which we begin planning as early as … January! My personal favorite part of being here in Atlanta for the old friends; breaking out heirloom china, silver and crystal to share with our children at the table; and attempting to recreate time-honored family recipes that likely only I will appreciate (or recognize its shortcomings!). Speaking of excuses to get together with friends, Assistant Editor Lauren Iverson reveals three holiday-specific pop-ups to check out this season (page 30) and columnist Naomi van Habersham details her plans to make from-scratch Christmas pudding—in addition to ambrosia (page 29)! After all, as Naomi asks, isn’t it all about the experience these days? However you plan to experience the holidays, we are thrilled you’ve made our December issue one of your fireside reads. For centuries, ďŹ replaces were paramount necessities for warmth and cooking, but once central heating was invented in the 20th century, mantels became architectural centerpieces transcending continents, materials and design genres

Prior to medieval times, fires were built in the center of huts in order to provide both heat and light. However, chimneys were invented in the 13th century and built into exterior walls so that smoke could vent while concurrently permitting more open living space. Because fire was the primary source for heat, cooking and light, the fireplace remained the gathering spot for families well into the early 20th century.

MANTEL INVENTIONS The first mantels were simple hoods designed to catch smoke and direct it up into the chimney flue. They were practical as opposed to decorative, and fireplaces were built as large as possible to create the most heat. Throughout Europe, various styles of mantels evolved, each referencing the cultural aesthetics of that particular country. In the 17th century, architect Inigo Jones introduced classic English architecture that was based on symmetrical ancient Roman designs. In the 18th century, the renowned

INFLUENCES Adam brothers created highly ornamental mantels that were similar to those made in France during the Louis XV and XVI periods. The first Early American mantels were simple, but by the mid-18th century, American construction rivaled those of their English counterparts.

SUZANNE KASLER BY ERICA GEORGE DINES; NANCY IZLAR AND BOOMERSHINE RESIDENCE BY EMILY FOLLOWILL

CHARACTERISTICS AND CONSTRUCTION Mantels were originally constructed from indigenous materials that were easily sourced. Wood, limestone, granite and marble were the most frequently used, with white marble considered the most luxurious. Mantel decoration evolved throughout centuries and continents to reflect cultural aesthetics. Carved flora and fauna featuring capitals, columns and brackets were some of the sculptural elements used in 18th-century English and French mantel designs while highly carved overmantels were found in the most lavish estates. By comparison, Dutch mantels of the same period were quite simple; however, the hand-painted blue and white tiles that surrounded Dutch fireboxes were highly valued decorative elements. Design aesthetics changed drastically throughout the 19th century and mantel design reflected those changes in the Victorian, Gothic, and Arts and Crafts periods. By the mid-20th century, and with the creation of central heating, mantels became purely decorative. From sleek mid-century modern designs to ornate traditional designs, mantels became commanding architectural statements rather than utilitarian design elements.

top Bookcases lined with mauve Ultrasuede set the stage for a limewashed mantel—and bold art—at the Boomershine’s. right In this library by Suzanne Kasler, an ebony-paneled mantel establishes a mood. below Nancy Izlar adds character with a carved pine and English gesso mantel.

MASS MARKET Today mantels span every price point and material and are available through a wide array of stores, shops, dealers and craftspeople. Simple, prefabricated mass-market examples; one-of-a-kind commissioned pieces; and antique and vintage options abound. Whether one aspires to replicate an ornate design from the past or simply frame a modern firebox, there’s no shortage of options from which to choose. 25

Around town with

Naomi Von Habersham ’TIS THE SEASON for traditions, and this holiday, I’m taking a trip on the wayback machine to the sights, sounds and tastes of Christmases past. Naturally, Southern holiday customs are on my December to-do list, but so, too, are a few from jolly ol’ England, because in my opinion, no one does Christmas like the English. For the first time ever, I’m going to attempt to make a Christmas pudding for my Christmas Day dinner. Yes, from scratch. In the past, I’ve ordered puddings from Fortnum & Mason, but this season, I want the experience of preparing one myself, because as the millenials say, it’s all about the experience. I have the dried fruit and suet at the ready, as well as the brandy to make the hard sauce. I mustn’t forget to buy some long matches so that I can safely flame the pudding as I present it to my dinner guests, just as Mrs. Cratchit did in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. From our side of the pond, old-fashioned ambrosia will also be on my holiday sideboard, just as it always was during my South Georgia childhood. Ambrosia is a bit labor intensive, what with peeling the oranges and shredding the coconut, but oh, is it worth it! If I’m not dead by Christmas Eve from all this cooking, I’m going to really gild the lily and make homemade yeast rolls for my dinner. On second thought, perhaps I should spare myself the agony and buy them from a bakery. Decorating-wise, I’m going old-school, with a bevy of garlands and wreaths adorned in red, gold or plaid ribbon. I want mistletoe hung from every doorway and tapered candles placed in every window. As far as festive music goes, I’ll play anything performed by the Robert Shaw Chorale as well as Alabama’s “Christmas in Dixie.” That last one might seem lowbrow, but there’s one line in the song that really expresses what we Atlantans all wish for at this time of year. As the boys from Fort Payne, Alabama, sang, “In Atlanta, Georgia, there’s peace on earth tonight.”

