WELCOME Whether your home is whispering for a

subtle seasonal change or a daring design update, the holidays are a great time to try something new. Maybe it’s as simple as adding a sprig of mistletoe and a bough of red berries. Or perhaps your living room is calling for a veritable forest of greenery. Whatever your style, the three homes in this month’s issue feature unique takes on the season: classic, contemporary and, well, simply charming. If you want to see some holiday decorating ideas in real life, visit our Christmas House, which continues through December 9. The showhouse features the work of a dozen of the South’s top designers, and I’d love to see you there.Visit AtlantaChristmasHouse.com for details.

A Westside pop-up shop ushers in the season naturally, with a French twist This holiday season, the gift of inspiration is beautifully wrapped up with a burlap bow at Boutique de Noel, a pop-up shop at White Provision. Here, floral and garden designer Marie-Laure Coste Dujols of Le Jardin Francais, known for her striking arrangements for high-end hotels like the Loews Atlanta Hotel, is offering her elegant, organic Christmas creations. Open since Thanksgiving and continuing through December 15, it’s the ideal way to jumpstart holiday decorating.

CLOCKWISE, FROM RIGHT: THE BOUTIQUE’S SIGNATURE FRESH AND PRESERVED WREATHS AND GARLANDS NEED LITTLE ADORNMENT. “DURING THE HOLIDAYS, I LOVE TO MAKE FRESH FRUITS COVERED WITH CANDLE WAX,” SAYS COSTE DUJOLS. “THEY LAST SO LONG, AND THE WAX GIVES THEM A FROSTED LOOK.” SHE SPENDS COPIOUS AMOUNTS OF TIME CHOOSING THE PERFECT CONTAINERS FOR POTTED BULBS, SUCH AS THESE PAPERWHITES.

One-of-a-kind wreaths are handmade with round frames covered in layers of wet newspaper and moss, so that the natural materials stay hydrated and fresh, then dry slowly, preserving the majority of the wreath for next year. “And pine cone wreaths last forever. I have one at my house that’s been hanging outside continuously for eight years,” says Coste Dujols, who loves to collect different varieties of pine cones.

12

Coste Dujols has been stockpiling special fi nds for the holidays, using bark-covered wire, beautiful twines, and unique linen and burlap ribbons to embellish nature. The designer’s delicate ornaments, made with materials such as lichen, bark, nuts and cloves, evoke an ancient Christmas spirit. Other simple adornments, such as white starfish with a thin cotton ribbon, add shots of ethereal light to an average evergreen tree.

’TIS THE SEASON Marie-Laure Coste Dujols shares a few of her holiday essentials

Flowers Hellebores niger (Christmas Rose) and double bloom amaryllis.

Food My Christmas Eve meal must start with raw oysters. Confection My brother is a French baker, and I always ask him to bring marrons glacés, which are candied chestnuts only available at Christmas and painstaking to make. Childhood

aroma I love citrus covered with cloves for both scent and decoration. It’s Enchanting fresh apples, pears and pomegranates, frosted with candle wax, look like jewels under glass that will last throughout the holiday. There are plans for the boutique—sans holiday decor— to return as a permanent European-style flower shop in the spring, just in time for blooming branches, hyacinth and daffodils. But for now, it’s all about mistletoe and holly. The shop is closed on Mondays. 1100 Howell Mill Road, Suite AO2, Atlanta 30318. (404) 792-1680; lejardinfrancais.com.

U.S. TRUST

| CAPABILITIES

We recently had the opportunity to catch up with Wendy Kopp, Managing Director, Market Executive for U.S. Trust in Georgia as well as C. Christian Wooten, Market Trust Director in U.S. Trusts’ Atlanta office to discuss U.S. Trust’s capabilities as well as some key issues facing their clients in today’s economic environment.

