Our Farewell Season

Our Farewell Season

I’VE BEEN THE PRODUCING ARTISTIC DIRECTOR of Asolo Repertory Theatre for nearly 20 years. I can’t quite believe it. I am regularly asked: “what are you proudest of?” but it’s very difficult to answer the question. There’s the Koski Center, Coville artist housing, the industry-leading upgrades of our entire technological infrastructure, and the solid financial footing represented by a truly healthy endowment, as well as so many particular productions about which I feel an immense sense of accomplishment. But along with pride in what we have all achieved together, with the challenges we have embraced, difficulties we have overcome, I have an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the singular and passionate commitment to the theatre and our mission that the board, supporters, staff, artists, and audiences have shown.

This season is a high-water mark, combining the best of that uniquely American artform – the musical – with incredible plays that transcend the circumstances of their stories to speak to us all here and now. From the shocking historical reverberations of Cabaret to the aspirational mantra of “all for one and one for all” in Ken Ludwig’s The Three Musketeers; the life-affirming vitality of the imaginative act which defies oppression at the center of Man of La Mancha to the inspired quest for discovery fueling Silent Sky; and the hilarious challenges of enduring familial bonds in both Chicken & Biscuits and Incident at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, all these plays provide a profoundly illuminating contemporary resonance. This is a season of must-see events.

None of this would be possible without my extraordinary partner, Linda DiGabriele. Her business acumen is rivaled only by her genuine love for the art of theatre, her remarkable instincts, and her unflappable courage. Our decision to make way for the next visionary leaders to helm Asolo Rep is made with great confidence in the creative future of our beloved institution. There are so many wonderful opportunities just around the corner.

It is no secret that the past two years have seen the theatre industry around the world battered by relentless setbacks. However, we are now equipped with the tools and safety strategies that will enable us to gather together again and experience the power of great stories, brilliantly told. We cannot wait to welcome you back. Your unending support has brought us to this point, and I know it will see the theatre through whatever challenges lie ahead.

While I may not have imagined it at first, Sarasota has become my home in so many ways. A creative, artistic, and spiritual home that has shaped my sense of what is of real value. Thank you all for believing in my striving to tell the truth, to share a vision, and help so many others make Asolo Rep their home. I could not be more grateful.

Thank you for joining me on this joyous ride,

THIS SEASON REPRESENTS EVERYTHING I have come to know and love about the theatre that has been my home for the last 50 years. Beloved classics freshly brought to life as only Asolo Rep can, newer works providing some of the sharpest and funniest social commentaries of our time, and at the center of it all, a commitment to the search for truth.

We continue to lean in towards recovery and renewal following the challenges of the past two years. With your support we have overcome unprecedented obstacles with considerable grace and ingenuity, remaking our theatre again, and adapting it to meet the needs of today.

I cannot imagine a greater partner in all this than my exceptional and esteemed theatre partner, Michael Donald Edwards – an artistic leader with a vibrant vision whose integrity and devotion to the art of storytelling I have come to trust wholeheartedly. When we planned this season, our last as the leadership team of Asolo Rep, we had an eye on the horizon and the major shift that will provide new opportunities for envisioning the future. We wanted to be sure the organization would be on the most solid ground possible, primed for the next great chapter in its epic story. With your help, we have done just that.

I begin this season with high expectation and huge gratitude. How fortunate and privileged I have been to spend most of my professional career at Asolo Rep, working with dedicated and immensely talented colleagues and artists, supported by devoted and generous board members, patrons, and donors, in a community with unparalleled enthusiasm for the arts. It has been a thrilling opportunity to help grow Asolo Rep into one of today’s leading regional theatres and participate in guiding its astonishing trajectory. I will treasure the amazing moments when the remarkable power of the work reverberated throughout the theatre, transfixing, and often transforming, our audiences.

In the future you will find me close by, sitting in the audience, staunchly supporting every step forward and applauding every success.

With sincere thanks to everyone who makes the magic happen,

Welcome back to the Mertz Theatre as we begin our 64th season at Asolo Repertory Theatre. For the 2022-23 season, Producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards has put together another quality selection of musicals and plays, with award-winning directors and actors, that will entertain us, challenge our ethical/ political senses, help us to see the role of diversity in our lives, and help us to laugh at ourselves.

How lucky we are to have on our campus both Asolo Rep, a world class repertory theatre company, and the FSU/Asolo Conservatory, training the next generation of stars for the stage! This partnership has helped expand the grandeur and quality of the musical productions and plays. This season, the newest addition to Asolo Rep's Robert & Beverly Koski Center is the super rehearsal hall, which will be used for the first time by the company of the renowned musical Cabaret. These facilities will advance the quality of productions and potentially bring more original productions to our doorstep. We are grateful to the donors who contributed to our capital campaign, and encourage everyone to schedule a visit to see the Koski Center.

As you know, Michael Donald Edwards and Managing Director Linda DiGabriele will be leaving their positions at Asolo Rep next year. For the last 18 years, Michael has been the voice and face of the organization, and we are saddened to see him leave; however, we celebrate with him the beginning of the next phase of his life. Linda, for the last 50 years, has molded Asolo Rep into a phenomenal organization. Michael and Linda, we thank you for your dedication and success at Asolo Rep, and we thank you for bringing this theatre company to the national spotlight as one of the best repertory companies in the country.