NATURAL INSTINCT At Westside Provisions, REDBIRD’s “free-spirited” style reflects the comforts of home Written by LAUREN IVERSON Photographed by DAVID CHRISTENSEN

A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN former Watershed co-owner Ross Jones and chef Zeb Stevenson, West Midtown’s Redbird, which opened in August, prides itself on being a “rule-free” establishment. You won’t find the overly saturated here, but instead, an assortment of fresh and simple shareable plates that complement its come-as-you-are environment. Designed by Smith Hanes, the restaurant’s open concept features a sizable bar, dining room and outdoor patio—all positioned so Stevenson can frequently interact with patrons. Take in views through towering windows or immerse your senses in the careful creation of menu favorites at the chef’s counter, where guests have a front-row seat to the kitchen’s excitingly chaotic production of dishes that offer “a little bit of everything.” Coined “free-spirited cooking,” Redbird’s menu highlights the beauty in simplicity through limited-ingredient cold plates and à la carte proteins. Expect vegetable-centered dishes—like the garden greens salad or poached leeks—to commingle with savory favorites, such as the bubbling garlic shrimp. For those looking to indulge, Stevenson suggests the sugar cream pie—a salute to both his home state of Indiana and his mother (the dessert is dedicated to her on the menu). A true advocate for simplifying modern cooking, Stevenson relays a calm enthusiasm for taking tasteful dishes back to the basics. “I’m just happy to be doing this,” says Stevenson. “I would rather be here—cooking, feeding people—more than anywhere else. It’s as simple as that.” redbirdatl.com

WISH FULFILLMENT IS ONE OF THE MANY PERKS to building a new home. For Amanda Williams, the dream come true is a showstopping closet that is larger than the adjacent master suite. A window brings natural light into the glamorous space, reflecting off of the antiqued mirrored cabinet doors. Outfitted with a luxurious velvet-covered sofa and a large center island, it feels more like an upscale boutique. “She had always dreamed of having a dedicated place to relax and be surrounded by what she loves,” says interior designer Clary Bosbyshell, who worked with architect Ross Piper and Paces Builder Group to design the new Chastain Park abode for Amanda, husband Patrick and daughter Emma. The white brick gabled dwelling relates well to the neighborhood, and the floorplan is also traditional, albeit with a twist. For example, there is no formal living room. Instead, the entire rear of the house is an expansive, open great room. “It gets more relaxed as you move toward the back of the house,” Piper says.

Streamlined Simplicity Open shelving by Brandino Brass Co. flanks the custom limestone hood that architect Ross Piper designed for the open kitchen, which has classic white cabinetry, Carrara marble countertops and a ceramic tile backsplash from Traditions in Tile and Stone. The cabinets are Phoenix Millworks and the pendants are from Circa Lighting.

A chinoiserie mosaic wallcovering depicting birds, butterflies and peonies creates a welcoming first impression in the front foyer, which is flanked by Patrick’s office and a guest suite, each with their own porch. Directly ahead is the open dining area, where a set of large iron doors in the same shape lead out to the back patio. “It’s about mixing the new with the old,” Piper says. “I don’t think iron doors and windows will ever go out of style.” Nor will the transitional limestone mantel that Piper designed for the family room, which has white walls punctuated with blue linen draperies and a mix of floral and striped upholstery in the same colorway. The handsome fireplace is a focal point for a mix of contemporary pieces alongside an antique clover side table and a square Lucite cocktail table. “Antiques add another layer and tell a story,” Bosbyshell says. The blue and white palette is consistent throughout the interior. In the kitchen, a trio of dark blue leather stools accents the classic white cabinetry, Carrara marble countertops and ceramic subway tile backsplash. On either side of the custom plaster hood, open brass shelving coordinates with the cabinet hardware and pendant lights. 41