WENDY KOPP

CHRIS WOOTEN

Managing Director & Market Executive, Georgia U.S. Trust

Market Trust Director, Atlanta U.S. Trust

Wendy W. Kopp is a Managing Director and Market Executive for the Georgia market of U.S. Trust. She manages fi ve sales teams with over 40 experienced professionals. Wendy has more than 25 years of industry experience advising clients and providing asset allocation, wealth transfer and preservation strategies. Prior to her role as Market Executive for Georgia, Wendy was a Private Client Advisor for U.S. Trust in Charleston. TELL ME ABOUT U.S. TRUST AND WHAT YOU DO? We are a highly experienced team of professionals and specialists serving high net worth individuals and families who want to preserve, grow and transfer their wealth. When we serve as your fiduciary, whether we are managing your portfolio or administering a trust, our focus is what best meets your objectives and expectations. Clients and their families turn to us to manage their investments, trusts, specialty assets and philanthropic needs, as well as for a broad range of complex credit and banking solutions. WHAT ARE THE KEY ISSUES FOR YOUR CLIENTS TODAY? What we see most are clients who are concerned with preserving, growing and transferring their wealth while navigating complex fi nancial markets in a changing tax and regulatory environment. WHY SHOULD PEOPLE COME TO YOU? U.S. Trust has been a leading wealth advisor for 200 years. We have a broad range of capabilities and services. That means that we have experts and specialists on-the-ground in our local offices to consult with and advise our clients. Additionally, U.S. Trust has long been held to the fiduciary standard, meaning we focus on the needs and best interests of our clients as we develop ideas to preserve and grow wealth. WHAT MAKES YOU STAND OUT FROM YOUR COMPETITORS? U.S. Trust provides highly-specialized, customized services (such as specialty asset management and multi-generational wealth structuring) to clients who think about their wealth in the context of their entire family, multiple generations, business partners, beneficiaries, etc. For example, U.S. Trust advises clients, and manages specialty assets that typically have deep personal meaning to families, such as timberland, oil and gas properties, mineral properties, farm and ranch land, commercial and residential real estate properties as well as closely held businesses and fi ne art. TELL ME A LITTLE ABOUT ART LENDING. IS IT GROWING IN POPULARITY? Many art collectors purchase fi ne works of art based on their beauty, but don’t realize their value as a fi nancial asset. Rather than selling their fi ne art, which may include taxes and loss in further appreciation, borrowing against their fi ne art allows them access to the liquidity they want while still enjoying and owning their art.

Chris Wooten is the Market Trust Director for the Atlanta Market. He leads a team of trust professionals and maintains a client book as well. Chris and his team work with high net worth and ultra-high net worth clients and identify their needs to fully execute the administration of their accounts with U.S. Trust, and to help ensure that the clients’ plan for wealth transfer is accomplished. WHAT ARE SOME OF U.S. TRUST’S CAPABILITIES THAT ARE RELEVANT FOR COMPANIES IN ATLANTA? U.S. Trust provides specialized services to help entrepreneurs and business owners with buying or selling a business and related investment goals. Our team offers a very sophisticated level of service to help our clients with their needs, including selling a business, selling property, investing in property, monitoring their estates, and managing asset allocation and investments. So for a client who wants to build a plan to pass on that wealth to younger generations, we can manage the steps to put that program in place. WHAT ARE YOU HEARING FROM CLIENTS REGARDING THE BUSH TAX CUTS? The so-called Bush tax cuts are set to expire at the end of the year, and the changes to estate transfer tax laws could create both risks and opportunities for families and individuals with substantial wealth. Without Congress passing a single piece of legislation at the end of the year, the top tax rate could rise from 35 to 43.3 percent, the capital gains rate could rise from 15 to 23.8 percent and the dividend rate could rise from 15 to 43.4 percent. Local investors might consider transferring wealth before the estate and gift tax exemptions decrease dramatically; and realizing capital gains (by selling a business/diversifying a concentrated stock position/rebalancing their portfolio) before the rate increases from 15 to 23 percent. EARLIER THIS YEAR, U.S. TRUST RELEASED IT ANNUAL “WEALTH AND WORTH” SURVEY. WHAT IS THE “WEALTH AND WORTH SURVEY AND WHAT WERE SOME OF THE KEY FINDINGS? Our U.S. Trust® Wealth and Worth survey is one of the most in-depth studies of its kind to explore the attitudes, preferences, goals and needs of high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth individuals across the United States. The survey found distinct generational differences in response to new economic realities, uncertain fi nancial security, a looming elder care crisis and dual fi nancial responsibilities for both children and parents. The survey really pointed to a shift in generational behavior and outlook, most likely shaped by personal experience and societal responses to economic realities. The next generation has not experienced the consistently strong economic growth or investment returns that Baby Boomers experienced during the longest bull market in history.