This amazing repertory theatre and its state-of-the-art facilities can only operate in Sarasota with the support of patrons like you. On behalf of the Asolo Repertory Theatre Board of Directors, I thank you for your continued support and invite you to be a part of our 2022-23 productions by subscribing to the full season of plays. I look forward to seeing you at the Mertz.

FSU/Asolo Conservatory Partnership

President

Florida State University

On behalf of Florida State University, it’s a pleasure to join Asolo Repertory Theatre and the FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training in welcoming you to the 20222023 season.

Florida State University has a rich tradition of excellence in the arts, and we are proud of our relationship with the nationally recognized Asolo Rep. Our students and alumni helped build the foundation of this great theatre, and we value our ongoing partnership to prepare graduate students for the stage through the celebrated FSU/ Asolo Conservatory — under the leader ship of new director Andrei Malaev-Babel — and provide exceptional theatre for the Sarasota community and beyond.

This year, Asolo Rep celebrates the theme “In Here, Life is Beautiful” by staging two exciting musicals and four unforgettable plays, and the FSU/Asolo Conservatory also will present four plays.

Please enjoy what is sure to be a remarkable season!

JAMES FRAZIER, EdD, MFA Dean, College of Fine Arts Florida State University

This year marks a major transition for the FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training, as we bid farewell to Greg Leaming, who has stepped down to retire after many years of leadership, and excitedly welcome Andrei MalaevBabel into the role of Conservatory Director.

Malaev-Babel has served as a faculty member at the Conservatory since 2006, meaning he’s no stranger to FSU, Asolo Rep, or the Sarasota community. He is a true leader in the field of actor training, and we are thrilled to have him serving as our new director.

Other big changes are coming to Asolo Rep as well! We are saddened by the planned departure of longtime directors Linda DiGabriele and Michael Donald Edwards, who will exit the stage at the end of the season, but we’re looking forward with optimism to what lies ahead.

We are incredibly grateful for more than 50 years of partnership with Asolo Rep, which has yielded one of the best MFA Acting programs in the world. This success is a testament to the dedication of our faculty and of the staff of both organizations, and to the unique community of art supporters and theatre aficionados who make Sarasota such a special place.

ANDREI

Conservatory for Actor Training

The FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training is among the top 25 acting MFA programs in the English-speaking world. It is an incubator for the new generation of actors, who command perfect control over their process. Our MFA students feel safe to investigate and explore while relying on expert guidance. Our faculty of distinguished professionals synthesize research and practice to offer unparalleled methods for cultivating artists.

Due to the Conservatory’s unique relationship with Asolo Rep, our first-year actors understudy for the Asolo Rep season. In their second year, they embody their training on the Conservatory’s Cook Stage, where we hope you will join us for a season of exciting theatre! In their third year, they become associate company members with Asolo Rep. You are about to enjoy their work onstage.

The Conservatory prepares actors for their careers. Our alumni are sought after by theatres nationwide; others enjoy successful careers in film. They owe it to hard work and training, but also to the dedicated Sarasota philanthropists who have deeply invested in their education.

As you experience an Asolo Rep production today, you won’t be able to tell our students apart from the rest of the ensemble—a clear testament to the Conservatory’s curriculum, and to the incredible talent of our actors.

Shakespeare surely had a way with words, but his characters have difficulty reconciling words with actions. The King of Navarre and his friends swear to avoid women. “Now is not the time to be alone.” Looking for Ithaca: An Odyssey by Jess Shoemaker, Fall 2022 Asolo Rep On Tour. Theatre is for everyone.

Theatre is for everyone.

Art is everywhere. We consume it on stage, in media, in galleries, and in our headphones and devices. Theatre is the art of human stories, of human expression. Most of the time when you say the word theatre to someone, they imagine a proscenium stage with lights and costumes. But theatre is more than what happens onstage—it is part of our everyday lives. Giving a presentation at work? Performance. Dramatic lighting on a building? Design. Structuring an anecdote? Storytelling. Stories are everywhere and the skills learned through studying theatre are beneficial to all.

This is why programs like Access to the Arts, which impacted over 15,000 people in 2019, are important to our future: they help to create human connection.

Why focus on creativity? As our world changes, young people need to learn how to adapt---innovative thinking and creative problem solving are just two of the devices implemented through arts education. When we give students the room to stretch their imaginations, they are practicing and preparing for their future.

“Sitting across from me on the colorful, circular rug, are 15 PreK students bouncing up and down with excitement. It is time to become our story—not read our story, become our story. As I perform the book, I use my voice, face, and body to bring the words to life. And they move with me: climbing the ladder, pretending to jump off the diving board into the pool, expressing fear, then surprise, and finally joy. Together, we take a story and make it real.” Sara Brunow, Asolo Rep’s Muriel O’Neil Education & Engagement Director

Campaign for Growth and Expansion

Asolo Rep is expanding production and rehearsal facilities and investing in new education and engagement spaces. This campaign will serve the Sarasota/Manatee communities for generations to come and further our national reputation as a leading producer of new and traditional American theatre. Improved rehearsal facilities will support increasingly complex and exciting theatrical work at Asolo Rep, and our Education & Engagement programs will finally have the room necessary to truly thrive. Widely considered an incubator for new, high-quality artistic product, once the project is complete, Asolo Rep will also have all the resources needed to workshop, rehearse, build, costume, mount, produce, and ship a production to Broadway or anywhere in the country. Broadway Begins Here is the future of the American theatre!