MOVING INTO A NEW HOME presents the ideal opportunity to reevaluate your lifestyle and take into consideration what will bring you pleasure as you embrace a new chapter. Interior designer Courtney Giles’ long-term clients turned to her to aide in their transition to a smaller residence in Buckhead. “The children were grown, so they approached the interiors with a ‘grown-up’ thought process while still anticipating a crowd on occasion. The overall feel we aimed for was updated rooms that were not too formal, inviting but still elegant,” says Giles. Though keen on comfort, the couple was not willing to sacrifice sophistication, and also desired to include their prized antiques. “There was furniture that was kid-oriented in their prior home, so we left that behind and incorporated choice pieces in the new scheme,” says Giles. New upholstery on chairs and custom headboards infuses a

sense of comfortable elegance, along with layered rugs throughout. A move also allows a reconsideration of the primary palette that you once may have loved, but perhaps has lost its charms or feels a bit tired. In that regard, Giles introduced a calmer color approach as a departure from the more vibrant one in their former family home. “We pulled the colors from nature—a mix of blues and greens grounded in a creamy neutral base with accents in flax tone,” says Giles. To keep the color scheme fresh, Giles sprinkled pretty prints throughout by way of window treatments, pillows and accent pieces such as blue-and-white garden stools and a collection of porcelain. When you enter the front door of the home, the living room is front and center, so Giles wanted to make sure the message of relaxed and pretty was presented from the start. A striking Oushak rug layered over a larger neutral carpet brings the colors together, adding a welcoming softness. In the dining room, Giles chose a warm neutral grasscloth wallpaper to envelop the space and incorporated her client’s patinaed trumeau mirror as well as her dining room and chairs, adding fresh slipcovers. Existing draperies—fortuitously hung in a wonderful blue and white print—were given dressmaker details with the addition of a trim on the leading edge. The master bedroom presents the green side of the color story with a tufted upholstered headboard and accent prints along with antique French plaques over the bed. The entire house feels like an inviting fresh breeze has swept through the rooms and come in to stay. Mission accomplished. See Resources, Back of Book. 58

QUINTESSENTIAL COLORADO Sublime settings, rustic elegance, inspired adventure. All tell the story of The Broadmoor Wilderness Experience at a trio of Rocky Mountain retreats Written by ANN N. YUNGMEYER

DENVER BUSINESS magnate Philip Anschutz was only 10 years old when he told his father he wanted to buy The Broadmoor after visiting the iconic Colorado Springs resort. Decades later, his dream became a reality and he set out to build upon the legacy of the resort’s visionary founder, Spencer Penrose. Fittingly, many recent enhancements reflect the spirit of adventure set forth by Penrose a century earlier—including wilderness properties 64

Cloud Camp, The Ranch at Emerald Valley and Fly Fishing Camp. Each idyllic retreat features an alpine lodge and well-appointed cabins; a stay includes exceptional cuisine and various activities, from guided hiking and fishing to Cooking Club with Broadmoor chefs. Cloud Camp perches atop Cheyenne Mountain at 9,200 feet with sweeping views across Colorado Springs and the eastern plains. Guests arrive via chauffeured Cadil-

lac Escalade up the switchbacked dirt road from The Broadmoor’s main campus, or they may choose a more adventurous trek by mule or on foot. The grand lodge features a wraparound porch and a great room with stone fireplaces and a stunning collection of Western art and Native American artifacts. In the shadow of Pike’s Peak, guests gather for sunset cocktail hour, followed by artfully prepared dinners and campfire with s’mores. Activities await, from morning

