Power isn't control at all--power is strength, and giving that strength to others. A leader isn't someone who forces others to make him stronger; a leader is someone willing to give his strength to others that they may have the strength to stand on their own.

hat a year!!! 2017 was the year of survival of the ttest. Everywhere I go and with everyone I talk to, I get the same comments. 2017 was exhausting!!! Thank you Lord it's over. But you know what, instead of complaining about it we need to celebrate it. I recently saw a video clip of men dancing with a cofn, excitedly might I add, I think that's the attitude we need to have about this passing year. We are still here. We survived, we need to hug ourselves. So we got scars here and there, but it's those scars that remind us just how much we can endure. In 2017 GX we went through a transformation that only comes with time and perseverance. There is excitement about New Year's possibilities. We have gained and we have lost. As a friend of mine always says “It all works together for good for those who love the Lord”. I do not like snakes but I know at one point in their lives they shed old skin for a new smoother one. We also must lose some things we no longer need, to open room for new life experiences. Let's enter into 2018 with gratefulness to have the opportunity some did not get. In August we hosted Thami Ngubeni for our Annual New Woman Talk Show and she said something that stuck with me and I move with it anywhere I go. She said, “As long as you still wake up in the morning, it means you're not done, it means you have not given the world what you carry with you. You have not completed your earthly mission”. We are not here to eat, sleep and die. We are here to deliver for the betterment of the world. I know most of you stopped making New Year's resolutions, I haven't. I like to start a year with hopes and dreams because then that reminds me what I want. In 2018, take your place and own it. If life hits, hit harder. If you feel like you're running on sticky mud, don't stop, keep moving. Surround yourself with people that are willing to hold you when you fall. Ditch people that want you to be something you're not, you don't owe them anything.

Lets start 2018 with a fresh mindset, reminding ourselves that we are what we constantly dwell on with our minds. You are exactly what you think you are. There is no lter. 2018 is going to be exactly what you think it's going to be. How you think 2018 is going to be might even be multiplied, so be careful what you put in your mind.

"For I know the plans I have for you," says the LORD. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. - Jeremiah 29:11

You are exactly what you think you are. There is no lter.

Be brave, be courageous, be humble, work hard, focus and pray. From myself, my family and my team... Happy New Year! May it be the greatest one yet.

The King warns against anything that threatens the land of the Zulus In of 139 year since the Anglo-Zulu war, it was ironic that the King found himself still ghting the same war. The war that threatens to steal land from the hands of the Zulus. The King warned the ruling party not to make decisions that might cause unnecessary wars. “I promise you I will not allow anyone to take away the life and soul of the Zulu nation. I warned Mr Ramaphosa and the governing party not to make the mistake of taking away the land of the Zulus, because all hell will break loose,” said the King The King sighted the fact that in all the farms that the ruling part has bought, none have bared fruits, there has not been any successful results, at least not that He has been informed about. FREEZING PRECIOUS

Sphephelo Khanyile – popularly known as “Peh”, owner of SK PHOTOGRAPHY says his stumble into the world of photography was accidental. Peh is responsible for most of our Cover and Fashion Spread shoots by Nqobile Nene A bit about you and where you are based?

with technology. This also makes people be less reliant on professional photographers as they feel they can I live in Ngwelezane, a township in manage. Also with technology business Empangeni, north of KZN. I was actually born in the famous Nkandla. I was raised has not been that frequent, and while the by my grandmother. Both my parents are equipment and technology advance, prices are also going high, meaning both still alive, I had 5 siblings but unfortunately, two are late. I hate injustice the photographer and the client have to and unfairness with a passion. Travelling part with good money to get the best and hiking are my greatest times on earth. outcomes. When did you decide photography was what you wanted I actually came across photography by some kind of frustration. I was attending a youth camp and they had only one photographer and it was still the times of using lm so the number of shots were limited so he was careful whom he would shoot. So this guy was mostly attending to calls from ladies and that meant I was coming back with no photos. I then said to myself next camp I will come with my own, and indeed it was so I have never put it down and I have been growing and improving ever since. From wanting to have my personal moments captured to openly embracing it as an extension of me and it, ending up describing who I am.

The best memory as a photographer There are so many, but it has to be my second developed negatives that came out so beautifully - the rst ones were destroyed because I couldn't properly insert lm. I am self-taught so seeing my prints come out and with such great composition was so satisfying.