Crystal Society

Crystal Society

Asolo Rep proudly recognizes our Crystal Society members who, over the course of their lifetimes, have made extraordinary gifts or pledges of $1,000,000 or more for the theatre’s Annual Fund, Endowment, and Capital Projects. Our Crystal Luminaries have made gifts of $5,000,000 or more. Honorees are in order of induction date. Gifts are current as of August 1, 2022.

2010 | BEVERLY L. KOSKI A

Since the 1960s, Asolo Rep has been a part of Bev’s and her family’s life in Sarasota. Access to this theatre has opened portals to the imagination and introduced cultural activities that have become lifelong passions. She and Bob would bring their children to performances in the “old” Asolo Theatre when it was housed at the Ringling Museum, and deepened their involvement as the theatre grew. Inspired by Bev’s personal connection to the theatre, she and her family help to make new memories possible for today’s patrons, young and old. The Robert and Beverly Koski Center is a testament to this family’s ongoing support of Asolo Rep and its artistic and educational missions.

2017 | SHARON AND HERMAN FRANKEL A

An Asolo Rep board member since 2006, Herman has been extremely active and generous as co-chairman of the Facilities Committee—negotiating, strategizing, and supporting the decisions to purchase and renovate the Robert and Beverly Koski Center, acquire 13 apartments that comprise the Warren and Margot Coville Guest Artist Housing, and secure the Phillips Club residence in New York City. In 2016, the Frankels’ gift made possible the acquisition of a much-needed adjunct facility, the Herman and Sharon Frankel Asolo Rep Annex. The Frankels share a deep commitment to Asolo Rep and a willingness to provide the passionate and financial support so necessary for the theatre to thrive. As Crystal Society members, Sharon and Herman’s philanthropy shines through many facets of their beloved Asolo Rep!

2017 | LARRY AND DEBBIE HASPEL A in memory of Dori Haspel

Originally from Northbrook, Illinois, Larry and Debbie moved to Sarasota in 2009 upon their retirement—Larry, from more than 40 years of practice as an interventional cardiologist and CEO of a large hospital system, and Debbie, from 20 years as a civil litigation attorney. Since that time, they have been actively involved with many local organizations, both philanthropically and in leadership roles. As supporters of Asolo Rep, they say, “For years, we have enjoyed the theatre. This theatre provides a unique experience where the stimulating conversation that live performances provokes is heightened by our engagement with the actors.” Larry and Debbie joined our Crystal Society in the 2017-18 season with their second endowment gift, made in memory of their daughter Dori.

2018 | EVA T. SLANE A in honor of Stephan Slane

Born in Germany to Austrian parents (her father was an opera singer, her mother, an actor), Eva arrived in America in 1939. As a NYC theatrical agent, Eva nurtured the careers of artists including James Earl Jones. In 1964, she married Stephan Slane, founder of the North Shore Music Theatre, once New England’s largest not-for-profit theatre. Eva follows her lifelong passion for theatre and encouraging youth by serving on the boards of Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe and Asolo Rep. Her support of our partnership with the FSU/ Asolo Conservatory has seen her sponsor over 20 students since 1998! Her generous and caring nature is treasured by everyone she meets. Eva joined the Crystal Society in 2018 by virtue of her annual gifts to Asolo Rep over many seasons, and her planned gift designated for student assistantships.

2019 | CHARLIE HUISKING A

Asolo Rep Board member Charlie Huisking is proud to support Asolo Rep and the FSU/Asolo Conservatory through both the Huisking Foundation and a fund at the Community Foundation of Sarasota County established by his late parents, Charles and Lillian (Pat) Huisking. “My parents loved Sarasota and the Asolo, and they started taking me to performances there in 1963, when I was in grade school,” says Huisking. “This theatre has been an integral part of our family life. I know my parents would be proud to see what it has become under Michael Donald Edwards.” We welcomed Charlie into the Crystal Society in 2019 based on his inclusion of Asolo Rep in his estate plan and a 30-year history of annual contributions.

2019 | DR. RANDELL JOHNSON AND BOBBY JENSEN A

Sarasota’s performing arts scene and sophisticated culture lured Bobby and Randell here to buy their retirement home. They were arts patrons in Atlanta for two decades and have enjoyed their experiences with theatre in Sarasota. “We have found the quality at Asolo Rep to be comparable to performances found anywhere in the U.S.” Since their introduction to the FSU/Asolo Conservatory in 2006 and Asolo Rep in 2009, Bobby and Randell have created events to introduce the LGBTQ community to seasonal performances, and developed programs that encourage subscription support. Having traveled extensively with their work, they enjoy the way Asolo Rep creates for its patrons a cultural immersion through the playwright’s words, the director’s vision, and the actors’ talents without ever leaving our great community. They support the FSU/Asolo Conservatory student program, Artistic Excellence Society, and Education & Engagement, and are Co-Producers for Ken Ludwig's The Three Musketeers.