yoga, hiking and mule rides to relaxing in a cedar hot tub enveloped in nature. Resort amenities, such as golf, tennis and spa, are just a shuttle ride away. The Ranch at Emerald Valley nestles in high alpine terrain surrounded by rocky peaks. A favorite for families and children, the secluded property offers fishing and paddling on two small lakes, along with horseback riding, biking, archery and lawn games. Further afield, 75 minutes west of The Broadmoor, the Orvis-endorsed Fly Fishing Camp is for passionate anglers of all abilities. The lodge offers guided fishing along 5 miles of private water on the Tarryall River, lush with wild brown and brook trout. Throughout The Broadmoor’s properties, the Anschutz family (who also owns Sea Island in Georgia) purposefully honors the history of the resort and the American West. Paintings and sculpture from the highly acclaimed Anschutz Collection, which holds original works and professional reproductions of Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell and other renowned Western artists, are prominently displayed along with treasured memorabilia such as Kevin Costner’s beaded, fringed shirt worn in Dances with Wolves. The all-inclusive Wilderness Experience is offered seasonally, April to November. There is Wi-Fi but no TV; you’ll watch hummingbirds and brilliant sunrises instead. With The Broadmoor’s high marks in hospitality, “camp” is hardly roughing it, and you could say that Cloud Camp, above all, feels heavenly indeed.

SCOTTISH STYLE

The enchanting Isle of Islay has more sheep than people, eight whisky distilleries and a stylishly restored historic hotel with sea views and a challenging links golf course Written by CAROLYN O’NEIL

CALLED THE QUEEN of the Hebrides, Islay is an island off the west coast of Scotland known for world-class whisky (yes, it’s spelled without the “e” in Scotland), woolen mills and a wildly beautiful coastal landscape. Most travelers to Scotland first choose to visit the historic sites of Edinburgh, the golfing mecca of St. Andrews or try their luck spotting “Nessie” on Loch Ness. But for those ready to explore the charms of rural Scottish life, the Isle of Islay is a perfect retreat. Pretty bluebells fill the forests in spring and purple heather covers the hills in late 66

summer. The climate is relatively mild due to the warming effects of the Gulf Stream, and visitors will often see seals and otters playing in the surf along the windswept beaches. Winding roads lead past quaint country cottages, grassy fields filled with grazing sheep and tidy towns with whitewashed buildings. Celtic crosses and stone ruins are a reminder of ancient clan history to be discovered. Want to know more? A “wee dram” or two of the island’s coveted single malt Scotch will help you get to know the friendly locals in no time. In fact, Islay is best known for the peaty,

smoky taste of its single malt whiskies, and the deliciously educational distillery tours along the “whisky trail” are a big draw for visitors. Top-shelf Islay whiskies include Laphroaig, Bowmore and Bruichladdich, and is also home to The Botanist gin, created from 22 foraged island botanicals. Fashion fans should stop at the Islay Woollen Mill, established in 1883, to admire the fine art of weaving tweeds. Originally used for cozy country jackets, caps and waistcoats, today tweed throws and scarves are popular. Fabrics designed here have graced British royals and Hollywood stars including

the costumes worn in the film Braveheart. After a day of sipping and sightseeing your way around the island, unwind at The Machrie Hotel & Golf Links where traditional Scottish style—including Islay tweed on the sofa and a metal stag’s head over the mantel—is not forgotten, but the decor is decidedly fresh and modern. This newly renovated and expanded historic hotel with 47 rooms and suites greets guests with a stately Victorian-era entrance and then wows them with a modern expanse of windows overlooking the links and dunes beyond. Nestled along a 7-mile-long beach, The Machrie is the design creation of native Scotsman and world-renowned hotelier Gordon Campbell Gray. Visit the hotel’s spacious Stag Lounge where guests can enjoy an elegant afternoon tea with sandwiches and scones or come later for cocktails and nightcaps served fireside. Locals often gather to dine and celebrate, as the hotel is very much a part of the community. For a more intimate experience, the stunning 18 Restaurant & Bar with vaulted ceilings and golf course views provides a sunny spot for breakfast and a romantic setting for dinners. Locally provisioned seafood stars on the menu including Islay harvested oysters, hard-shelled brown crabs, sea scallops and, of course, Scottish salmon. The artful dishes feature island-grown produce and herbs. Don’t miss the smoked haddock with eggs for breakfast. Haggis optional. The Machrie’s 18-hole golf course— originally designed in 1891—has been modernized. WANDERLIST ... AT SEA

