OVERVIEW

Autism Spectrum Disorder affects various aspects of the day-to-day function of a person who is diagnosed, such as communication skills, behaviors, sensations, and social interactions due to the lack of neurological development that createsalong-termintellectualeffectfrom the condition. Although autism can be diagnosed at any age, it is described as a “developmental disorder” because symptomsgenerallyappearinthefirsttwo years of life (USDHHS). Being on the spectrum can have an effect and toll on those with the condition and their caretaker, such as the simple things of takingthemtoanewschoolornewdoctor since they are more used to and comfortableintheirlong-termsettingsand with maintaining a consistent daily routine. This is why having at least one day a year to celebrate, provide support, and advocate for autism for both the one diagnosed and the caretaker could give a sense of comfort, joy, acceptance, and understanding.

SUPPORT

AutisticPrideDay,establishedin2005,isan annual event that serves to advocate amplify the importance of accepting and understanding autism It is a day to honor andrecognizetheuniquestrengths,talents, and accomplishments of people with autism. More than just a celebration, it is a platform for education and understanding. Itprovidesasafespaceforindividualswith ASD and their caretakers, while also educating the public about the condition. This increased awareness can lead to a more knowledgeable and understanding society.

SUMMARY

Although Autistic Pride Day occurs once time a year, it should be celebrated and advocatedeverydaytosupportthosewith the condition and their caretakers. This will allow us to remind those who don’t have ASD that those diagnosed are still human and should be treated with kindness and respect.

April marks the observance of STI Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raisingawarenessabouttheimplications of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) within our community. It serves as an opportunity to educate and dismantle the negative misconceptions surrounding STIs. This month also includes STI awareness week, encompassingthesecondweekofApril.

UNDERSTANDING OF STI

The most common types of STIs include human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), chlamydia, and gonorrhea, which can all pose serious health risks if left untreated. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Surveillance Report conducted in 2022, approximately 2.5 million STIs were reported to have occurred in the United States, highlighting the profound impact these infections have had on individuals in our society. While engaging in sexual intercourse is a standard mode for transmission, it is significant to recognize that it is not the only way. Through skinto-skin contact, sharing needles, and eventhroughpregnancy,theseinfections canstillbetransmittedtootherbeings.

Prevention is key because many of these infections can be challenging to detect; the likelihood of having one is not unlikely.Therefore,minimizing

transmission through methods such as STI testing and immediate medical treatment oncedetectedisessential.Youcandothis! Though the most effective means of preventing transmission is complete abstinence, you can still be mindful when engaging in sexual activity through protected sex. Additionally, open communication with sexual partners about STI status and sexual health can help reducetheriskoftransmission.

Commonillnessesrelatedto poororalhealtharetooth decay,gumdisease,and mouthandthroatcancer (CentersforDiseaseControl andPrevention[CDC],2024). By34yearsold,atleast80% ofadultshaveexperienced onecavity,andmorethan 40%ofindividualshave sufferedmouthpainwithin thepastyear.Everyyear, Americansspendover124 billiondollarsonexpenses associatedwithdentalcare.

Dentalemergencieshave causedchildrenand educationalstafftolose34

million hours of schooling, which equates to 45 billion dollars in lost productivity because of these unintended treatments. Evenworse,poororalhealth has been connected with other chronic ailments, includingheartdiseaseand diabetes. Consuming sugary foods and drinks and smoking cigarettes are also associated with bad oralhealth(CDC,2024).

A primary prevention strategy that helps combat this public health issue is the fluoridation of community waters, which has been proven as an effective intervention to stoptoothdecayandassist people in saving on dental costs. Unfortunately, this is not enough because individuals still must practice good oral hygiene, such as brushing teeth, flossing, and dental checkups for teeth maintenance and cavity prevention. Approximately 10%ofadolescentstwoto

yearsoldhavecavitiesthatgountreated, morethan50%ofkidssixtoeightyearsofage haveonecavityintheirprimaryteeth,greater than50percentofjuvenilesages12to19have experiencedacavityinoneoftheirpermanent teeth,25%ofadultsages20to64suffered untreatedtoothdecay,andmorethan90 percentofadultshavehadacavityintheir lifetimeFrom2009to2014,nearly40%ofadults aged30yearsandolderexperiencedgum disease,andsmokingcigarettesincreases yourchancesofdevelopinggumdisease.

