Thank you for our 62nd season.

What can I say that will express the depth of our gratitude for your unflagging support through these perilous days? I feel as if I’m sending you a dispatch from the distant front of a conflict. I cannot help but think of Winston Churchill’s remarks to the Royal Academy, reflecting on the critical role of art in shaping who we are: “Ill fares the race which fails to salute the arts with the reverence and delight which are their due.” You have shown that reverence with your support and it is our hope that the work we have brought you this season has inspired that delight. This year, so much of what we take for granted has been proven vulnerable. But what has also been proven is that we are each other’s greatest strength. You have recognized the power of theatre to bring people together, even over a distance, and you have come together to say we are a community that deeply values empathy, that cherishes artistry, and that celebrates humanity. The work we made this year was produced under the most stringent guidelines to ensure artist, audience, and staff safety. For institutions without similarly robust support, these measures presented a nonstarter. But as you have always done, you have challenged and equipped us to use this as a time for innovation. You have encouraged our creativity and reinvigorated this institution. With your help, I am confident that when we look back at this period of incredible apprehension and instability, we will be proud of the work we’ve made this season. With minds full of admiration and hearts full of love, we push ahead. Yours,

Michael D. Edwards Producing Artistic Director

EX OFFICIO MEMBERS Patricia Anderson, President, Asolo Repertory Theatre Guild John Thrasher, President, Florida State University James Frazier, Dean, College of Fine Arts, Florida State University

in memoriam

On behalf of the Asolo Repertory Theatre Board of Trustees, welcome to the celebration of the conclusion of the 62nd season of triumphant theater at Asolo Rep. There hasn’t been anything typical about this, my first year as your board president; but then, there is nothing typical about the community or the work of our theater. We may have temporarily closed our doors beginning in March, 2020, but we have been anything but idle since then. We have produced over 30 weeks of Monday Musical Moments, taking a fresh look at the work of our past. We created a series of new musical presentations as part of our “Ground Floor: Making Musicals Series.” We have maintained and even increased community access to the artists on our stage through our podcast: “Engage on Air.” And, in spite of the uncharted waters we found ourselves swimming in, we have created online learning opportunities that have reached young artists and adults alike through classes and the digital adaptation of our Shakespeare tour, BardWired: A Midsummer Night’s Dream. And we didn’t stop there. We opened a new avenue of performance that is simultaneously unprecedented as well as deeply connected to the earliest days of Asolo Rep. Recalling the very first Florida State University sponsored performance on the steps of The Ringling

Museum, we returned to a tradition of outdoor performance on the newly constructed Terrace Stage. This stage, perfectly placed on the steps of our artistic home, promises to provide yet another tool to tell great stories at Asolo Rep. Just one example of what can result when a strong community of supporters comes together to declare that art and theatre are essential to who we are in Sarasota and Manatee counties. This year, we embraced calls from our community to go deeper in our commitment to equity, diversity, access, and inclusion. This call has invigorated our thinking, had meaningful impact on all aspects of our institution, and most importantly, will inform us on an on-going basis. We have broken ground on the expansion of the Robert and Beverly Koski Center so that the future of Asolo Rep grows ever brighter, attracting the best theatre artists the nation has to offer to our Sarasota gem. This expansion will also provide much needed space for our community to get together after so long to learn and laugh once more. The future continues to morph and evolve; but the constant through it all has been your support fueling the creative innovation at Asolo Rep. And for that, I want to congratulate you for your dedication, your foresight, and your perseverance. I am honored to be serving as your board president through these momentous days.

2 0 2 0 -2 0 21 A S O L O R E P S E A S O N The Journey that has been our 2020-2021 season began quite unexpectedly in the middle of our 2019-2020 season. With two shows running, one headed into previews, and another in rehearsal, the task suddenly switched from storytelling to safety and ensuring the health of our entire company. A task which persists as a top priority to this day. When we were certain we had done everything in our power to assist company members through this difficult time, including extended housing opportunities for stranded artists, and assistance in navigating the unemployment system for those employees that had to be furloughed or let go, we began to ask ourselves, ‘what will theater look like during this pandemic?’ The mandate to connect our community with stories and conversation was now both more important than ever and far more difficult.

“Bundled up as we were that Winter night, we each held that flame in our hearts and we sang silently to one another a healing vow to never let the light go out.” ‑Frank Galati 4

“It was a beautiful production and I’m so glad we got our 'sea legs' at the Asolo.” – Cheryl L. West, playwright

SO WE MOVED ONLINE. A space that had been primarily functional for us to that point had to become the primary expressive vehicle of our institution. Our staff, experts in creating amazing work on stage, took on the entirely new task of pulling theater through the screen. The energy, skill, and creativity with which they leapt into these uncharted waters will be a source of pride and further inspiration for seasons to come. WE COMBED THROUGH OUR ARCHIVES to launch “Monday Musical Moments” – a celebration of past work, remastered and re-contextualized with interviews for today. We got in touch with artists and community leaders to create fascinating interviews about theater and life for our podcast and radio show "Engage on Air." We launched educational content like “Nia Explains it All” to make sure students shut out of theater classrooms could hear from us directly and keep the creative spark burning brightly. Our “Ground Floor” series went online with a Making Musicals competition showcasing 15 minute selections from four very different in-progress musicals from across the country and even around the globe. We entered countless classrooms through the BardWired virtual tour of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and created a weekly newsletter – now with over 60 editions – to tell you all about it. Our digital presence in general, across platforms, has grown exponentially since March of 2020 and in the game of ‘find the silver lining’ that this year has been, that community connection has become a tool that we will carry with us moving forward.