FAVORITE SPACES At this year’s Design Bloggers Conference, held in February in Los Angeles, we asked designers from across the country to send us pictures of their own favorite spaces. After hours of poring over images of beautiful rooms, the editors at Atlanta Homes & Lifestyles and our sister publications each selected a winner.

CLASSIC LIVING ROOM ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES

With the design of this room, Atlanta-based Rabaut Design Associates successfully blended the Tudor Revival-style architecture of the home’s exterior with a fresher, more transitional interior aesthetic. In the living room, contemporary art complements traditional millwork detailing and light fixtures. Tailored furnishings give shape to a space befitting the young, family-oriented client, and a fresh, spring-like palette lends energy to the room.

LIFE (favorite spaces) MOUNTAIN LIVING ROOM COLORADO HOMES & LIFESTYLES Mountain views were the inspiration for the look of this Vail residence, completed by interior designer Eddy Doumas of Worth Interiors. The rich yet neutral tones of the furnishings juxtapose perfectly with the rustic sandstone, iron chandelier and bold modern art. “Designed and ordered atmospheres can evoke an inviting sense of comfortable refinement on a mountain of chaos,” says Doumas. OUTDOOR/INDOOR POOL ROOM MOUNTAIN LIVING An indoor/outdoor pool is the centerpiece of this Snowmass, Colorado, property. A large operable door frames a dramatic view of the Elk Mountains and, when open, disappears into the ceiling. A luminous “sky” ceiling changes throughout the day, echoing the color of the real sky just outside and giving the room a magical glow. ARCHITECTURE BY POSS ARCHITECTURE

TRADITIONAL MASTER BATH NEW ENGLAND HOME This serene bath is in a historic, Queen Anne–style home originally built in 1894 for Gardiner Greene Hubbard, the first president of the National Geographic Society. A recent renovation by Boston’s Meyer & Meyer, Inc., transformed an unused office into a dream bathroom suite: gas fireplace, heated Carrara marble floor, custom window seat, steam shower and period-appropriate whirlpool tub, all pulled together with a soft palette of white and blue-gray for the perfect marriage of comfort and classic New England design. FARMHOUSE KITCHEN AT HOME IN ARKANSAS When Nathan and Christy Nockels relocated to an Atlanta suburb from their Nashville farmhouse, they enlisted the help of Anisa Darnell and Julie Holloway of Milk and Honey Home to create a kitchen that merges rustic charm with modern amenities. OUTDOOR LIVING ROOM KANSAS CITY HOMES & GARDENS Designer Cindy Rinfret is known for creating beautiful interiors, but it’s her outdoor living room that has caught our attention at her personal residence, Laurel Hill. Set amid perfectly manicured gardens and a koi pond, the welcoming space blurs the line between inside and out, protected from the elements and adorned with fine yet durable furnishings. With its fireplace and warm blankets, it beckons in any season. DESIGNED BY CINDY RINFRET; RINFRETLTD.COM

LIFE (notebook)

