Thank you for our 62nd season.
What can I say that will express the depth of our gratitude for your unflagging support through these perilous days? I feel as if I’m sending you a dispatch from the distant front of a conflict. I cannot help but think of Winston Churchill’s remarks to the Royal Academy, reflecting on the critical role of art in shaping who we are: “Ill fares the race which fails to salute the arts with the reverence and delight which are their due.” You have shown that reverence with your support and it is our hope that the work we have brought you this season has inspired that delight. This year, so much of what we take for granted has been proven vulnerable. But what has also been proven is that we are each other’s greatest strength. You have recognized the power of theatre to bring people together, even over a distance, and you have come together to say we are a community that deeply values empathy, that cherishes artistry, and that celebrates humanity. The work we made this year was produced under the most stringent guidelines to ensure artist, audience, and staff safety. For institutions without similarly robust support, these measures presented a nonstarter. But as you have always done, you have challenged and equipped us to use this as a time for innovation. You have encouraged our creativity and reinvigorated this institution. With your help, I am confident that when we look back at this period of incredible apprehension and instability, we will be proud of the work we’ve made this season. With minds full of admiration and hearts full of love, we push ahead. Yours,
Michael D. Edwards Producing Artistic Director