2019 | RON GREENBAUM, in memoriam, AND RITA GREENBAUM A

Ron Greenbaum started his support of Asolo Rep as an Angel donor in 1986. Three years later he was writing letters to other donors to encourage them to become Co-Producers, a task he carried out for over 30 years as the Chair of the Board’s Development Committee. After joining the Board in 1991, he served on the Executive Committee from 1999 on, and for three terms as Board Chair, from 2001-2003 and 2008-2009. Ron and his wife Rita hosted an annual appreciation party for Asolo Rep’s major contributors for many years. They have supported the theatre’s Education & Engagement programs, events, and championed the work Asolo Rep produces on its stages. In 2019, Asolo Rep welcomed Ron and Rita to the Crystal Society in grateful acknowledgement of their steadfast support over a long period of service to this organization. We miss Ron’s presence at our opening nights, special events, and especially in the board room, where his passion and commitment made such a difference towards the success of Asolo Rep.

2021 | GERI AND RON YONOVER

Geri and Ron Yonover joined the Crystal Society with a gift to the Staging Our Future Capital Campaign. Hailing from Chicago, they are great theatre lovers and have been involved over the years in the Broadway theatre world as producers. Geri and Ron appreciate not only the excellence of the final theatrical production the audience sees on stage, but also the months of preparation that go on before the curtain rises on opening night. Very fittingly, a rehearsal hall at the Robert and Beverly Koski Center will be named in their honor. Thank you, Geri and Ron, for supporting Asolo Rep’s next big stride into the future!

2022 | CAROLE CROSBY A

As a capstone to her two terms as Asolo Rep Board President, Carole Crosby joined the Crystal Society in Spring 2022 with a major gift, directed from the Ruby E. and Carole Crosby Family Foundation, to benefit the Career Development Program. Over the years, her gifts have often shown a keen insight into the theatre’s real needs. For example, Carole funded the installation of the LED Monument sign in front of Asolo Rep’s Herman and Sharon Frankel Annex, and her early gift to the Staging Our Future Campaign was celebrated with the naming of the “Crosby Hall” gathering space in the Annex. In 2014, in response to the Endowment Matching Challenge, Carole attained “Ruby” status to honor her mother and named the annual visiting musical artist chair in her memory. “To honor my mother’s legacy and because of my personal connection to the arts, I now enthusiastically support these causes to the best of my ability.”

Asolo Rep gratefully recognizes those Luminary and Crystal donors who, during their lifetimes, provided for endowment gifts that will forever benefit the theatre. Although they are no longer with us, our admiration and gratitude continue forever.

2015 | WILLIAM A. YANDOW in memoriam A

Bill’s involvement originated in 2008 when he began sponsoring “a special kid from Kuala Lumpur.” He officially sponsored Ghafir Akbar, Kevin Stanfa, Benjamin Boucvalt, Tony Stopperan, Jesse Dornan, Zlatomir Moldovanski, Benjamin Williamson, Jory Murphy, and Josh James, and made eternal friendships with many other Conservatory students. Ever cognizant of the Conservatory and Theatre’s mutually beneficial relationship—and the importance of supporting each— he expanded his giving to include marketing initiatives and a capital gift to help purchase artist housing, and he enthusiastically supported the Angels, Directors’ Society, and Artistic Excellence Society. In December 2019 we dedicated the William A. Yandow Box Office in his honor. A round of applause to you, Bill, for encouraging the Theatre and Conservatory’s artistic advancement and for the generosity and affection you have shown our young theatre artists!

2006 | ESTHER M. MERTZ in memoriam A

Esther M. Mertz was a most loyal and long-standing champion. Her support began in the early 1980s and a contribution in 1989 in memory of her husband made possible the installation of the Dunfermline Opera House, now named The Harold and Esther Mertz Theatre in their honor. In 2003, Mrs. Mertz provided a lead matching gift to the Asolo Theatre Endowment Fund. In 2004, she funded the search for Producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards, and in 2005, she shared in the cost of renovating the theatre’s lobby. Beginning in 1993, she provided the FSU/Asolo Conservatory with endowed gifts that have historically supported up to five students each season and will continue to support students in the years to come. We miss you, Esther, and you will always be The First Lady of Asolo Rep.

2007 | ULLA R. SEARING in memoriam A

Elegant and refined, Mrs. Ulla R. Searing graced Asolo Rep with her presence for more than four decades. A bold supporter of the arts and honored member of the Sarasota community, Mrs. Searing gave generously to our area’s most prized arts organizations. Asolo Rep is deeply grateful for the bequest Mrs. Searing granted the theatre, and, in December 2019, participated in installing a plaque in her honor near the main entrance. Thank you, Mrs. Searing, for all you have done for Asolo Rep and for this community.