Top picks for small-ship cruising in 2020 and beyond Written by GINA CHRISTMAN

68

“IF A BUCKET LIST IS WHAT PEOPLE WANT to do before they die, a Wanderlist focuses them on how they want to live,” stated Virtuoso CEO Matthew Upchurch at the recent 31st annual Virtuoso Travel Week (VTW) in Las Vegas. “We did some exploration into the notion of peoples’ bucket lists and found most are made up of two things: places they want to go and experiences they want to have.” Wanderlist, Virtuoso’s new web-based initiative, was all the buzz at VTW 2019. The platform enables travelers to take first steps in curating their own experiences by organizing their personal wish lists and dream destinations into an online travel portfolio. Through this, Virtuoso travel advisors can uncover unknown aspirations of their clients—insight which allows for more effective collaboration on travel plans. The term also sparked some thought. “What’s on your Wanderlist?” was not only the theme of VTW but the question that connected more than 6,200 conference attendees—at cocktail parties, award shows and one-on-one meetings—representing a total network of 20,000 travel advisors and 1,800 world-class partners. Known for their privileged access and connections to rare experi-

ences, Virtuoso travel advisors can turn anyone into a VIP anywhere in the world simply by making a phone call. With an 11 percent increase in cruise sales in 2019, scores of Virtuoso cruise partners were on hand to share what’s excitingly new and Wanderlist-worthy at sea right now. Here are the standouts in the small ship category:

PAUL GAUGUIN CRUISES Small ships in the Paul Gauguin fleet are made for cruising in Tahiti, French Polynesia, Fiji and the South Pacific, specifically to sail the island lagoons. All the cruises feature Les Gauguines and Les Gauguins—a troupe of local Tahitians who serve as staff, entertainers and storytellers that bring the island lore to life. In 2020, a new 16-night Fiji to Bali voyage has been added to the itinerary, as well as favorites including various 7-, 10-, 11- and 14-night cruises connecting Tahiti, the Society Islands, Tuamotus, Cook Islands and Marquesas, and 12- and 13-night Fiji, Tonga, Cook and Society Islands sailings. pgcruises.com

WINDSTAR CRUISES In addition to those sexy white sails on some of the ships, small-ship market leader Windstar is really best known for doing things differently—and, for its exceptional shore excursion program. Complementing the line’s popular Concierge Collection and Essentials Collection, the award-winning line recently launched Beyond Ordinary Tours, in-depth and over-thetop experiences offered in select ports. Imagine this: a panoramic helicopter flight from Monte Carlo to Alain Ducasse’s La Bastide de Moustiers in Provence for a Michelin-starred lunch. And that’s just one. windstarcruises.com 69

CRYSTAL CRUISES Adventurous luxury travelers, here’s something new for you—Crystal Yacht Expedition Cruises debuts in August 2020 with its first luxury expedition yacht, Crystal Endeavor, which offers an offthe-beaten-path option to Crystal Cruises ocean and river sailings. From deep cultural connections to exploration of remote and rugged regions, guests can visit iconic natural wonders like the Great Barrier Reef and Mount Fuji, explore Japan’s most sacred temples and shrines, Borneo’s rainforest or the penguins of Antarctica. Zodiac quests, epic aerial excursions and diving among spectacular reefs are suitable activities for the most intrepid travelers, but leisurely hikes should please just about everyone. crystalcruises.com

The revolutionary new ship in the SeaDream fleet, the Innovation, will explore all seven continents and the world’s most remote destinations including Svalbard, the Northwest Passage, Antarctica, the fjords of Norway, Japan, New Zealand, the Fiji Islands and the Great Barrier Reef. A rendering of the open-air sea beds on the SeaDream Innovation. opposite A Paul Gauguin ship is visible through lush tropical foliage of Rangiroa, French Polynesia.

AQUA EXPEDITIONS Aqua Expeditions is known for its in-depth exploration of world culture and nature in a milieu of ultimate luxury. With only 20 suites, the five-star Aqua Mekong is the ultimate way to savor a locally focused culinary experience, while enjoying eye-level views of Vietnam and Cambodia. Expert-guided excursions lead to places where the Khmer Empire and the colorful lives of its descendants await discovery. On the river, the staff-to-guest ratio is an impressive 1:1. aquaexpeditions.com

SEADREAM YACHT CLUB For more than 15 years, the twin-ship SeaDream I and SeaDream II yachting experience has been famous for its casual elegance, 5-star dining, world-class service and renowned itineraries. Because of the ships’ smaller size, they can access small harbors and ports of the Mediterranean and Caribbean. In 2021, The Club is introducing its “Global Yachting” concept with the 110-suite SeaDream Innovation, which, among other things, will offer bespoke sailing to all seven continents, along with a unique treat—optional open-air beds for sleeping under the stars. seadream.com To build your own Wanderlist, or find a Virtuoso travel advisor, visit virtuoso.com 70

