swift: navy blues, creamy whites and hints of blush. But why shouldn’t we devote as much time to expressing ourselves (and the hues that become us) through fashion as we do through the palettes that envelop our homes? Our annual “Color” issue sets aside any notion of neutrality, and instead explores the ways bold, happy hues can coexist alongside classic silhouettes (“Striking Style,” page 106) or embolden the lives of its inhabitants (“Tudor with a Twist,” page 118), from floor to ceiling.

OR VICKIE AND TOM KIRBO, the screened porch of their Vinings home serves as a central gathering place for both entertaining friends and enjoying family time with their two children, Scott and Mary Cate. However, the space hadn’t been updated since the Kirbos renovated their home back in 2005, so the couple decided it was time for a much-needed style refresh. Vickie, who runs the fashion blog Kirb Your Style, wasted no time in calling upon designer Shayelyn Woodbery to transform the porch, along with the rest of their home. “Vickie wanted the new design to reflect her personal style and feel chic but very family-friendly at the same time,” says Woodbery. “She makes several trips a year to the West Coast for inspiration for her blog as well as personal shopping. I thought it would be fun to bring a little of that West Coast feeling to her porch: equal parts glam, laid-back family fun and chic.” Because the Kirbos wanted Woodbery to ultimately revamp

the entire house, the designer set out to create a look that could eventually be carried into the remainder of the home’s redesign. Using The Beverly Hills Hotel’s iconic jungle palm wallpaper as her jumping-off point, she incorporated a lively palm fabric from Fishman’s Fabrics into the drapery and pillows. Woodbery also replaced the original ceiling fans with bamboo light fixtures to continue the Hollywood Regency feel and make “the space more of a room and less an isolated outdoor area.” The bold print and West Coast styles determined the rest 20

of the room’s palette of green, black, yellow, camel and white. Vintage rattan chairs—covered in a chic, black Sunbrella fabric—add texture, as does an antique milliners table. “We loved how the green-and-white painted inscription on the top works perfectly with the color story, and its length allows for a great dinner party,” says Woodbery. Because there are doors leading to the porch from both the family and breakfast rooms, the Kirbos plan to use their porch as an extension of both spaces—whether watching sports, enjoy-

ing a meal or hosting guests. “I’m really inspired when I am able to help support a family in creating a space that reflects who they are,” says Woodbery, “one that they want to be in not only because it looks good but [because it] feels good too.”

His foundational knowledge of scale, proportion and space planning has helped make the hardest-working rooms in the home also the most celebrated Written by KATE ABNEY

Humble Origins

A native of Key West, Florida, Matthew Quinn arrived in Atlanta to study medicine at Emory University but changed course within a week. “I decided [medicine] was not for me and started design school a few days later,” he says. In 1993, he began working as a draftsman at Design Galleria Kitchen and Bath Studio, and his passion for kitchens and bathrooms bloomed. When offered the opportunity, Quinn did not hesitate to purchase the firm in 2002, and today, the Design Galleria brand is all but synonymous with Quinn and his talented team.

Lasting Impressions

In 2018, Quinn hopes to redefine the perception of his firm as being a kitchen and bath cabinetry company to being recognized as a design firm specializing in kitchens, baths and closets. (Closets, in fact, says Quinn, are the fastest-growing segment of the work.) Quinn’s acclaim, awards and accolades include features in major shelter publications and a book, Quintessential

decades, Quinn’s transitional style has caught the eye of old and new guard alike. “I like a room to look crisp,” he says. “Details are tight and tend to be both masculine and feminine.” Demand for Quinn’s kitchen, bath and closet design acumen is not restricted to the South; his clients are scattered across the globe, in sites such as London, Hong Kong, Russia, the Caribbean, Singapore and Bermuda. Retaining 15 employees out in the field, he manages a core team of 22 back home (including five full-time designers), where he also oversees an eponymous luxury hardware boutique at ADAC West—a showroom that’s become a favorite resource of the design professionals he admires most, from Atlanta to New York and internationally.

“I love thinking about how the earth moved and what elements came together to make a beautiful piece of stone.” —Matthew Quinn Kitchens, released in spring 2016. Still, what he’s most proud of is having built an innovative and internationally influential firm based in the South. In 2014, Quinn also became the first non–New York designer to be tapped for the Kips Bay showhouse kitchen and was called upon to create the cooking space in Kips Bay’s inaugural satellite showhouse in Palm Beach this past fall. He has also launched eight licensed product collections, which he hopes to continue creating even after his Design Galleria days. Until then, Quinn’s attention is focused on his second volume of Quintessential, slated for release in fall 2018.

AROUND TOWN WITH

Naomi Von Habersham I’M SURE THAT A FEW OF YOU will remember that beauty craze of the 1980s: seasonal color analysis. A way of helping women find the hues that best suit them, this somewhat dubious process categorized women as one of the four seasons based on skin tone and hair color. As I recall, I was labeled “summer” (or was it winter? I can’t remember) and was advised to choose makeup in cool rather than warm shades. I never placed much faith in this method, but now that I think about it, grays and rosy pinks make me look best, while browns and terra-cotta do me no credit. Maybe there is some truth to this seasonal approach after all. So many of us spend time considering which colors look best on us, but how much thought do we give to the colors inside our homes and how they may or may not enhance our appearance? When you entertain guests in your living room, for example, wouldn’t you prefer being ensconced in a color scheme that flatters not just your house but you, too? Before you accuse me of an excess of vanity, I give you etiquette maven Emily Post’s thoughts on the matter: “Another aspect of color which should be considered by every house-owner who has an atom of personal vanity…is the choosing of color as a background of personal becomingness.” She goes on to suggest that blue backgrounds become fair-skinned brunettes, while those with black hair should be seen in an atmosphere of yellow-red or red-yellow (say what?). Blondes do well with grays and taupes, according to Post, while “women of fading beauty” should stick to softly colored environments. Now that I’m fading, I’ll be sure to take that last recommendation to heart. As dated as Post’s color suggestions may be (she wrote them in 1930), her point remains valid in 2018. We lavish our homes with attention so that they look their very best. Shouldn’t we also strive to look our very best while in them? 33

REATIVITY COMES FIRST at Rose + Rye. “This is no ordinary building; therefore this should not be your ordinary dining experience,” says Jessica Schilling, general manager of the restaurant, which opened in Midtown’s historic Victorian mansion, “The Castle,” in late 2017.

