History and Historical Walking Tour
ippecanoe City was founded in 1840 along the developing Miami and Erie Canal by John Clark. Envisioning a bustling city that would reap the profits of the strategic placement on the canal, Clark promptly mapped out the land. Clark’s former home still stands on East Main Street at the southeast corner of First Street and now houses the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
When selling the remaining lots, Clark requested that no log structures be built, so the original structures were constructed of frame and brick, many of them remaining today. The Old Tippecanoe City Restoration &
Architectural District was established in 1974. Now, the city’s Restoration Board regulates exterior modifications in the district to maintain the integrity and charm of the town’s rich architectural legacy. Tipp City’s picturesque downtown historic district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The name of Tipp City was derived from William Henry Harrison’s Presidential campaign slogan, “Tippecanoe and Tyler too” by John Clark, who wanted to honor Harrison.
The early city was a popular canal town and provided a nice stopping point for traveling boatmen, boasting several bars and a hotel. Through the early 1850s, the canal traffic was at its peak and the town was growing at a rapid pace, but the canal era came to a crashing halt with the spread of railroads across the country. The canal locks have been dry for years but can still be seen just east of the downtown historic district. The first steamdriven locomotive passed through Tippecanoe City in 1853. And still today, freight trains continue to pass through
As the canals went out of business, the city’s rapid growth slowed tremendously, but the 20th-century development of County Road 25-A and subsequently Interstate 75 brought back the missing commerce and vitality. The modern growth of the town happened while also gaining a new, shortened name, Tipp City. In the 1930s, the USPS abbreviated the name of the town to avoid confusion with a town 200 miles away, Tippecanoe, Ohio.
Tipp City is an idyllic small town that has one foot deeply rooted in its proud and vibrant history but also has one foot forging ahead to innovation and to the future. Images and ideals of both the past and present are married in harmony, and it truly has all the necessary amenities to create and maintain a positive quality of life.

enerations of remarkable people have found that this quaint area is an outstanding, safe place to start and grow a business, raise a family, and get to know their neighbors. The idyllic location of Tipp City is attractive to people for several reasons. The city itself is just 7.89 square miles, and it lies just west of the Miami River. Tipp City boasts a thriving historic downtown district, active with shops and restaurants, and a bustling business district adjacent to I-75 and west of the downtown area.
Tipp City lies just minutes north of Dayton, Ohio, and is just a few miles from one of the busiest interchanges in
the country–the I-70/I-75 intersection, allowing easy access to several major cities. These highways are more than just a means to travel, they are magnets attracting both business and culture to the area. In addition to highway access, the nearby Dayton International Airport provides effortless air travel for both business and leisure travelers.
According to people who live in Tipp City, the advantages of its great location are countless; we have the pros of accessibility without the cons of “big city” problems.

Events and Festivals
ommunity camaraderie is on full display at the many festivals and events held around the city. The signature annual event is the Tipp City Mum Festival. This event, coordinated by a dedicated team of volunteers, is held at the end of September each year and attracts thousands of visitors to the town! Friday night kicks off the fun with a car show in historic downtown Tipp City. It is truly a sight to behold: vintage cars line the streets, and thousands of people come to enjoy the sights and sounds of the evening. The next morning, the Run for the Mums 5K is held, sponsored by Tipp Monroe Community Services, as well as an old-fashioned parade through town, culminating at the City Park. The Park bustles with activity all day Saturday and Sunday, featuring a kids’ area, live entertainment, arts and crafts galore, and an enormous array of food choices.
Another feature festival in Tipp City is Tippapalooza. Started in 2012, Tippapalooza is a premier annual allday music festival celebrating Miami Valley musicians and benefiting the Tipp community through charitable contributions. It is held on Saturday of Labor Day weekend each year downtown.
Canal Music Fest, held by the Tipp City Arts Council, is a free, family-friendly concert featuring a different tribute band each year. It is held the second Saturday of June each summer and has grown each year to approximately 4,000 attendees. The event features a variety of food and drink vendors and a wonderful, laid-back atmosphere to enjoy fabulous music with friends!
Other notable events are: Tippecanoe and Christmas Too Historic Holiday Home Tour, held the first Saturday in December, Community Nights, occurring the first Friday of the month in the summer months featuring live
music in front of the Hotel Gallery downtown, Vintage in the Village market organized by the Downtown Tipp City Partnership each June, and Community Dinners held each Wednesday evening from autumn to spring at the Tipp City United Methodist Church.

ipp City (as well as surrounding Monroe and Bethel Townships) is pleasantly situated in southern Miami County, Ohio. Miami County is thriving–full of industry, large and small businesses, agriculture, and educational resources.
The city of Tipp City is governed by the Council/Manager government system. Council Members are selected on a nonpartisan, at-large ballot. The position of mayor is selected by the elected City Council members and becomes the ceremonial head of the government. The City Council also chooses the Council President and oversees the hiring of the City Manager. Daily operations of Tipp City fall under the responsibility of the City Manager. Government functions are carried out by the City Manager

One of the fastest-growing districts in the state, Bethel Local Schools include portions of Tipp City, Huber Heights,

have a relationship with the Miami Valley Career Technology Center (MVCTC). MVCTC is dedicated to providing premier educational choices and advanced employment preparation for youth, and adults of the Miami Valley. Students receive challenging, career-focused education, as well as a rigorous academic foundation. This combination has resulted in innovative applications and knowledge, enabling MVCTC students to enter post-secondary education or the global workforce with a high level of competency.
Beyond public schools in Tipp City, many additional resources for education are available in the area. Within a 25-mile radius, there are several institutes of higher learning for our citizens – Edison Community College, Sinclair Community College, Wright State University, and the University of Dayton are just a short commute away. Other park facilities include tennis courts, pickleball courts, basketball courts, athletic fields, picnic shelters, playground equipment, nature trails, a driving range, batting cages, community canoe livery, and a boat ramp on the Great Miami River. The City Park is also home to a historic structure called the "Roundhouse," a favorite spot for family picnics and reunions. TippMonroe Community Services hosts a summer playground at the Roundhouse for eight weeks, while organizations such as the Mum Festival Committee utilize the facility for their annual events.

ipp City takes pride in the rich history of parks and recreational opportunities for residents, visitors, and business partners. Tipp City has over 837 acres of neighborhood, regional, prairie reserves for recreation and wellhead protection, and community parks throughout the city. The Tipp City Parks employ a staff of four full-time employees and several seasonal and part-time staff members.
They are responsible for the maintenance of the City Park, Kyle Park, as well as eight neighborhood parks, the Nature Center, and the Aquatic Center.

Cyclists and runners enjoy the miles of paved trails connecting the area with other trails statewide. River lovers will find smooth waters perfect for a casual canoe trip or a day of fishing. A short hike at Charleston Falls Nature Preserve brings you to the uppermost point of a magnificent 37’ waterfall. A few steps down takes hikers to the bottom of the ravine, where they can look up at the full length of the falls and its limestone foundation.
Tipp City is just a short car ride away from even more recreation and culture! Within 10 miles of Tipp City, there are several golf courses, both indoor and outdoor ice-skating rinks, college and professional sporting events, a wide variety of festivals, and cultural events, such as theatre performances, concerts, and ballet.