“At last one can see and hear what CAMELOT is about and why it was JFK’s favorite musical.” –Frank Galati, Tony Award® Winning Director

IN JUNE, OUR COUNTRY WAS ROCKED by yet more glaring instances of racial injustice and brutality. Through the lens of the Call to Action letter issued to the FSU/Asolo Conservatory as well as Asolo Rep, we engaged in an honest and thorough examination of who we are, who we have been, and who we want to be. We consulted with outside experts, sent our staff to industryspecific conferences, spoke with artists who knew us, read everything we could and most importantly did as much listening as possible. That learning has thus far led to revamping the donor and graduate student relationship in a manner that ensures the program provides mutual benefit with open communication in a safe and supportive space, a deepening of our public commitment to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access, and the launch of a staff committee and board initiative to ensure that the work does not stop here but is ingrained in the core of who we are. A NEW IDEA BEGAN TO GROW despite, or perhaps because of, the changing seasons. With strict health protocols in place, could we possibly perform outside? This initial question gave rise to a lengthy list of others. What would the protocols need to be? Where could we find a venue? With a reduced staff and tight finances, how would we afford to make work? Would people come? We were all surprised and thrilled to find the answers to each of these questions within our midst. Our staff collaborated with all of the artistic unions, and listened intently to the Centers for Disease Control and some of the brightest local health experts in Sarasota to come up with

a rigorous and detailed plan to keep us all safe. Our production teams, as they always do, figured out the perfect way to bring the design to life: a stage, lighting rig, and powerful projectors. And they would do it right on our own doorstep. And finally the board and our supporters, with clarity and visionary leadership, stepped up to provide the resources. What first seemed like an impossible task slowly but surely became the reality of the Terrace Stage. WITH NEW POSSIBILITIES for performance the immediate task was to identify what to put on stage – nothing we had planned for the original 2020-2021 season would be possible. We knew we wanted the show to feel like a gift for the community, something to lift our spirits and inject a little hope in our world. And we knew we had to do it with incredible attention to safety and sanitization. These two strands combined to form We Need a Little Christmas, starring some of the amazing talent we have right in our own backyard. As the show closed we had the answer to our final question: there was definitely an audience excited to see live theater again.

Ana Isabelle & Friends

“I cannot express enough how lucky we are that life gave us lemons and the Asolo has produced lemonade champagne with this stage. It’s been such a long time since I’ve seen people rise to their feet after a performance.” – Bradenton Times, Debra Ratzlaff WITH A REINVIGORATED MANDATE, we set about to create a new season of theatrical events that would give us all something to be proud of. Continuing the ‘keeping it in the family’ mentality that had led us to the creation of We Need a Little Christmas, we reached out to four phenomenal theatre artists, each of whom was ecstatic at the idea of performing once more and all the more so to return to Asolo Rep. We started with the star of our ground breaking production of Bonnie & Clyde, Laura Osnes, who gave us two incredibly elegant and joy-filled nights. From there we began work on a project that could not have been more timely. The incomparable E. Faye Butler introduced us to playwright Cheryl L. West and her poignant play about civil rights stalwart, Fannie Lou Hamer. With E. Faye at the center of this onewoman show, glorious music woven throughout, and a powerful message that equality and justice are the soul of patriotism, Fannie put in sharp relief what is worth fighting for and the urgency with which we must fight. IT WAS TONY-AWARD WINNING composer Steve Orich who brought us our next project, Lerner and Loewe’s Camelot (never mind that the conversation began years ago!). The time was finally right to summon this legend of a lost utopia and enduring love with a lean and vibrant adaptation from David Lee, including new orchestrations from Steve. In a brilliant staging from our own Celine Rosenthal and a diverse cast that added fresh immediacy to the piece, the show had an extended, sold out run. With permission from the Lerner and Loewe estate we were able to stream, for the first time, a fully produced video capture of the show.

IN CONCERT

WE CANNOT THINK OF A BETTER EXCLAMATION POINT on the end of what turned into an action-packed season than bringing back the star of our 2017 production of Evita, Ana Isabelle. Led by Josh Rhodes, the show was a true homecoming for the entire team including Justin Gregory Lopez and world-renowned dancers Junior Cervila and Guadalupe Garcia. At the center of all the fun, the dazzling spectacle and sensational music is a heartbeat of hope. WE ARE ONE of very few theaters across the country who can say we’ve safely produced five shows for a total of 56 performances playing to a total of 11,833 patrons throughout this year. We have earned the right to celebrate.

WHAT FOLLOWS in this book are the names of the incredible people who enabled us to do all the work you’ve just read about. People and supporters, without whom, not a single bit of this work would’ve been possible. These people have believed in us, encouraged us from the moment we had to pivot and step into the unknown. That faith has resulted in brilliant work despite unprecedented barriers, new play commissions, a sparkling Gala event, and breaking ground on an expanded Koski Center that will keep Asolo Rep at the center of the national theater conversation and an indispensable part of Sarasota’s cultural life for years to come.

With deepest gratitude,In brightest celebration, Linda, Michael, and the staff at Asolo Rep

ASOLO REP LE ADERSHIP

MICHAEL DONALD EDWARDS

LINDA M. DiGABRIELE

Personal and powerful memories of the pandemic are so intertwined with having to shut down the theatre. I remember the looks on everyone’s faces as they realized what was happening. I remember Frank Galati bursting into tears. I remember the dismay on the faces of the staff who realized layoffs were coming. I remember our incredible board of directors encouraging us to push ahead. And I remember Linda and I looking at each other and recognizing we were jumping off a cliff together. However, the demands of helping, along with Linda, to steer the ship of Asolo Rep has also been a kind of personal gift.

It’s December 18 and my husband and I are driving to the theatre for the opening of We Need A Little Christmas, the first show on the Terrace Stage. I’m anxiously looking at the outside thermometer – 55 degrees and falling! I worry people won’t come, or if they come, they’ll get too cold and leave. The actors will have to perform under such challenging conditions.