How is the photography industry A very vibrant space to be in, needing innovative minds. It requires passion and endless learning. It can be very rewarding shortly, it can also be a ticket to an amazing life. Right now its the survival of the strongest, because of technology and many players, it’s so easy to enter but it’s the staying in it that will require beyond average from you. Functions that used to be so difcult have been made so easy

Would you recommend photography as a career? Yes of course, but just like with anything worth doing I would add caution and say, you have to like it and be passionate about it, also nd your niche area, because some of us are not made to shoot anything and everything that requires pictures, as you grow you need to nd out that specialty and that signature look of your work.

What makes great photography Funny enough it doesn’t have to take all the fancy equipment in the world and the greatest lensmen and women, the greatest picture for me is the message it brings across. Whether intended or not but it has to strike something and awaken it. It then follows that the more you are good at putting that message across great photography is made.

Do you have a favourite photograph? I have many, I am a sentimental person so I get to attach with beautiful moments and a photo will always sum it the best for me.

Who is your international photography idol Photography often times has a male face, but Annie Leibovitz is a legend, she infuses herself in her work with minimal effort, with her subjects always dominating, and here at home Peter Magubane let his work spread the word all over the world with such a compelling message. They are my all-time inspiration

Days Digital Cleanse Challenge: Can you shut off the Smartphone and Walk Away?

13 13 | Mar/Apr ‘18 | www.beadsmag.co.za

if I had to take a digital cleanse .......

Do you ever feel like you're on digital overdrive? What's with having to jump between checking your sms, WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, keeping up with other people's statuses, oh how can I forget keeping up with all the gossip thanks to Black Twitter….? Yet you don't actually know what's going on in your own life. Then it's time for a digital cleanse. Dr. Rosen, author of iDisorder: Understanding our Obsession with Technology and Overcoming Its Hold On Us, is alarmed at the rapidity of technological change in today's society. Our online lives are increasingly reactive—we communicate because we can, not because we need to. It is ideal to take regular technology breaks and recommended that all adults do a complete technology cleanse a couple of times a year, even if they are not exhibiting signs of technology addiction. In the same way that cutting out sugar for several days can eliminate poor eating habits, a technology cleanse can be a boon to fostering a healthy relationship with technology. When you complete a detox of this nature, life begins to take on a different look. You start paying more attention; you are more present to the here and now. Take regular breaks from technology to give the brain a chance to adjust and re-set back to normal functioning. A prolonged break from the daily grind of blrrpts, bleeps, and dings can provide a chance to remember what life was like before technology dominated it: Remember what that was like? Here's how to complete a technology. A minimum of three days is recommended; longer durations are encouraged.

When we fail to give our brains a chance to rest or pause—to take some time to not be busy—it is difficult for the brain to store and remember information. Humans need a break to be contemplative and introspective, and research has shown that multi-tasking is quite bad for us. After completing the cleanse you can consider integrating a weekly digital technology sabbath: Pick one day of the week to refrain from using digital technology, and notice how the extra time spent offline gives you the opportunity to be reflective, creative, human, and, best of all—relaxed.

Your entire life only happens in this moment. The present moment is life itself. Yet, people live as if the opposite were true and treat the present moment as a stepping stone to the next moment - a means to an end.

Nick Bulunga Specialist stakeholder relations and public affairs at Tronox

.........the following three things would come up on top of my list: 1. Three days of bush camp where there is no network. In fact, it would not be a bad idea that the camp may not even have a television set. 2. I would switch off my mobile set. This would give me an opportunity to do my other love which is writing poetry and lately, short stories. 3. I would spend time in my vegetable fields working with people who assist me there. It is for me the most therapeutic exercise of all.

1. Put the smartphone completely away and use a land line instead. (If you don't have one, consider buying an inexpensive flip phone.)

Mandy Govender Communications Ofcer at City of uMhlathuze

2. Take a total vacation from TV.

.........I would definitely focus on my family....building relationships and rekindling our love, planning a retreat away from home. Hitting the gym....more time working out instead of sitting on my devices. Getting in touch with nature and admiring Gods beautiful creation.

3. Create an automated response for incoming email to let friends and colleagues know you will be away, but that you can be contacted via landline if needed. 4. Unplug completely from the Internet, turning off all devices completely: Shut down all tablets, smartphones, laptops, and all other digital technology. 5. Refrain from reading on screens; get your news the old fashioned way by relying on physical newspapers, magazines, and books.

We are so consumed with digital devices that we lose touch with people who are right in front of us, my take is 'put the devices away and nurture family bonds’

Social Media YOUR EMPLOYER OR POTENTIAL IS GOOGL-ING YOU Gone are the days when all you needed was a perfectly written and binded CV to earn yourself a shot on being called to an interview for your dream job. Now.…. Now Big Brother is watching By: Stella Liang

15

Besides their intention to verify your experience and background information, employers also want to learn about your personality: what your hobbies and interests are, what you do outside of school (part-time and/or extracurricular activities), and are you a good fit with the company culture?

