Elizabeth Fire Department: Honoring a rich legacy while leading with innovation to protect Elizabeth’s community
he Elizabeth Fire Department (EFD) has been a cornerstone of public safety in Elizabeth, New Jersey, since its inception as a volunteer organization in 1837. Over nearly two centuries, the department has evolved into a professional and progressive force, dedicated to protecting the lives and property of its residents.
A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE
Fire protection in Elizabeth dates back to July 4, 1789, with the establishment of the Protection Steam Fire Engine Company Number 1. Initially a "Bucket Brigade," residents maintained buckets and ladders for emergencies. By 1837, the EFD was formally established with Engine Company Number 1 and Lafayette Hook and Ladder Company Number 1. Transitioning to a paid professional force in
CURRENT STRUCTURE AND LEADERSHIP
Today, the EFD operates as a career agency with approximately 276 firefighters across seven firehouses in Elizabeth’s 13 square miles. It fields seven engine companies, three ladder companies, one rescue company, and specialized units. The department also provides Basic Life Support (BLS) emergency medical services, responding to over 22,000 calls annually.
At the helm is Director Patrick Byrnes, a dedicated leader emphasizing professionalism, community outreach, and modernization. Under his leadership, the EFD has strengthened collaboration with regional agencies, including its role in the Metro Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) Strike Team.

In a historic milestone, the Elizabeth Fire Department welcomed its first female firefighter, Sheena Spence, on January 8, 2018. At the time of her hire, the department had been serving the community for an impressive 181 years since its establishment in 1837. This groundbreaking moment reflected Byrnes’ steadfast commitment to building a workforce that truly represents the diversity of the community it serves, marking a turning point in the department's history and setting a powerful example for future generations. Byrnes endorsed Fire Chief Salvatore J. Barraco, emphasizing leadership that inspires. "Chief Barraco’s appointment exemplifies the

From elevating hotel occupancy to driving foot traffic to the local downtown neighborhoods and The Mills at Jersey Gardens, EDMO has created a ripple effect that touches every corner of Elizabeth’s economy.
MILESTONES OF IMPACT
The past decade has been marked by incredible achievements. EDMO played a pivotal role in Union County tying for second place with Hudson County in New Jersey's state tourism rankings, brought global attention to the city through its rebranding as

the birthplace of the U.S. Submarine Force, and pioneered marketing efforts for events like the annual "Tour de Elizabeth", a celebrated 15-mile cycling event that draws hundreds.
EDMO’s commitment to innovation shines through its digital outreach. A BOND ACROSS OCEANS
ELIZABETH, NJ, AND KITAMI, JAPAN
As Elizabeth, New Jersey, approaches a milestone in 2025, it’s time to reflect on an extraordinary partnership that has bridged cultures, enriched communities, and forged lasting ties. 2024 marked the 55th anniversary of the sister city relationship between Elizabeth and Kitami, Japan, a connection built on shared values and mutual admiration.
A JOURNEY ROOTED IN UNITY
The seeds of this enduring friendship were planted in 1970, fostering an exchange of ideas, culture, and goodwill. Over the decades, this partnership has blossomed, benefiting both cities through shared economic and cultural initiatives. What began as an agreement honoring the memory of George and Ida Pierson, missionaries from Elizabeth, has evolved into a heartfelt bond. In 1888, George Pierson was ordained at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Elizabeth before embarking on his mission to Japan with Ida. Their journey began a legacy that continues to inspire.
A YEAR OF SPECIAL VISITS
2024 was a remarkable year for this relationship. In July, a delegation from the City of Elizabeth, including representatives from the Greater Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce and the Elizabeth Tourism Office, traveled to Kitami. They participated in cultural events, meetings to strengthen ties, and explored opportunities for collaboration. A highlight was their visit to the Pierson Memorial House, restored in 1970 and opened as a museum to honor the Piersons and the ElizabethKitami connection.
In November, Kitami reciprocated with a visit to
Elizabeth. The delegation’s trip included multi-generational cultural presentations, shared meals, and discussions on future initiatives. Both visits underscored the enduring strength of this bond and its importance to both communities.
CELEBRATING SHARED VISION: INITIATIVES LED BY MAYOR BOLLWAGE AND FACILITATED BY DIRECTOR KRISHNA GARLIC
The Elizabeth-Kitami relationship owes much of its success to the visionary leadership of Mayor J. Christian Bollwage who tasked Director Krishna Garlic to faciliate this partnership. Together, they have championed initiatives that celebrate cultural exchange, education, and community engagement, ensuring the partnership continues to flourish. Their efforts are reflected in programs that foster
reflection and a reminder of the shared values uniting the two communities.
EDUCATIONAL AND ARTISTIC EXCHANGE
collaboration across schools, hospitals, chambers of commerce, and tourism offices, highlighting a shared desire to grow together.
ELIZABETH AT THE BONCHE FESTIVAL & PARADE
One of the highlights of this partnership is Elizabeth’s participation in Kitami’s Bonche Festival & Parade. Delegates from Elizabeth joined the festivities, dressed in traditional attire and immersing themselves in Kitami’s cherished traditions. This vibrant celebration reaffirmed the bond between the two cities.
THE FRIENDSHIP GARDEN
Groundwork Elizabeth, an environmental organization, honored Kitami’s agricultural legacy by creating a “Friendship Garden.” The garden features mint, celebrating Kitami’s farming heritage, and raspberries, a nod to Ida Pierson’s fondness for the fruit.
This living monument blends Elizabeth’s natural beauty with Kitami’s agricultural pride. It serves as a destination for
Elizabeth’s students played a key role in strengthening this partnership through education and creativity. Schools prepared learning materials and art displays about Japan and Kitami, transforming hallways into vibrant showcases of Japanese culture. Students painted murals, created informational exhibits, and learned basic Japanese phrases to welcome visitors. These efforts fostered global citizenship and cultural understanding.
LOOKING AHEAD
As we celebrate 55 years of friendship, the ElizabethKitami partnership is a shining example of what can be achieved through mutual respect and collaboration. The future holds endless possibilities for deepening this bond, from expanded trade opportunities to joint cultural ventures. This milestone anniversary is a proud reminder of Elizabeth’s role on the world stage. Through cultural exchanges—from the taste of Kitami’s celebrated seafood to Elizabeth’s iconic dining establishments—this relationship creates shared experiences that bring the two cities closer.
A GLOBAL OUTLOOK FOR ELIZABETH
The Greater Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce and the Elizabeth Destination Marketing Organization are positioning Elizabeth as a global city. By nurturing relationships like the one with Kitami, the Chamber reinforces its mission to promote economic growth, community engagement, and cultural diplomacy. This milestone is a celebration of unity, reflection, and recommitment to the ideals sustaining this beautiful friendship. Together, Elizabeth and Kitami continue to show the world the power of unity and shared purpose through their enduring international partnership.