Naomi von Habersham AROUND TOWN WITH

While January is typically the month for starting anew, it’s December when we look back on the past year, reminiscing about the good, the bad and the ugly. There was the presidential election, the Kardashians’ unabated ubiquity and Kate Middleton’s topless photos. But for me, there were other highlights and trends that defined 2012: ~ Famed interior designer and man-about-London Nicky Haslam has added pop singer to his resume. Midnight Matinee, his debut album (yes, he sings), features guest vocals by Bryan Ferry and Bob Geldof. Will other designers follow suit and forgo their self-published books for self-produced records? ~ In the last few months, there have been not one, but two literary tributes to prominent department stores. Bergdorf Goodman marked its 111th anniversary with the book, Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf Goodman, a sentiment that just happens to be my own final wish as well. Closer to home, local historian Jeff Clemmons wrote Rich’s, A Southern Institution, a wonderful history of Atlanta’s own beloved department store. Rich’s may no longer be with us, but its famous Coconut Cake recipe lives on! ~ It goes without saying that I love Southern food, and Asian cuisine is another favorite, too. However, can someone please explain this current fad of incorporating kimchi and other Asian delicacies into traditional Southern dishes? I just don’t get it. ~ Remember the lavish interiors at those former Atlanta bastions of fine dining, Pano’s & Paul’s and 103 West? Well, opulence is making a comeback, although it’s slightly less excessive than it was in the 1980s. If you ask me, it’s about darn time. I’m tired of rustic. An expensive meal deserves expensive-looking surroundings. ~ The craze for bitters still seems to be going strong. They’re everywhere—on drinks trays, cocktail menus and package store shelves. I have a few bottles at my house, but I haven’t a clue what to do with them. Perhaps I should visit H&F Bottle Shop for some guidance, but until then, I’ll just continue to enjoy my bitters-free Daiquiris. It’s while drinking those that I mull over all of these hot topics!

FOOD

IN FOCUS The Hungry Peach proprietress— and former Chopped champion— Suzanne Vizethann recently brought another food concept to life with the opening of Buttermilk Kitchen in Chastain Park’s former Cafe at Pharr space. The Atlanta chef gave us a little inside dish on her new Southern gem. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO OPEN BUTTERMILK KITCHEN? IT WAS ULTIMATELY MY EXPERIENCE COMPETING ON FOOD NETWORK’S CHOPPED. AS A CHEF, I REALLY WANTED A PERMANENT PUBLIC ARENA WHERE I COULD SHARE MY FOOD.

24

ATLANTAHOM ESMAG.COM

WHAT’S THE CONCEPT BEHIND THE NAME? “BUTTERMILK” REFERS TO THE LIQUID UTILIZED AFTER BUTTER IS CHURNED, HENCE PLAYING UP THE PHILOSOPHY OF LETTING NOTHING GO TO WASTE IN OUR KITCHEN. I INVITE GUESTS TO COME SEE THIS FOR THEMSELVES WITH OUR “OPEN KITCHEN” POLICY. WE ENCOURAGE THEM TO TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT THE CHEFS ARE UP TO BEHIND THE SCENES, WHILE ALSO LEARNING ABOUT WHERE THE LOCAL INGREDIENTS CAME FROM AND HOW THEY’RE PREPARED. WHAT’S ON THE MENU? THE MENU BUILDS ON STAPLE DISHES FROM THE HUNGRY PEACH, BUT ALSO HIGHLIGHTS NEWLY DEVELOPED TECHNIQUES. POPULAR ITEMS INCLUDE THE PORK BELLY BLT AND SOUS VIDE FLANK STEAK AND EGGS. MY PERSONAL FAVORITE IS THE DELICIOUS BLUEBERRY COBBLER PANCAKES WITH COBBLER CRUMB AND WHITE CHOCOLATE CREAM.

WHAT ARE YOU EXCITED TO SHARE WITH ATLANTA? WE MAKE OUR SOURDOUGH WAFFLES WITH A 104-YEAR-OLD STARTER. SOME STARTERS ARE KEPT ALIVE FOR YEARS AND WE WERE FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO TRACK ONE DOWN THAT WE HOPE TO USE FOR ANOTHER 104 YEARS. DESCRIBE THE LOOK OF THE RESTAURANT. I WANTED TO CREATE A RUSTIC LOOK THAT MATCHED THE MENU’S SOUTHERN FLAIR. AFTER PEELING BACK THE BUILDING’S BONES, THE CONSTRUCTION TEAM DISCOVERED ORIGINAL WHITE BRICK WALLS, BEAMS AND HARDWOOD FLOORS, SO WE SALVAGED MOST OF THE DECOR. WE REFER TO THIS AS “UPCYCLING.” WHAT ARE THREE INGREDIENTS YOU ALWAYS KEEP IN YOUR OWN KITCHEN? TURBINADO RAW SUGAR, LEMON OIL AND HOMEMADE BUTTER. BUTTERMILKKITCHEN.COM

AMY LAUGHINGHOUSE

SOUTH AFRICAN STYLE Cool architecture turns up the heat in Cape Town Nestled between the mountains and the ocean, Cape Town has been a beacon for adventurers since the 16th century. With its culinary reputation on the rise and its proximity to South Africa’s wine country, the city continues to revel in its place in the sun. Now it can also claim the title of World Design Capital 2014, an honor awarded to cities that use design to enhance their culture and economy. AH&L heads to Cape Town to check out—and check into—three of its chicest hotels.