Producing Artistic Director

Even more personal was the passing of American Theater Icon, Terrence McNally. He was the first friend that Covid took. I cannot help but think of the thousands of people who have experienced greater catastrophic loss. We’ve spent so much time thinking about the institutional and cultural crisis the pandemic represents, it’s hard to comprehend the profound personal loss. Even with all the challenges and anxiety, finally I must say: we have been so fortunate. We have been so busy, so deeply supported and we have been able to make real discoveries about the inner resources we, as a company and as individuals, did not realize we had. Those inner resources have been put to the test. At the final rehearsal of We Need a Little Christmas, I vividly remember Mike Rodgers presenting us all with t-shirts emblazoned with the word “Pivot.” Many of us dissolved in tears as we realized that captured everything about what we had achieved as well as what was facing us. The way we look at what we are doing and how we are doing it has profoundly shifted because of our experience of the pandemic and the struggle for justice that has swept our country. Hair is a clarion call to let the sun shine in. It seems even more urgent to make an Our Town that captures and embodies who we are now. It has been a joy to deeply connect with the intelligence, the insight, and the profound philosophical thinking of Thornton Wilder. His play is a challenge to honor the fragility of what it means to be human; to value what is most important: friendship and love and connection to the natural world.

Managing Director

Getting to this moment has been an incredible journey. Could we really build a brand new theatre and create a safe environment for everyone? How could the actors perform together, where would they rehearse, get into costume? What about the four unions’ rules and regulations? How many seats could we safely place and how many could we really fill? There was a real financial risk, building the structure and renting huge, rock and roll style sound and lighting equipment. We were operating with half our normal staff, having sadly needed to furlough and lay off so many. Could our reduced team pull this off? We arrive and watch the seats fill up. It’s a great crowd and the Asolo Rep team is almost giddy with anticipation. We are performing! And it’s beautiful and heartwarming and fun. The actors’ delight in having a real audience is palpable. As the projections dance across the full front of the building and the actors’ voices soar into the night, the applause and cheers of the audience are wonderfully robust, despite being muffled by gloves and face masks. Nobody leaves. I feel immense gratitude: to our stalwart board of directors, who supported every choice; to our incredibly generous donors, who quickly stepped forward to provide support; and a staff and creative team that have been unafraid to take on every challenge. They rapidly learned new skills, plumbing the depths of their amazing talents, and reimagined how we produce theatre for our community, both live on stage and with online engagement. And most of all, I’m grateful to Michael Donald Edwards, who has the vision and deep resolve to take the harder, but important and necessary, road. I have been proud to work with Michael and all these courageous individuals, and feel deeply the care and dedication from everyone involved. Sustained by this commitment and creative energy, we move confidently forward, knowing together we are ready to take on whatever the next challenge may bring.

President Florida State University Florida State University joins with Asolo Repertory Theatre in thanking the Sarasota community for the tremendous show of support in what has been a most extraordinary year. The partnership between the university and Asolo Repertory Theatre remains strong. Over the fall and spring semesters, we provided a safe environment for the 36 graduate students in residence at Asolo Rep so they could continue training for their professional lives. The video version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream was a stunning example of how we have been able to work together to provide content for Florida’s students, even when touring has been impossible. This spring, the Class of 2021 was in Tallahassee working side by side with students from the College of Motion Picture Arts, gaining valuable experience in film. Asolo Repertory Theatre is a beacon for theatrical excellence. Florida State University is proud of its ongoing partnership to prepare students for the stage through the FSU/Asolo Conservatory. As one of the Top 20 public universities in the nation, FSU enjoys having a relationship with an arts institution as fine as the Asolo Rep, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration. Thank you for supporting the arts and education and for helping to ensure that we will all be back, stronger than ever, someday soon.

JAMES FRAZIER, EdD, MFA Dean, College of Fine Arts Florida State University With gratitude, I contemplate where we were a year ago and where we are today. So much has happened, but through the challenges and struggles, Asolo Repertory Theatre and Florida State University have made great strides forward and have emerged stronger in our partnership and demonstrated commitment to engaging in thoughtful ways with Conservatory students and our dedicated sponsorsw, to be the best that we can be. As we continue our trajectory onward and upward, thank you.

GREG LEAMING

Director, FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training More than 60 years ago, Florida State University sent its theatre faculty to Sarasota to start a summer theatre, and shortly afterwards the students in the graduate acting program joined the young company to gain experience in a practical setting. Since that time, one of the most unique and respected training programs in the country has blossomed. While Asolo Rep eventually separated and became its own institution, no longer officially part of FSU, the graduate program remained a part of FSU, operating in Sarasota alongside a growing professional theatre. As a result, the FSU/Asolo Conservatory now works hand in hand with one of the most important and valuable regional theatres in the country, Asolo Rep. Because of this relationship, we are able to offer students not only the highest caliber of classroom training but also a professional work experience as part of that training. The partnership between Asolo Rep and FSU/Asolo Conservatory remains vibrant today, allowing us to train artists as they look forward to taking part in the future of the American Theatre.

BEVERLY L. KOSKI A Since the 1960s, Asolo Rep has been a part of Bev’s and her family’s life in Sarasota. Access to this theatre has opened portals to the imagination and introduced cultural activities that have become lifelong passions. She and Bob would bring their children to performances in the “old” Asolo Theatre when it was housed at the Ringling Museum, and deepened their involvement as the theatre grew. Inspired by Bev’s personal connection to the theatre, she and her family help to make new memories possible for today’s patrons, young and old. The Robert and Beverly Koski Production Center is a testament to this family’s ongoing support of Asolo Rep and its artistic and educational missions.

WILLIAM A. YANDOW in memoriam A

Bill’s involvement originated in 2008 when he began sponsoring “a special kid from Kuala Lumpur.” He officially sponsored Ghafir Akbar, Kevin Stanfa, Benjamin Boucvalt, Tony Stopperan, Jesse Dornan, Zlatomir Moldovanski, Benjamin Williamson, Jory Murphy, and Josh James, and made eternal friendships with many other Conservatory students. Ever cognizant of the Conservatory and Theatre’s mutually beneficial relationship—and the importance of supporting each— he expanded his giving to include marketing initiatives and a capital gift to help purchase artist housing, and he enthusiastically supported the Angels, Directors’ Society, and Artistic Excellence Society. In December 2019 we dedicated the William A. Yandow Box Office in his honor. A round of applause to you, Bill, for encouraging the Theatre and Conservatory’s artistic advancement and for the generosity and affection you have shown our young theatre artists!