2008 | LEE AND BOB PETERSON in memoriam A

Generous patrons of many Sarasota arts and service organizations, the Petersons always said, “Asolo Rep is the joy of our lives.” Their enthusiasm for the groundbreaking work of the theatre under Michael Donald Edwards’ leadership translated into their founding support of the Artistic Excellence Society. A bold matching challenge issued by the Petersons during Michael’s first season led to an overwhelming response from board members, a true vote of confidence for the new Producing Artistic Director. Lee’s vivacious chairmanship of many Asolo Rep events and Bob’s steady hand as Board Chair and Co-Chair of the Capital/Endowment Campaign meant so much to Asolo Rep over 24 seasons. We sadly miss their presence in the board room and on opening nights, but dearly cherish their memories.

2010 | JOAN ARMOUR MENDELL in memoriam A

Joan leveraged her prolific poetic talents to support her beloved Asolo Rep: the proceeds from sales of her two published volumes of poetry were designated to benefit the theatre. A true aficionada of all the arts, Joan was a faithful and ardent member of nearly every opening night house, as well as an enthusiastic member of the Asolo Rep Adventures travel club. Her capital gift to name Asolo Rep’s Joan Armour Mendell Scenic Studio was grandly celebrated in February 2012. Walt Whitman said, “To have great poets there must be great audiences,” and in Joan, we were fortunate to have both.

2011 | MARGOT AND WARREN COVILLE in memoriam A

When Margot and Warren moved to Sarasota in 1994, Artistic Director Howard Millman introduced them to Asolo Rep. The Covilles learned that the productions here rival anything they had ever seen on Broadway or the West End. Margot and Warren were passionate and generous supporters of the theatre’s partnership with the FSU/Asolo Conservatory since 2004, and inspirational philanthropic leaders for Asolo Rep and many other organizations. Past president of the Asolo Rep board, Warren also served as the Chair of the Capital/Endowment Campaign for seven years, providing valuable leadership at its launch, guiding and growing the new endowment, and completing several key capital initiatives. Finding Sarasota a worldclass city, the Covilles worked for over 25 years to improve its visibility and viability as a nexus for the arts. We are most grateful for their last gift, a $1.5 million matching challenge for the Staging Our Future Campaign.

2013 | ANONYMOUS in memoriam A

A very generous member of our community chose to make this gift anonymously. Although we cannot display a photograph, we would like to paint a picture in your mind’s eye.

As a patron who enjoyed Asolo Rep performances for many years, this member of the Crystal Society made the first gift to qualify for the Endowment Matching Challenge in 2013 with a grand generous gesture in support of the Producing Artistic Director’s position. Many thanks for your unstinting kindness that will sustain Asolo Rep for generations to come!

2013 | STANLEY KANE in memoriam A IN HONOR OF JANET KANE

A three-time board president, Stanley’s vision and ardor helped the theatre survive and flourish through many challenges. In 1996, he brought his business know-how and strong community ties to bear to put Asolo Rep back on a path of fiscal health and established a cash reserve campaign to ensure financial stability into the future. Working with Florida State University and Sarasota Ballet, he helped turn the FSU Center for the Performing Arts into a vibrant, bursting-at-the-seams hub of creativity and excellence. In 2006, Stanley was instrumental in elevating the theatre’s Heritage Society—honoring donors whose estate plans include a testamentary gift to Asolo Rep—and increasing awareness of the need to provide for the organization’s future through deferred gifts. Stanley’s passing in 2020 at the age of 100 marked the culmination of a life spent in selfless service, and he will be deeply missed by the entire community.

2013 | MAURICE RICHARDS AND JACK KESLER in memoriam A

Maurie and Jack’s immersive involvement in the theatre’s partnership with the FSU/Asolo Conservatory opened many new opportunities for them in their retirement. Recognizing the interdependence of the Theatre and the Conservatory, they sculpted their estate plan to support not only student assistantships but also Conservatory needs and Asolo Rep programming. This year, they generously donated their original Crystal sculpture back to the theatre to be displayed in the new lobby at the Koski Center. They wish to honor and thank all Crystal Society members with this public display. Maurie and Jack’s philanthropy beautifully embodies the many sparkling facets of a Crystal!

2016 | CHUCK AND MARGIE BARANCIK in memoriam A

Chuck and Margie were strong supporters of Asolo Rep and its mission to bring the highest level of adult and family theatre to our community, while also engaging our local schools and students. Chuck served on the Asolo Rep board for eight years, and he and Margie enjoyed being part of an everincreasing degree of professionalism in all the theatre’s endeavors. Although we tragically lost this wonderful couple in December 2019, we will always remember and cherish their kind and warm presence and continue to appreciate the many ways they supported Asolo Rep, and this community, during their lifetimes.

2018 | VIRGINIA B. TOULMIN in memoriam A

A keen businesswoman with a generous heart, Virginia was amongst our greatest friends and benefactors throughout her life in Sarasota. Upon graduating from Washington University, Virginia became a stewardess nurse on the B&O railroad. There she met her husbandto-be, patent attorney Harry Toulmin, Jr. Harry encouraged Virginia to apply her medical knowledge and Midwest common sense to his business ventures, including Central Pharmaceuticals. Virginia steered the company to tremendous growth, sowing the seeds of her philanthropic legacy. She helped many Sarasota cultural organizations become what they are today. In her 2006 Hall of Fame video, CVA remarked, “her unselfish spirit, gentle wisdom, and quiet generosity serve as an example for others to emulate.” We were grateful to induct Virginia into our Crystal Society posthumously, celebrating her as a forever member of the Asolo Rep family.