Built in the early 1900s, the building itself, which spans three floors, has historically served as a

retreat for local artists. Rose + Rye, Schilling says, plans to continue highlighting this sense of innovation. “We feel like this is a safe space to be creative, and that’s where the inspiration of taking classical dishes and reconceptualizing them came from,” she says. On the menu, expect seasonally driven plates that range from savory French toast with fondue foam to a bone-in pork chop served alongside a sweet potato hash cake. The female-driven team—which includes Shilling, executive chef Lindsay Owens, pastry chef Charity Everett and sous chef Anu Adebara—is also making waves. “We saw an opportunity to fill a void in the Atlanta culinary community by creating a concept highlighting women leading in the kitchen and in the front of house,” says Schilling. “We are ever-evolving, and it’s a privilege to work in an environment

Letter From the President and Tour of Kitchens Chair Dear Friends and Patrons, Welcome! The Junior League of Atlanta, Inc. (JLA) is delighted to present the 21st Annual Tour of Kitchens. Not only is this Atlanta springtime tradition a showcase of some of the region’s most esteemed design talents and beautiful homes, but it’s also an opportunity to promote the Junior League of Atlanta, Inc.’s mission of promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving our community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. We are proud that over two decades, Tour of Kitchens has raised more than two million dollars to advance the JLA mission. As we celebrate 21 memorable years of the Tour of Kitchens, we would like to express our sincere gratitude for the generous support of our guest kitchen designers for sharing their talents, our homeowners for welcoming tour patrons, our invaluable partners and sponsors, dedicated donors, volunteers, and Tour attendees. We also extend a special thank you to Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles Magazine and Brad Hanner, without whom this beloved springtime tradition would not be possible. We are thrilled to have you as a guest at the 2018 Junior League of Atlanta Tour of Kitchens. To officially kick off the 2018 Tour, hundreds of guests attended Pour Before the Tour on January 16, 2018. Thanks to the generosity of our host sponsor, Daltile, guests met designers and homeowners in anticipation of the Tour, and the event was a resounding success. Toast of the Tour, our annual cocktail celebration, will launch the Tour of Kitchens weekend on Thursday, March 22, 2018. This opening weekend cocktail event is sponsored and graciously hosted by Guy Gunter Home. As you take the two-day, self-guided Tour of Kitchens on March 24 & 25, 2018, through 14 of our city’s most stunning homes, we encourage you to take inspiration and immerse yourself in the creativity and innovation of the Atlanta design community. Each home is a showcase of the best and most innovative design in our city. During the weekend, don’t miss out on the special culinary and event demonstrations, tastings, and more at our homes and please share your experiences on social media during the weekend by using #JLATOK. Throughout the years, our organization has harnessed the potential of Atlanta women to take the lead in an ever-evolving world and helped create a healthy community for all children, women, and families. In our 101 years, the Junior League of Atlanta has served as the premier source for civic leadership training and development opportunities for women who want to bring about lasting and meaningful change in their community. Our 3,500 members are a relevant and modern movement of women who are at the forefront of tackling the thorniest and most pressing issues affecting women and children - acting as advocates on human trafficking, education, and poverty. Your patronage of Tour of Kitchens enables our organization to empower the potential of Atlanta women to take the lead and deliver transformational community change. We look forward to seeing you on this year’s Tour! Warmly,

Batdorf & Bronson Coffee Roasters Ren Doughty has been active in the specialty coffee world for 18 years. He’s the Outreach & Customer Support Coordinator for Batdorf & Bronson Coffee Roasters, and he can’t imagine working for anyone else. Batdorf & Bronson has been sourcing and roasting some of the world’s best specialty coffee right here in Atlanta for more than 20 years. Many of Atlanta’s favorite restaurants and cafes serve Batdorf. When he’s not hanging out with his wife Julia and their three children, you’ll find Ren leading tours of their roastery, serving fresh coffee at art events around town, judging local latte art competitions, or riding his motorcycle to a good bookstore.

Charles Willis An Atlanta institution since 1948, Charles Willis has proudly served three generations of brides with its fine china, crystal, invitations, and gifts. Charles Willis offers over 400 china patterns from the finest manufacturers in the world, assuring that today’s brides will find the perfect pattern. Its bridal registry has expanded nationwide via its website, www.charleswillis.com. Visit Charles Willis in the heart of Buckhead at 465 East Paces Ferry Road or call 404-233-9487.

Doggy Dogg Once upon a time in Bavaria, the German landscape was covered in snow and fog. As mist loomed through the air, James, the Doggfather, exited a Christmas mass towards the town square. As he passed through, he noticed a gentleman set up with a cart selling tasty sausages on crusty bread with mustard. From there, the inspiration was born. Four years later, Doggy Dogg took the next step from the hot dog cart to a take away/late night window shop in Decatur. The same passion and local emphasis on food philosophy applies, but with a renewed focus on the dogs.

Eclipse di Luna Eclipse di Luna Restaurant and Tapas Bar, Atlanta’s original tapas concept, was founded in Buckhead by chefs Paul Luna and James Ehrlich in 1997. Now with an additional location in Dunwoody, both kitchens serve up a unique array of small plates amongst the restaurant’s lively and authentic atmosphere. Over the years, Eclipse di Luna has received praise from local publications and was named “Best Tapas Restaurant” in Atlanta by Creative Loafing and Atlanta Journal-Constitution. The Buckhead location is open on Monday and Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to midnight, and Sunday from 4 to10 p.m. For more information, visit www.eclipsediluna.com.

Flwr Creations Kimie and Marc have collectively been professionally cooking for over 24 years. Marc obtained formal training at L’Academie de Cuisine, in Gaithersburg, MD. Kimie, Japanese-American, born and raised on the Big Island of Hawaii, has been passionately exploring her culinary cultural roots. Together, they mash up the best of traditional French and Italian dishes with Asian infused flavors and Hawaiian inspired techniques. They offer the best of culinary entertainment at clients’ in-home dinner parties and corporate events as well as intricately detailed cookie decorations and baked goods arrangements. They also take their culinary skills overseas where they facilitate cooking classes for corporate leadership development trainings in the Tuscan mountains, an hour north of Florence, Italy. Teresa Dothard, food blogger from Culinary Local had this to say: “If you’re looking for a diversion from the ordinary, let Chef’s Marc and Kimie’s Hawaiian-Asian Fusion cuisine whisk you away.” 10

About the Kitchen

BUILDER:

This posh high-rise was the ideal choice, but homeowner Stephen Wells knew the kitchen wasn’t right. He returned to kitchen designer Matthew Rao, with whom he had worked on the transformation of a single-family home. Stephen wanted a minimal look to showcase his vibrant art and city views. The kitchen is stunning, minimal, functional, and social. Matthew identified the kitchen’s problems: traditional design, appliance clutter, no pantry, and misplaced cooktop. Matthew brought induction cooking to the island and left a simple wall of tall cabinets behind it, which houses the appliances, dishes, and pantries. Glossy graphite gray SieMatic Cabinetry reflects the skyline and is accentuated by bronze metal drawers along the back of the island. Refrigeration disappears behind this glossy canvas, and side by side ovens are both at eye level. Ideal for both the kitchen and art gallery, a custom-designed linear LED track system allows different light types and individual control.