The lobby of the One & Only Cape Town provides two striking focal points: a modern chandelier in the form of a three-dimensional sculpture of South Africa, and panoramic views of iconic Table Mountain. “In the four years we worked on this project, we lived the site, breathed the air, met the people, and absorbed the richness and variety that Cape Town has to offer,” explains Adam Tihany of New York-based Tihany Design. “We wanted our design to embody the local sensibility, and the multilayered contemporary and traditional cultures that make up Cape Town style.”

home,” but few can match the hospitality at this Cape Edwardian mansion on Bantry Hill bluff. The intimate scale is welcoming in itself, with 11 classically decorated guest rooms in the main house, plus a five-bedroom contemporary villa with a private butler and chef. A second villa opens next year. Relax at the spa, the pool or on the terrace overlooking the Atlantic, and indulge in a tour of the hotel’s renowned collection of South African art. Got a midnight craving? You’re free to raid the 24-hour pantry, stocked with homemade sweet and savory treats. Other complimentary amenities include sunset cocktails and canapés, airport transfers, chauffeur-driven rides around town and laundry service. Actually, this is perhaps better than home. ellerman.co.za

The cool blue interior of the Aqua Room, designed by Robert Polloxfen and Jeanne Harris (the wife of Ellerman House’s owner), echoes expansive views of the surrounding sky and Atlantic Ocean. This vibrant escape, ensconced within a fi ve-bedroom villa, prominently features a painting by Australian artist Bromley that highlights the room’s breezy ambiance. Elsewhere throughout Ellerman House—in the public spaces, corridors, guest rooms and a contemporary gallery—the hotel exclusively features South African art, making it one of the most important collections of this country’s artists in the world.

In the reception hall at Cape Grace, a stylized reproduction of the cartouche from a 1730 map of the Southern Seas adorns the wall above a sofa, featuring a silk-screened passage from a 17th-century Dutch East Indies’ company document. Encased in the glass coffee table, two rare copper pans—examples of early “ovens” used to bake South African milk tarts—provide a gleaming decorative element and a nod to the country’s heritage, which interior designers Kathi and Klaudia Weixelbaumer attempted to incorporate at every turn. To the left, an 18th-century Cape Baroque cabinet, one of their most prized finds, was constructed locally from Stinkwood and Satin Wood.

ONE & ONLY CAPE TOWN “Between the breathtaking backdrop of Ta-

ble Mountain and the romantic Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, we couldn’t help but pay homage to the surroundings,” says celebrated interior designer Adam Tihany of this urban oasis, which opened in 2009 in the coastal heart of the city. Every room has a private balcony with views of the mountains, and a three-tiered glass wine loft off the lobby boasts a 5,000-bottle display of South African wine. The 91-room Marina Rise tower overlooks a manmade island, providing a lushly landscaped refuge for 40 Villa Suites. An infi nity-edge swimming pool and 13,000-square-foot spa further enhance the resort-like appeal. capetown.oneandonlyresorts.com CAPE GRACE “Timeless yet humorous, historical but sexy, and very

detailed.” That’s how designing duo Kathi and Klaudia Weixelbaumer describe Cape Grace. The 121-room property, which encompasses a heated outdoor swimming pool and spa, is tucked away on a private quay between Cape Town’s harbor and a marina. When Weixelbaumer Design revamped the property in 2007-2008, the goal, in part, was to tell the city’s centuries-old story, using Cape Dutch antiques, quirky chandeliers incorporating china from shipwrecks, and hand-painted fabrics and furnishings created by local artisans. Lamps fashioned like ships’ anchors accessorize the Signal Bar and a mural of the coast unfurls in the dining room. With its sea-faring flair, the Cape Grace provides the ultimate port in a storm. capegrace.com 27

