editor’sletter Get Cozy Outdoors Autumn has always been my favorite season. There’s just something about the crisp air, falling leaves and bright, beautiful colors that brings about a feeling of rejuvenation. I try to spend as much of my time as possible outdoors during the fall, but evenings can definitely get chilly, which is why an outdoor fireplace or fire pit is an absolute must for anyone who wants to fully take advantage of the season! Sure, you can always spark up a campfire, but why not enjoy your yard in convenience and style? If you’re thinking about adding an outdoor fireplace or fire pit to your yard this season, check out our feature starting on page 65 for everything you need to consider before making a purchase, including budget and safety concerns, where to install, how to create an entertaining atmosphere and more. Perhaps you’re not quite ready to install a permanent structure in your yard, but you still want to spruce up your landscape. If that’s the case, check out our fall landscaping feature beginning on page 26, which will give you some great ideas about plantings that will make your lawn beautiful this season and well into the new year. Finally, if you’re seeking some inspiration when it comes to home additions and renovations, be sure to check out the First Annual NARI Atlanta Tour of Remodeled Homes on Saturday, Oct. 2. Sixteen Atlanta-area homes will be on display, showcasing everything from three-story additions to kitchen makeovers to entire home renovations and more. For details and to purchase tour tickets, visit www. nariatlanta.org. Be sure to find us on Facebook and let us know your favorite features from the tour! One last note: our new website is coming soon! Be sure to check it out at www.atlantahomeimprovement.com for expert resources, informative articles, inspiring makeover projects and more!

What are some tips to ensure I’m not wasting money and energy this winter in my home? • Add weather stripping around entrance doors and door sweeps. These two simple things will keep cold air from drifting in and hot air from drifting out. • Install electrical outlet and light switch gaskets. These go behind the plate cover of the outlet or switch to help keep cold air from drifting in. • Make sure that windows are properly sealed to keep drafts at bay. • Purchase a plastic shrink wrap kit to seal older, non-insulated windows. • Get a programmable thermostat, which allows for different temperatures throughout the day based on your schedule. This way your unit won’t run all day. Completing these tasks can save you more than $1,200 annually. —Jarid Kossen, franchise development manager, House Doctors

What are the best green options for fireplaces?

hat do you think of when you hear the word “autumn”? For most, the image of a countryside radiant with orange-, yellow- and red-leafed trees comes to mind. Whether on the trees or in our home decor, these warm tones are synonymous with the fall season, perhaps to continue the

glow of summer as the cool weather fast approaches. And, as the leaves begin to fall from the trees on and around your home’s yard, your landscape’s spring and summer colors wilt away, leaving you in need of some fall plantings to keep your home’s exterior bright and in tune with the season. 26

“Fall is a great time to landscape,” says Patricia L. Collins, director of gardens at Callaway Gardens. “Most plants are not growing vigorously, the days are cooler and extensive watering is not usually a problem. We also tend to get more rain in late fall and winter. This gives the plants time to have active root growth while the tops of the plants are not putting on new growth. This establishes the

Taskmaster to-do’s Just like regular household chores, planting and maintenance take time. To ensure your green thumb’s time is maximized this fall—not only for fall color, but for color next spring, as well—it is best to create a schedule of tasks to keep your garden healthy and ready for winter. Shane LeBlanc, president of Selective Designs, offers the following outline:

Daily: Control the amount of moisture each plant receives so it does not drown. Make sure your yard is draining properly as the water table comes up in the winter. Proper drainage ensures growth for the plants. www.homeimprovementmag.com

Monthly: Pruning, only once, in the late winter months will ensure new growth for spring. Pruning done at the wrong time, such as at the end of summer or early fall, creates a risk for frost, and new growth stimulated will be too tender and won’t survive frost damage. One time only (this season): Place pre-emergent in your landscape shrubbery beds, not in the grass. This kills all weed seeds that established over the summer months. Also, properly plan for any hardscapes or pools you would like for the following year during these fall months. You will need time for the installation of these projects, and you will want your pool to be ready as soon as summer arrives. Britany Miller, director of marketing and sales at Miller Landscape, says a moisture meter is an important tool to ensure the success of a fall landscape job. “Continuing to water throughout the winter pushes air through the soil, while mulching your beds correctly will also ensure healthy, returning plants,” she says. Be sure to check your soil biweekly to ensure it is at a 15-percent moisture level.

