2017 Athenaeum Foundation Annual Report

Page 1

Thank you for supporting this National Historic Landmark. This past year we have seen quite a transformation of historic space into a third space. Don’t know what that means? That’s ok, I didn’t either until we embarked on this project! A third space is a public gathering space, and Indy is a little short on them. So, as we transformed the lobby into Mass Ave’s living room, it was an invitation for the community to gather. • YMCA members meeting after a workout • YAT parents relaxing while kids are in class • Business meetings and interviews • Students studying and collaborating • Individuals working with their mobile office • Neighbors finding a quiet nook to read a book The space is truly serving all! We have been blown away by the magic of the combination of amazing coffee and unique space in addition to how well it has been received by the community. Did I mention the national attention? In the last year we were mentioned in The New York Times, Forbes, and Architectural Digest; that’s PR that we could never have been able to afford if not for the unique reuse of this historic treasure for Indianapolis.

The theatre soundproofing project is the final stage of the Makeover On Mass Ave. capital campaign that was launched in 2016. The soundproofing is now underway and should be completed this Spring! This will decrease noise polllution from the Biergarten into the theatre space and will allow these popular venues to co-exist more harmoniously.

GERMANFEST 10!

2018 has and will bring many amazing changes to this building. But it’s also a big year to celebrate the 10th Annual GermanFest! Since the inaugural event that took place in 2009 this event has become a must attend for Hoosiers growing from 400 attendees to over 6,500 in 2017. Save Saturday, October 13, 2018 in your calendars now so you don’t miss this one of a kind event that includes all things German, a strongman competition, yodeling contest, Durstig Games and of course, you can’t forget the wiener dog races!

April will bring the formal opening of the pocket park along New Jersey Street on the west side of the building. The Athenaeum is working together with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful on adding another green space in to downtown Indy for not only building patrons, but for the community to use and enjoy time in the outdoors. On February 22, 1918 this beautiful building changed its name from Das Deutsche Haus to the Athenaeum. The name change was a casualty of war but on February 22, 2018— exactly one hundred years later—we are thrilled to have the original Das Deutsche Haus plaque proudly restored on this National Historic Landmark thanks to Indiana German Heritage Society.
