2018 ANNUAL REPORT

GUTEN TAG, DEAR FRIENDS! The last three months, my first, have been a whirlwind

of learning, growing, adjusting, and having to resist the temptation to eat all the sauerkraut at the Rathskeller. I am happy to say, having one of the city’s best YMCAs in our building has helped keep the waistline from expanding. 2018 was an absolutely amazing year of achievement for the Athenaeum. It saw the opening of our green space, the Pocket Park, along the west side of the building and the soundproofing of our century-old theatre, allowing organizations like Young Actors Theatre and Kids Dance Outreach the opportunity to offer additional evening programming all while the Biergarten offers polka music well into the night. We hosted our 10th Germanfest! Many steins of beer were hoisted that day while the wiener dogs ran their little hearts out. One of the most momentous accomplishments from last year was the addition of the Das Deutsche Haus plaque above the main doors of the building – reminding us that although the past cannot be rewritten, we should take pride in who we are and where we come from. If you thought 2018 was a great year, wait until you see what we have in store for 2019! We’re adding a Public Collection art installation to our Pocket Park, which will be a beautiful structure providing literature curated by the Indianapolis Public Library, cleaning and preserving the front face of our National Landmark, and kicking off projects to make the Biergarten more accessible for ALL patrons. Obviously, we can’t do anything without the support of you, our community. So whether you are looking for your next night out, one of the city’s best cups of coffee, or that place to focus on a sound mind and body, make sure to visit us here at the historic Athenaeum. Prost,

Craig Mince Athenaeum Foundation President
