The Texas Hill Country and the HCBA are in a growth spurt! And this year’s Parade of HomesTM is evidence to the fact, with 10 homes in both the Fredericksburg and Highland Lakes marketplaces with a diverse showing of homes ranging from $450,000 to more than $1 million, ranging in all types of architecture and home settings. We hope you will enjoy touring our homes and getting to know our Association and its professional members.

JUDGING With every HCBA Parade of HomesTM, the process of deciding who and what to celebrate comes through professional judges. Judges must balance all of the details of nine unique homes and assess each home respective to the cost, use of land features, and furnishings. Judges are brought into the Hill Country from outside the market to assure fairness and eliminate personal biases toward builders or their Parade partners.

This year’s Volunteer Judges are: Dave Yelovich – Building Done Right (Houston), Sue Pinger – Texas Association of Builders Executive Board (Austin), Jason Carruthers – Carruthers Homes (Temple), Lucy Katz – Katz Builders & Remodelers (Austin), LuAnne Butler – Builder, Luanne Butler Homes (Waco), Janet Hobbs – Hobbs Ink, AIBD Home Designer (Austin), Brent Massey – Casa Domaine (San Antonio), and Courtney Black – Permian Homes (Midland).

The homes are judged in three price categories ranging from $450,000 to $1 million in value, not including the lot.

Awards are given in six categories: Kitchen/Dining, Master Suite/Bath, Interior Design, Elevation/Floor Plan, Outdoor Living, Specialty Feature, and Best of Parade. The winners will be announced at a special award party put on by The Bath and Kitchen Showplace/Moore Supply (Marble Falls & Fredericksburg). Awards will be prominently displayed in each of the Parade homes, and ColdSpring Residential of Marble Falls has handcrafted granite trophies that anyone would be proud to show in their home.

You too can be a judge! Every weekend of the Parade, ballots for the People’s Choice Award are located at each of the homes. Make sure that you complete your ballot, write your full name and contact information on the back, and leave it in a ballot box. One entry per ticket holder, please. We have all seen it, and many have teared up when the smooth emotional voice of Paul Harvey describes the American farmer while we see pictures of the very familiar working life that farmers choose to live. If Paul Harvey was still around, he wouldn’t have to dig very deep to evoke emotions about those Americans who choose to build Imagine a sweaty man with a tool belt hung low on his hips and a power saw in his hands.

On the job site before dawn and now chasing sunset, he has measured twice, broadened his stance, and squints carefully before he cuts one of some 10,000 boards of the typical single family home. And God made a builder.

Zoom in to worn-through knees of a man’s jeans and work boots where steel toes are exposed with wear. He isn’t sitting in his truck on a job site; he is sitting in a city office or bank. Waiting to be heard. Waiting to be respected. Waiting to be approved to do his work and keep all the balls in the air — in order and everyone happy — with only his name on the dotted line, responsible for a sum of money worth more than any home he will ever own.

And God made a builder.

If you hear a cell phone ring 300 times a day, and it keeps ringing at night when you see a man leaning over his dining room table, not to eat but to review the next set of plans. God made a builder.

Hopefully you can see the smile, a slight grin of satisfaction when that same man welcomes a step family to walk through the front door for the first time with a key in their hand. It is their key — of their front door — for you built them a home. The smile shows that you are providing a place of safety, memories, and investment that will last a lifetime. And God made a builder.