Some managers send applicants friend requests or follow requests. Recently, a friend of mine actually received a friend request from his current employer. A simple reason why employers Google you or "follow" you on social networks is, of course, to learn more about you. This hints that they are genuinely interested in you after reading your resume and cover letter, and perhaps even considering inviting you for an interview. So, from an employer's perspective, how do you navigate the role of social media in your job application process? According to a recent survey released by CareerBuilder, more than 52% of employers used social media to help determine whether candidates' skills and qualications met the job requirements. More than 2000 full-time human resources experts took part in the survey. Besides their intention to verify your experience and background information, employers also want to learn about your personality: what your hobbies and interests are, what you do outside of school (part-time and/or extracurricular activities), and are you a good t with the company culture? When it comes to sensitive topics, such as religion and marital status, that interviewers are not supposed to ask during the interview, they will ask Google instead. With the high hiring, training, and turnover costs, employers research candidates via almost every possible online channel to ensure you've got what they're looking for.

Don’t get passed up According to another article from CareerBuilder, the trend of employers passing on applicants after researching

them online is experiencing an increase. More than a third of employers admitted that they would not interview a candidate if they could not nd any information about her or him online. Some employers even screen out candidates after they check the applicants' social networks. One main reason applicants are screened out is that potential employers are not very impressed at what applicants have shared online, either publicly or privately, causing employers to question the applicants' professionalism. What it boils down to, based on the result of the survey, is that social media can affect your chance of getting hired negatively. This survey gathered information from more than 2000 experts in the eld of human resources, and it indicated that employers turned down applicants due to one or more of the reasons stated below:

The applicant's personality ts with the company culture - 46% Background information supported their professional qualications for the job –45% The candidate showed a professional image – 43% The candidate is well-rounded – 40% Demonstrated great communication skills – 40% Some Final Words…

Woman know your rights Domestic Violence Act (No. 116 of 1998) To provide for the issuing of protection orders with regard to domestic violence; and for matters connected therewith.

“

The strength of a woman is not measured by the impact that all her hardships in life have had on her; but the strength of a woman is measured by the extent of her refusal to allow those hardships to dictate her and who she becomes.

The Domestic Violence Act was passed to extend the protection provided by its predecessor, the Prevention of Family Violence Act. The Act recognises that domestic violence is not a private matter but is a serious crime against society. The legislation broadens the deď€ nition of domestic violence to include not only married women and children, but unmarried women who are involved in relationships or living with their partners, people in same-sex relationships, mothers and their sons, and other people who share a living space.

17

The Acts sets out what police must do when they arrive at a domestic violence scene. It recognises that abuse may take many different forms: domestic violence, sexual abuse, economic abuse and emotional and psychological abuse. Victims can lay a criminal charge, get a protection order, get a court order to have the abuser's gun removed and lodge a claim for pain and suffering as well as medical costs. Other remedies may also be available, depending on the exact nature of the abuse.

The Mothering Job I watched my Mom fill out an application. I looked at the line that asks about past professions. I thought to myself, that space is too small To write down what she's been, to cover it all. She was a nurse when I fell and scraped my knee. She was a maid when I didn't wipe my feet. She was a designer when my clothes didn't match. She was a tailor when my pants needed a patch. She was a teacher when I asked a question. She was a priest when I had a confession. She was a psychiatrist when I came home crying. She was a preacher when I got caught lying. She was a singer when she sung me to sleep. She was a lifeguard when she said the water's too deep. There are many more, yet the best one to me, She was a best friend and mine forever she'll be.

ongs have been used to mark joyous occasions since humans realised the voice can be used as an instrument of pleasure. Busiswa Gqulu has been really generous with her voice, even before she found fame and became a sought after vocalist. She left the nger-snapping world of poetry in Durban for the thumping beats of House when Kalawa Jazzmee Records approached her.

That Kalawa call led to DJ Zinhle's 2012 smash hit, “My Name Is” - released in March, 2012. Busiswa signed to Kalawa in June, 2012. Her 2012 accomplishments brought light to her life after she lost her mom in 2011. Her debut album “Highly Flavoured” was released on 8 December, 2017. She spent the ve years between her signing and release of her debut blessing good-time enthusiasts with solo tracks, and collaborations with almost all the recognisable Dance music DJs and producers and some features on non-Dance tunes for balance.

When a Busiswa song comes on you want to move something, she has the power. Proof of how powerful she can be is found in her accolades register, which includes a Most Gifted Dance award at the 2014 Channel O Music Video Awards. She beat megastars, P-Square and Davido to take the award home.