BEVERLY KOSKI/KOSKI FAMILY FOUNDATION A

In addition to her steadfast support as a Co-Producer and Conservatory Student Patron, Beverly Koski and her family have made a special gift this season through the Koski Family Foundation. Their generous grant will catalyze our efforts to welcome new audience members to the theatre by supporting Education & Engagement programs including Community Days, the IllumiNation series, and other initiatives. “All members of our community should have the opportunity to experience the arts in powerful ways,” says Beverly. “Asolo Rep’s productions are not only exceptional in quality – the stories played out on stage help us feel what it’s like to walk in another’s shoes. We want to open this world to children, families, and adults who might not otherwise have this unique experience with live theatre.”

AND CAROLE CROSBY FAMILY FOUNDATION A

Asolo Rep has been a part of Carole’s life since she met fellow Detroiter Warren Coville. Principal harpist with the Detroit Symphony while simultaneously pursuing her law degree, she later became a partner at a major Detroit law firm. But, as Carole describes, “Loving the life and culture in Sarasota, my husband Larry Wickless and I decided to relocate here full time.” Lending her knowledge and experience, Carole has just completed two terms as Asolo Rep’s Board President and currently chairs the Nominating and Governance Committee. Asolo Rep is truly fortunate to have Carole and Larry’s support across the organization.

BETTY-JEAN AND DAVID* BAVAR A

Betty-Jean and David Bavar have been proud supporters of Asolo Rep for over 20 seasons. They share a love of theatre and were drawn to Sarasota from Baltimore for its rich cultural scene—renowned orchestra, theatre, and ballet companies. “Being on the Asolo Rep Board has been a rewarding and exciting experience! It’s a special community of which I’m thrilled to be a part,” says David. The theatre is a lifelong love for the Bavars and they’re dedicated to ensuring the next generation is afforded this wonderful experience. “Both David and I went to the theatre as children and continued the tradition with our family. We believe the theatre is a magical experience for children and adults, opening doors to extraordinary places and worlds,” says Betty-Jean.

DESIGNING WOMEN BOUTIQUE A

Celebrating 20 years of philanthropy, Designing Women Boutique opened their doors in 2002 as a non-profit consignment shop geared towards supporting the Sarasota arts and human services community. Today they are a premier shopping destination featuring high-end fashion, jewelry, fine art, home goods, and concierge estate liquidation and downsizing services. Through the success of sponsorships, partnerships, and high-volume sales, GroundWorks/ DWB has given more than $8 million to over 100 regional arts and human services organizations. DWB has been a partner to Asolo Rep since its inception and has granted over $750,000 to the theatre’s Endowment, for which DWB is gratefully recognized as a Diamond Society member.

ANDREW AND JUDITH ECONOMOS

Andrew and Judith Economos are pleased to be helping Asolo Rep. In his youth, Andrew was an actor in a theatre tour group in Florida and remembers well what theatre can do. Both graduated from the University of Florida and went on to Los Angeles, working in aerospace computing. Both earned PhDs from UCLA. Returning to the East Coast, Andrew worked at Sarnoff Labs and Judith taught philosophy at Princeton University. They moved to New York, where Andrew was a vice president at NBC for 14 years. They supported theatre in the City and Westchester. Leaving NBC, Andrew started a company making pioneering software for broadcasters worldwide. Now retired in Florida, they have discovered theatre in Sarasota, where Andrew has served on the boards of Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, Ringling Museum, Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, Faulhaber Science Center, and Asolo Rep.

THE EXCHANGE

The Exchange, a not-for-profit consignment store like no other, is a favorite haunt for Sarasotans, and a “must visit” destination for visitors from around the world. The Exchange’s 15,000 sq. ft. showroom is filled with affordably priced treasures and amazing finds, such as Baccarat crystal, Tiffany silver, Gucci handbags, fine jewelry, men’s and women’s designer clothing, handmade oriental rugs, household items, and furniture. Lara Spencer of HGTV’s Flea Market Flip, ABC’s Good Morning America, and PBS’s Antiques Roadshow includes The Exchange amongst her favorite shops. Dedicated to supporting Sarasota and Manatee Counties’ arts communities, The Exchange has awarded over $9 million in grants and scholarships since 1962. Today and every day, we invite you to come see how “Together We Can Make a Difference.”

CHARLIE HUISKING A, HUISKING FOUNDATION

Charlie carries on a family tradition by supporting students in the FSU/ Asolo Conservatory: “My mother was a Conservatory donor for nine years, and the experience enriched the last part of her life. I've been a donor now for 14 years and find the experience just as rewarding.” Charlie’s contributions benefit several giving areas; however, it may be that his work in the community on Asolo Rep’s behalf is the most valuable. As chair of the Government Relations Committee, Charlie connects officeholders and candidates with the theatre’s work and demonstrates its positive economic impact on the region. His commitment to arts education is expressed by his work as vice-chair of the Education Committee. In addition, as part of the IllumiNation advisory team, Charlie helps us reach out into our community with programs that link theatre with pertinent issues and make theatre relevant to our 21st century.