VENETIAN ALLURE

In Venice, the San Clemente Palace Kempinski presents secluded luxury Written by CLAIRE RUHLIN

A CITY DEFINED by its web of canals, alleyways and bridges, Venice, Italy, is easily one of the world’s most recognizable destinations. Though the hustle and bustle of Venice proper is undeniably the heartbeat of the area, when it comes to home base, the best place to stay is tucked away from it all—and ensconced in luxury. Nestled on its own private island just 10 minutes away (by water taxi, of course) from Venice’s St. Mark’s Square, the five-star San Clemente Palace Kempinski offers 190 impeccably appointed rooms and suites offering panoramic views of the water or lush hotel lawn. 72

The water taxi ride from the Venice airport to San Clemente provides spectacular up-close views of the city, a sight that can only be matched by the picturesque grandeur of the hotel’s sprawling grounds. Formerly a monastery, the property is comprised of a centuries-old park, charming courtyards and the 12th-century San Clemente Church. Also among the amenities are outdoor jogging trails, a heated outdoor pool, a private dock with complimentary boat service, a kids’ club and The Merchant of Venice Spa. An ideal day begins with breakfast at San Clemente’s Insieme Restaurant, followed by a water taxi ride into town. Pay a visit to Piazza San Marco, the city’s bustling public square, but also make time to get lost wandering the back streets of Venice—and to sample gelato and an aperol spritz (or two). And if a ride through the canals is on your bucket list, the city’s iconic gondolas are perpetually accepting passengers. For a taste of the arts, don’t miss thought-provoking art and design installations at the Venice Biennale—which is held

May through November and encompasses the Art Biennale (on odd years) and the Architecture Biennale (on even years). The 17th International Architecture Exhibition will be on view May 23 to November 29, 2020, with the theme How Will We Live Together? Back at the San Clemente, unwind with cocktails by the pool or cicchetti (Venetian tapas) from the outdoor lounge, Al Bacaro, where you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the lagoon and skyline. Those looking to recharge should book a treatment at the The Merchant of Venice Spa, where the menu includes everything from the Relaxing and Tension-Relieving Massage to the 24-carat gold mask facial treatment. A stay at San Clemente isn’t complete without a Chef’s Table dinner among the hotel’s best view of the water and city skyline. Guests will enjoy an intimate homemade dinner prepared by executive chef Giorgio Schifferegger and served against the backdrop of the sunset beyond. It doesn’t get better than this. kempinski.com/en/venice

END NOTE

HAPPY-HUED HOLIDAYS

ISN’T IT TRUE THAT HOLIDAYS have standard colors associated with them? Red, white and blue for Independence Day; orange and black for Halloween; blue and white for Hanukkah; and red and green for Christmas. We’re even conditioned to participate in the marketing plan to buy big, color-coded plastic storage bins that keep said holiday decorations organized. Yet, something in the last year or so has led me to believe that those big box stores and I are wrong: holiday color palettes are expanding! I must admit that Southern California has never been shy about holiday decorations that include white fake Christmas trees covered in a rainbow of pink, yellow and purple blinking lights. I recently stood in line to buy the only real fir wreath I could find in Los Angeles county, while the person in front of me had cobalt blue hair and had chosen an imitation wreath for her door. The fact that it was 80 degrees outside and she was wearing flip-flops only further enforced the fact that everything in SoCal is counterintuitive to my Southern roots. White fake trees, blue hair and flip-flops at Christmas may be 80

further than most of us want to venture for holiday decorating, but it’s true that color palettes are evolving. Now neon green and fluorescent purple are popular Halloween colors—perhaps they make witches and spiders less scary for little ones. On a recent Southern photo shoot, we decked the dining room table in chocolate velvet and filled bowls with pine cones and paper whites for a rich and sophisticated, yet neutral holiday aesthetic. Designer Jena Salmon’s creation for the dining room at the 2019 Home for the Holidays featured a clean, but rich emerald green and white color palette. However, it’s one that’s equally appropriate for spring when mixed with pink and yellow blooms. This holiday season expect to see more than traditional red and green decking the halls. As silver and gold have made their way into the Christmas and Hanukkah decorating schemes, that’s opened the door for complementing colors such as ivory, slate blue, chocolate brown and navy to be incorporated into interiors. Whatever colors you choose this season, may both your rooms and your holidays be merry and bright!