Choosing your pro Armed with the schedule of work ahead of you for your fall landscape, you may find great relief in the assistance a professional can provide—especially an experienced, knowledgeable one who can guide you through making the right choices for your yard. After all, you are working with living, breathing exterior decor, and mistakes sometimes aren’t identified to the untrained eye until it is too late to save the plants. “Qualified landscape professionals will help you choose the right plant for the right place in your garden,” Collins says. “They will also know how to plant particular plants—such as not planting azaleas and rhododendrons too deeply because they are shallow-rooted.” Collins lists the following ways to find a reputable landscaper in town: • Go to highly regarded garden centers and nurseries and see who they recommend and who they have on staff. • Ask friends and neighbors who they have used. • Always ask for references. Who have they worked for? Check with their former and present clients. • Contact the Georgia Green Industry Association at www.ggia.org for a listing of landscape professionals. Also, beginning gardeners might consider joining organizations such as the Georgia Perennial Plant Association and Georgia Native Plant Society to network and learn from, and about, some local landscape professionals. With these tips and tasks at hand, your landscape will be glorious with fall color all season and in good shape for next spring! 28

Fall Plants

1. ARROWWOOD VIBURNUM (Viburnum Dentatum) This shrub has several seasons of interest and can be used as a hedge, in shrub beds and mixed borders. It provides a red color in the fall, creamy spring flowers and blue fruit that birds love in the summer. Plant it in full sun to partial shade.

Perk up your yard with these fall flowers and foliage

2. ASTER (Aster) A perennial flower with a fall bloom or an annual flower in a fall container, Asters come in just about any color—red, pink, orange and yellow are the most common. Plant these in full sun and moist, welldrained soil. 3. AUTUMN CROCUS (Colchicum) Offering pink flowers on leafless stems, this perennial bulb is great for groundcover plantings or mixed with annuals or perennials for fall bloom. Plant it in full sun to partial shade, in moist, rich soil.

1

3

4. CHRYSANTHEMUM (Dendranthema) With newer varieties hardier and lower maintenance, chrysanthemums are a great choice for borders as a perennial or in fall containers as an annual. Like asters, these flowers come in almost any color and should be planted in areas of full sun. 5. JUNEBERRY (Amelanchier) A blend between a large shrub and a small tree, this low-maintenance plant takes several years to fully establish itself, then ensures gorgeous fall colors of yellow, orange and brick red. It also provides colors in the other three seasons, along with edible fruit. You can plant it in areas of full sun or partial shade, and in moist, well-drained soil.

4

5

6. ORNAMENTAL CABBAGE AND KALE (Brassica Oleracea) An annual in most areas, it is possible for this plant to overwinter in milder regions. Offering green, decorative leaves with white, pink and/or purple coloring, you can use ornamental cabbage and kale in containers or to fill voids in flower beds—it looks great when planted with mums, asters and pansies. Plant it in full sun and in moist, well-drained soil. 7. PANSY (Viola x Wittrockiana) Blooming best when in full sun, pansies provide great fall color in an array of bold shades, including deep purples and blues, golden yellows and more. Plant these annuals in containers, mixed with perennials or to fill bare spots in annual gardens.

6

7

8

8. SWEET AUTUMN CLEMATIS (Clematis Ternifolia) Once established, this perennial vine needs yearly pruning, but provides a great vertical accent on a trellis, over an arbor or on a fence, or as a backdrop for a flower border. The vine offers tiny, white, fragrant flowers, and thrives in full sun to light shade and in moist, well-drained soil. 9. TOAD LILY (Tricrytis) While challenging to establish, once these perennial flowers take root, they provide a gorgeous purple bloom with little flowers that look like miniature orchids. Their bloom is subtle, but eye-catching when sited correctly—in a fall garden or a border. Plant them in partial shade with organic, moist, well-drained soil. 10. WITCHHAZEL (Hamamelis Virginiana) This low-maintenance shrub is best suited to border natural areas and mixed beds, providing yellow flowers. You can plant it in areas of both full sun and some shade, in well-drained to dry soil. —Melinda Myers, author and gardening expert, Melinda Myers LLC

Renovation Company: Insidesign, (770) 673-0721, www.myinsidesign.com The owners of this home wanted a kitchen that would allow them to have a place to pursue their interest in cooking. With the new, open floor plan in warm cherry, the owners can enjoy a quiet dinner at home or entertain family and friends in comfort. The project encompassed a kitchen remodel, enlarging the home office above and updating the fireplace.

Kitchen renovation 4783 Dunwoody Station, Dunwoody, 30338 Renovation Company: Weidmann & Associates Inc., (770) 552-8396, www.weidmannremodeling.com Just over 20 years ago, the Langendorfers became Weidmann & Associates’ first clients when they retained the company to replace their original kitchen. Since then, Weidmann and the Langendorfers have formed a lasting relationship, with the most recent change to their home representing their sixth project together, which will be featured on the tour. As part of this home’s kitchen update, the owners wanted a larger island, additional storage and lighter colors overall. Working with designer Linda Steenerson, the goals were achieved by combining the existing kitchen, breakfast room and dining room into a single space. Additional storage space was created with stand-alone cabinetry outside the kitchen work area; this included a custom walnut hutch embellished with German seeded glass doors, beadboard backing and a granite top.