Pressures of the entertainment industry can separate certain entertainers from their truth just to cater to the paying audience. That has never been the case for Busiswa. People embraced her music and its presentation the way it was. She didn't have to, “lose weight, get surgery, or get a bigger *ss”. Busiswa knows her worth and feels strongly about taking charge of her own space at all times. Her self-assurance can be attributed to the connection she has with God through Christianity. She enjoys going to church - as much as she can - to refresh and learn how to live a more spiritually fullling life. She subscribes to the teachings of Christianity and draws from traditional Xhosa principles for guidance. The extensive use of her indigenous language, isiXhosa on her songs is an exhibition of the pride she has in her culture. Growing up in a traditional Xhosa household Busiswa was taught the value of humility, and the importance of respecting your elders and peers.

These are values she hopes to pass on to her son, Lakhanya. The midnight starring gave birth to her son in January, 2018. Expectant parents react differently to getting news of a pregnancy. The reaction scale ranges from panic to joy. As surprised as she was when she found out, Busiswa's immediate reaction was joy, her thinking then transformed into planning mode. Kids are gifts from God and Busiswa is ready to guide her gift to the highest heights. Her mom's teachings will also come in handy. Her mom was a hero who taught her to be fearless on her pursuit of happiness. She remembers the hard work her mother put into making sure her family was taken care of. “It's always okay to start over no matter how many times you fall. No matter how many times you fail.”

Those words fuel Busiswa's drive to be a fearless woman who keeps going. Lakhanya is not the only child Busiswa wants to have access to for future-securing opportunities. She wants to empower girl children from overlooked rural areas by making their environment conducive to their dreams. A child's dream dies when the lack of resources is a constant reminder that, 'this will forever be your life'. Oscar winning actress and star of hit series, 'How To Get Away With Murder', Viola Davis once said, “The only thing that separates women of colour from anyone else is opportunity.” The same can be said about girls from disadvantaged backgrounds, that's why Busiswa is stepping up to be of service. She wants to be remembered for having a direct impact on people's lives. 2017 was the year of the “Midnight Starring”, the song is ranked 43rd in the 2017 Shazam South Africa Top 100, a spot above another ubiquitous jam, Kwesta's “Spirit”. The song has been certied platinum, it was also a strong contender for the coveted Ukhozi FM “Ingoma Ehlukanisa Unyaka” title. Busiswa's distinct style can be heard on a litany of other hits including, “Ngoku”, “My Name Is”, “Isicathulo”, “Bazoyenza”. Her, “distinctly African” performance had the Miami Music Conference crowd gasping when she performed “My Name Is” in 2012. Busiswa plans on strengthening her global presence while remaining true to herself. So what is a midnight starring? In short….. a boss. Someone who has control of their life's trajectory and owns the consequences of their actions. Midnight-starring is a nonbinary term, we can all be one. We will continue to root for Busiswa's distinct brand of Dance music until our knees and hips give in.

“It's always okay to start over no matter how many times you fall. No matter how many times you fail.”

daily routine

Nature gives you the face you have at twenty; it is up to you to merit the face you have at fifty

– Coco Chanel.

1. develop a routine. Wash your face twice daily: once in the morning, and once at night. There's a reason for this. In the morning, you're prepping your skin to receive topical products like antioxidants, moisturizers, and sunscreens. In the evening, you're washing away all the impurities that built up through the day, like dirt and environmental toxins. So you guessed it — this means cleaning off your makeup every night. No exceptions! Makeup not only clogs your pores but also traps dirt and pollution on your skin, blocking it from essential repair while you sleep. When your face is clean, apply a hyaluronic acid-based moisturizer like Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream Moisturizer. You'll wake up looking even more refreshed than you feel.

2. turn down the heat. There's temptation in the colder months to soak under a hot stream every chance you get, but according to Daniel Abouhim, M.D., founder of Refined Aesthetics, your skin will be healthier and less dry when you keep the water temperature warm rather than hot. (Use the same principle when washing your hands to avoid scaling and flaking skin.) In addition, Dr Abouhim recommends limiting the length of your shower and patting the moisture from your skin with a soft towel instead of rubbing it.

damage and age before other parts of the body. The best time to apply moisturizer is right after your shower when your skin is most primed to absorb it. A body oil will lock in moisture all over without leaving you greasy.

