A multi-faceted gem of a park in northern Wood County, Powers Bluff is many things to diverse groups of people.
It carries historic and cultural significance for the Prairie Band Potawatomi and the Ho-Chunk Nations; ecological and botanical significance for the wildflower enthusiasts and biologists who have studied its unique flora, especially the spring wildflower display; and recreational significance for the generations of families who have come to play on its slopes for winter skiing and tubing. Powers Bluff County Park is now taking on a new significance as a center for mountain biking and multi-use trails.
In 2023, county crews began constructing an entrance road and parking lot, which will serve as the trailhead.
“It’s really two parks within one,” explains Gene Bymers, President of the non-profit organization, Friends of Powers Bluff. “The top of the hill has protection for historic preservation and a state natural area, and the new part of the park is being developed for biking and multi-use trails.”
In 2005, the varied groups of stakeholders came together and helped provide input and approval for a Long-Range Master plan. Lack of funding and additional land put that plan on hiatus for several years.
In 2012 Wood County Parks and Forestry Department acquired 223 acres adjacent and to the north of the original 160 acre park to expand the recreational opportunities and to take some of the parking pressure off the top of the hill. The acquisition was handled through a land swap of county forestry land.
Through funding from a variety of sources, including Stewardship grants, ARPA (COVID) funds, and increased revenues from parks and forestry operations during the pandemic, trail building began in 2022.
Rock Solid Trails Contracting, LLC have constructed 5 ½ miles of single-track bicycle trail over the past 2 years. These trails were designed to serve a variety of skill levels from beginner to advanced.
A 3-mile multi-use gravel trail was also constructed, which winds through fields and forests throughout the new property. Wood County hopes to finalize funding for a new trailhead shelter building in 2024. This shelter building will be available year round to trail users, and will have an enclosed area available for event rentals throughout the year.
The Friends of Powers Bluff was formed in 2005. “We’ve been inactive for a number of years,” explains Gene. “It made sense to fold the bicycle trails group into our group and work together. We are reorganizing and looking for new members now. We want to promote committees and recruit volunteers to help with trail signage, trail improvements, and trail maintenance.”
As Gene notes, “The nature trails in the original park will be improved and signed. The nature trails are not part of the biking trails and are off-limits to bicycle traffic. The old and new entrances will both be open, but to totally different park experiences.”
Additionally, Rob Harper, Professor of History Coordinator, Native American and Indigenous Studies at UW Stevens Point, has volunteered his time and efforts to work with Wood County and the Prairie Band Potawatomi and Ho-Chunk Historic Preservation Offices on content and design of new historical signage at the top of the hill. “We want to preserve the past and tell the story of the history up here,” says Chad Schooley, Parks and Forestry Director.
To learn more about the project, contact the Wood County Parks and Forestry Department office at 715-421-8422, or email parks@woodcountywi.gov. For information on the Friends of Powers Bluff, contact Gene Bymers, 715-305-2391.

Rudolph, WI was the second town to be established in Wood County. It was named after Rudolph Hecox. A large sawmill, stave mill, railroad and plenty of farmland drew many men into the area. The Village of Rudolph was incorporated in 1960. Rudolph has seen a great deal of progress since its early beginnings.
The Village is home to the Rudolph Grotto Shrine located at St. Philips Church. While they are a small community, they have several big businesses located in the quaint village. They are home to Pete’s Market, Wisconsin Dairy State Cheese, and Bank-A-Count Corporation to name a few. Perhaps one of the most notable accomplishments is the Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer stamp that is stamped on outgoing mail at the post office each Christmas. Mail arrives from around the world for this sought-after stamp! It was commissioned by the Rudolph Postmistress back in 1940 and has been used ever since.
The town bustles with energy and enthusiasm. They have a wonderful Village Park with lighted tennis courts, softball fields, a playground, and a picnic area. Recently, a memorial to a hometown, Nascar legend, Dick Trickle, was constructed at the park. The pride however lies in those that have served our great Country that called Rudolph home. Research tells us the military service dates to the 114 men from Rudolph that served in the Civil War! Rudolph (Village and Town) has had over 520 men and women serve in our Armed Forces and for that, we are eternally grateful.
More information about Rudolph can be found on our Facebook page: facebook.com/Village-of-Rudolph-WI or our website: villageofrudolphwi.org

Home to one of North America’s finest coated paper manufacturing facilities, as well as hundreds of acres of thriving cranberry marshes, Biron’s diverse landscape, provides the perfect place to live, work, and play in the Heart of Wisconsin area.
The development in the Bridgewater area was a collaborative effort of Classic Development Corp, Biron Licensee Group, Consolidated Water Power Company, the Village of Biron and Wood County. Another unique feature of the project is the numerous public recreational facilities that are being built as part of the development. These include a multi-purpose recreational trail with shore fishing bump-outs along the Wisconsin River; a new boat landing with a parking lot for 80 vehicles with boat trailers and 20 vehicles; two new restroom facilities, one at the boat landing and one with a shelter in the Consolidated Water Power Company green space; multiple other parking areas to provide convenient access to the recreational facilities; a village park along the river with an accessible fishing and viewing pier; and boat slips available through the Village of Biron for seasonal rental.

They are proud to offer our residents an excellent quality of life, including 24-hour law enforcement, road maintenance, and a volunteer fire department with a modern and up-to-date station. Pittsville, WI is unique in that it is the “Exact Geographical Center of Wisconsin.” You may come out and take a selfie by the geographical marker depicting it as such. Founded as “Pitts Mill” by the Pitts family in 1857, it evolved in name to Pittsville and was incorporated in 1887.
Before the turn of the century, it was a lumber-rich area and later became an agrarian settlement surrounded by farms established
by European immigrants. A Community event/celebration in the past was the annual Pow Wow, first held in 1923 with over 500 Native Americans participating. It was held in Riverside Park on the Yellow River which is where the annual Fourth of July event is currently held.
Surrounded by dairy farms and cranberry beds, the friendly community is proud to be “the exact geographic center of the state.” Outdoor recreation abounds in the Pittsville area. Riverside Park boasts disc golf, a kayak launch, playground, tennis and basketball courts, and baseball fields – all located at the edge of the Wood County ATV Trail.
Stretch your legs on peaceful walking and exercise trails. Nearby county parks offer camping, fishing, swimming, hiking, and nearby County Forest hunting land. Stop in at downtown stores for your camping, fishing, and hunting provisions, as well as exclusive Center of the State souvenirs.

Nekoosa, with a population of approximately 2,600, is situated on the beautiful Wisconsin River. Nekoosa is located on State Highways 73 and 173 as well as on County Trunk Highway AA. A recently expanded bridge has been built across the Wisconsin River to the Town of Saratoga replacing the old steel structure that had been serving the two communities from 1916 to 1963. Prior to that time, two ferries served traffic across the river. The one near the present business center was called the “Upper Ferry” and the cable ferry located about a half-mile below the mill was called the “Lower Ferry.”
The business establishments of Nekoosa maintain friendly personnel and offer services and merchandise at competitive prices. The city’s main street along with its decorative brick, flower planters, and wide sidewalks with benches makes the business district a pleasant place to shop. Riverside Park is an attractive and spacious picnic site located on the Wisconsin River on the north side of the city. It is well equipped to accommodate large and small picnic groups. A beautiful setting enhances the tennis and basketball courts, splash pad, and baseball diamonds available for residents of the area during the summer months.