IntheUnitedStates,mouthandthroatcancer caused10,000deathsin2016,andabout45,000 newincidencesoforalcancerwerereported thatsameyear.Oralcancerisoftencausedby smokingandchewingtobacco,engagingin high-risksexualbehavior,andexcessive alcoholconsumption.Peoplediagnosedwith oralcancerhavea61%survivalrateoffive years.High-risksexualbehaviorhasbeen linkedtotheoralHumanPapillomaVirus,which issexuallytransmittedandaffectsthebackof thethroat(CDC,2024).

Oraldiseasesareamongthemostcommon chronicillnessesandconditionsglobally, impactingabout3.5billionindividualsinlow— andmiddle-incomenations.Poororalhealth disproportionatelyimpactsdisadvantaged andsusceptiblepeoplewithlowsocialand economicstatus.Thesepeopleinclude childreninearlychildhoodandolderpeople, regardlessoftheirincomelevelOralhealth issueswillcontinuetorisebecauseofhuman agingandtheworld'sgrowingpopulation (WorldHealthOrganization,2024).

PREVENTION STRATEGIES

Peoplecantakeseveral preventivemeasurestohelp them reduce oral health problems. It is essential to visit a dentist once or twice annually, brush your teeth twice daily, floss them once daily, select healthier foods, quit smoking, drink fewer sugar drinks, and consume more water. If someone is scared to visit a dentist, try to relax and speak to them about their concerns. The dentist can help make that individual feel more comfortable during the exam. If someone cannot afford dental care, check their state's programs for free and low-cost options for children and older people. Community clinics may also offer an affordable sliding payment scale for other adults who do not qualify for state and federal programs that provide dental care (The Office on Women'sHealth,2021).

SweetPotatoToast: ACrunchyTwiston AvocadoDelight!

For a gluten-free twist on the beloved avocado toast, substitute the usual bread with slices of sweet potato. This recipe not only caters to your dietary needs but also provides a nutritious meal. Diced walnuts, packed with healthy fats, provide an extra layer of texture, and a sprinkle of red pepper flakes elevates the flavor with a spicy kick.

Ingredients

2 sweet potatoes

2 avocados, thinly sliced

½ cup walnuts, diced

1-½ tsp red pepper flakes, plus more if desired

4 tsp extra-virgin olive oil

Instructions

1. To toast in a toaster, insert the sweet potato planks until tender. Depending on your toaster, this may require several cycles.

To prepare the sweet potatoes, slice a thin plank off one side lengthwise to create a stable base. This plank will help cut the sweet potatoes into toast-sized slices Position the sweet potato flat and slice it into approximately ¼ inches thick planks.

Every May, we unite as a community to raise awareness about ALS, share stories of those affectedbythedisease,expresssolidaritywith caregivers, families, and care workers, and honorthosecommittedtofindingacure.

MyPersonalStory

Mygreat-grandmother,whowas74yearsold, passed away from ALS earlier this year, which has influenced my life. She knew what she wanted to tell us but could not, so she was stuck in her head. Even though her body hurt physically, it hurt to see that she was unable to interact with us in the same way. We tried to keep her comfortable, but she would get angry when we couldn't figure out what she neededorwantedfromus.

Myheartbrokeseeingherinsuchpain;itwas physically exhausting. As a 14-year-old, I provided my great-grandmother with much support and care throughout this trying time

Seeing a strong woman who assisted in taking care of me pass away in such a brutal manner became very tough She simply looked so depressed toward the end and turned into an empty shell. I want to follow in herfootstepsandbecomeanursebecauseof mymemoriesofcaringforher.Bysharingmy experience and raising awareness, I hope to improvethelivesofothers.