3. slather up! In addition to using moisturizer on your face, pay special attention to your eyes, which have the thinnest skin on your body, says Dr Chiu. Treat the area with an eye cream that contains growth factors, retinol, and Vitamin C to boost collagen production and skin thickness. Other vulnerable areas include the neck, decolletage, hands, and arms, which all show signs of sun

weekly routine 4. always wear sunscreen. If you only follow one piece of advice, apply sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day, whether or not the sun is shining. Sunscreens not only protect against skin cancer, says Dr Chiu, but also decrease the development of wrinkles, keep pigment even and help your skin barrier stay healthy. Look for a broadspectrum formula — that means UVA and UVB blockers — that has a physical ingredient such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, says Dr Palm. 5. give your body what it needs. You know the drill. Drink water, get plenty of sleep (ideally eight hours) and eat clean to avoid breakouts. Debbie Palmer, M.D., dermatologist and creator of Replere skincare, recommends antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables, while Dr Abouhim swears by a low-sodium diet to prevent puffiness.

1. Exfoliate with an athome peel. You're probably already using an exfoliating cleanser two-to-three times per week to slough away dead skin cells, but to take your skin to the next level, Dr. Palm recommends gentle exfoliation with a mixed beta-and-alpha hydroxy acid peel, which removes dead skin cells to reveal the taut, glowing skin underneath.

2. unwind under a soothing sheet mask. Nourish your skin with a soothing sheet mask to improve tone and encourage collagen production. Pick a day each week to unwind for the 10 to 15 minutes it takes for the mask to work its magic. Not only will you be infusing your face with skinhealthy ingredients, but taking a break from your busy life will reward you with a decrease in blemishes. Studies show that lowering stress leads to clearer skin. You can take it one step further by tailoring the mask to your skin type. For acne-prone or oily skin, Dr. Palm recommends ingredients like sulfur or charcoal, while those with parched skin should look for a more hydrating mask with ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or thermal spring water.

3. stay active. You might not think your workout has anything to do with your skin, but hitting the gym at least three times a week tightens skin and reduces stress, which in turn minimizes breakouts. Also, fuel up once a week with a protein rich in omega 3 fatty acids, like salmon, and snack on almonds and walnuts, both of which prevent inflammation, says Dr. Ahoubim. 4. don't neglect your tools. You could have a world-class skin care regimen, but if you aren't paying attention to the surfaces that you come in contact with daily, you could be undoing all that TLC. Dr. Palmer advises her patients to clean all makeup brushes, cell phones, and pillow cases weekly. Not sure how to clean your makeup brushes without damaging them? Here's our quick and easy guide.

How to wear red lipstick like a pro Match the shade to your complexion One of important tips on how to wear red lipstick is to match the shade to your complexion. Different skin tones suit different shades of red. Put powder on top for staying power In the same way that you wouldn't skip setting your make-up, it's important not to overlook setting your lipstick, especially if it's an eye-catching red. To give your lippy staying power even when drinking or dancing, blot your lips with a tissue and apply a thin layer of powder on top when you've reached your nished look. Use liner all over Lining you lips when you're wearing a red is an absolute must to save you from embarrassing 'bleed' marks and smudging. A great tip on how to wear red lipstick like a pro that will help you boost the staying power of your lipstick is to ll in your entire lips with your liner before your apply your lipstick. This base coat acts as a primer and will ensure your lips are dry and the surface even and ready for your nal product. Just make sure you choose a lip liner in the shade of your natural lips, to avoid a two-tone red effect. Not so hot.

The Smokey Eyes Step 1: You should always start with a clean base. Applying a primer allows the makeup to stay longer and makes it easier to blend the eye-shadows. Use a concealer under the eyes and on the eyelids to even out any discoloration. Step 2: Pack on black eyeshadow to the outer corner and into the crease. Step 3: Blend out the eyeshadow, so there aren’t any harsh lines. Step 4: If you feel that it needs more intensity you can pack on more color. Step 5: Apply a gel or pencil liner as close as you can to the lashline. Step 6: Smudge it out and blend it with the existing black eye shadow. Step 7: If you want to create an intense look, you can even take the eyeliner in the crease and deepen it. Make sure to blend it out well. Step 8: Take the liner under the eyes. Step 9: Smudge it out to create the smokey effect. Step 10: It’s time for the nishing touches. Apply your favorite volumizing mascara, and you’re good to go!

Glitter for a Sexy, Modern Look The thought of glitter eye makeup can be terrifying. And despite some's apprehension, nearly every major cosmetics brand seems to roll out a plethora of shimmery products. But relax there are tips on wearing a grown-up glittery eye. Start slowly. For a sexy, modern take, use a less-is-more approach by building up sparkle slowly to ensure you don't go overboard. And have some sticky tape on hand to take care of stray pieces in a snap. Neutrals are your BFFs. There is such a thing as sophisticated glitter, but it's all about creating balance. Neutral shades act as the perfect counterpart to shimmer, complementing it without being overpowering. Pair shimmer with matte shadow to add depth and denition. Look for liner. The most surere way to keep glitter from looking garish? Instead of covering your entire lid, choose an eyeliner with a bit of sparkle. If applied the right way it can look very modern and chic. For extra oomph, brush a bit of loose glitter onto the tips of your lashes immediately after swiping on your favorite mascara.