About the Designer “A spontaneous, free, and richly experienced life – I imagine this tobe possible for me, my clients, for everyone, everywhere, every day.” This philosophy and aspiration stands behind each project that Matthew Rao undertakes. With a background in architecture and industrial design, Matthew has brought these sensibilities to his kitchen and bath projects for over 30 years. He creates containers for living that just weren’t possible before. Using a modern approach with a wide stylistic vocabulary, from historic to transitional to minimalist, Matthew has earned numerous design awards and appears often in publications. RAO Design Studio champions a Design + Product approach, marrying the consulting process with select lines of cabinetry, appliances, countertops, and accessories. RAO addresses a range of design scenarios and problems that design-only and product-only professionals cannot and bridges the gaps that occur elsewhere. Located in midtown Atlanta, RAO Design Studio features SieMatic Cabinetry, Gaggenau Appliances, and other premium brands. About the Kitchen Our clients wanted to remake their 100-year-old bungalow into a home for their 21st century family which would include room for two growing boys and space for the family to entertain and enjoy time together. We began by removing the main walls on the ground floor to create an open kitchen with wonderful views to the family room and dining room. What was once a floor of small, isolated rooms, is now open, sunny, and inviting! The kitchen has all the amenities to enjoy cooking and great flow to enjoy having guests. We went on to add a new second floor which created private space for the family including 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a laundry room, and plenty of storage space. At the same time, we renovated the basement for guests and play space. Their newly renovated home is the perfect place for the family to grow and make memories for the future.

About the Kitchen This newly constructed home features a kitchen with a clean and contemporary design that feels open and modern. Bright white cabinets line the back wall, rising to the ceiling with simple, minimalist lines. A modern window serves as the backsplash and admits great light to the space. A tall double oven on one side balances a paneled refrigerator and pantry on the opposite side. Base cabinets and a spacious island finished in dark oak contrast the paneled refrigerator and pantry. Alabama white marble countertops unify the space and continue the modern feel. An adjoining open pantry adds additional welcome storage. This new kitchen provides a perfect space for family dinners and a great spot for entertaining.

About the Kitchen The homeowners have a lovely Morningside home and wanted a kitchen that could accommodate their large family and frequent entertaining. Seeking more storage, better accessories, and an improved workflow, they still hoped for a beautiful remodel that would reflect their style and taste. To create a show-stopping kitchen, Cardea Home teamed up with Jessica Bradley Interiors and Dan Mattox of Builders II. Together, they blended the kitchen with the tone of the adjacent rooms designed by Jessica Bradley Interiors. Revised architecture and a more creative use of the given space allowed for a larger kitchen, a new walk-in pantry, and a new coffee bar, all while maintaining the mud room entry and butler’s pantry. The result is a harmonious update on the previous space.

About the Kitchen This 1920’s home is located in Atlanta’s Morningside neighborhood. For this renovation, we maximized the space by swapping the location of the kitchen and dining room. The kitchen is now located in the original dining room while the bar area and new dining space is in the previous galley kitchen. Working with the client’s interior designer, Brian Watford, the idea was to keep the quaint style of the 1920’s-style home, but open the two spaces up to create a more dynamic space for entertaining.

About the Kitchen Built in 1925, this home in historic Druid Hills had great bones and many original features, but the disjointed 1970s kitchen had no room for an island and was not suited for entertaining. HammerSmith and Dove Studios collaborated to bring new life to the heart of this home. By relocating the powder room and a poorly designed closet, we were able to create a walk-in pantry that also hides their small appliances, plugged in and ready for use. We created a mudroom area that includes a pet station for housing the leash, dog food and other pet needs. They got the large island that they always wanted, with three stools for their three girls. But best of all, for the first time they were able to host their extended families for Thanksgiving dinner--and they are all planning to come back next year.

About the Designer At HammerSmith, design is not about products, but rather how you live. Experience our holistic approach to creating your own personal sanctuary and discover an intentional lifestyle that focuses on what is important to you. For 26 years Warner McConaughey, founder and president, has been a leader in the industry and has assured HammerSmith delivers exceptional client care. We were named ADAC’s Designer of the Year and have been featured in hundreds of publications. HammerSmith has been a proud participant of the kitchen tour since its inception. About the Kitchen These homeowners were preparing to throw a grand birthday party with a prohibition theme because their home was built in that era. With that date quickly approaching, they realized they needed a few updates. The kitchen was dark and cluttered and didn’t lend itself to entertaining or to the busy lifestyle of this active family with five kids! Dove Studios and HammerSmith, Inc joined forces to create this dynamic kitchen. We began by converting a hallway into two very specific spaces-one for a mudroom and one for a scullery kitchen for food prep, housing small appliances, and a second sink and dishwasher. We then opened up the rest of the space and lifted the lowered ceiling to create a large open area for cooking, eating, and entertaining. Complete with professional appliances and an array of colors and textures, we created the perfect kitchen for them. In less than 90 days, we went from dark and cluttered to light, bright, and wow! The family is thoroughly enjoying their new open space and the unveiling of the new kitchen at the party was a huge success, too!

King of Pops Summertime, smiles, and Southern culture on a stick -- we’re King of Pops. Founded in 2010, we exist to create unexpected moments of happiness. Boasting flavors like Chocolate Sea Salt, Raspberry Lime, Banana Puddin’, and Pineapple Habanero, our team of 100 or so passionate people is empowered and excited to thoughtfully do what it takes to make any experience special. We scour the South for sustainable fruits and sourceable farmers for our five locally-focused kitchens. Inspired by two brothers who started with a single pushcart on a street corner in Atlanta, we chop, mash, freeze, and ship thousands of artisanal popsicles a day. Today we’re a lot bigger but not different. Check out our free weekly yoga classes that draw hundreds, drop by one of our carts, suggest our 500th flavor, or bring us to your next event. www.KingofPops.com

Lasheeda Perry, Executive Pastry Chef at the Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta Lasheeda Perry has always had a passion for culinary arts and, luckily for her, this love has materialized into a rewarding and ‘sweet’ career. A creative force in the kitchen, Perry leads the pastry team at Four Seasons Hotel Atlanta and oversees the hotel’s two dining outlets, all banquets and private events, weddings, room service, chef tastings, and off-site events. Her outstanding scholastic achievement and culinary skills earned her a four-year full tuition scholarship to attend Johnson & Wales University. Perry has received numerous awards and accolades during her career. In 2012, she won season two of Food Network’s Sweet Genius after proving her skills by overcoming tight time constraints, masterfully incorporating secret ingredients, and accommodating larger-than-life requests. When not in the kitchen, you can find Perry mentoring elementary school students and volunteering with Girls, Inc.

Lenox Cupcakes Lenox Cupcakes was founded with a deep and abiding love for cupcakes. The company began its initial operations in 2008 from a home kitchen (on Lenox Road, hence the name) and shortly thereafter, a commercial kitchen. Since then, we have settled into our licensed bakery in Chamblee’s Antique Row. We are proud to have a loyal fan base as well as corporate clients, including AT&T, Coca-Cola, CNN, Google, Microsoft, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Wells Fargo. Our gourmet cupcakes are baked in small batches using the finest ingredients: Valrhona cocoa powder, Callebaut chocolate, pure Madagascar bourbon vanilla, European sweet cream butter, and gourmet chocolate decorations. To ensure the freshest taste, our products are baked fresh daily, using locally sourced dairy and produce. Each item is lovingly handcrafted from scratch, using family recipes, and contains no preservatives or trans fats.