GERI AND RON YONOVER A

Ever since Ron and Geri Yonover arrived in the Sarasota area, they have been big fans of Asolo Rep. And as the years went by, they noticed a gradual but profound improvement in the quality of the performances; not only in the acting, but also in virtually every other aspect of theatre production. Many times in the last few years they have made more than favorable comparisons to Broadway productions. Geri is delighted to begin her seventh year of service on the Board of Directors, and together, the Yonovers are thrilled and honored to play a small role in helping Asolo Rep achieve excellence in the theatre.

BOB AND BEVERLY BARTNER A

Bob and Beverly Bartner have been dedicated to the arts and the importance of them for more than 30 years. They have served on the Boards of The NY Metropolitan Opera, NY Philharmonic, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and Asolo Rep. Along with their longtime partners, Norman and the late Alice Tulchin, they have produced scores of award-winning plays on Broadway and in London. Beverly and Bob are proud to be associated with Asolo Rep and its team, led by Michael Donald Edwards, who have raised the awareness of the beauty of the spoken word by presenting first-rate works, executed by dedicated and talented actors, which make Sarasota a better place in which to live.

SUSAN AND JIM BUCKA

As long-time major supporters of Asolo Rep, Susan and Jim are a dynamic duo that makes Asolo Rep unique. Since 1999, Susan has been a Board member lending her expertise across the organization, serving as President from 2009-2011. She has co-chaired two Galas, and led Asolo Rep Adventures trips to London, San Diego, the Stratford and Shaw Festivals, and New York. Currently, she is a member of the Executive, Nominating & Governance, Development, and Stewardship Committees. The Bucks are pleased to support Asolo Rep as Presenters this season. Although they both lead very active lives traveling, flying, boating, and volunteering, Susan and Jim always go above and beyond the call to support and promote Asolo Rep. We are truly better off because of this amazing pair.

DON AND JO ANN BURHARTA

Hailing from Kansas, Don and Jo Ann Burhart have always enjoyed an adventurous social life. When they discovered Asolo Rep in Sarasota, the experience of live theatre with friends familiar and new became an enriching part of their lives. “Asolo Rep has become so meaningful for us, beyond pure entertainment. To understand everything that goes into bringing a production to the stage – to meet each director, cast and creative team member, and hear their insights – accentuates how we experience the plays and musicals as audience members,” say Jo Ann and Don. In addition to supporting Asolo Rep as Presenters, Don and Jo Ann make our events and trips more festive, fashionable, and successful. “Asolo Rep has truly become part of our family,” says Jo Ann, and we are grateful for it!

ANN AND TOM CHARTERS A

Ann and Tom Charters, proud supporters of Asolo Rep, are enthusiastically waiting for the season to begin. They watched Asolo Rep mature and improve during visits from their international postings for many years. Since moving to Sarasota in 2010, they have enjoyed Asolo Rep’s Broadway quality productions and the many opportunities to learn more about the artistry, design, and business of musicals and plays. In their opinion, nothing is humdrum about Asolo Rep. Its patrons and staff embrace all who walk through the doors looking for rich, wonderful, thought-provoking entertainment. Sarasota is the culture magnet of Florida and the southeastern United States because of the Arts and especially because of Asolo Repertory Theatre.

HENNY AND DENNIS DIRKS A

Henny and Dennis Dirks have been strong supporters of Asolo Rep and are very appreciative of its artistic excellence. They are season subscribers and since Dennis was involved in theatre both in high school and college, they are both pleased and excited to help support students studying theatre at the Conservatory. Dennis is an Asolo Rep Board member and currently serves as the Treasurer.

SHARON AND HERMAN FRANKEL A

Ardent advocates of the theatre’s work, Sharon and Herman have been in countless opening night audiences applauding the performance. Their gifts to the Artistic Excellence Society over the past 10 years have enhanced the theatre’s capacity to introduce world premiere works such as Hood, Noah Racey’s Pulse, Hero: The Musical, Luck Be a Lady, Josephine, and Beatsville. This year, the Frankels will rejoin our Presenters group as champions of the season! By supporting areas across the organization, Sharon and Herman demonstrate their fervent belief in Asolo Rep’s value to our community and ensure that the theatre will continue to strengthen and flourish.

LARRY AND DEBBIE HASPEL A

Larry and Debbie’s support for so many aspects of our operations and programs is matched only by their able and passionate leadership. Larry, a member of Asolo Rep’s Board of Directors, is the chair of our Endowment Committee and served as Board chair from 2016 to 2018. Larry and Debbie have been Season Presenters for many years, have provided funds for matching challenges to support the annual campaigns, and served as co-chairs of the Staging Our Future Capital Campaign from 2018 to 2020. “The new facilities at the Koski Center campus take Asolo Rep to the next level among regional theatres. We are proud to have played a role in making that vision a reality.”

CAROLYN KEYSTONE AND JIM MEEKISON A

Carolyn and Jim experienced their first Asolo Rep production in late 2005, shortly after they moved to the Sarasota community. As long-time supporters of the arts and other not-for-profit organizations in Canada, they were so impressed with the quality of the performance and with the theatre, that they became season subscribers. They have since seen nearly every production, become key financial supporters of the theatre, and co-chaired the 2012 Annual Gala, Ragtime Revival, the most successful event of the season. Carolyn is beginning her 13th season as a member of the Asolo Rep Board. For the past 17 years, we have been extremely blessed by their strong passion for theatre and their dedication to Asolo Rep. We are so grateful to have their support!