Downtime A CURE TO MANY SICKNESSES

They say you will sleep when you’re dead, well.... if you don’t sleep, you will be sooner than necessary

T

hese days everyone is an enemy of sleep forgetting that sleep plays a vital role in good health and well-being throughout your life. Getting enough quality sleep at the right times can help protect your mental health, physical health, quality of life, and safety. Do not be ashamed of sleeping early, it's not a sign of non-commitment, it's a sign of self-commitment. The way you feel while you're awake depends in part on what happens while you're sleeping. During sleep, your body is working to support healthy brain function and maintain your physical health. In children and teens, sleep also helps support growth and development. The damage from sleep deficiency can occur in an instant (such as a car crash), or it can harm you over time. For example, ongoing sleep deficiency can raise your risk for some chronic health problems. It also can affect how well you think, react, work, learn, and get along with others.

Healthy Brain Function and Sleep deficiency also has been linked to Emotional Well-Being depression, suicide, and risk-taking Sleep helps your brain work properly. While you're sleeping, your brain is preparing for the next day. It's forming new pathways to help you learn and remember information.

behavior. Children and teens who are sleep deficient may have problems getting along with others. They may feel angry and impulsive, have mood swings, feel sad or depressed, or lack motivation. They also may have problems paying attention, and they may get lower grades and feel stressed.

Studies show that a good night's sleep improves learning. Whether you're learning math, how to play the piano, how to perfect your golf swing, or how to drive a car, sleep helps enhance your learning and problem-solving skills. time, and make more mistakes. After several nights of losing sleep—even a loss of just 1–2 hours per night—your ability to function suffers as if you haven't slept at all for a day or two. Lack of sleep also may lead to microsleep. Microsleep refers to brief moments of sleep that occur when you're normally awake. You can't control microsleep, and you might not be aware of it. For example, have you ever driven somewhere and then not remembered part of the trip? If so, you may have experienced microsleep.

Lack of sleep may also lead to microsleep. Microsleep refers to brief moments of sleep that occur when you're normally awake. Even if you're not driving, microsleep can affect how you function. If you're listening to a lecture, for example, you might miss some of the information or feel like you don't understand the point. In reality, though, you may have slept through part of the lecture and not been aware of it. Some people aren't aware of the risks of sleep deficiency. In fact, they may not even realize that they're sleep deficient. Even with limited or poorquality sleep, they may still think that they can function well. teenagers showed that with each hour of sleep lost, the odds of becoming obese went up. Sleep deficiency increases the risk of obesity in other age groups as well. Sleep helps maintain a healthy balance of the hormones that make you feel hungry (ghrelin) or full (leptin). When you don't get enough sleep, your level of ghrelin goes up and your level of leptin goes down. This makes you feel hungrier than when you're well-rested. Sleep also affects how your body reacts to insulin, the hormone that controls your blood glucose (sugar) level. Sleep deficiency results in a higher than normal blood sugar level, which may increase your risk for diabetes. Sleep also supports healthy growth and development. Deep sleep triggers the body to release the hormone that promotes normal growth in children

and teens. This hormone also boosts muscle mass and helps repair cells and tissues in children, teens, and adults. Sleep also plays a role in puberty and fertility.

“Listeriosis” Suddenly you find yourself questioning every meat in a supermarket, The sight of polony you bought just two weeks ago becomes a topic “Should we eat this” “But no one died here” “Eat it at your own risk”. All of this is thanks to the big bad word “Listeriosis” What is listeriosis? Listeriosis is food poisoning caused by eating foods contaminated with the Listeria monocytogenes bacterium. In pregnant women, the infection can result in miscarriage, premature delivery, serious infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth. Listeriosis affects mainly pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and adults with impaired immune systems. Healthy adults and children sometimes are infected with L. monocytogenes, but they rarely become

L. monocytogenes is found in soil and water. Vegetables can become contaminated from the soil or from manure used as fertilizer. How is it treated? An otherwise healthy person who is not pregnant typically does not need treatment. Symptoms will usually go away within a few weeks. If you are pregnant and get listeriosis, antibiotics

can often prevent infection of the fetus or newborn. Babies who have listeriosis receive the same antibiotics as adults, although a combination of antibiotics is often used until your doctor is certain the cause is listeriosis.