Lovies In the hustle and bustle of Buckhead – better known for corporate headquarters and luxury shopping – LOVIES is an unexpected, down-to-earth comfort food spot that celebrates contentment, convenience, and community. With roots firmly planted in Atlanta, LOVIES is a dream come true for friends Nate, Drew, and Kay, who developed the concept with hopes of providing the greater Atlanta community with the same good fun and great food their friends and family had come to expect from them at tailgates and other intimate gatherings over the years. Serving a hearty helping of hospitality and value, LOVIES turns quality, simple ingredients into dishes that taste like home.

Piastra Originally from Boston, Chef Greg learned about food at a young age when he first learned the phrase, “food is love.” His first culinary steps were what captured his passion when his Grandmother Rose showed him how to make chocolate chip cookies, and he is still perfecting the recipe. After training at New England Culinary Institute in Montpelier, Vermont, he worked in different restaurants in the Boston area. Around age thirty, Chef Greg trained with a classically trained French chef on a small yacht while sailing over a third of the way around the world. Shortly after the trip, Chef Greg moved to Atlanta and began working at Maxim Prime at the Glenn Hotel in downtown Atlanta. He then worked as the Chef at Alon’s Bakery and Market. After Alon’s, Chef Greg was Executive Chef at Dal Cuore in Johns Creek when he married his wife, Maggie. Just before opening Piastra, their first daughter was born and shortly after opening, their second daughter came along. 20

South City Kitchen Located in Vinings’ Ivy Walk development, South City Kitchen Vinings is the second of four locations of this sophisticated Southern dining concept from Fifth Group Restaurants. Featuring a warm yet cosmopolitan setting and new South cuisine, the restaurant is an ideal gathering spot for neighbors and travelers alike. A part of the Fifth Group Restaurants family since 2012, Jack McGinn brings two decades of industry experience to South City Kitchen Vinings, where he puts a creative spin on seasonal dishes and special menus like TomatoJam and Hogtoberfest, as well as the restaurant’s sophisticated southern classics. McGinn’s interest in all things culinary was born at his first job as a dishwasher at the age of 14. He was enamored with the pace, culture, and people of the restaurant industry and knew he wanted to make cooking a career. Honing his craft in the kitchen in the years since, McGinn has worked in a number of esteemed Atlanta restaurants in various capacities, having most recently served as executive chef at Fifth Group Restaurants’ Virginia-Highland mainstay, The Original El Taco.

About the Kitchen

CABINETS:

The homeowners wanted to remodel their kitchen to make it more functional and liveable and to incorporate new appliances. The kitchen lacked sufficient counterspace to work comfortably and lacked enough seating to accommodate family and guests. The space was large, but underutilized. We built a coffered ceiling to add architectural detail and painted it the same color as the cabinets to keep it light. Rutt HandCrafted Cabinetry was chosen for the foundation of the kitchen for its quality, beauty, and versatility. The cabinetry utilizes inset construction and features walnut drawer boxes and custom drawer accessories by Rutt. The finish is Decorator’s White. Glass cabinets include interior lighting from Rutt. The large island makes better use of the space while still leaving room for a large farm-style table with plenty of seating. Gourmet appliances by Sub-Zero, Wolf, and Miele were chosen for their performance features, reliability, and appearance. Elegant countertops of Caesarstone in Statuario Maximus give the luxurious look of marble without the maintenance worries, and a bar top in walnut by Grothouse provides a nice contrast.

About the Kitchen The homeowners wanted an updated, gorgeous kitchen and an area that could be used as a multi-purpose space. An unused and oddly placed bedroom beside the kitchen was absorbed into the design to create a scullery kitchen and pantry. About the Kitchen Our kitchen design for this home began the first phase of a project to transform the home from a mid-century brick ranch to a sleek, modern home for a young, growing family. The owners, both accomplished chefs, had a vision of blending Asian influences with modern design and fine craftsmanship. Working with Timothy Hagan, of Hagan Architects, we forged a collaborative team that brought that inspired vision to life. We imagined a massive window where the entirety of the window could be pocketed into the side wall, directly connecting to the new backyard living spaces, as the boundaries of interior and exterior space begin to be erased. The window also allows a tremendous amount of natural light to flood the kitchen. There are many custom touches throughout the kitchen. The honed granite-clad island provides an expansive work area packed with function and also serves as a welcoming area for guests to gather. The sleek, custom cabinets subtly conceal a tremendous amount of storage, and the clever wood dish drying rack behind the sink adds a special, unique touch.

About the Designer With over 20 years of building and renovation experience, Michael Jordan Homes has become one of Atlanta’s fastest growing and esteemed general contracting companies. We specialize in the unique needs of remodeling homes in the Atlanta area. We team with architects and designers, and offer complete design build services. About the Kitchen Set in a traditional Brookhaven home the original kitchen was dominated by a large peninsula bar and disconnected from the rest of the house. It was awkwardly laid out and not very functional for the homeowners who love to cook, sip wine and interact with each other while preparing meals. The Goal was to create a larger, better organized kitchen that would function as the nucleus of the entire house. Beyond functionality we wanted to transform this into the kitchen of our client’s dreams. This required blending romance, luxury and hand-crafted elegance with a dramatic Italian flair Attention to detail was key from the hand-hewn beams to the color matched hand plated finish on the cabinet hardware. Beautiful white marble countertops, custom cabinetry and bold black and gray tile backsplash are the perfect setting for the jewel of the kitchen, the Bertazzoni range. Opening the kitchen to the living spaces as well as to a porch addition provided the ideal space for the homeowners to entertain, relax and enjoy.

About the Kitchen For this project, Mast Cabinetry worked with Rocco Sinisgalli, owner of Oneida Builders, Inc., North Atlanta’s design-build firm specializing in the eight-week kitchen. Mast and Oneida started from the homeowners’ desire to turn the original, dark Dunwoody home into a light, open floor plan with the feel of an East Coast ocean home. Oneida Builders removed all of the interior walls to achieve the open concept, and concealed beams now replace the old walls between the kitchen, dining room, and den, bringing all three rooms together. The main part of the kitchen has an island large enough to cook and entertain with black honed granite countertops and lots of large drawers for storage. White maple cabinets with glass doors were installed in the galley section of the kitchen along with soapstone countertops, chrome hardware, and a bead board backsplash painted to match the island.

About the Designer Mast Custom Cabinets is a local, third-generation Amish Heritage family-owned and operated company specializing in custom and semi-custom-built cabinetry and countertops. Owner and founder Willis Mast and his sons take pride in the workmanship and personal customer service from conception to install in just four weeks while working with builders, remodelers, and designers in the Southern region. Projects include custom kitchen cabinets, vanities, custom bars, and built-in cabinetry. Every project is custom-built with detailed design that is unique yet very affordable. We offer an umatched level of commitment to excellence that is evident in every project we complete. Visit our website to view our photo gallery, project ideas, and helpful information, or set up a complimentary in-home consultation at our showroom and let us show you our work first-hand. Our design team would love the opportunity to transform your home into a beautifully enhanced living space.

About the Kitchen The kitchen was designed for aesthetics as well as function. The homeowner/ designer is an avid cook and entertainer and created a space that was functional yet creates a welcoming place for people to gather. Karpaty’s cabinet design and selection of wood was an integral part of creating this space. The sleek style with the integration of the matt gray/brown oak with the flush white bronze hardware paired with the statuarietto marble and Waterworks porcelain floor creates a modern yet inviting home. The Caste light over the island is the “jewelry” that ties the whole space together.

A SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM CHIEF TASTER DICK DENNY

Another High Museum Atlanta Wine Auction— after 25 years, what can be new? When I look at where we started and all the amazing events and special guests that have been added over the years, I get a little overwhelmed. The auction has already grown beyond what was imagined when we began in 1993!

A look at our history: 25 years ago, we started with a Friday Gala followed the next day by a Vintners’ Reception and Live Auction that was more fun than anyone would have dreamed. The next year Robert Mondavi was our Guest of Honor and his involvement really had us off and running. The following year we added a Top Bidder’s Dinner, and the year after that we attracted more winemakers to join us with a special Trade Tasting. Next, we added exclusive dinners in private homes featuring our visiting winemakers and top local chefs. The Dine Around Dinners at various restaurants in town followed shortly thereafter. We’ve expanded from hosting mainly Napa winemakers to hosting a strong contingent of vintners from Napa, Sonoma, Central Coast and Oregon. We also have some excellent winemakers joining us from closer to home, representing wineries in Georgia and Virginia. And we can’t forget about the exciting international vintners who join us each year from France, Italy, Spain, Australia, South Africa and Chile—just to name a few. And who doesn’t love their wine paired with delicious food? We’ve attracted some of Atlanta’s, and the country’s, most acclaimed chefs at our events, which have come to be known for great food as well as exceptional wine.

Over the years we’ve earned the reputation as Atlanta’s best party, but more important than all the festivities we enjoy is the impact we are making! We have grown into the United States’ largest charity wine auction benefiting the arts and consistently rank among the top of all charity auctions in the country. Since our first auction in 1993, we’ve raised over $28 million for the High Museum of Art, and since the addition of our Paddle Raise in 2006 we’ve contributed more than $1,485,000 to art access programs at the High. So, after all this what could be new? Come join us to find out as we celebrate The Art of Collecting, the 26th Annual High Museum Wine Auction! March 21–24, be a part of raising vital funds for our beloved High Museum while enjoying the very best of wine, art and food. I hope to see you there, Dick Denny Chief Taster

TUCK AND BOO BECKSTOFFER VINTNERS

TUCK BECKSTOFFER ESTATES

Tuck Beckstoffer arrived in the Napa Valley as a young boy in 1975 and was told to go play outside. He has been drawing inspiration from local vineyards ever since. Tuck’s humble beginnings as a farmer ring true in his wines. He is driven by a legacy of cultivating some of the world’s finest vineyards, and his 30 years of working, living and breathing the Napa Valley have rooted him to the land and the vine. Tuck crafts wines which use old world techniques with new world grapes. Each wine in the portfolio highlights a vineyard appellation, and the winemaking style is an elegant balance of power and finesse. As a farmer Tuck believes that a wine’s individuality comes from the vineyard and its complexity from blending the various lots into one harmonized whole. After the 2016 acquisition of the former Dancing Hares Vineyards, Tuck not only renamed the winery and property Tuck Beckstoffer Estate, but also set about making the estate a studio for state-of-the-art winemaking and a gracious home to welcome guests. Working with acclaimed winemaker Philippe Melka on their Mockingbird,

Amulet, and Semper wines has further elevated these already venerated wines. His ’75 Wines, named for the year of his arrival in the Valley, brings his experience and expertise to consumers at restaurants and bottle shops around the country. On a lark for his wife Boo’s favorite charity, Atlanta’s High Museum of Art, Tuck donated a custom made wine for friend Chef Linton Hopkins’ whole hog pig roast. The now infamous Hogwash Rosé was born, and after almost 15 vintages, demand hasn’t slowed down since. Just as Tuck’s perspective is rooted in the Napa Valley, Boo remains true to her hometown of Atlanta in her gracious hospitality and Southern literary leanings. After moving to the Napa Valley with The Hillstone Group (Houston’s) Boo found herself far away from Peachtrees. After depositing her business school applications in the mail she headed to a restaurant to celebrate . . . where she promptly met Tuck. Boo’s post-graduate dreams shifted to mastering the world of wine. Almost two decades, three children, several vineyards and a winery later, Boo thrives when she’s sharing the story of their wines. Their pairing has never been more apparent than in their singular focus on creating unmatched estate wines that generations to come will enjoy. With his Napa Valley heritage in mind Tuck charges forward in crafting world-class wines utilizing a grower’s history, a farmer’s humility, and vintner’s hand. Together, Tuck and Boo are writing the next chapter of the Napa Valley’s epic narrative.

JORIS LAARMAN LAB: DESIGN IN THE DIGITAL AGE Feb. 18-May 13, 2018

From furniture generated by algorithms to a “living” lampshade made of genetically modified cells, the work of pioneering Dutch designer Joris Laarman redefines the boundaries between art, science and technology. The High offers an in-depth look at his incredibly innovative career as the exclusive Southeast venue for this exhibition, which features numerous designs from the Museum’s collection. The exhibition is the first museum survey to comprehensively explore Laarman’s creative prowess and curiosity through a range of works dating from 2004 to the present that blend emerging technologies with skilled craftsmanship. Furniture designs, applied projects and experiments from every phase of his career are presented alongside related videos, sketches and renderings that illustrate the Joris Laarman Lab’s production processes.

TIMELESS

RENEWAL JONATHAN SAVAGE transforms one family’s ’80s abode into a retreat as timeless as it is cosmopolitan Written by KATE ABNEY Photographed by EMILY FOLLOWILL Floral Design by JANE SLOAN

Layered Luxe An outdated Nashville residence saw a dramatic architectural and interior transformation at the hands of local designer Jonathan Savage, who sourced a majority of the fabrics and furnishings in Atlanta. “I was inspired by a French salon,” Savage says of the light-filled family room, which features a GP & J Baker floral fabric on tight-back arm chairs; a coffee table repurposed from a gate procured from a property in Rue de Lille, Paris; and linen window treatments adorned with a hand-painted border by Coleman & Taylor Textiles. One of Savage’s most dramatic moves was to replace the original transom-topped windows with fully operable French doors built by Vintage Millworks.

Making an Entrance Savage is based in Music City but designs homes internationally, from Miami to California, London to New York City. One of his more recent claims to fame was designing the stairwell at the 2017 Kips Bay Decorator Show House, where his custom plaster-on-canvas wall covering paid tribute to Tennessee flora and fauna. opposite The designer’s approach to this home’s entryway was equally as impressive, with a freshly raised front door, custom windows and Marie Antoinette parquet-patterned floors inlaid in white oak and walnut by Vintage Millworks. “I knew I wanted something striking that would make an impact as you entered the home,” says Savage, who also added an elegant new stair rail and spindles. The whimsical wallpaper is Acanthus Stripe in shadow, a pattern by Celerie Kemble for Schumacher, and the planter is vintage from Travis & Company.

