Annual Report 2020

GREETINGS, FRIENDS. 2020 is finally in our past – can you believe it? The past year threw us a lot of curveballs, but I am so proud of the way our team pulled together to keep the spirit of the Athenaeum alive throughout everything. Between our staff, our tenants, our Board, our volunteers, and all of our amazing partners, the Athenaeum is fortunate to have surrounded itself with creative thinkers and passionate people who support what we do. Though this past year has been a bit of an “unprecedented” problem, it hasn’t been all bad. In fact, a lot of things happened for which we’re thankful. We welcomed the Indiana Performing Arts Centre as a new tenant to the building in 2020, and we are excited to continue developing our partnership and supporting their mission of keeping the heritage of Black Theatre alive in Indy. We’ve also seen our office staff continue to develop, with erin marshall stepping into the role of Events Manager and Patrick Rutledge joining the team as our Office Manager. At first glance, it might seem like the pandemic has slowed us down, but it’s really given us a great opportunity to do some internal evaluation and hone in on what makes our building and our Foundation special. We’ve taken this opportunity to try different things with our programming, engage our staff and volunteers in new ways, and set organizational goals and strategies that will help us maximize our potential as a center for German heritage, culture, and the arts in Indianapolis. Between implementing new safety protocols and finding new sources of revenue, we still found time to present all of the heritage events that our

community has come to know and love. In 2020, we pioneered new virtual approaches to several events, but we also found a way to bring you a safe and socially distant GermanFest experience in person. In fact, we’ve discovered new ways to combine the virtual and in person elements of our First Fridays and heritage events that will continue to make our programming widely accessible for years to come. If you haven’t experienced one of our at-home party packs yet, you’re missing out! For me, one of the biggest highlights of the year was finalizing the Block 20 development project next door. Bringing us amenities such as covered and secure parking, additional residential property, and new and exciting retail opportunities, this project is going to make our little corner of Lockerbie one of the most hopping places in the Mile Square! Construction is already under way, and the project will be completed before you know it. In the meantime, grab some coffee at Coat Check, enjoy some art in the ArtSpace, and catch a live performance or two in the historic Basile Theatre! It goes without saying (but I’m going to say it anyway) that YOU are the heartbeat of this building. We simply could not do the things we do without the support of our patrons, donors, and volunteers. We have relied on our network of supporters more than ever, and you have shown us just how special our relationship is with this community. While things aren’t quite back to 100% yet, you can still continue to support us by attending our events and making taxdeductible donations to the Foundation. You can find more information on our website at athenaeumindy. org. We look forward to seeing your face (at least the top half) in person as soon as we can!

(Heartfelt thanks)

THANK YOU FOR SHARING 2020 WITH US.