In the world of contemporary art, few names evoke the cultural depth and vibrant storytelling of Kervin Andre. Born in Portau-Prince, Haiti, and now thriving in Elizabeth, New Jersey, Andre’s artistic vision bridges two worlds, capturing the resilience, beauty, and spirit of his heritage.

Thrugh my art, I want t shw the world the strength and beauty my culture…
~ KERVIN ANDRE
ndre’s journey as an artist began with simple sketches in his youth.
His early experiences in Haiti, a nation celebrated as the first Black republic, profoundly shaped his worldview. Even as a child, he saw Haiti not through the lens of stereotypes, but as a land of immense beauty and strength. This perspective became the foundation of his art.
After relocating to the U.S., Andre faced the challenge of reconciling his Haitian roots with his new American identity. His selftaught artistry became a powerful tool to navigate this duality. Through his company, AkomicsArt LLC, Andre’s work challenges misconceptions about Haiti and uplifts narratives of African-American and Haitian
communities. His pieces are filled with bold imagery and vivid colors, often portraying individuals as symbols of hope and resilience.
Elizabeth, New Jersey, has played a pivotal role in Andre’s growth as an artist. The city’s diversity and vibrant cultural scene have provided both inspiration and opportunity.
His art has been featured in local venues like First Republic and the Elizabeth Renaissance
Foundation Exhibition Gallery along with other nearby locations like Above Art Studio in New Brunswick, and Rebel Lounge in New York City. These spaces have allowed Andre to connect with a broad audience, sharing stories that resonate across cultural and generational lines.
Andre’s works extend beyond the canvas. He has illustrated books such as Sheroes of the Haitian Revolution and Heroes of the Haitian Revolution, celebrating historical figures who have often been overlooked. His commitment to amplifying these voices is a testament to his belief in art as a platform for education and empowerment.
Critics and admirers alike laud Andre’s art for its emotive power and cultural significance. Each piece invites viewers to explore themes of identity, heritage, and justice, serving as both a reflection of the past and a beacon for the future. “Through my art, I want to show the world the strength and beauty of my culture,” Andre says. “My hope is that others see themselves in the stories I tell.”
As Kervin Andre continues to inspire through his art, Elizabeth remains at the heart of his story. For residents and art enthusiasts alike, his work is a reminder of the power of creativity to connect us to our roots and to one another.