Now, the three-story addition on this home features a basement beneath the addition, a new family room and a master bedroom suite with his-and-hers baths. An expanded bluestone patio with arbor and fireplace ties the addition into the existing house, maintaining the home’s original charm. Many of the home’s existing rooms were also updated as part of this project. The house’s historic features have been retained while it has been updated for modern life.

Entire home additions and renovations 163 Feld Ave., Decatur, 30030 Renovation Company: Home Forge Remodeling LLC, (404) 371-0102 This project increased the living space in this classic 1920s bungalow while maintaining the charm of its exterior. The existing roof structure was removed, and three bedrooms, two baths and a laundry room were added to the second floor. The den on the main floor was expanded, and a screened porch was added to the back of the home. The new master bathroom now features a large walk-in shower and under-floor heating. The high ceilings, large trim molding and tall windows maintain the original aesthetic of the home while allowing in plenty of natural light. While the home’s exterior still maintains the character of the neighborhood, the amount of interior space has doubled.

An existing sunroom was removed from the house, and a family room was added, offering a flow pattern that opened to the kitchen and dining room. A family room with a TV viewing area, a fireplace, a wine serving buffet, a game table and dramatic French doors leading to a wrap-around deck were added. The renovation also includes a new front entry with updated windows and touches of stone, stucco and cedar shingles. The front walkway and landscaping were also redesigned to create a charming feel.

Kitchen and laundry room renovation 9845 Trace Valley, Sandy Springs, 30350 Renovation Company: CSI Kitchen & Bath Studio, (770) 729-1999, www.csikitchenandbath.com The owners of this home originally wanted an addition to their house, but after evaluation, they only required some renovations. This project focused on creating a larger kitchen, a walk-in pantry and a more functional laundry facility. The laundry room features a built-in dog door beneath the counter, as well as a cabinet to conceal the ironing board. A laundry shoot was also installed for convenience. The kitchen boasts a countertop cabinet in which small appliances can be concealed, a built-in wine rack and cabinet in the existing brick wall, a larger pantry, decorative furniture legs on the island, stacked glass cabinets to display personal items and pullout cabinets.

Removing the wall allowed for the construction of an island for the owner’s commercial cook top and matching commercial hood. Special consideration was taken to support the hood, but an unforeseen challenge was discovered when the wall was removed. Additional load-bearing beams were installed to correctly brace the area. To maintain the home’s existing sense of residential style and elegance with commercial-grade appliances, sophisticated and user-friendly fixtures were added to soften the kitchen’s industrial feel.

The original full bath off the den was incorporated into the new master suite. Using this space allowed for a walk-in master shower and a larger walk-in closet. Each upstairs bathroom was completely gutted and refitted with new vanities, fixtures, floor tiles and showers. The lower level of the home now includes an office, exercise room, full bath, media room, game room and wet bar. Off the back of the house, an open-air porch with a fireplace and porcelain floor serves as an entertaining area. The exterior of the home also received a facelift, as the spotty brick was painted, and the porch floor and base of the home received a stone wrap and new slate flooring.

A long and narrow island that ends with a custom-designed glass bistro table was designed for the space and now offers plenty of storage, a second sink and a dramatic circle at the end of the island. The previous wooden floors were removed and replaced with tile, and the transitional space from the kitchen to the great room was renovated. Entire home remodel 675 Briars Bend, Alpharetta, 30004 Renovation Company: Kitchen Connections LLC, (770) 650-0632, www.kitchenconnections.biz This traditional suburban home was originally built in 1995 as a closed-plan home. The homeowner wanted a more open floor plan, as well as a larger family room, kitchen and master bath. To accomplish this, the powder room was relocated to the old laundry space. A mudroom entry was also added between the garage and the kitchen. The resulting space is casually elegant with an arched entry and cherry cabinets. The master bath is now large with a slate wet room as a primary feature, and the bonus room encases a home office with a custom desk and plenty of storage. The entire house overlooks a beautiful duck pond and future outdoor living space with stone patios, a fire pit and future water feature.

Renovation Company: Rexi Contracting LLC, (404) 597-7416 After two decades of renovating and restoring a brick bungalow built in 1916 in Historic Druid Hills, the owners of this home found themselves intimidated by the daunting task of remodeling the kitchen. Ten-foot ceilings, heart of pine flooring and plaster walls, all synonymous with an early 1900s bungalow, were a welcome challenge to Rexi and its team of trades. The kitchen was completely gutted, rewired and re-plumbed to provide the owners with the charm of yesteryear and the conveniences of today.