ESTHER M. MERTZ

ULLA R. SEARING

LEE AND BOB PETERSON

in memoriam A

in memoriam A

in memoriam A

Esther M. Mertz was a most loyal and long-standing champion. Her support began in the early 1980s and a contribution in 1989 in memory of her husband made possible the installation of the Dunfermline Opera house, now named The Harold and Esther Mertz Theatre in their honor. In 2003, Mrs. Mertz provided a lead matching gift to the Asolo Theatre Endowment Fund. In 2004, she funded the search for Producing Artistic Director, Michael Donald Edwards, and in 2005, she shared in the cost of renovating the theatre’s lobby. Beginning in 1993, she provided the FSU/Asolo Conservatory with endowed gifts that have historically supported up to five students each season and will continue to support students in the years to come. We miss you, Esther, and you will always be The First Lady of Asolo Rep.

Elegant and refined, Mrs. Ulla R. Searing graced Asolo Rep with her presence for more than four decades. A bold supporter of the arts and honored member of the Sarasota community, Mrs. Searing gave generously to our area’s most prized arts organizations. Asolo Rep is deeply grateful for the bequest Mrs. Searing granted the theatre, and, in December 2019, participated in installing a plaque in her honor near the main entrance. Thank you, Mrs. Searing, for all you have done for Asolo Rep and for this community.

Generous patrons of many Sarasota arts and service organizations, the Petersons always said, “Asolo Rep is the joy of our lives.” Their enthusiasm for the groundbreaking work of the theatre under Michael Donald Edwards’ leadership translated into their founding support of the Artistic Excellence Society. A bold matching challenge issued by the Petersons during Michael’s first season led to an overwhelming response from board members, a true vote of confidence for the new Producing Artistic Director. Lee’s vivacious chairmanship of many Asolo Rep events and Bob’s steady hand as Board Chair and Co-Chair of the Capital/Endowment Campaign meant so much to Asolo Rep over 24 seasons. We sadly miss their presence in the board room and on Opening Nights, but dearly cherish their memories.

JOAN ARMOUR MENDELL in memoriam A

Joan leveraged her prolific poetic talents to support her beloved Asolo Rep: the proceeds from sales of her two published volumes of poetry were designated to benefit the theatre. A true aficionada of all the arts, Joan was a faithful and ardent member of nearly every Opening Night house, as well as an enthusiastic member of the Asolo Rep Adventures travel club. Her capital gift to name Asolo Rep’s Joan Armour Mendell Scenic Studio was grandly celebrated in February 2012. Walt Whitman said, “To have great poets there must be great audiences,” and in Joan, we were fortunate to have both.

MARGOT COVILLE, in memoriam AND WARREN COVILLE A When Margot and Warren moved to Sarasota in 1994, Artistic Director Howard Millman introduced them to Asolo Rep. The Covilles have since learned that the productions here rival anything they have ever seen on Broadway or the West End. Margot and Warren have been passionate and generous Fellowship sponsors since 2004, and they have been inspirational philanthropic leaders for Asolo Rep and many other organizations. Pastpresident of the Asolo Rep board, Warren also served as the Chair of the Capital/Endowment Campaign for seven years, providing valuable leadership at its launch, guiding and growing the new endowment, and completing several key capital initiatives. Finding Sarasota a worldclass city, the Covilles have worked for over 25 years to improve its visibility and viability as a nexus for the arts. We are most grateful for their latest gift, a $1 Million matching challenge for the Staging Our Future Campaign. We will dearly miss Margot and we will cherish her memory.

MAURICE RICHARDS in memoriam, AND JACK KESLER A

^ Maurie and Jack’s immersive involvement in the Student Sponsorship program has opened many new opportunities for them in their retirement. “Watching the growth and development of our students’ talents has enriched our lives beyond expectation. Being constantly energized and inspired brings a new dimension and meaning to being senior citizens.” Recognizing the interdependence of the Theatre and the Conservatory, they have sculpted their estate plan to support not only student fellowships but also Conservatory needs and Asolo Rep programming. Maurie and Jack’s philanthropy beautifully personifies the many facets of a Crystal!

A very generous member of our community chose to make this gift anonymously. Although we cannot display a photograph, we would like to paint a picture in your mind’s eye. As a patron who enjoyed Asolo Rep performances for many years, this member of the Crystal Society made the first gift to qualify for the Endowment Matching Challenge in 2013 with a grand generous gesture in support of the Producing Artistic Director’s position. Many thanks for your unstinting kindness that will sustain Asolo Rep for generations to come!

STANLEY KANE in memoriam A in honor of Janet Kane

CHUCK AND MARGIE BARANCIK in memoriam A

SHARON AND HERMAN FRANKEL A

A three-time board president, Stanley’s vision and ardor helped the theatre survive and flourish through many challenges. In 1996, he brought his business know-how and strong community ties to bear to put Asolo Rep back on a path of fiscal health, and established a cash reserve campaign to insure financial stability into the future. Working with Florida State University and Sarasota Ballet, he helped turn the FSU Center for the Performing Arts into a vibrant, bursting-at-the-seams hub of creativity and excellence. In 2006, Stanley was instrumental in elevating the theatre’s Heritage Society—honoring donors whose estate plans include a testamentary gift to Asolo Rep—and increasing awareness of the need to provide for the organization’s future through deferred gifts. Stanley’s passing in 2020 at the age of 100 marked the culmination of a life spent in selfless service, and he will be deeply missed by the entire community.

Chuck and Margie were strong supporters of Asolo Rep and its mission to bring the highest level of adult and family theatre to our community, while also engaging our local schools and students. Chuck served on the Asolo Rep board for eight years, and he and Margie enjoyed being part of an everincreasing degree of professionalism in all of the Theatre’s endeavors. Although we tragically lost this wonderful couple in December 2019, we will always remember and cherish their kind and warm presence, and continue to appreciate the many ways they supported Asolo Rep, and this community, during their lifetimes.