Former President, Jacob Zuma Launched the KwaZulu-Natal Invest SA One Stop Shop in Durban

9 Tips to staying focused Ÿ Minimize multitasking.

Multitaskers might seem superhuman, but they pay a big price, they perform more poorly on attention spans, memory capacity, and ability to switch from one task to the next

Ÿ Meditate.

If the saying "practice makes perfect" is true, then meditation is a sure way to enhance focus because it takes a great deal of concentration.

The President of the Republic of South Africa, Mr Jacob Zuma launched the InvestSA One Stop Shop – KwaZulu-Natal (Invest SA OSS) on 18 November 2017 at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre. The aim of the provincial Invest SA OSS is to provide strategic guidance, reduce regulatory inefficiencies, and reduce red tape for all investors looking to invest in KwaZuluNatal. The process leading to the launch has been an excellent example of collaboration between different levels of government, with the centre to be jointly operated by the Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) with the Provincial government and KwaZulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs. Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies said that the value-proposition for the Provincial One Stop Shops is the coordination and incorporation of the special economic zones, provincial investment agencies, local authorities and the relevant government departments involved in regulatory, registration, permits and licensing matters. “South Africa has excellent investment opportunities in all sectors of the economy and a host of investment incentives and industrial financing interventions that are aimed at encouraging commercial activity and, trade rules that favour a further expansion in South Africa's burgeoning levels of international trade,” says Davies. The Premier of KwaZulu-Natal, Mr Willies Mchunu said this facility will assist in facilitating foreign direct investment.

Ÿ Exercise regularly.

Exercise isn't just good for the body. It promotes brain health, too, which is important for memory capacity and concentration.

Ÿ Establish a to-do list.

To-do lists not only help you prioritize what tasks you need to get done first, but they can also serve as a record of the loose ends.

prosperous province with a healthy, secure and skilled population and acting as a gateway to Africa and the World. As guided by the Provincial Growth and Development Plan, we are focusing on different sectors of the economy such as ICT, maritime, drilling of oil and gas and chemical manufacturing. We continue to invite potential investors representing these sectors, from other parts of the globe, and directing them to all corners of the province including the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone and the Dube Trade Port,” Mchunu points out. President Jacob Zuma formally announced the establishment of InvestSA in the State of the Nation Address and also informed business leaders of the initiative in February 2016. Business people had informed government on many occasions of the difficulties and delays they incur when having to move from one department or institution to another to obtain licences and other services and the government has responded through this initiative. The InvestSA OSS is a government programme to prioritise and promote investment in South Africa. The National Invest SA One Stop Shop is housed at the dti Campus in Pretoria.

“Our long-term vision is to become a

If you're feeling groggy, grab a cup of joe or other caffeinated substance. Studies suggest that caffeine may, in moderate doses, help to boost focus.

Ÿ Take breaks.

Whether it's watching cat videos, taking a walk, or closing your eyes for a few minutes at a time, it is critical to take the occasional break from work.

Ÿ Keep work at work.

Completely separate yourself after leaving the office and have a "long separation" before the next work day.

Ÿ Train your brain to focus.

Your brain is a mental muscle, and some studies have found that people who are easily distracted will benefit from "brain training" exercises.

Ÿ Try to find a quiet place.

Ambient noise, like cars honking or kids screaming, can stimulate the release of the stress hormone cortisol.

Durban's best ever airfreight volumes Durban's international cargo volumes in quarter 3 increased by 13.7% when compared to the same period last year; this is on the back of the highest ever recorded cargo throughput during the months of October and November 2017, which exceeded the 1,700 tonne mark per month for the first time. This growth has been primarily driven by the introduction of additional widebodied passenger flights into Durban, as well as the increased frequency of chartered aircraft using Durban's King Shaka International Airport. “Investment in a new specialised outsized cargo handling facility has significantly contributed to our ability to handle bulky shipments, such as large pipes, machinery, vehicles, large animals and even ocean-going 20-foot containers. This infrustructure, as well as the systems that we have in place, has enabled our supply-chain

specialists to respond quickly to the needs of our freight forwarders by providing them with a reliable and competitive solution for their charters flying into Durban,” says Mr Mlibo Bantwini, Executive, Dube Cargo Terminal. The latest chartered aircraft handled by Dube Cargo Terminal was a Boeing 747-400ERF freighter, operated by AirBridgeCargo Airlines, which had a payload of 30 tonnes of heavy duty seaflex marine hoses. Dube Cargo Terminal has demonstrated a positive trend over the last seven years since the airport opened in 2010, with cargo volumes having grown by 138%. Cargo volumes are still forecast to grow by up to 12% by the close of the 2017/18 Financial Year.