LIFTING COMMERCE TO NEW HEIGHTS
A Waterfront Powerhouse: The Arrival of Four Mega Cranes at APM
n November 2024, APM Terminals Elizabeth welcomed four state-of-theart Neo-Panamax Ship-toShore (STS) cranes, reinforcing its pivotal role in the U.S. East Coast supply chain. These towering mechanical marvels represent significant investments in commerce, jobs, and growth for the Port of New York and New Jersey.
DESIGNED FOR MODERN GLOBAL TRADE
The cranes, capable of handling ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) carrying up to 18,000
TEUs, ensure the terminal can meet the increasing demands of global trade. With a 23-container outreach, they improve efficiency, reducing vessel turnaround times and solidifying the port’s reputation as a leader in logistics. APM Terminals Elizabeth now operates 14 cranes along its 6,000-foot quay, with the capacity to service three giant container vessels simultaneously.
“The new cranes improve our productivity by enabling us to work multiple large ships simultaneously,” said Henrik
THE NEW CRANES IMPROVE OUR PRODUCTIVITY BY ENABLING US TO WORK MULTIPLE LARGE SHIPS SIMULTANEOUSLY
Kristensen, Managing Director of APM Terminals Elizabeth. “This reduces port stay time and improves the speed of our customer supply chains.”
ECONOMIC RIPPLE EFFECTS
Part of a $70 million modernization effort, these cranes generate economic activity across industries like trucking, warehousing, and manufacturing. Each container lifted drives commerce, creating jobs and connecting businesses to global markets.

ELIZABETH, NEW JERSEY, IS HOME TO CHERISHED ITALIAN RESTAURANTS THAT HAVE LONG BEEN PILLARS OF THE COMMUNITY. AMONG THESE CULINARY TREASURES ARE JOHN’S CAFFÉ, TOMMY’S PIZZERIA & RESTAURANT, AND TORNA A SORRENTO, EACH OFFERING AUTHENTIC CUISINE AND A RICH FAMILY LEGACY. TOGETHER, THEY SHOWCASE THE CITY’S ITALIAN HERITAGE WHILE CREATING CHERISHED MEMORIES FOR GENERATIONS OF PATRONS.
TORNA A SORRENTO: A FOND FAREWELL
Torna a Sorrento, founded by Pietro and Anna Savarese in 1987, brought the vibrant flavors of Southern Italy to 52 Westfield Avenue. They came to Elizabeth as immigrants in 1981, and for nearly four decades they created more than just a restaurant— it was a beloved gathering place for families, friends, and neighbors. The Savarese family’s commitment to authentic cuisine and warm hospitality ensured that every visit was memorable. The couple’s sons, John and Tony Savarese, took over the family business in the years following their parents’ retirement, ensuring that the restaurant remained a family affair.
The restaurant hosted countless community events, including the first Breast Cancer Awareness Fundraiser, spearheaded by Councilwoman At-Large Patricia Perkins-Auguste. She reflected on her memories, saying, “I held the first breast cancer awareness fundraiser here, and since then I've had many fundraiser events here. So many fond memories
and pictures. Sorrento’s is an Elizabeth tradition that will be greatly missed.”
Torna a Sorrento’s role as a community hub went beyond its exceptional cuisine. It became a venue where bonds were strengthened, milestones were celebrated, and local causes were championed. Though it closed its doors in December 2024, the restaurant’s impact endures.
Mayor J. Christian Bollwage summed up the sentiment, noting, “It’s been more than a
restaurant—it’s been a gathering place for friends and families across Elizabeth.” The legacy of Torna a Sorrento remains an indelible part of the city’s history.
TOMMY’S PIZZERIA & RESTAURANT: A LEGACY OF TRADITION
Founded in 1981 by Joe and Tony Paternostro, twins who emigrated from Avellino, Italy, Tommy’s Pizzeria & Restaurant has been a cornerstone of Elizabeth’s dining scene for over 40 years. Located at 1063 Fairmount Avenue, this family-run eatery offers a warm, BYOB atmosphere and authentic Italian cuisine crafted from cherished recipes.
Tommy’s has also gained recognition through appearances on Mob Wives and its sponsorship of the Peterstown Cup Soccer
Tournament. A hub for families and the community, Tommy’s embodies hard work, tradition, and the welcoming spirit that makes Elizabeth special.
JOHN’S CAFFE: TRADITION AND INNOVATION
Located in the Italian neighborhood of Peterstown, John’s Caffé has been a community favorite since its establishment in 1968 by Giovanni Cerullo. Known for its authentic Italian specialties and its participation in the iconic St. Rocco’s Italian street fair, the café quickly became a beloved local establishment.
After Giovanni’s passing in 2009, his son Gerry (a captain & 20 year proud veteran of the Elizabeth Fire Department) and