An Asolo Rep board member since 2006, Herman has been extremely active and generous as co-chairman of the Facilities Committee— negotiating, strategizing and supporting the decisions to purchase and renovate the Robert and Beverly Koski Production Center, acquire thirteen apartments that comprise the Warren and Margot Coville Guest Artist Housing, and secure the Phillips Club residence in New York City. In 2016, the Frankels’ gift made possible the acquisition of a much-needed adjunct facility, the Herman and Sharon Frankel Asolo Rep Annex. The Frankels share a deep commitment to Asolo Rep and a willingness to provide the passionate and financial support so necessary for the theatre to thrive. As Crystal Society members, Sharon and Herman’s philanthropy shines through many facets of their beloved Asolo Rep!

Since moving to Sarasota in 2009, they have been active philanthropists, serving in leadership positions across many organizations. As supporters of Asolo Rep’s productions and education programs, they say, “For years, we have enjoyed the theatre, but we have never felt so connected with a performance as we do at Asolo Rep. This theatre provides a unique experience where the stimulating conversation that live performances provoke is heightened by our engagement with the actors.” Larry and Debbie joined our Crystal Society in the 17/18 season with their second endowment gift, made in memory of their daughter Dori Haspel.

VIRGINIA B. TOULMIN in memoriam A

EVA SLANE A in honor of Stephan Slane

A keen businesswoman with a generous heart, Virginia was amongst our greatest friends and benefactors throughout her life in Sarasota. Upon graduating from Washington University, Virginia became a stewardess nurse on the B&O railroad. There she met her husband-to-be, patent attorney Harry Toulmin, Jr. Harry encouraged Virginia to apply her medical knowledge and Midwest common sense to his business ventures, including Central Pharmaceuticals. Virginia steered the company to tremendous growth, sowing the seeds of her philanthropic legacy. She helped many Sarasota cultural organizations become what they are today. In her 2006 Hall of Fame video, CVA remarked, “her unselfish spirit, gentle wisdom, and quiet generosity serve as an example for others to emulate.” We were grateful to induct Virginia into our Crystal Society posthumously, celebrating her as a forever member of the Asolo Rep family.

Born in Germany to Austrian parents (her father was an opera singer, her mother, an actor), Eva arrived in America in 1939. As a NYC theatrical agent, Eva nurtured the careers of artists including James Earl Jones. In 1964, she married Stephan Slane, founder of the North Shore Music Theatre, once New England’s largest not-for-profit theater. Eva follows her lifelong passion for theater and encouraging youth by serving on the boards of Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe and Asolo Rep. Her support of our partnership with the FSU/ Asolo Conservatory has seen her sponsor 20 students since 1998! Her generous and caring nature is treasured by everyone she meets. Eva joined the Crystal Society in 2018 by virtue of her annual gifts to Asolo Rep over many seasons, and her planned gift designated for student fellowships.

CHARLIE HUISKING A Asolo Rep Board member Charlie Huisking is proud to support Asolo Rep and the FSU/Asolo Conservatory through both the Huisking Foundation and a fund at the Community Foundation of Sarasota County established by his late parents, Charles and Lillian (Pat) Huisking. “My parents loved Sarasota and the Asolo, and they started taking me to performances there in 1963, when I was in grade school,” says Huisking. “This theatre has been an integral part of our family life. I know my parents would be proud to see what it has become under Michael Donald Edwards.” We welcomed Charlie into the Crystal Society in 2019 based on his inclusion of Asolo Rep in his estate plan and a nearly 30-year history of annual contributions.

DR. RANDELL JOHNSON AND BOBBY JENSEN A

RON GREENBAUM, in memoriam, AND RITA GREENBAUM A

Sarasota’s performing arts scene and sophisticated culture lured Bobby and Randell here to buy their retirement home. They were arts patrons in Atlanta for two decades and have enjoyed their experiences with theatre in Sarasota. “We have found the quality at Asolo Rep to be comparable to performances found anywhere in the U.S.” Since their introduction to the FSU/Asolo Conservatory in 2006 and Asolo Rep in 2009, Bobby and Randell have created events to introduce the LGBTQ community to seasonal performances, and developed programs that encourage subscription support. Having traveled extensively with their work, they enjoy the way Asolo Rep creates for its patrons a cultural immersion through the playwright’s words, the director’s vision, and the actors’ talents without ever leaving our great community. They delight in their sponsorship of the FSU/ Asolo Conservatory student program, Artistic Excellence Society, and, this year, the Asolo Rep Sustainability Fund.

Ron Greenbaum started his support of Asolo Rep as an Angel donor in 1986. Three years later he was writing letters to other donors to encourage them to become Co-Producers, a task he carried out for over thirty years as the Chair of the Board’s Development Committee. After joining the Board in 1991, he served on the Executive Committee since 1999, and for three terms as Board Chair, from 2001-2003 and 2008-2009. With his wife, Rita, they hosted an annual appreciation party for Asolo Rep’s major contributors for many years. They have supported the theatre’s Education & Engagement programs, events, and championed the work Asolo Rep produces on its stages. In 2019, Asolo Rep welcomed Ron and Rita to the Crystal Society in grateful acknowledgement of their steadfast support over a long period of service to this organization. We will miss Ron’s presence at our Opening Nights, special events, and especially in the board room, where his passion and commitment made such a difference towards the success of Asolo Rep.

“We want to open this world to children, families, and adults who might not otherwise have this unique experience with live theatre.” —Beverly Koski

DRS. JOEL AND GAIL MORGANROTH

In addition to her steadfast support as a Co-Producer and Conservatory Student Sponsor, Beverly Koski and her family have made a special gift this season through the Koski Family Foundation. Their generous grant will catalyze our efforts to welcome new audience members to the theatre, by supporting Education & Engagement programs including Family Days, the IllumiNation series, and other initiatives. “All members of our community should have the opportunity to experience the arts in powerful ways,” says Beverly. “Asolo Rep’s productions are not only exceptional in quality–the stories played out on stage help us feel what it’s like to walk in another’s shoes. We want to open this world to children, families, and adults who might not otherwise have this unique experience with live theatre.”