THERE’S SOMETHING DEEPLY SOUTHERN yet simultaneously cosmopolitan about designer Jonathan Savage, a Tennessee native and Kips Bay Decorator Show House alum whose star is quickly rising in the international design arena. Savage’s know-how was suited perfectly to a pair of Nashvillians who are well known in the local business sector and who naturally had high hopes for his approach to their aging residence—starting with the overhaul of its outdated kitchen. “Built in the 1980s, it needed an update in the worst kind of way,” the designer says. A prolific cook, the lady of the house wanted a cooking space that was as functional as it was beautiful.

Savage delivered all that and more, with diamond-patterned wire-mesh cabinet fronts constructed in England, Calacatta Borghini marble countertops and Venetian plaster walls stamped for a relief-sculpture effect. “Once we tackled the kitchen, it became inevitable that we’d work on the rest of the house,” recalls Savage, who handled both the architecture and interior design. “We wanted it to be sort of transitional: clean, simple, but keeping the tradition of the house relevant.” From there, he focused his efforts foremost on the rooms that sprung out from the

Details, Details The kitchen was the starting point cooking space, which serves as both the physical and energetic center of the home: a formal living room with lacquered walls and burl wood accents, a family room full of soft fabrics, a breezy back porch, a convenient laundry, and, of course, a dining room bedecked in Murano glass and diamond-patterned wallpaper—undoubtedly the most dramatic update of all. “We used the highest of quality throughout . . . all custom millwork, beautiful doors, E.R. Butler hardware, inlaid floors,” Savage says, referring to the Marie Antoinette pattern in walnut and white oak. A quarter turn to the right, a stately library that serves as

for the project and, by the end, also its piece de resistance. Massive slabs of Calacatta Borghini white marble make an impact on the island and backsplash wall, while custom cabinetry—including an elegant vent hood—by Vickie Edwards of Kitchen & Bath Images brings exquisite craftsmanship to the ceiling. Savage selected accent pieces, such as the vintage ceramic pineapple centerpieces, with impact in mind. The mesh cabinet fronts were custom made in England, the woven-leather counter stools are Powell & Bonnell from R Hughes and the Roman shade fabric is Carleton V Ltd.’s Chateau in Gesso. “The kitchen window opens onto the back porch, so you can serve drinks from the kitchen sink,” says Savage.

Blue Heaven The breakfast area, which leads directly to the breezy back porch and blends imperceptibly into the spacious den, expresses continuity via the same floor-grazing linen draperies. Almost everything in the house was customized according to Savage’s boundless creativity, and the breakfast table, a Hickory Chair piece cleverly updated with bright blue details, is no exception. The dining chairs are a durable outdoor design by Janus et Cie, and the atmospheric pastel print is by Kathleen Holder.

Enveloped in Elegance

The dining room received a dramatic, modern-day update with the addition of several conversation-sparking elements—most notably Carleton V Ltd.’s Deco Fret wallpaper that continues the diamond pattern seen in the adjacent kitchen’s cabinet door fronts. “I think it made the space feel cozy, kind of like a New York City pied-à-terre dining room, which is fun to see in Nashville,” says Savage, who also used a Carleton V Ltd. fabric on the dining chair backs. The chandelier is made from “Murano glass in the perfect color,” the designer adds. “It kept that traditional but clean concept going, and it’s not overpowering.” The dark-stained demilune tables are from Northgate Gallery Antiques in Brentwood, Tennessee, the artwork over the fireplace is by EMYO, available through Gregg Irby Gallery in Atlanta, and the tonal rug is by Patterson Flynn Martin.

the frequent site of business meetings is paneled in the same rich wood. Though the homeowners did not give Savage carte blanche in the literal sense, “I feel like we didn’t skimp; everything was done for a reason, and we stuck to our concept,” explains the designer, who sourced most of the home’s luxurious furnishings and fabrics at ADAC in Atlanta. “Every room in the house has its own identity with color, but subtly,” says Savage, who also brought in a plethora of animal prints. Even a forlorn space over the garage became a chic and fun game room under Savage’s direction. “These clients could have moved anywhere if they wished,” Savage says. “So when they decided to stay put, we had just one responsibility: Make it the best it could be.” See Resources, Back of Book. 97

Nesting Instinct The master suite features appointments as luxurious as any high-end hotel, which makes retiring here particularly restful. Sidled up to a sleek side table once owned by the venerable Albert Hadley, the bedroom’s streamlined four-poster from Calvin Klein Home is draped with a somewhat pixelated fabric pattern, Fantasque Baskt, from Osborne & Little, available through Ainsworth-Noah, while the sconces at each bedside are by Christian Liaigre, through Jerry Pair, and the chain-patterned carpet is by Stark. The lavatory is swathed in Carrara marble, which provides a high-contrast backdrop for black lacquered Waterfall benches from Ballard Designs. 102

Suite Dreams A restful guest suite is anchored by a graphic patterned H rug from Tai Ping Carpets that Savage considers one of his favorite finds for the house. The bedding was sourced from Yves Delorme, while the accent pillow was made from a precious Fortuny silk. Savage is smitten with the work of Fabulous Things Ltd. in Atlanta, which fabricated this room’s custom bedside tables, and which are accessorized by chic CL Sterling & Son lamps. In the adjacent bath, Savage customized the Emperador Dark marble, which he applied to countertops, inlaid with Crema Marfil marble for the intricate floors, and inset with a multitude of mirrors for a high-impact vanity sink.

Feminine Flair Every bedroom in the house has an en-suite bathroom, which has turned out to be a welcome luxury for the family’s two teen daughters. Though the former (who claims the sophisticated lavender boudoir) is away at college, the other is a senior in high school and enjoys a splashy turquoise and coral space complete with an original Dorothy Draper Espana chest that Savage picked up on a trip to Palm Beach. The younger daughter’s aqua bathroom wallpaper is a graphic motif by Romo (Clairemont in Petro), while the elder’s pattern is Osborne & Little’s Parure, rendered in ivory and pale purple.

WHILE MANY TURN TO THE LIKES of Pinterest and Houzz for interior inspiration when building a new home in this day and age, Ross and Sally Singletary opted for a more instinctive approach when it came to the design of their mountain retreat in Cashiers, North Carolina. They handed over creative license to architect D. Stanley Dixon and interior designer Heather Dewberry; the pair also oversaw the design of the couple’s other homes in Atlanta and Jacksonville. “Once you’ve worked with a client that many times, there’s an immediate trust,” says Dixon. “It really gives you the freedom to be creative. There’s no second-guessing, just letting you do your job and do it well.” The Singletarys’ main directive? To show them something they hadn’t seen before.

DixonDewberry.indd 109

Creating an inviting atmosphere was top of mind for Dixon when designing the entryway, opposite. He achieved it with interior windows made to look antique. They peer into the sunken living room, above, which was also designed to emulate the coziness of an older residence. Interior designer Heather Dewberry fashioned a unique mix of the traditional and the whimsical with striking results.

