The Oxford Dictionary states confidence is the feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or something. This is our 2nd year of genomic enhanced EPD’s and let me say, my confidence has never been higher. Last year the data showed up (by a lack of planning on my part) a week after our sale concluded. As I delivered those animals, I was confident more than ever that our product can indeed compete with larger offerings. These bulls, as always, are raised on high fiber rations and bred up, not fattened up. The thing I would like to point out to you is 85% of our culling decisions are made on fall shot day with our eyes and the scale head. My dad, my wife, Jeff Gerlach, the fine folks at Sweetgrass Vet, and myself all get a vote in who gets to keep the family jewels. Taking a gander at the genomic data, you’ll see 24 of the 27 bulls tested are in the top 50% of the breed and higher for weaning weight. There are 1.1 million cattle in the registry they are compared to! So bid with confidence, knowing that the bull you bring home will advance your herd’s genetics.
As always, we would like to take this moment and thank past, present, and future buyers for putting your trust in our cattle. It is our neighborhood support from across our fences that have kept us improving our herd to help them improve theirs. This year we thank Platte Livestock and CattleUSA for the ease of sale day and exposure to a wider audience. Please join us before the sale for lunch in the sale barn café to shoot the bull!

Statement from Sweetgrass Veterinary Services:
Sweetgrass Veterinary Services is excited and proud to welcome everyone to the 2023 Assmus Angus bull production sale! Every year we look forward to partnering with this passionate cattle family on their animal health protocols and assisting in the preparation for this annual event. We encourage everyone to come take a look at the bulls and you will find this is one of the best offerings yet and they keep getting better and better every year. All sale bulls offered have passed a thorough breeding soundness exam which included evaluation of semen motility and morphology, scrotal measurements, and visual examination of eyes, hoof and leg conformation. To reduce stress and times through the chute, yearling bulls were also carcass ultrasounded by CUP Lab certified tech, Jeff Schoenfelder, at the time of the breeding exam. The bulls have received a complete vaccination protocol from birth to sale day and have received their first pre-breeding vaccination as well as a footrot, pinkeye and anthrax vaccinations. The bulls have been poured for the control of internal and external parasites and blood tested negative for BVD. In good practice, we do encourage a 3 week quarantine period before contact with your herd to allow them to get over the high risk time after the stress of transportation and to work with your local veterinarian to prepare your bull for breeding by repeating a fertility test prior to pasture turn out. We can be reached by phone at (605) 928-8387 or email at vet@sweetgrassvets.com.
Kind Regards,
Erik olum DVM

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire's calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.
Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire's genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf's weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.
Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.
Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) , an index, expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning with the underlying breeding objective assuming that individuals retain their own replacement females within herd and sell the rest of the cull female and all male progeny as feeder calves. The model assumes commercial producers will replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% of their breeding females in each subsequent generation. Traits included are as follows: calving ease direct and maternal, weaning weight, milk, heifer pregnancy, docility, mature cow weight, claw set and foot angle.
Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.
Docility (DOC), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized.
Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.