Further growth is anticipated at Durban's King Shaka International Airport as Qatar Airways has announced its intentions to increase its capacity on the Durban – Doha route with the introduction of the larger Boeing 777-300ER aircraft as of 28 March 2018, which will bring on board an additional 416 weekly seats on its four times weekly schedule, while further increasing the weekly cargo capacity on the route by 15-23 tonnes per flight. In October, Air Mauritius increased its frequency to three flights per week on its Durban – Port Louis route, while the peak season of December and January spurred Emirates to increase its frequency on the Durban – Dubai route.

Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it even if I may not have it at the beginning. ― Mahatma Gandhi

More working Class South Africans are hooked on Energy drinks

51

I had just started studying for the Bar Exam when I realized the extent of legal information I'd have to retain wasn't humanly possible. Terrified of failing, I sought outside help in a "can". Within minutes of drinking RedBull, my focus sharpened, my motivation increased and my brain processed information like I was a superhero. In fact, my 15-hour study days seemed to fly by, and I found I couldn't wait to crack open my Property textbook the next morning Energy drinks are flying off the shelves in the South Africa market. Walk into any filling station shop and look around, you will see at least 3 people carrying in their hands either RedBull, Monster or Play. If you had to blame someone, you would've to blame the pressure we put on ourselves. The expensive goals we set for ourselves, the craving for success, and the motivations that say “ayikho inkomo yobuthongo” (you won't get anything through sleep). We want to be good at everything. “I want to be a good employee, and come home be great dad, not lose my youth therefor I need to spend time with my friends, on my way to see them, I need to pass by and see my parents to catch up, when I get there my sister will want advise or a shoulder to cry on because I am a responsible brother”….. it's exhausting.

12 Signs of Energy Drink Addiction

First of all, slow down already! You can't be everything to everyone all at the same time. You might have been able to juggle when you were younger, but with age, more balls are added and more risk you might drop one. Energy drinks are a temporal solution to a permanent situation. Not only that, they are a solution that might end your life quickly.

There's a thin line between boosting your energy and pumping yourself with sugar and caffeine every 6 hours, that line is called addiction.

You have to have an energy drink as soon as you wake up in the morning. You consume multiple energy drinks throughout the day. If you don't have your usually energy drink, you become irritable and not fun to be around. You are sometimes late for work because you have to stop at the store for an energy drink. You spend at least R200 a week on these beverages. You drink energy drinks with most or all meals. You use energy drinks in place of getting a good night's sleep of at least 7-8 hours. You get a caffeine withdrawal headache if you miss a day of normal consumption. Your friends and family are constantly nagging you about how many you consume throughout the course of the day. You can't concentrate and be productive at work without energy drinks. You never drink plain water, but only energy drinks and sodas. You still feel tired even after drinking an energy drink due to your huge tolerance to caffeine.

KZN has some of the most chilling and most exciting ghost adventures and ghost stories you may ever experience. There are a number of unearthly characters that consistently appear on the dramatic stage of the haunting ghost stories of KZN. Most of them feature in the Midlands Meander and in Pietermaritzburg. Nottingham Road, on the Midlands Meander Ÿ Miranda', the ghost of the former Natal Training College in the Garden City or Pietermaritzburg Ÿ Sergeant Bosch', the ghost of the Polo Tavern, in Pietermaritzburg History has it that the ghost traveler of Ketelfontein was hunted down and shot by the police for being in possession of illegal diamonds – which were considered to be worth a small fortune. He hid the diamonds away before the police had captured him and to this day, they have not been found. So if you're hoping to bump into this ghost and perhaps discover his riches too – do place Old Howick Road, Pietermaritzburg, on your list of places to visit in KZN. Apart from the well-known ghosts that you could meet during your ghost adventures along Midlands Meander and in Pietermaritzburg, there are a few buildings in KZN that may, upon entering them, also send chills down your spine. These are some of the more mainstream ghost

stories that are told from generation to generation: Ÿ The'eerie'City Oval Stadium, also known as Alexandra Park in Pietermaritzburg Ÿ Victoria Mansions in Durban, haunted by a little boy who committed suicide Ÿ The Playhouse Company's Theatre and City Hall in Durban, both 'home' to several ghosts Ÿ The Old Berea Nursing Home where the infamous 'Daisy de Melker” once studied Ÿ The 'Spookhouse' of Musgrave Road, which is Durban's most well-known haunted house The unearthly characters of these ghost stories are said to mostly show up in the dark of the night. But there have been several reports of sounds, of the ghosts of Alexandra Park on late, hot and humid afternoons – when the area is shrouded by thick fog. Encounters include the voices of an umpire loudly hollering 'six' – and someone shouting 'bravo!', as if from the grandstand, to mention but a few. Even though there is no actual match being played! Well, are you up for it?