As soon as you step inside this newly built home, it becomes apparent that Dixon and Dewberry did not fail to deliver something extraordinary. Visitors are greeted with a gallery-like foyer that features a pair of paned interior windows that offer views into the sunken living room, effectively setting the tone for the home’s unique charms. Underfoot, a graphic and vivid blue David Hicks–inspired rug—smartly juxtaposed against warm-white shiplap walls—also hints that this is no ordinary mountain getaway. The mix of traditional and whimsical is a common thread throughout the home, where bold, saturated colors and vibrant wallpapers hold court next to classic lines and silhouettes. “We wanted people to be surprised when they walked through the front door,” says Dewberry. “While the Singletarys have a lot of their own personality and flair, they were willing to take exciting design risks and were very open to more striking combinations.” Case in point: A downstairs vestibule plays up Sally’s love of chinoiserie with a dragon-patterned wallpaper. Rather than simply paint the adjoining walls a complementary color, Dewberry selected a modern wallpaper that not only adds balance but further ups the intrigue. Daring design decisions weren’t reserved for the home’s smallest spaces; the library and even the bedrooms are wrapped in eye-catching color schemes and patterns.

Bold & Balanced With the home essentially built for hosting, Dixon gave special consideration to the flow of rooms. “There’s a great visual link from the kitchen all the way to the living room fireplace,” he says. “While it feels connected, there’s still a little formality and separation between spaces, so that it doesn’t feel like the kitchen sink is right on top of you when entertaining.” In the combination living/ dining room, rustic pecky cypress walls are tempered with contemporary artwork by Elizabeth Barber.

Serene Retreat For quieter moments, the homeowners can retreat to the richly layered library. While smaller in scale than the home’s other rooms, it’s not short on personality or comfort. A custom emeraldgreen lacquer on the walls and a faux antelope carpet make for a stunning combination without detracting from the room’s greatest feature: the mountain views.

While the home is a testament to creativity, it’s foremost a welcoming retreat where the couple regularly hosts family and friends. One favorite gathering spot is the sunny dining nook where guests can pile into the curved banquette that mimics in size and scale the couple’s favorite booth at a beloved restaurant in Atlanta. “We actually went to the restaurant and took precise dimensions of that booth and its relationship to the table,” recalls Dixon. “It’s a spot that’s held many fond memories for them and their family, and we wanted to re-create that here.” Covered in a fresh yellow leather, the nostalgic nook faces a floor-to-ceiling steel window with stunning mountain views. “It’s very fun to design for Sally and Ross, as they appreciate detail and originality,” says Dewberry. “They added so much of their art and family antiques to the mix once we provided the colorful backdrop. They trusted that it was going to be great and going to be different.” Mission certainly accomplished. See Resources, Back of Book. 113

Masterful Mix

The master bedroom’s bold color scheme was inspired by the floral pillow on the bed. “Many clients wouldn’t use two vibrant colors together, as we did in here,” says Dewberry. The bedskirt features the homeowners’ favorite China Seas fabric, while the window treatments are punctuated with a fretwork trim by Samuel & Sons through Ainsworth-Noah.

WHEN DESIGNER NIKI PAPADOPOULOS of Mark Williams Design Associates began planning a client’s interior renovation in 2016, she was thrilled that when it came to color, pattern and texture, the homeowner’s reaction was, “Yes, yes and yes!” Nestled in Buckhead’s Garden Hills neighborhood, the outwardly classic Tudor boasts myriad colorful surprises inside. While the historic character of the charming 1936 cottage remains intact throughout the three-bedroom, two-and-a-half-bath abode, Papadopoulos added a layer of contemporary details—such as her client’s modern art collection, bold textiles, and a striking blueand-green palette—to the home’s heritage.

1/25/18 12:20 PM

Relaxed & Refined Papadopoulos hesitates to use the term “formal” to describe the living room. While it’s more traditional than the family room, she mixed modern furniture, like the Platner cocktail table and bright-green swan chairs, with antique chests and traditional Jim Thompson silk draperies to keep the space refined yet approachable.

“I love that when you pull up to the house, it looks like a traditional Tudor bungalow,” she says. “But upon entry, it’s such a lovely surprise thanks to spaces that are open and bright with a riot of colors.” The 2,800-square-foot home has undergone extensive renovations over the past few years, and its current face-lift doesn’t shy away from bold hues or statement pieces. In the renovated kitchen, which was originally U-shaped with one tiny window, a dramatic royal blue La Cornue range holds court among the chevron-patterned, multitoned marble backsplash and waterfall island in the now open-concept space. “Reorienting the kitchen allowed us to

add a large window that lets in natural light,” says Papadopoulos. “Now it feels like a bright tree house.” Situated off the kitchen is an open family room that doesn’t mind going to the dogs. With three French bulldogs underfoot, the custom sectional by Bjork Studio needed to be chic yet durable. Papadopoulos selected a high-performance outdoor fabric from Holly Hunt’s Great Outdoors collection that is hardworking yet soft and cozy. The playful nature of the space continues with eye-catching bird artwork by Southern artist Jason Horton, which picks up the hues woven throughout the home. Indulgent Escape “We ditched the giant ’80s garden tub in favor of a Japanese soaking tub so she could have a soak but still have ample room for steam shower,” says Papadopoulos, who wanted the master bathroom to feel like a personal spa. living and dining rooms together. Coordinating bright-green upholstered antique and swan chairs, as well as the dining room’s striking polar bear art, sourced from a museum in London, adds a youthful touch to the gracious spaces. However, the green and blue teamwork is most notable in the master bedroom— the grande dame of the home. Proposing the lattice wallpaper by Carleton V Ltd. from Ainsworth-Noah was originally a wild-card option Papadopoulos pitched to her client. But once again, she was thrilled by the homeowner’s enthusiasm for such a bold choice. “Carrying the navy-and-green vibe throughout the house gave us an opportunity to incorporate the navy grass cloth on the ceiling. We really kept with that color palette through a variety of shades and textures,” she says. “The homeowner wanted some serious pattern on the walls, and I knew this lattice print would put a smile on her face every morning.” See Resources, Back of Book 123

This romance is perhaps most alluring on Kiawah Island, which is sited just 21 miles from the city of Charleston. The 10,000-acre gated community is accessible only to property owners and their guests, island employees, resort guests, vacation guests and commercial customers. Visitors enjoy 10 miles of pristine beaches and over 30 miles of paved trails, as well as a private club seven elite golf courses, including two of the top 100 residential courses in the U.S. and a renowned golf course that has hosted the Ryder Cup and the PGA Championship, which it will host again in 2021. Vacationers looking for private quarters may rent out homes or villas, while those looking for amenities and dining options at arm’s reach can stay in the island’s luxury hotel, The Sanctuary. While seasonal visitors make up plenty of the island’s population, many of Kiawah’s inhabitants are part- and full-time homeowners. A SENSE OF PLACE As an extension of its local history, Quebec City’s Auberge Saint-Antoine is the nonpareil of true luxurious style Written by GINA CHRISTMAN