IVAN AND MARILYN KUSHEN A

Upon first arriving in the early 1970s, Marilyn and Ivan Kushen were thrilled to discover the evolving art scene in Sarasota. Having been exposed to the excitement of Broadway theatre at a young age, and participating as patrons for decades in Chicago, the Kushens’ support for Asolo Rep became a natural extension of their passion. They strongly believe that theatre has always been a reflection of society in a venue that should be supported and shared. It has been their pleasure to be CoProducers, and to support the Artistic Excellence Society and Education & Engagement. They are thrilled to be Presenters of this incredible organization that has survived a difficult few years and has never failed to bring outstanding performances to our world.

MAURICE RICHARDS* AND JACK KESLER* A

What started as one student sponsorship 11 years ago has blossomed into generous support of numerous Asolo Rep programs each season. Although Maurie and Jack are no longer with us on earth, their annual giving plan co-produces two shows this year, honors the work of David Covach in the Costume Shop with an annual gift to the Angels, empowers Michael Donald Edwards to dream bigger by supporting the Artistic Excellence Society, and makes sure our productions are accessible to all audiences by subsidizing tickets for young people to participate in our IllumiNation programming. We are so grateful for them both!

PATRICIA WHITE, HOLMES FAMILY FUND

The Samowitz Family has supported Asolo Rep for 20 seasons, the last several years at the Presenter level. Asolo Rep is so grateful to have them as loyal champions of our work.

The Swans were inspired to get involved with Asolo Rep 10 years ago, after Jan experienced a luncheon presentation by directors Michael Donald Edwards and Frank Galati describing The American Character Project and its five-year arc of productions. Now season presenters for the fifth year, Skip and Jan share a strong belief in the good work being produced by Asolo Rep and the great value it adds to the Sarasota cultural scene. As former residents of the Chicago and Baltimore areas, and as international travelers, Jan and Skip’s lives have always been enriched by enjoying and supporting the arts. They are delighted to attest to the worldclass excellence of Asolo Rep’s productions and the capability of its leadership. in memoriam

Patricia Holmes White's involvement with Asolo Rep began with her parents Betty and Dick Holmes. "It’s been my privilege and honor to continue and grow their support of Asolo Rep,” says Pat. The work of the theatre holds a special place in Pat’s heart, and she especially admires the theatre’s support and vision for a vibrant community that affords access to the arts to everyone. She wholeheartedly feels that Asolo Rep’s incredible programming has made Sarasota a better place to call home.

Q: I want to make a gift to Asolo Rep, but I’m not ready to make an outright contribution today. Can you tell me more about planned gifts?

How to give.

A: Great question! Did you know that Asolo Rep includes planned gifts in the Lifetime Giving lists on these pages and in other recognition signage? There are many ways to make a planned gift. The most common method for making a future contribution is to designate Asolo Theatre, Inc. as a beneficiary in your will. If your estate plan is complete, you can request that your attorney add a simple codicil naming Asolo Theatre, Inc. as a beneficiary of a specific bequest amount, a percentage of your estate, or a combination of both. You can also designate the theatre as a recipient of a pension plan, IRA, or life insurance.

Conservatory Partnership

Conservatory Partnership

SUPPORTING THE FUTURE OF THE AMERICAN THEATRE.

For nearly 50 years, Asolo Rep and the FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training have been linked in a unique collaboration that marries a classical academic training program with a professional regional theatre company. The third ingredient in the mix is the enthusiastic community engagement that enlivens and animates the program. If you would like to make a difference in an emerging actor’s life, contact Angel Hissom at angel_hissom@asolo.org

Patrons of the Conservatory

Asolo Rep supports each FSU/Asolo Conservatory student through a $ 12,000 assistantship package that furnishes an annual stipend and funds the London Study program in the second year of training. Your Patron gift will provide valuable support for this outstanding training program, while engaging you in the development of young artists.

COMMITMENT TO ANTI-RACISM, INCLUSION, DIVERSITY, EQUITY, & ACCESS

Asolo Rep is committed to becoming a more inclusive, diverse, and anti-racist institution at all levels. In order to intentionally address injustice and racism we believe theatre must become a leading force in telling the stories of our time to inform and influence a better future. We will reflect upon our past, investigate our current course of action, and develop a responsive and sustainable plan to break down barriers to access and challenge racism and bias within our institution and our community.

Our commitment to Anti-Racism and Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) requires that we continue to actively listen, seek learning opportunities, create space for direct and open discourse and strive to meet people where they are— taking time to effect lasting change together.

For more information on Asolo Rep’s IDEA commitment, visit asolorep.org/idea.

LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Asolo Rep acknowledges that we join together in the practice of theatre on the native lands of The Calusa People.

As a step toward honoring the truth and achieving healing and reconciliation with those Indigenous peoples, we honor with gratitude the land itself and the Calusa Tribe. This acknowledgement does not take the place of authentic relationships with indigenous communities but serves as a first step in honoring the legacy of the land.