Renovation Company: Home ReBuilders, (404) 876-3000, www.homerebuilders.com The clients of this home were experiencing some challenges accommodating their growing family in a modest-sized Morningside bungalow. The existing attic space was renovated, creating a new second-story addition. Keeping the feel of the bungalow, the existing roofline came out the back of the house with a shed dormer, creating a beautiful master suite, in addition to two more bedrooms and baths. The front of the house remained intact with only cosmetic changes, adding a new roof and dormer on the roofline, a new front entry and copper gutters, which all amounted to increased curb appeal.

Whether you’re looking to add a new element to neighborhood barbecues or seeking a warm spot for your family to gather during the cooler months, an outdoor fireplace or fire pit will be a part of your yard that you can enjoy for years to come.

Playing with Fire In recent years, many Georgia homeowners have been looking for less maintenance and more enjoyment in their outdoor spaces. “Outdoor living spaces are very big,” says Mark Schisler, owner of Legacy Landscapes Inc. in Marietta. “One main reason people are asking for more hardscapes, including outdoor fireplaces, is that they are so easy to take care of.” Most landscapers report that homeowners are choosing outdoor fireplaces and fire pits at about an equal rate these days. When choosing which is right for you, consider the following factors:

Budget With the current economy, fire pits have become more popular than ever before. They can cost as little as $150 for a quality portable unit, or up to about $3,000 for a built-in brick or stone unit. While the price range for fireplaces varies greatly, they generally cost between $9,000 and $15,000. “Budget can certainly be the primary deciding factor; however, we work with the customer to determine what they are more likely to use and enjoy, and the space they have to work with,” says Michael Staley, president of C & M Residential Services Inc. in Marietta.

Atmosphere “A fireplace creates a large, impressive, architectural focal point, and can have the added benefit of providing screening and privacy from adjacent neighbors,” Kaldrovics says. It also brings a specific atmosphere to your space. “A fireplace and hearth can make an outdoor [space] really feel like a room,” says Tina Cook, designer and salesperson at Shady Grove Landscape Company in Lilburn. www.homeimprovementmag.com

SPECIAL SECTION

On the other hand, some people prefer the openness of a fire pit. “Fire pits make exceptional gathering places, as their structural form provides an excellent spot for ‘roundtable’ discussions,” says Thomas Boyce, president of Innovative Outdoors LLC in Duluth. “A fire pit, by nature, has a more rustic nuance than a fireplace.” Many homeowners enjoy the campfire-like atmosphere that a fire pit offers, where they can roast marshmallows or sit in a circle around the flames.

Safety Of course, depending on your yard and your family’s specific needs, there are some special considerations to keep in mind when deciding between a fireplace and a fire pit. For example, fireplaces tend to be safer than fire pits, especially if you have small children who will be playing in the outdoor area. “Fire pits have a higher risk of [accidental] fires from popping embers if natural wood is used, and you don’t have control of smoke movement,” says Ann Johnson, president of Johnson Design Group in Kennesaw.

Making Room You may be starting from scratch with an entire outdoor living space, or you may just want to add a new fireplace or fire pit as the cooler months approach. Of course, if you choose a portable fire pit, you can enjoy it almost immediately, whereas adding a custom built-in unit will take a little more consideration, but in most cases it can be installed into your existing structure.

Box of Fire

“Many companies are using Isokern fireplaces, which are made of unique, Icelandic pumice and packed in a ready-to-assemble kit, along with mortar and firebrick, which the homeowner can choose. Once assembled, the fireplace can be completed with stone, brick, stucco, etc. Because Isokern fireplaces can be built-in or assembled as freestanding units, they often take less than a day to install.”

SPECIAL SECTION

“Fireplaces are often installed as additions to existing patios, porches and decks,” Boyce says. “Generally, custom masonry fireplaces require a solid concrete foundation to ensure stability.” Building on a second-story deck or porch will require a little more creativity. “Rather than using heavy concrete block and natural stone, we use lighter materials such as concrete boards, synthetic stone and gas inserts,” Boyce says. “This allows for the look of a custom masonry fireplace without all the added weight and expense of traditional materials.” The construction of a masonry fireplace usually takes about a week, but may take longer with special add-ons such as seating or decorative mantels. Many homeowners are choosing to place fireplaces in a separate area of the yard as opposed to a patio connected to the house. When this is the case, the yard must be prepared, which may take some extra time. “The area for the fireplace needs to be graded, the foundation excavated and poured, the masonry core built, and the stone or brick veneer applied,” says Richard Marks, CEO of Outdoor Expressions LLC in Canton. One advantage of installing a fireplace or fire pit is that the space they require doesn’t have to be too large. A fireplace may occupy a 4-by-8-foot space, while a fire pit typically has a radius of about 3 to 4 feet. However, keep in mind that you’ll want to include seating and space for mingling around the main attraction. You’ll probably be using your fireplace or fire pit as a gathering spot, and you need to allow room for your entire family or group of friends to be comfortable.

