HISTORY
CITY HISTORY & HISTORIC ATTRACTIONS
West Bend, the seat of Washington County, gets its name from its location on a westward bend of the Milwaukee River. Before the United States claimed the Wisconsin territory in 1833, the area was home to the Potawatomi and Menominee Indians. Settlers were attracted to West Bend by the Milwaukee River and the advantages it afforded industry and farming.
Established in 1845, the village became a convenient midway stop between Milwaukee and Fond du Lac. The arrival of the railroad in 1873 spurred a period of rapid growth and expansion.
Between the 1840s and the 1870s West Bend was largely settled by Yankee migrants from New York
and New England and immigrants from Germany and Ireland. By the 1880s, German immigrants and their descendants comprised
three-quarters of the local population. The City of West Bend was incorporated in 1885 and quickly became an important center of commerce and industry.
WEST BEND, FOUNDED IN 1845, SITS ON THE MILWAUKEE RIVER AND WAS A NATURAL STOPPING POINT FOR TRAVELERS BETWEEN MILWAUKEE AND FOND DU LAC
Visitors will find several opportunities to learn more about the rich history of the area. Visiting the Old Courthouse Museum,
located in the Tower Heritage Center, is truly a trip back in time. Learn the history of Washington County beginning with the glacier era. Enjoy interactive displays, kids’ activities, special events, and research. Stepping into the Old Sheriff’s Residence and Jail is like stepping into the wild days of the “Roaring Twenties.” This barrierfree museum is one of the few remaining sheriff’s residences and jail buildings in the United States.
The Historic West Bend Walking Tour will take you through the city’s historic Downtown area and will introduce you to architectural gems like the West Bend Theater, the Frisby House, and the Washington House.

Museum Overview
The Museum of Wisconsin Art (MOWA) exhibits the largest comprehensive collection of historic Wisconsin art from the 1840s to the early 21st century and the largest display of works by Milwaukee-born, Munich-trained painter Carl Von Marr. Annually, 14-16 temporary exhibitions feature many contemporary Wisconsin artists in group and solo exhibitions.
The museum’s 32,000-square-foot facility sits on the banks of the Milwaukee River in downtown West Bend. This gives visitors an even greater opportunity to see and appreciate Wisconsin’s outstanding artistic heritage and current art being produced in the state.
West Bend Sculpture Walk
The West Bend Sculpture Walk, curated by the West Bend Friends of Sculpture, consists of nearly 40 outdoor exhibits of modern sculpture by artists from around the world. Set primarily along West Bend’s Riverwalk, the sculptures interact with the natural background to create a truly unique experience. One of the most recent sculptures installed was the Avis Gloriae Et Lavidis MMXVI (Bird of Glory and Praise). RECREATION
West Bend is a community of parks. The city’s park system has over 1,200 acres of parks and green space, as well as being home to a number of recreational trails.
Regner Park is one of West Bend’s most beautiful parks, featuring outdoor sculptures and the Labyrinth Sculpture Garden. The park contains everything for family and individual recreation, including picnic areas, ball fields, tennis and basketball courts, bicycling and hiking trails, horseshoe pits, playgrounds, a swimming beach, a splashpad and bathhouse, a fishing pond, and several sheltered pavilions. During the winter, the swimming pond becomes an ice-skating rink.
Approximately 5 miles of the 1,000-mile National Ice Age Trail crosses through the city’s Ridge Run Park and Glacial Blue Hills Recreation Area. The Eisenbahn State Trail offers 25 miles of scenic hiking and bicycling, with 5.5 miles of this trail paved within the city.
Local nature preserves provide abundant birdwatching and wildlife-viewing opportunities. In fact, West Bend is a “Bird City Wisconsin” community. The 137-acre Lac Lawrann Conservancy has 5 miles of hiking trails and
offers many environmental education programs in their Learning Facility which is also available for event rental. The Riveredge Nature Center in nearby Newburg consists of 350 acres of natural sanctuary prairies, forests, ponds, and marshes along the Milwaukee River.
The rolling hills of the Kettle Moraine State Forest provide thousands of acres of wild land for hiking, mountain biking, cross-country skiing, fishing, and camping. Extensive trail systems highlight the Kettle Moraine’s unique topography and geology.

Navigating Senior Living and Health care
There are many different types of senior living and senior healthcare options and providers available for older adults and their loved ones. One of the most confusing aspects of senior living is dozens of abbreviations used to describe different options. Here are some helpful definitions of the types and levels of care available in senior living:
Continuing Care Retirement Community
This type of community provides an active and independent lifestyle with progressing levels of care available should a person’s needs change. They are sometimes referred to as a life plan community where independent living, assisted living, and skilled nursing care can all be found within one retirement community.
Independent Living
Adults generally 55 and better are able to live independently and enjoy worry free retirement—free from home repairs and maintenance. Amenities and activities are available, but most do not offer medical care or nursing staff. As with traditional housing, however, residents may hire in-home help separately as needed.
Assisted Living
There are three types of assisted living classifications in Wisconsin:
Community-based residential facilities (CBRF), adult family homes (AFH), and residential care apartment complexes (RCAC). Assisted living facilities are designed to provide independence with assistance and residentfocused programs as needed. They typically aid with activities of daily living, coordination of services, monitoring resident health, medication management, and personal care services.
An AFH is for those 18 years of age and older who receive services that may include up to seven hours per week of nursing care per resident. AFHs admit and provide services to the elderly, persons with dementia, developmental disabilities, mental health issues, physical disabilities, traumatic brain injury, alcohol and other drug abuse, correctional clients, pregnant women needing counseling, and the terminally ill.
An RCAC offers private apartments including a kitchenette, full bath, sleeping and living area, and up to 28 hours per week of personal, supportive, and nursing services. For those who need more than 28 hours of care per week, a CBRF assisted living provides personal care, housing, meals, and other services, and can also provide a maximum of 3 hours of licensed nursing care. Some
CBRFs also provide a specialized setting and programs for those with Alzheimer’s and related memory loss.
Nursing Home
Nursing homes in Wisconsin are licensed to accept long-term care residents with complex health care needs that require around-theclock nursing supervision, including individuals with advanced dementia. Skilled nursing facilities (SNF) also provide short-term rehabilitation care for individuals who may be leaving the hospital after a surgery or a health event and require physical, occupational, and nursing care before they head home.
Whether considering a Life Plan Community, an independent living apartment or home, or if your loved one might need assisted living or long-term care, there are many high-quality senior living and healthcare options available for older adults in the greater West Bend area.