Drs. Joel and Gail Morganroth have lived in Sarasota for 10 years residing on Siesta Key. Joel currently serves as a Trustee for Ringling College of Art and Design, Sarasota Memorial Hospital Foundation, Marie Selby Gardens, and Jewish Federation of Sarasota, and recently joined the board of Asolo Rep. Hailing from Philadelphia, he is an academic cardiologist with his primary research focus on the diagnosis and treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. For over a decade, he was a Medical Review Officer/Expert for the Food and Drug Administration and has served in a similar capacity for other regulatory bodies. Gail is a Professor of Medicine and holds an endowed chair in Medical Education at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. During her 20-year tenure as Senior Vice Dean for Education she oversaw the academic program office (medical education, admissions process, and medical student activities). She now serves as the Executive Director of the Innovation Center for On-Line Education. We are very grateful to Joel and Gail for their leadership gift in support of the Terrace Stage this season.

ANDREW AND JUDITH ECONOMOS

HUISKING FOUNDATION CHARLIE HUISKING A

Andrew and Judith Economos are pleased to be helping Asolo Rep. In his youth, Andrew was an actor in a theatre tour group in Florida, and remembers well what theatre can do. Both graduated from the University of Florida and went on to Los Angeles, working in aerospace computing. Both earned Ph.D.s from UCLA. Returning to the East Coast, Andrew worked at Sarnoff Labs and Judith taught philosophy at Princeton University. They moved to New York, where Andrew was a vice president at NBC for 14 years. They supported theatre in the City and Westchester. Leaving NBC, Andrew started a company making pioneering software for broadcasters worldwide. Now retired in Florida, they have discovered theatre in Sarasota where Andrew serves on the Selby Gardens, Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe, Faulhaber Science Center, and Asolo Rep Boards.

Charlie carries on a family tradition by sponsoring students in the FSU/ Asolo Conservatory: “My mother was a Conservatory donor for nine years, and the experience enriched the last part of her life. I’m finding the relationship equally enjoyable.” Charlie’s contributions benefit several giving areas; however, it may be that his work in the community on Asolo Rep’s behalf is the most valuable. As chair of the Government Relations Committee, Charlie connects office-holders and candidates with the theatre’s work, and demonstrates its positive economic impact on the region. In addition, as part of the IllumiNation advisory team, he helps us reach out into our community with programs that link theatre with pertinent issues and make theatre relevant to our 21st Century.

BEVERLY AND BOB BARTNER A

BETTY-JEAN AND DAVID BAVAR A

SUSAN AND JIM BUCK A

DON AND JO ANN BURHART A

Bob and Beverly Bartner have been dedicated to the arts and the importance of them for more than 30 years. On the Boards of The NY Metropolitan Opera, NY Philharmonic, Jazz at Lincoln Center and Asolo Rep. Along with their longtime partners, Norman and the late Alice Tulchin, they have produced scores of award winning plays on Broadway and in London. Beverly and Bob are proud to be associated with Asolo Rep and its team led by Michael Donald Edwards who have raised the awareness of the beauty of the spoken word by presenting first-rate works, executed by dedicated and talented actors, which make Sarasota a better place in which to live.

Betty-Jean and David Bavar have been proud supporters of Asolo Rep for over 20 seasons. They share a love of theatre and were drawn to Sarasota from Baltimore for its rich cultural scene— renowned orchestra, theatre, and ballet companies. “Being on the Asolo Rep Board has been a rewarding and exciting experience! It’s a special community of which I’m thrilled to be a part,” says David. The theatre is a lifelong love for the Bavars and they’re dedicated to ensuring the next generation is afforded this wonderful experience. “Both David and I went to the theatre as children and continued the tradition with our family. We believe the theatre is a magical experience for children and adults, opening doors to extraordinary places and worlds,” says Betty-Jean. The Bavars are looking forward to the coming season.

As long-time major supporters of Asolo Rep, Susan and Jim are a dynamic duo that makes Asolo Rep unique. Since 1999, Susan has been a Board member lending her expertise across the organization, serving as President from 2009-2011. She has co-chaired two Galas, and led Asolo Rep Adventures trips to London, San Diego, the Stratford and Shaw Festivals, and New York. Currently, she is a member of the Executive, Nominating & Governance, Development and Stewardship Committees. The Bucks are pleased to support Asolo Rep as Presenters this season. Although they both lead very active lives traveling, flying, boating, and volunteering, Susan and Jim always go above and beyond the call to support and promote Asolo Rep. We are truly better off because of this amazing pair.

Hailing from Kansas, Don and Jo Ann Burhart have always enjoyed an adventurous social life. When they discovered Asolo Rep in Sarasota, the experience of live theatre with friends familiar and new became an enriching part of their lives. “Asolo Rep has become so meaningful for us, beyond pure entertainment. To understand everything that goes into bringing a production to the stage–to meet each director, cast and creative team member, and hear their insights–accentuates how we experience the plays and musicals as audience members,” say Jo Ann and Don. In addition to supporting Asolo Rep as Presenters, Don and Jo Ann make our events and trips more festive, fashionable and successful. “Asolo Rep has truly become part of our family,” says Jo Ann, and we are grateful for it!

They watched Asolo mature and improve during visits from their international postings for many years. Since moving to Sarasota from New York in 2010, they have enjoyed Asolo Rep’s Broadway quality productions and the many opportunities to learn more about the artistry, design and business of musicals and plays. In their opinion, nothing is humdrum about Asolo Rep. Its patrons and staff embrace all who walk through the doors looking for rich, wonderful, thought provoking entertainment. Sarasota is the culture magnet of Florida and the southeastern United States because of the Arts and especially because of Asolo Repertory Theatre.

