editor’sletter Fall is always a special time of year around our house. The heat of the summer is behind us and we have the holidays to look forward to in quick succession. By early October, I drag out my big plastic bin labeled “Halloween” from a shelf in the storage room in a sort of symbolic rite of passage from summer to autumn. In the bin is a mixture of homemade decorations and special tchotchkes I’ve collected through the years. One of my favorite Halloween decorations is a set of terra cotta pumpkins, the size of the real thing, with lids that come

off so lit candles can be placed within them to give off a welcoming glow. When I would put them on the mantel over the fireplace each year, my daughter would comment that it was time to start thinking about her Halloween costume. Those were the days before it was called “DIY,” but we were certainly do-it-yourself-ers on those costume projects. I loved getting out candles and setting them around the house every October, too. Somehow, they seemed to set the

table. Now, lighting options abound—in my opinion, the best are fixtures that can switch from bright to a soft glow to change the mood of a room without any evidence of a fixture. If you’re in the market for improved lighting, skip the cookie-cutter options at big box stores and explore Atlanta’s bountiful showrooms and specialty retailers. For my family, October is a time of gathering together in cozy spaces to watch the leaves turn colors, light a candle inside and get to work on our Halloween costumes. What we didn’t do in October in Colorado was grill outdoors. How lucky are we in Atlanta that October is the perfect month to get out and cook? Our “Buying Guide: Outdoor Grills,” on p. 49, can give you an assist if you’re looking to buy a new grill or upgrade the old one.