Gas Logs

If you’re concerned about installing a wood-burning fireplace close to your home, consider a vent-free fireplace with gas logs. “In the past, wood-burning fireplaces were the standard, but increasingly, we see vent-free fireplaces installed outdoors, particularly on porches and covered areas,” says Vince Sutton, general manager at Log Lighter Sales Inc. Some of the benefits are: • • • •

Many vent-free gas logs have the look of real wood. They can be turned on and off whenever you decide to use them. Gas logs are available in a variety of styles and sizes for both outdoor fireplaces and fire pits. Although the material cost is the same, the labor is reduced, so you will save money.

Matching Materials Fireplaces and fire pits can be designed to match your home and the rest of your outdoor living space. Stone or fabricated stone can be used to customize pre-fab fireplaces, and Belgard pavers, which are popular in hardscaping, are also becoming popular for fireplaces. “Most of our projects are constructed with the Belgard pavers, and they always have new products and colors coming out,” says Britany Miller, director of marketing and sales for Miller Landscape in Woodstock. Flagstone is also a widely used option. “Flagstone is very popular as well, although it is a little pricier,” Miller says. “A flagstone project with sealer on it looks unbeatably rich and classic.”

Make it Personal An outdoor fireplace rarely stands alone, but instead is a focal point in an entire outdoor living space. “Typically, a fireplace sets a mood, just like in your living room,” says Adam Ardoin, owner of Landscape Studio Group. “The setup around an outdoor fireplace should be the same, with a goal of making the space as comfortable as possible. Items such as planters, rugs and even artwork are great additions.” Outdoor lighting, from gas lanterns to illuminated pathways and water features, add to the mood. “We often integrate seating walls into our fireplace designs, and we have also done built-in storage areas and firewood bins,” says Douglas Bork, landscape architect and project director for Outside Landscape Group LLC. If you want more flexible seating, outdoor furniture is another option. Some fireplaces are even part of outdoor kitchens, which include ovens, grills and built-in seating. “Ideally, these are separateuse areas—one for entertaining and one for cooking,” Kaldrovics says. “However, a nice option is to build your fireplace with a built-in wood-burning grill. It can then serve two functions: cooking and ambiance.” These built-in grills, or pizza ovens, have become increasingly popular with homeowners. The options for customizing your fireplace or fire pit are endless, but whatever you choose, you’re sure to enjoy curling up in front of the fire as winter approaches. 72

Remember Maintenance While outdoor fireplaces and fire pits are relatively low maintenance, there are a few things to remember: • Remove ash and soot with a broom and shovel on a regular basis, cooling it in a metal bucket before disposal. • Examine the inside of the structure annually to check for birds’ nests and to make sure it is free from obstructions that may prevent if from properly drawing smoke. • If you use the fireplace or fire pit for cooking, be sure to keep it clean to avoid attracting insects and animals. • An occasional light pressure washing will keep the structure clean. • Seal (or have a professional seal) the flat work with a good masonry sealant every few years to protect the stonework and help prevent oil and grease stains. • If you use a metal flue, have a professional chimney sweep clean it annually. • With fire pits, check to see that the drainage holes are open and clear. decordemon Deck the Walls Chic papers can dress up a room BY BRIAN PATRICK FLYNN Photography by Sarah Dorio

Whoever decided wallpaper was meant for Grandma Fannie or bad 1970s kitchens was totally wrong. Wallpaper has always been chic; however, the faux-painting fever of the 1990s kind of stuck wallpaper on the “do not try this at home” list. If you’ve thought wallpaper wasn’t meant for you for reasons involving taste, expense or application, you may want to rethink—it’s possible your walls are missing out.

SPINNING VINYL

Textured metallic vinyls (such as Vivid: Black & White from Graham & Brown) are an excellent way to bring sheen and pattern into kid-dwelling, high-traffic breakfast nooks or dining rooms. With so many styles available today, your walls can be retro-inspired but not dated, gender-neutral for him and her and, most importantly, childproof.

BEING FRAMED

Mural-like papers are an excellent way to use wallcoverings as art. This Blackbird paper from Cavern Home was a higher price-point and more delicate than lower price-point options. To use it both effectively and practically, I added it in a long, dark hallway, then framed it with crown molding for a pop of pattern.