CAROLE CROSBY RUBY E. AND CAROLE CROSBY FAMILY FOUNDATION A Since the 1970s when Carole’s parents retired to Sarasota and attended performances at the original Historic Asolo Theater, Asolo Rep has been a part of Carole’s life. Principal harpist with the Detroit Symphony while simultaneously pursuing her law degree, she later became a partner at a major Detroit law firm. But, as Carole describes, “Loving the life and culture in Sarasota, my husband Larry Wickless and I decided to relocate here full time.” Lending her knowledge and experience, Carole also serves on Asolo Rep’s Board as President and as an Endowment Trustee. Asolo Rep is truly fortunate to have Carole and Larry’s support across the organization.

HENNY AND DENNIS DIRKS Henny and Dennis Dirks have been strong supporters of Asolo Rep and are very appreciative of its artistic excellence. They are season subscribers and since Dennis was involved in theatre both in high school and college, they are both pleased and excited to help sponsor students studying theatre at the Conservatory. Dennis is an Asolo Rep Board member and currently serves as the Treasurer.

DIANE TAYLOR FOXMAN, in loving memory of Norman Foxman Diane has been a Co-Producer at Asolo Rep for three seasons and joins us this season as a Presenter. She never misses a chance to hop on board a plane, train, or boat for an Asolo Rep Adventure. She is a tremendous advocate for the theatre, spreading Asolo Rep’s name throughout the community. “Being active at Asolo Rep gives me the opportunity to purchase tickets for others and open up the world of theatre to people who might not otherwise have access.”

“Sarasota is the culture magnet of Florida and the southeastern United States because of the Arts and especially because of Asolo Rep.” —Ann and Tom Charters

SHARON AND HERMAN FRANKEL A

LARRY AND DEBBIE HASPEL A

NONA MACDONALD HEASLIP A

Ardent champions of the theatre’s work, Sharon and Herman are in every Opening Night audience applauding the performance. Their gifts to the Artistic Excellence Fund over the past eight years have enhanced the theatre’s capacity to introduce world premiere works such as Noah Racey’s Pulse, Hero: The Musical, Luck Be a Lady, Josephine, and Beatsville. By supporting areas across the organization, Sharon and Herman demonstrate their fervent belief in Asolo Rep’s value to our community and ensure that the theatre will continue to strengthen and flourish.

Larry and Debbie’s support for so many aspects of our operations and programs is only matched by their able and passionate leadership. Together, Larry and Debbie are serving on the Staging Our Future Capital Campaign Committee, raising funds to establish essential facilities for production, education, and public programs, and to endow their maintenance and upkeep. We are grateful that Larry and Debbie are part of the Asolo Rep family, and for their special role in charting our path for the future.

Board Member Nona Macdonald Heaslip, whose career includes journalism, radio-TV production and public relations, claims, “My avocation is attending theatre wherever I live: Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, London and Manhattan. As a ‘Snow Bird,’ I’m delighted to attend the outstanding productions here at Asolo Rep and the exciting special events for donors. I would welcome visits from our Asolo family to the theatre scene in Toronto, Stratford, and Niagara-onthe-Lake.” An alumna of the University of Toronto, and a recipient of three honorary doctorates, Nona is a dedicated supporter of the Arts in Canada.

BARBARA JACOB Barbara’s passion for the performing arts inspired her move to Sarasota just 8 years ago when fellow Chautauquans’ enthusiasm encouraged her to move where she could continue to support the arts year-round. Here, she has embraced the opportunity to sponsor graduate students who make the performing arts their life’s work though the FSU/Asolo Conservatory program. Barbara delights in watching the students grow over the three-year program, and attends multiple performances of Conservatory shows to see how their characters “marinate” during a show’s run. Barbara is also especially proud to support Asolo Rep’s efforts to bring arts education to Sarasota area youth. “They represent the future of the theatre!”

“…we can gather, we need to gather because art, music, dance, theatre, performance is itself a vaccine.” – Frank Galati, Tony Award® Winning Director in memoriam Indicates contributors who have made gifts for Asolo Rep’s Endowment.

CAROLYN KEYSTONE AND JIM MEEKISON A Carolyn and Jim experienced their first Asolo Rep production in late 2005, shortly after they moved to the Sarasota community. As long-time supporters of the arts and other not-for-profit organizations in Canada, they were so impressed with the quality of the performance and with the Theatre, that they became season subscribers. They have since seen nearly every production, become key financial supporters of the Theatre, and co-chaired the 2012 Annual Gala, Ragtime Revival, the most successful event of the season. Carolyn is beginning her eleventh season as a member of the Asolo Rep Board. For the past fifteen years, we have been extremely blessed by their strong passion for theatre and their dedication to Asolo Rep. We are so grateful to have their support!

DAVID PETERSON

MAURICE RICHARDS

Having grown up in a family immersed in art and culture, David’s career as an artist and industrial designer seems almost foreordained. His sculptures and paintings have been featured locally in exhibits at Art Center Sarasota, State of the Art Gallery, and the Herald Tribune lobby gallery. A Sarasota resident for the past six years, David is a regular patron of not only Asolo Rep, but also Sarasota Ballet, Sarasota Orchestra, and Sarasota Opera. He is proud to continue his support of Asolo Rep in honor of his late parents Lee and Bob Peterson.

AND JACK KESLER A

“Thank you for the wonderful opportunity we had to see Fannie. I still think about it. The outdoor venue is magnificent. We take for granted the beauty of the Asolo building, until it’s off limits, but the whole scene is truly magical.” – Annie Esformes,

in memoriam,

What started as one student sponsorship eleven years ago has blossomed into three students, one in each class, and numerous Asolo Rep programs each season. In honor of the work of David Covach in the Costume Shop, Maurie and Jack make an annual gift to the Angels; to help empower Michael Donald Edwards to dream bigger, they support the Artistic Excellence Society; and to make sure our productions are accessible to all audiences, they subsidize tickets for young people to participate in our IllumiNation programming. They are also first in line to volunteer when we need help with a mailing! Being connected with so many aspects of Asolo Rep fills up their calendar with performances, events, discussions, and classroom showings.