4775 Dudley Lane, Atlanta As you meander through the hilly and sometimes hidden streets of Atlanta’s prestigious Chastain Park, you pass by stables, cyclists, runners, both modern and classic homes, and sometimes a treasure that causes you to pull over and just look. This year, on Dudley Lane, you have such a moment. With exteriors of stone and brick, multiple entrances, peaked rooflines and graceful columns, this year’s Christmas House has the feeling of an updated New England farmhouse, welcoming and comfortable while still elegant and inspiring. French doors lead to a tiered pool area, visible from the kitchen and breakfast room. The first-floor rooms, designed for both entertaining and intimacy, are showered in light, with custom floors and ceilings. We welcome this newest neighbor to Chastain Park and to Atlanta. The Christmas House is open to the public for tours through Sunday, December 9. Traditional highlights of the annual Christmas House include the Boxwoods Gardens & Gifts Holiday Boutique, the Holiday Tabletop display, Product Showcase and ongoing programs and seminars. ALLIANCE THEATRE Now in its 44th season, Atlanta’s nationally acclaimed Alliance Theatre, recipient of the 2007 Regional Theatre Tony Award® and the beneficiary of Christmas House, creates the powerful experience of shared theater for diverse people on two stages for youth and adult audiences. Under the leadership of Susan V. Booth, the Jennings Hertz Artistic Director, the Alliance Theatre is a national theater with a local address, reaching out annually to almost 200,000 patrons and members of the community. “My signature style incorporates multiple layers of luxury; when most would stop, I’m sure to add another.”

MICHEL BOYD SmithBoyd Interiors Michel Boyd’s design influences can be traced to his New Orleans roots, living in New York City and extensive European holidays. Elements of each of these cultures and experiences can be detected in the layers of design found in each space he transforms. From conservative to generous budgets, new construction to renovation, Boyd’s approach to each project is to minimize the frustration that clients often associate with interior design. His ability to “see the possibilities” has led to residential and commercial projects in Atlanta, Baton Rouge, New York and Martha’s Vineyard.

CHRIS HOLT Holt Interiors Chris Holt began his studies at the Savannah College of Art and Design, and finished with a B.S. in Interior Design from the University of Alabama. After moving to Atlanta, he worked in the design industry for five years before starting his own firm in 2001. Focusing on both residential and commercial design, Holt Interiors’ style is traditional and classic, but with a fresh sensibility. His style blends clean, crisp design ideas with antiques, contemporary lighting and artwork, and classic upholstery while his palette is calming, relaxed and understated, instilling a timeless feeling.

“A master bedroom should never be without a comfortable bed adorned with luxurious linens. I see this room as a refuge from the daily hustle and bustle; your master should act as your sanctuary.”

AMY D. MORRIS Amy D. Morris Interiors Following her 1999 graduation from the Art Institute of Atlanta, Amy Morris went on to work with Westbrook Interiors for five years, where she acquired an appreciation for both traditional and French modern design. Pairing those influences with her sophisticated design sense, Morris opened Amy D. Morris Interiors in 2005, creating her own polished—yet relaxed—transitional aesthetic, while paying special attention to the architecture, balance, scale and color in each interior space. Her signature style can be seen in projects across the Southeast—from Atlanta to Baton Rouge, Amelia Island to Orange Beach, Florida. Amy D. “I love getting out my collections at Christmas, but I’m strategic about each room so it makes an impact,” says designer Suzanne Kasler on decorating her home for the holidays. “The focus in the family room is on the antique Italian mantel; I start by putting the greenery up, then add a vase of white roses.” Custom sofas, Verellen. D

DESIGNER SUZANNE KASLER LOVES CHRISTMAS— spending time with family and friends, exchanging gifts. But, as much as anything else, she loves decorating for the season. “I love the tradition of transforming your house into a whole different look for an entire month,” she explains. “When you bring out collections you’ve put away for the year, you bring out all those memories, too.” Kasler starts planning her seasonal decor in November, when she places her annual greenery order with Planters, Inc. Then,

54

early in December, she sets aside two days to complete the transformation of the Regency-style home in Buckhead she shares with husband John Morris and their college-age daughter, Alexandra, so the family can enjoy the trimmings all month long. The interior, with its predominantly neutral palette—shades of cream, beige and ecru are the order of the day—provides a perfect backdrop for Kasler’s Christmas embellishments, allowing them to shine. But equally important to showcasing her treasured collections is the designer’s keen eye for editing.