132

Q

UEBEC IS A CITY OF STARK BUT SEAMless contrasts; chic, modern shops and restaurants are tucked into centuries-old fortification walls. Sinuous cobblestone streets and footpaths lead to cutting-edge galleries d’art and architectural wonders. It is home to natural wonders, too, like the St. Lawrence River, which figured prominently in the area’s history. The river served early settlers as the main route for commerce, primarily the fur trade, and was considered one of the most important ports in North America. Perched alongside the river is the picturesque Historic District of Old Quebec, or Old Port, which was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1985. The fortified colonial city enchants with its old-world character and charm—a storybook setting indeed. As history goes, two successful French fur traders were among the first to build in the Old Port in 1687 on what is now the site of Auberge Saint-Antoine, an award-winning boutique hotel and member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux association. The hotel displays more than 700 artefacts from the French and British colonial regimes, all unearthed during several years of archeological excavation on the site. The family-owned Auberge Saint-Antoine sits

like a crown jewel on Rue Saint-Antoine, the tiny street connecting the St. Lawrence riverfront and the très chic shopping street, Rue Saint-Pierre. The hotel consists of only 95 very individualized rooms and suites, created from three historic buildings dating as far back as the late 17th century. Each room’s decor is different and impeccably designed—from the British merchant period in the Maison Hunt building to contemporary-cozy in the main wing—with absolutely no creature comfort overlooked. Such indulgences as Frette linens, Bose sound systems (with an assortment of CDs), Nespresso coffee centers, and grand, lavish bathrooms with heated tile floors, no-fog mirrors and washlet bidet toilet seats are standard here. As a wow-inspiring touch, a tiny artifact is framed outside the door of each guestroom, with a “partner” piece (a shard from the same plate, handle from a matching teacup, for example) embedded in that room’s night table, and a little card explaining the piece’s historical significance. The hotel’s Chez Muffy, named in honor of Auberge Saint-Antoine’s owner and matriarch Martha “Muffy” Bate Price, is a rich, warm restaurant housed in a preserved 19th-century warehouse complete with stone walls and massive roughhewn wood beams. Menu items such as Oxtail Pot au Feu, Striped Bass with Wild Rice and Leg of Venison showcase local ingredients, many sourced from the hotel’s farm on Ile d’Orleans in the St. Lawrence River, and feature chef Julien Ouellet’s deft hand with classic French and modern Canadian cuisine. Chez Muffy’s carefully curated wine list—with more than 700 different wines from 14 countries— is a treat to navigate with the help of the restaurant’s sommelier team. In order to taste rare and expensive wines without springing for an entire bottle, guests can choose from offerings on the “Disponible au Coravin” list, where the Coravin

needle measures out precise 3- or 5-ounce pours. The Coravin allows the cork to reseal itself so what’s left in the bottle is preserved. The aptly-named Café-Bar Artefact sits adjacent to the lobby, and is a cheerful spot to enjoy a handcrafted Kir a l’Erable—cava, crème de cassis and a little maple syrup—to a simple Vin Blanc. Belly up to the bar or choose to lounge in one of Artefact’s comfy seating areas, including two small alcoves, each with cozy chairs and a fireplace, for an even more intimate cocktail time. For guests’ wellness, the hotel offers spa treatments at The Health Club, and a world-class massage therapy program at L’Attitude. LeGYM is the on-site fitness facility, complete with a yoga studio and Finnish saunas, and is available to guests 24 hours a day. There are many sights and sites in Quebec City not to miss. Just next door to Auberge SaintAntoine is the Moshe Safdie-designed Museum of Civilization which bridges the past and future with its modern design and fascinating exhibits. Historic centers like the Citadelle or the Plains of Abraham and the magic of the oldest neighborhood in North America, Place Royale/Petit-Champlain District are where the region’s rich history really comes to life. But come here for something classically Québécois—the food. It is very recent that chefs here set their focus on local ingredients, and it is an immense source of pride. Step into Louise, a clubby tavern/bistro on one side and a chic wine bar on the other, for traditional beef tartare or rabbit and pork terrine. Ciel! (Sky) downtown is the only revolving restaurant in the city and is the best way to get a 360-degree aerial view of Quebec. The food here is as exceptional as the view. A block from Auberge Saint-Antoine is Hotel Le Priori where celebrity chef Christian Lemelin presides over Restaurant Toast. His nightly tasting menu with wine pairings is a gastronomical adventure in deliciousness. An absolute must. Everything is mere steps away from Auberge Saint-Antoine so you can take in the Port City on foot, just like the Québécois. saint-antoine.com 134

To pass the time quickly, there is a wall of windows for watching shoppers on the fashionable Rue Saint-Pierre.

The urban district is best known for its open-air street art—one of the largest installations in the world.

ITH ITS WHITE SANDY BEACHES, bustling nightlife and picturesque Art Deco architecture, it’s no surprise Miami’s South Beach attracts visitors from around the world. Travelers looking for a spot to enjoy the beach, shopping, nightlife and a little R&R should look no further than The Julia, an adults-only boutique hotel in the trendy South of Fifth (SoFi) neighborhood. The recently modernized hotel, located just steps away from all South Beach has to offer, features Mediterranean Revival architecture and an Art Deco façade from its original build in the 1930s. Seattle-based architect and interior designer Stephen Busto looked to Miami icon Julia Tuttle, the hotel’s namesake, as the inspiration for the interior revitalization. The hotel lobby, decorated to emulate a Victorian solarium, captivates guests upon entry with its eclectic decor, Cuban tile flooring, tall ceilings, modern artwork and portrait gallery. The property also boasts details like a hand-painted pink ombré staircase and five two-story rooms—coined the Ibis rooms—featuring large-scale paper-cut butterfly installations created by Japanese paper artist Yumiko Mizutani. Guests looking for relaxation can escape to the beach for sunrise yoga or soak up some rays with a complimentary beach chair

LIFE

END NOTE

COURTYARD COUTURE

I

WAS RECENTLY INVITED TO interview a holistic yoga therapist in her bamboo Zen garden, where she administers therapeutic yoga. In full disclosure, I’m not a yoga devotee. I’ve tried it twice and been kicked out both times: once for collapsing into a ball of loud giggles at my inability to get into a contorted pose and another time when I screamed when the instructor tried to move my leg to a place it was not able to be. But I interviewed the therapist in the midst of bamboo shoots and a trickling water feature, and I confess that for that hour, I forgot about politics and scheduling my next haircut. Lest you think Zen gardens are only for Angelenos, the national 2018 garden trends suggest that homeowners all over are focused on the individual experience that’s currently gripping all facets of our nation. In addition to Zen gardens filled with bamboo and relaxing water features, the home meditation garden is becoming quite popular. Labyrinths, rock features, and walking paths

provide endless opportunities to contemplate what ice cream to serve at the Fourth of July party or any other challenging decisions life might throw at us. Container gardens have surged in popularity due to the rise in condos that offer an endless view of concrete and glass. A sprig of basil or a purple petunia is welcome greenery when the alternate view is the asphalt road below. With the shift in landscapes, the outdoor-furniture market has adapted to accommodate our ever-increasing need to be comforted in the great outdoors. Maybe one day a porch swing will show up at an antiques show, but until that relic comes around again, we’re consumed by comfort. Whether basking in the sun or sleeping under the stars, would it not be lovely for the entire family to gather on a queen-sized daybed with a canopy? Peace be with you in your green space this spring— whether you’re plopped in an REI collapsible chair, lounging on your designer daybed or sipping green tea in your meditative Zen space. Find your inner garden and go with it!