UP IN PIECES

Huh? Wallpaper on cinder block walls? Yep. This is a trick I came up with a while back to soften the cold, industrial look of concrete blocks. It’s easier to do than you’d think. Simply attach 4x8 sheets of stain-grade plywood to the cinder block wall with glue or liquid nails. After it sets, cover each 4x8 sheet with wallpaper (like we did here with Ornate: Blue from Graham & Brown). You can butt each panel up against the other for a solid, continuous effect or space them apart for a fractured look.

Furniture Buying Guide

new look without the cost New furniture isn’t always necessary (or

The rules of shopping well

cost-effective). Reworking older furniture

BY KIMBERLY HOLLAND

is a great way to get what you’re looking for without spending big bucks. Here are a few ways:

➤ Reupholstering: If you’ve found the perfect sofa or armchair but don’t really like its plaid fabric, seek out a professional upholsterer and change up the fabric.

➤ Slipcovering: A fast and affordable way to alter the look of a seat is a slipcover. Try Sure Fit covers, which cost less than $100; www.surefit.net.

➤ Painting or refinishing: As long as the furniture isn’t an antique (100 years or older), painting or refinishing is a simple way to freshen up a beaten surface. Photo courtesy of Adam Belanger, Adam Belanger Photography, www.adambelangerphoto.com

In an ideal world, buying furniture would be best described as an easy task. Your home would be a blank canvas and your pocketbook would be without limit. But in reality, that’s just not the case. Here are expert tips to help you in your furniture-buying quest. How to … decide what you need Save some time, money and frustration by drawing up a game plan. Take inventory of what you will keep, and rid rooms of furniture that isn’t used often enough to merit the occasional dusting. Sell spare furniture in the classifieds, give it to a young family member decorating her first apartment or donate it to a non-profit organization. How to … measure your space Employ an old-fashioned tape measure to find the distance from wall to wall. Or, splurge and purchase a new laser tape measure and let it do the work for you. When all the measurements are collected (don’t forget to measure from baseboards and include windowsills), create a to-scale layout of the room where 1 foot of a room equals a 1/4 inch on paper. How to … mix and match pieces and styles When it comes to mixing furniture, the key is to blend all elements of a room together. For example, try using an accent color throughout the room or one kind of wood to help weave a common thread. While you might not want to mix styles that were designed to be worlds apart (like Victorian and Arts and Crafts), you can incorporate each of those with other genres. How to … mix and match patterns and colors If you have a very large-scale print, either mix it with something that is equal in proportion or go with something that is much smaller in proportion. An itty-bitty polka dot, for example, shouldn’t be put with a tiny stripe. Pair that small polka dot with a big stripe. When it comes to two shades of the same color, you either want them to have a greater divergence or to match perfectly. 78

ATLANTA HOME IMPROVEMENT OCTOBER 2010

1010_078-079_DesignFurniture.ind78 78

➤ Adding new hardware: Rolled brass handles may date your chest of drawers, but an effortless change of hardware can completely update it. Handle and hinge options are plentiful at local hardware stores and national home centers.

how well is it built? The first thing you should do when looking at furniture is ask to see the underside. Solid construction is vital to good quality in furniture. If it doesn’t look like it could withstand a few years of use, it probably won’t. If the sofa needs to last at least 15 years, spend a little more money to make sure it suits your long-term needs.

budget buys Focus on furnishing the main areas of your house, such as the dining room or the master bedroom, with quality furniture. When those are furnished, budget-buy the rest.

did you know? 86 percent of plastic water bottles used in the United States become garbage or litter, and bottles buried in a landfill can take up to 1,000 years to biodegrade, which means in-home filters are a more eco-friendly option, as well.

Studies have shown that bottled water can be bad for your wallet, health and the planet. So what is the best alternative? Here’s a quick overview of the options available for filtering your home’s tap water. Faucet filters and pitchers Faucet-mounted water filters easily install on your kitchen faucet and are a good choice if you want to use filtered water for things other than drinking, such as making coffee or cooking.

here’s to your health The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) tests U.S. tap water for approximately 90 contaminants under

Pitcher filters are an easy option as well—simply fill the pitcher with tap water, which is filtered when you pour. Pitchers may not be a good option for large families who can tire of refilling it. On average, both faucet and pitcher filter cartridges need to be replaced every 1 to 3 months.

Undersink filters An undersink filter may be the right option if you prefer your filter out of sight. Undersink filters typically attach to the water pipe under the sink, and professional installation is usually recommended. The benefits to undersink filters are the speed of filtration and the filter cartridges typically last longer—up to 6 months in most cases.