The Morris Lantern is by Suzanne Kasler for Visual Comfort and is available through Circa Lighting. right During the holidays, the settee in the dining room provides an ideal gathering spot for sharing an aperitif with friends. opposite A silver Ralph Lauren Home bowl holds ornaments and sprigs of Frasier fir, providing the perfect centerpiece for a holiday table set with Tiffany & Co. china and William Yeoward crystal. The custom wallpaper is De Gournay, available through Ainsworth-Noah & Associates.

“Too often, people try to put things on every surface,” she explains. “I don’t put everything out; that way, it’s more special—and not so overwhelming.” Because Kasler has numerous collections from which to choose, she has a different focus each year. “I start with a concept, then pick and choose from my collections—and edit,” she says, noting that there are some constants throughout. “I have a beautiful collection of ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’ ornaments from Christopher Radko; I always put them on the main tree in the family room. And I like to use things from my Christmas collection for Ballard Designs. It was inspired by antique ornaments I’ve collected in muted colors, and the tree in the living room is done in those

ornaments, paired with all-silver varieties. The fi replace mantel incorporates them, too; the muted colors are gorgeous there.” Kasler also cherishes her collection of nutcrackers, as much for their sentiment as style. “They have a lot of memories,” she says. “They were given to me, one per year, by my mom and dad, or a friend.” The nutcrackers get significant placement, too, arranged en masse on a French console table in the foyer. Complementing the designer’s special collections throughout the house are elements in traditional red and green hues, as well as timeless Frasier fi r and juniper berries. Not surprisingly, the holiday trappings are quietly elegant—a true reflection of Kasler’s personal style. SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK. 57

Flooded with light streaming through the iron-framed windows, the breakfast room features an oversize antique table. “I get out my pretty serving pieces for all the food that’s inevitably around, and it ends up being part of the decor,” Kasler says. “I can put everything on it—and serve from right there—and still fi t 12 people around it.” The nail polish drawings are by Scott Ingram. 59

OR INTERIOR DESIGNER CARYN GROSSMAN AND FINE ART PHOTOGR APHER CHRIS BUXBAUM, every day is a celebration. The highly aesthetic couple, set to wed on their rooftop in March, live in an awe-inspiring two-story loft at Atlanta’s historic Telephone Factory, where they’ve layered all the pretty of a Parisian pied-à-terre and all the edge of an L.A. gallery. Both owned retail stores in the past, so every corner reflects a stylist’s touch. Meaningful objects move about as often as color palettes shift, and Buxbaum—who loves to cook—serves meals by candlelight every night. The pair often dines “full-service,” gazing at art projected on a blank wall while listening to a custom playlist of tunes to suit the theme. So naturally, during the holidays, Buxbaum wanted to turn up the volume. “In Jewish households, we’re not so much about decor as we are about inner faith,” explains Grossman, who was always content to celebrate Hanukkah with a simple menorah. But Buxbaum, who hails from London, has an affection for Christmas customs that’s intoxicating. He goes to great lengths to have traditional English Christmas crackers, roast beef and flamed plum pudding each holiday season. All that festivity has rubbed off on Grossman. The couple has had a ball fi lling their loft with all manner of festive trinkets—even, in a nod to their retail days, adorning chairs

with oversize ornaments purchased from a wholesale prop store. A laser-cut acrylic lace table is wrapped with Christmas lights, then accented with a miniature Christmas tree. Upon a painted French pharmacy cabinet—topped with a slab of marble—is Grossman’s holiday gift from Buxbaum, a 1960s Japanese pachinko machine. It’s met with modern lamps, disco balls and Tiffany-blue bottles sourced from their friend Tim Hobby’s former Space-Modern storehouse. A Kartell La Marie Chair, hand-stenciled by Atlanta artist John Tindel, sidles up to a folkloric wood-block collage by artist Lynn Whipple, welcoming whimsy. All mix masterfully with glamorous black Venetian mirrors, sparkling crystal vessels and a velveteen wing chair, while 14-foot-long silk curtains spill luxuriously into puddles on the concrete floor. “I like things that have an edge to them. But I also really love the contrast between clean, modern design and salvaged pieces,” Grossman says. Treasures such as a turn-ofthe-century carousel horse, a cherubic church pedestal and a 17th-century saint figure—all sourced from Love Train Antiques—guard the living space in all seasons of the year, serving as excellent foils to the graffiti partition by Atlanta artist Samuel Parker. “The holidays provide us yet another layer for expression,” Grossman explains. “For both of us, home is really an irresistible canvas on which to play.” SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK.