Individuals with ALS have a 99% mortality rate. Breathing difficulties, jaundice, and insomnia can accompany ALS. ALS cannot be cured, althoughtreatmentcanassist MostALSpatients who are in the latter stages of the disease are unable to walk, require assistance getting around, or use a wheelchair or crutches Many also need a feeding tube and are incapable of speaking,eating,ordrinking.

Either genetics or aging-related DNA distortions cancauseALS.Youcanspendtimewithaloved onewhohasALSandholdtheirhand,writethem cards, or play music for them to help them say goodbye. To assist them, be aware of their suffering without becoming overly demanding; you don't want an ALS patient to believe that theycausedyouanygrieforworry.

World No Tobacco Day, observed on May 31, aims to draw attention to the negative consequences of tobacco use and increase understandingoftheadvantagesofquitting smoking. "Protecting Children from Tobacco IndustryInterference"isthisyear'stheme.

The emergence of electronic cigarettes and other new tobacco and nicotine products poses a threat to youth and tobacco control despitenotablegainsinloweringtobaccouse.

According to recent research by the World Health Organization titled "Hooking the Generation," there are more children than adults who use tobacco products worldwide, withanestimated37millionchildrenbetween theagesof13and15usingthem.

It is dangerous for anyone to consume tobacco products, especially young people. Nicotine, an addictive substance that impairs brain development, is an ingredient in tobacco products and vape pens. Since youngpeople'sbrainscontinuedeveloping

until they are 25, they are somewhat vulnerable. Nowadays, manufacturers of vape devices and nicotine intentionally target young adults and minors with their "funflavors."

HeadachesandMigraines: RecognizingSigns&Symptoms

June is National Headache & Migraine Awareness Month. Migraines affect up to 10%oftheworld’spopulation.That’s800millionpeopleworldwidethatsufferfrom thisdebilitatingillness.Effectiveheadachemanagementcandependonage,the typeofheadacheoccurring,andwhethertheheadacheisprimaryorsecondary. Treatments can range from stress management to medications to trigger avoidance.Let’stakeacloselookatheadachesandmigraines.

WHATISAHEADACHE?

A headache is discomfort or pain in the face or head. There are three main types of headaches: cluster headaches,tensionheadaches, andmigraines.Aprimary headacheiswhenthe headacheisthemedical problem,whilea secondaryheadacheis relatedtoan underlyingmedical problem,suchashigh bloodpressureora sinusinfection.

Migraines are a complex neurological conditionthatcanbedebilitatingand intense.Theycanlastseveralhoursto severaldays,andunliketension orclusterheadaches,are pulsatinginnatureandoften affectonesideofthehead significantlymore.

Womenare upto4xmore likelyto experience migraines.

MIGRAINECAUSES

Thespecificcauseofmigrainesisnot fully understood, but triggers can range from foods, hormones, environmental factors, stress, and sleep. Due to hormonal influences, women are more likely to experience migraineheadachesthanmen.

Emotional stress and hormonal changes are two of the most common triggers of a migraine headache in women. During stressful events, chemicals are released in the body to combat the “fight or flight” response, along with increased muscle tension and dilated blood vessels. In women, menstruation can trigger migraines through changes in estrogenlevels.

RAISINGAWARENESS

Advocate for improved patient care and access to treatments locally and nationally, such as lobbying for increasedresearchfunding. Invest in patients through education. Education on migraines and their treatments is vital for providers, patients,andthepublictodecrease stigma and increasethe qualityofcare.

MIGRAINESYMPTOMS

When experiencing a migraine, some common sensitivities and symptoms occur. These include but are not limited to throbbing pain, aura, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, weakness and fatigue, neck stiffness ornumbness,scalptenderness,nasal congestion, and sensitivity to lights, sounds,andsmells.

When a new headache or a very severe headache occurs, please contact your physician. Most headaches can be manages with over-the-counter medications, but a provider can prescribe preventive andabortivemigrainemedications.