Whole-house filters A whole-house filter attaches to your home’s water main, providing filtered water throughout the entire house. The units themselves tend to be inexpensive, and most experts recommend hiring a plumber for installation. Studies show that, in general, whole-house filters work best at preventing dirt, sediment and rust from entering the water supply, and filters typically last 6 months.

quick tip

Do you need a water filter? One of the benefits of in-home water filtration is the cost savings. For a family drinking 240 gallons annually, water from a filter pitcher costs about $75 per year versus more than $200 per year for the least expensive brand of bottled water. The benefits and savings make an in-home filtration system worth your while. 80

bottled water doesn’t have to meet these standards, so it isn’t tested as often for bacteria. In addition, bottles exposed chemicals like phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA), both linked to birth defects and cancer.

Make sure to always have a replacement filter on hand. When choosing an in-home filtration system, look for a well-known, easily available brand so filters will be easy to find and purchase.

Eco-friendly lighting options for your home

Check out these design tips from local professionals.

➤ “Lighting can be “fun”ctional. It can function as well as a piece of art for the home or office. Don’t take it too seriously. Work with a professional to help you achieve your goals, and don’t be afraid to say you don’t like something. ‘No’ is as good as ‘yes’ when getting across your taste and style.” —Michael Fortson, Illuminations

Want to go green with your lighting options? Consider the following three factors. Products

for your application. If you have questions, ask a sales representative. If you are redoing a large portion of lighting or are switching out fixtures to newer technologies, go

The first rule of thumb is to change your incandescent light bulbs to compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs or light-emitting diode (LED) installations. When purchasing a CFL, be aware that many of them have a “warm-up” time, meaning they do not achieve 100-percent brightness as soon as they are switched on; however, the technology continues to improve and several manufacturers now offer “instant-on” bulbs. They’re are also available in a variety of shades of light including “soft” or “warm.”

LED lights, tough also still evolving, can offer up to more than a 6-to-1 ration decrease in energy use compared to a halogen bulb. “LEDs contain no mercury and consume a fraction of the energy used compared with CFLs or standard bulbs,” says Jonathan Eppstein of Redbird Industries. “They are also much lower weight to ship and, because of their physical toughness, require no bulky, special protective packaging, thus reducing the carbon footprint even more.”

—Doug Root, Atlanta Light Bulbs

Design You can reduce your energy usage by creating an efficient lighting design, and one way to do that is through the use of dimmers. Eppstein recommends looking into intelligent dimmers and on/off switches that turn lights off or dim them when rooms are empty. Another notable product is door contacts, which turn lights on and off when doors open and close.

➤ “Unless you have a strong knowledge of and experience with lighting, it’s always better to have a professional step in, especially when dealing with dimmers and switches.” —Carl Strandberg, Sunbelt Technology

NOTES

Practices The final way you can save energy with lighting is by making sure the lights are off when they’re not needed. “Simply making certain that lights are turned off when rooms are empty can save significant amounts of energy in the average dwelling,” Eppstein says. With these three ways to decrease your lighting energy usage in mind, you have the green light to begin your savings—both monetarily and environmentally. 82

Fall is in the air and, even more important than scheduling your mountain “leaf trip” is scheduling an inspection and evaluation of your comfort air system. That process needs to include not only a functional inspection of the heating/cooling apparatus, but also the duct system, thermostats, filters, humidification devices and insulation. Keeping your home cozy and comfortable at the lowest cost is the goal. Naturally, the mechanical part of the overall inspection is vital to reliable operation of the system. Internal computer controls are the brain of the mechanicals but fans, heat sensors, automatic switches and other electrical or electronic components are subject to a surprising amount of wear during normal operation. Even something as simple as wall switches deteriorate with every on-off cycle, and the numerous control switches in a HVAC system are cycled constantly. The duct system is more complex than it might seem from the surface. In addition to the static distribution system, internal baffles and surface diffusers affect the balanced distribution of comfort air. Duct cleanliness and condition of duct insulation have a significant effect on both air quality and on economical delivery of the air you have spent money to heat. Replacing flexible ducts with rigid, well-insulated metal ducting means better air flow and cleaner air. The spirals in flexible ducting impede air flow and collect detritus that becomes a home for micro-critters. Thermostat design and location can have a measurable impact on how well your HVAC system works. Typically, thermostats are centrally located for convenience of access in the hope that they will register some sort of median temperature. With that approach, it is hardly surprising that multi-level homes or those with complex floor plans have hot spots and cold ones. Relocation of the thermostat may help, or the installation of area thermostats to control zoned duct baffles may be required. www.homeimprovementmag.com