Colorful ornaments and crystal candlesticks set alight a centuries-old Belgian dining table from Love Train Antiques. A dozen magenta tapers contrast beautifully with the subtle outline of Philippe Starck Louis Ghost Chairs and a pair of Swedish sitters painted a brilliant turquoise hue. A petite pink-and-yellow shoe peeks from the bottom of an imposing painting of a 1930s pinup, a piece that once hung in Virginia-Highland’s iconic Colorbox nightclub. “This [loft] is so big; there’s so much wall space; normal art just gets lost in it,” explains Buxbaum. Glittering disco balls, sparkling holiday lights and a sinuous chandelier add additional lustre to the voluminous room. 65

day after Thanksgiving, Adelaide Burton changes her everyday china to the Spode Christmas china she received as wedding gifts 28 years ago, when she and husband Dal moved into their charming farmhouse in Buckhead. Over the years, the holiday tradition has remained as their family has grown up in the now nearly 100-year-old home. “It’s a very old house. We finally cleared off a part of the cement floor in the basement and uncovered a date scratched into it: Feb. 7, 1913,” she says. “It has been hit by trees and it seems to survive.” The longtime family home also has survived Burton’s well-meaning attempts to bring it into modern times. She recalls talking to an architect in the ’80s about updating the home, adding marble, chintz, detailed molding and other “terribly grand” features. “He said, ‘Adelaide, some farmer and his chickens lived in this house. make this house something it’s not,’” she said. “It’s the best advice I ever got. Now, I always try to make everything stay true to the farmhouse.” Although Burton succumbed to some trendy elements along the way—such as, in the ’80s, changing the stacked stone to green marble on one of three original fi replaces—the stockbroker-turneddecorator later realized she had been working against what the farmhouse wanted to be. A few years ago, she took a hammer and started whacking at the marble, which ended up taking a painter three days to remove. “The minute I got that off, everything fell into place,” she said. “I’m doing what the house wants.” Now stockings are hung from a fi replace that has a more traditional look. The main tree in the living room is fi lled with candles and birds—devoid of any glitter and bows— while greenery, holly and sugared fruit provide seasonal touches throughout the house. Horizontal wide-plank walls in that space add another architectural detail fitting with the farmhouse aesthetic. Over the years, Burton has learned to let the home’s original style and family focus lead her decor decisions, including what type of lighting to use. “There are nine lanterns in this house,” she says. “It’s not a fancy, Waterford chandelier kind of house.” SEE RESOURCES, BACK OF BOOK. 75

MARCIA SHERRILL

Cozy CHRISTMAS Marcia Sherrill celebrates the season in comfort Here, down South, our favorite time of the year has fi nally arrived. Who cares if Maine and other states that we can’t even place on a map have actual snow. That just means they have to have snow tires, while we can drive unencumbered to the store and load up on comfy, warm accessories to bring in the cheer. We’ll polish the andirons and light a fi re in the hearth even if it means we have to dial down the A/C. ’Tis the season to arm ourselves with enough garland to ring the Perimeter. And multiple trees, of course—mini, midi and maxi sizes should adorn every surface. And if you can’t fi nd a warm faux fur throw, don’t forget the comfy afghans that our MeeMaws knitted in colors that blind the eye. Over the years, our family has had Walmart Christmases and Neiman Marcus Christmases. While the Neiman’s ones had better gift wrap, as long as we are all together during the holidays in our matching footed pajamas, all seems right with the world. clockwise, from top right ANTIQUE BRASS FIRE TOOLS, $875.