grandson Giovanni renovated the café and introduced a modernized menu. Their offerings now include paninis, focaccia sandwiches, thin-crust pizza, and hearty Italian dinners. Despite these updates, the Cerullo family has preserved the café’s original charm, ensuring it remains a vital part of Elizabeth’s culinary scene.
PRESERVING THE SPIRIT OF FAMILY AND TRADITION
These three establishments— John’s Caffé, Tommy’s Pizzeria & Restaurant, and Torna a Sorrento—represent more than culinary destinations. They are testaments to the enduring power of family, tradition, and community. n a historic Wednesday, September 11, the city of Elizabeth solidified its place in naval history with a celebration at Veterans Memorial Park, as the U.S. Navy officially recognized the city as the birthplace of the U.S. Submarine Force. Highlighting the event was the unveiling of a modern 3D art replica of the USS Holland (SS-1), the U.S. Navy’s first modern commissioned submarine, honoring Elizabeth’s maritime legacy and the ingenuity of its innovators.
Governor Phil Murphy, reflecting on the significance of the event, remarked, “Elizabeth has always been a cradle of innovation and resilience. Honoring its legacy as the birthplace of submarine technology underscores New Jersey’s rich history of progress and achievement.”
The USS Holland, designed by Irish immigrant John Phillip Holland and launched on May 17, 1897, was a revolutionary vessel that paved the way for modern naval engineering. Holland’s work in Elizabeth’s Crescent Shipyard laid the foundation for submarine technology, and his legacy continues to inspire generations.
Mayor J. Christian Bollwage expressed pride in the city’s contributions to naval history, saying, “This celebration is a testament to Elizabeth’s role in shaping the future of naval warfare. The USS Holland sculpture serves as a powerful symbol of our city’s enduring legacy and the visionary minds who built it.”
A COMMUNITY EFFORT IN LEGACY-BUILDING
The 14-foot-wide, 9-foot-tall sculpture, weighing over 350 pounds, was created by Union County-based welding artist Adalberto de la Cruz of Herralbert LLC, with contributions from local students Jaeden Leon and Miklos Martins of Elizabeth’s Autobody Program. The students, guided by instructor Joe Amabile, represented the city’s commitment to hands-on learning and community involvement.
Jennifer Costa, President of the Greater Elizabeth Chamber of Commerce (GECC), praised the collaborative spirit that brought the project to life. “This initiative reflects Elizabeth’s dedication to uniting schools, businesses, and residents in preserving our shared history while building a brighter future,” said Costa.
Imperial Weld Ring Corp., a third-generation family business and long-standing GECC member, donated metal for the sculpture. Known for its contributions to the U.S. Navy,
the company symbolizes the strong connection between Elizabeth’s industrial sector and its maritime heritage.
A CELEBRATION OF PATRIOTISM AND INNOVATION
The event featured vibrant performances from local schools and organizations, including the Elizabeth High School Marching Band and Choir, the Marine Corps JROTC, and intricately crafted artistic cutouts created by Elizabeth Public School carpenters. These efforts highlighted the city’s deep-rooted pride in its history and community. Superintendent Olga Hugelmeyer noted the educational value of the event, stating, “This ceremony connects our students to the city’s historical significance, inspiring future innovation and growth.”
USS NEW JERSEY COMMISSIONING: A FULL-CIRCLE MOMENT
As Elizabeth celebrated its role in submarine history, the U.S. Navy commissioned its newest attack submarine, the USS New Jersey, further cementing the state’s maritime prominence. Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Governor Murphy said, “This submarine
represents New Jersey’s legacy of excellence and innovation, embodying the valor and dedication of every sailor who serves aboard her.”
The USS New Jersey, the Navy’s first fully gender-integrated submarine, showcases modern design improvements tailored for a diverse crew. Commander Steven A. Halle, captain of the USS New Jersey, remarked, “It is incredible to witness Elizabeth’s recognition as the cradle of submarine innovation in the same year we welcome this groundbreaking vessel to the fleet.”
ELIZABETH’S LEGACY LIVES ON
Elizabeth’s acknowledgment as the birthplace of the U.S. Submarine Force serves as a powerful reminder of the city’s impact on naval engineering and innovation. With the unveiling of the USS Holland sculpture, the city celebrates its past while looking ahead to a future driven by creativity, collaboration, and progress.
As Mayor Bollwage aptly stated, “Elizabeth’s story is one of innovation and perseverance. From John Holland’s groundbreaking designs to the commissioning of the USS New Jersey, our city’s legacy is forever intertwined with the evolution of naval technology and important maritime history."
