"First of all, if you actually read this I want to thank you. One, for taking a moment to study if an Assmus Angus herd sire is right for your operation. Two, my wife seems to get after me more and more to get this drafted sooner every year. I’m only glad it is a couple paragraphs and not a novel. If I had to choose a word that best describes this group of bulls, consistency is the first one that comes to mind." I lead off with that paragraph from last year as every word holds true yet today! This offering truly has something for everybody. Half of the bulls are heifer bulls. With a lot of the heifers going back to the country to regrow our very low national cattle inventory, you should snag up half brothers throughout this offering. These bulls, as always, are raised on high fiber rations and growed up, not fed up. You will notice some younger bulls in this offering. First, we made a decision to move our calving window back from January 1st to February 1st so we could enjoy the holidays with all our family members. Then a couple purchased herd sires we trusted to get the job done broke tools and were a little over conditioned to begin with, so they set our program back another 30 days while they went on a diet to get in breeding shape! Finally, we called in the JG Herefords to cleanup and get us calves. Be on the look out this fall for some powerhouse bred F-1 heifers out of some of the best cows in our herd. As always, we would like to take this moment and thank past, present, and future buyers for putting your trust in our cattle. It is our neighborhood support from across our fences that have kept us improving our herd to help them improve theirs. This year we thank Platte Livestock and CattleUSA for the ease of sale day and exposure to a wider audience. Please join us before the sale for lunch in the sale barn café to shoot the bull! — EA, Assmus Angus “We have the bull for YOU!”

Statement from Sweetgrass Veterinary Services: Sweetgrass Veterinary Services is excited and proud to welcome everyone to the 2022 Assmus Angus bull production sale! Every year we look forward to partnering with this passionate cattle family on their animal health protocols and assisting in the preparation for this annual event. We encourage everyone to come take a look at the bulls and you will find this is one of the best offerings yet and they keep getting better and better every year. All sale bulls offered have passed a thorough breeding soundness exam which included evaluation of semen motility and morphology, scrotal measurements, and visual examination of eyes, hoof and leg conformation. To reduce stress and times through the chute, yearling bulls were also carcass ultrasounded by CUP Lab certified tech, Jeff Schoenfelder, at the time of the breeding exam. The bulls have received a complete vaccination protocol from birth to sale day and have received their first pre-breeding vaccination as well as a footrot, pinkeye and anthrax vaccinations. The bulls have been poured for the control of internal and external parasites and blood tested negative for BVD. In good practice, we do encourage a 3 week quarantine period before contact with your herd to allow them to get over the high risk time after the stress of transportation and to work with your local veterinarian to prepare your bull for breeding by repeating a fertility test prior to pasture turn out. We will be available on sale day to answer any health questions and to provide health papers for bulls traveling out of state. We can be reached by phone at (605) 928-8387 or email at vet@sweetgrassvets.com. Kind Regards, Erik Holum DVM

Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire's calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.

Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire's genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf's weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size. Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size. Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires. (As defined by the American Angus Association.)