9/8/10 1:43:44 PM

Two aspects of air filtration are also important: filter location and filter type. A periodic inspection and consult with your HVAC professional will ensure that filter access allows easy replacement—a clogged filter will stress the whole system—and that the filter housing prevents infiltration of unwanted air, especially if the furnace is located in a crawlspace or dirt floor basement. Considering how much is said about moisture reduction, it might seem strange to recommend moisture addition. During the heating season, however, having a humidifier in place within the HVAC complex could go far in cutting down on morning nose bleeds, hardwood floor separation or even furniture cracks. Winter humidity is normally low and heating the air effectively reduces its relative humidity even further. In other words, since the air can hold more moisture, it will draw that moisture out of you. An overall inspection helps determine if your system needs moisture augmentation. An energy audit is also a money saver. Utility companies and heating professionals offer this service. Targeted insulation application and scrupulous blocking of penetrations through the home envelope go a long way in saving energy dollars. Remember: fall inspection prior to heating season and spring inspection prior to cooling season—simple steps to ensure you stay comfortable and that more of your money stays in your pocket.

october Tips for creating and maintaining a beautiful garden BY MARY KAY WOODWORTH

Warm days and cool evenings are traditionally the norm for October, but this year’s weather patterns have been unpredictable! Late in the month is when fall planting season really begins, so plan now for fall and winter landscaping. Garden Maintenance

➤ For good germination, your newly seeded fescue should be kept moist, and leaves should be removed as they fall. Lightly rake or use a low setting on your leaf blower so new turf is not damaged.

➤ A few summer annuals will bloom until frost; pull out the rest and add them to the compost pile.

➤ Dig up and brush soil from roots of dahlia, caladium and cannas tubers and store in a dry, cool basement until planting next spring.

➤ Take advantage of a last harvest of summer herbs, such as basil and dill. Freeze and dry them for use throughout the winter.

➤ If you still have a few tomato plants, watch the thermometer! If the daytime

temperature falls below 65 degrees, pick the remaining fruit and let it ripen

➤ It’s time for fall cleanup in the yard. Aside from raking leaves from your lawn, remove fallen leaves and petals from the rose garden and perennial beds. This will discourage pests from hiding out all winter and help to control fungal diseases next spring and summer.

➤ Hate to add bags of yard waste to the landfill? Make your own compost. Use grass clippings, fall leaves and kitchen waste to create your own nutrient-rich soil amendments. Your county extension agent has plenty of information to get your started.

➤ If spring- and summer-blooming perennials have leaves and stems that have turned brown, cut them back now. Many perennials can also be divided and transplanted this month.

➤ House plants should come back inside if nighttime temperatures fall below 50 degrees. Check for insects

and, if necessary, spray them with appropriate insecticides before they are moved back into the house.

What to Plant

➤ You can still plant fescue seed, but you’ll need to complete this before leaves cover the lawn. Lime and

fertilize as needed, but don’t apply a pre-emergent weed killer, as it will prevent weed and grass seeds from germinating.

➤ Wait for cool daytime temperatures before you plant pansies, snapdragons, violas, mustard, ornamental cabbage, kale and dianthus. Fertilize and water after planting and throughout the growing season.

➤ Fall is the best time to plant many perennials in the garden. Make sure that they receive plenty of water (pay

SATURDAY in Atlanta on

attention to how much rain we receive) and do not apply fertilizer until spring. Mulch lightly, as excess mulch can cause crown rot.

➤ Paperwhites, daffodils, amaryllis and hyacinths are winter season brighteners. Start them in late October so they’ll be in bloom for the holidays and after.

Expert Tips, News and Happenings from Atlanta’s Home Improvement Community COMPILED BY SHELBY STEVENS

Expert Q&A

This way your unit won’t run all day.

hat do you think of when you hear the word “autumn? For most, the image of a countryside

radiant with orange-, yellow- and red-leafed trees comes to mind. Whether on the trees or in our home decor, these warm tones are synonymous with the fall season, perhaps to continue the

glow of summer as the cool weather fast approaches. And, as the leaves begin to fall from the trees on and around your home’s yard, your landscape’s spring and summer colors wilt away, leaving you in need of some fall plantings to keep your home’s exterior bright and in tune with the season. www.homeimprovementmag.com

The owners of this Sandy Springs home wanted to upgrade their cramped, dated kitchen to a more modern, free-flowing space while also turning their rarely used screened porch into a sunroom that blended with the rest of the home. To keep within budget, the experts at SawHorse Inc. used the existing footprint of the home to create a kitchen and sunroom that seamlessly flowed into each other. For four months the team worked to remodel the kitchen and encase the porch, all the while keeping the project green by using Low-E windows and Icynene insulation. By using this particular insulation along with energy-efficient windows, an updated HVAC was not needed to accommodate the new space. The kitchen and sunroom were remodeled with hardwood floors throughout, and new Kraftmaid cabinetry was installed. The resulting renovation brings more functionality and style to the living space, and the owners have the satisfaction of knowing their home makeover was completed with the environment in mind.