JANIS AND HOBART SWAN A

GERI AND RON YONOVER

The Swans were inspired to get involved with Asolo Rep eight years ago, after Janis experienced a luncheon presentation by directors Michael Donald Edwards and Frank Galati describing The American Character Project and its five-year arc of productions. Now season presenters for the fourth year, Skip and Janis share a strong belief in the good work being produced by Asolo Rep and the great value it adds to the Sarasota cultural scene. As former residents of the Chicago and Baltimore areas, and as international travelers, Janis and Skip’s lives have always been enriched by enjoying and supporting the arts. They are delighted to attest to the world-class excellence of Asolo Rep’s productions and the capability of its leadership.

Ever since Ron and Geri Yonover arrived in the Sarasota area they have been big fans of Asolo Rep. They have followed along with all the other supporters from the old theater to the new one. And as the years went by, they noticed a gradual but profound improvement in the quality of the performances; not only in the acting, but also in virtually every other aspect of theatre production. Many times in the last few years they have made more than favorable comparisons to Broadway productions. Geri is delighted to begin her fifth year of service on the Board of Directors, and together, the Yonovers are thrilled and honored to play a small role in helping Asolo Rep achieve excellence in the theatre.

The STAGING OUR FUTURE Capital Campaign, co-chaired by Ann Charters and Margaret Wise will: EVOLVE

Invest in the future of Asolo Rep by developing new income streams Attract nationally respected producers to develop shows entirely within our buildings Enable us to take on additional outside commissions as well as develop a profitable rental business in costumes and wigs, with expanded construction shop and industry standard storage Generate additional rental income by making event spaces, classrooms, and conference rooms available to community groups

“Asolo Rep knows how to leverage a crisis and overcome a challenge – it’s our superpower! Faced with the possibility of no performances this season, the Asolo Rep Production Team, led by Vic Meyrich, designed and built the Terrace Stage and Michael Donald Edwards produced a remarkable season of five performances that cheered and sustained us through the theatre 'drought' caused by the pandemic. Likewise, with the commitment of Development leadership, the support of the Asolo Rep Board and donors from the community, funds were raised to enable the theatre to commit to phase one of the Robert and Beverly Koski Center expansion project. Very soon now, Asolo Rep will have two new rehearsal halls, breakout studios, costume storage, office spaces, and so many other auxiliary spaces. We will truly be STAGING OUR FUTURE.” ‑Bev Koski 46

ASOLO REP ARTISTIC E XCELLENCE SOCIE T Y

The Artistic Excellence Society champions bold, groundbreaking theatre for Asolo Rep’s stages. This intimate group of donors supports Producing Artistic Director Michael Donald Edwards' selection of plays and musicals that embody a spirit of risk-taking, collaboration, and innovation. Artistic Excellence Society donations help to enhance production values and give us the confidence to produce artistically demanding shows or productions that may challenge our audiences. Thank you to the following supporters of the Artistic Excellence Society. Gifts are current as of December 31, 2020

Mercedita OConnor Maurice Richards* and Jack Kesler Flori Roberts* Alan Rose Richard and Gail Rubin* Jack and Priscilla Schlegel Paul and Sharon Steinwachs Wes and Nancy Stukenberg Leon and Marysue Wechsler

LIFETIME HONORARY MEMBER David Peterson SOCIETY FOUNDERS Lee and Bob Peterson*

The word “Asolo” originated in Asolo, Italy with a lovely 18th-century theater acquired by the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art for its collection more than 60 years ago. In this little jewel of a theatre, a fledgling acting company, founded by faculty of Florida State University (FSU), began performing a summer series of plays first as the Asolo Theatre Festival and later as the Asolo Theatre Company.

Later, the company grew to become the respected first State Theatre of Florida, eventually evolving into a year-round professional theatre, a member of the prestigious League of Resident Theatres (LORT). In 1973, the theatre officially partnered with the FSU School of Theatre to mentor the actors in its MFA program —a relationship which became the highly acclaimed FSU/Asolo Conservatory for Actor Training.

The acting company and its audiences eventually outgrew the Ringling’s Historic Asolo Theater, and in 1989 the company moved into its current home within the FSU Center for the Performing Arts, where it has enjoyed notable success.

A S O L O R E P E D U C AT I O N & E N G A G E M E N T

Education & Engagement donors partner with Asolo Rep in making professional live theatre accessible for everyone in our community. Our programming engages a wide variety of audiences and invites them to connect and create through exciting and innovative theatrical experiences.

ACCESS TO THE ARTS is an umbrella of programs that create opportunities for young people, community members, and educators to experience the connections, learning, and excitement in professional theatre. In 2020-2021, Asolo Rep made a selection of our world-class productions available to stream to classrooms, distance learning students, and community organizations. These theatrical experiences can be explored from home or classroom, making them accessible to more students in more places. ASOLO REP ONLINE CLASSES are spaces for students to be inspired by

professional artists, their peers, and themselves. We facilitate experiences for young people and adults who want to deepen their knowledge of the theatrical art form to have a safe and innovate space to do so—a learning laboratory for all aspects of the performing arts.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Programs include:

VOICES OF CHANGE

›

THE ILLUMINATION SERIES explores the social, political, and cultural themes threaded throughout Asolo Rep’s theatrical season. For the 2021 IllumiNation Series, three digital events will focus on art and issues of race, gender, identity, and cultural intersection.

›

VOICES OF CHANGE is an interactive conversation with our community, in partnership with various community organizations and schools. The vision of this program is to connect using theatre, storytelling, conversation, and collaboration, amplifying more voices in a wide spectrum of communities with a digital, shareable outcome.

›

KALEIDOSCOPE is an umbrella of programs that use the performing arts to celebrate the unique voice and creative expression of individuals with disabilities. Through innovative and responsive arts experiences, sharing stories, and learning techniques of theatre, Kaleidoscope examines what it means to be an individual and an artist.

ASOLO REP ENGAGE is an online education, dramaturgy, and engagement platform

that invites the community into our creative process, and celebrates the art of theatre and all the people who create it. Education & Engagement Digital Content includes: Nia Explains it All, Mini-Masterclasses, Games & Activities, Digital Talkbacks

ASOLO REP AROUND TOWN

DEEPEN YOUR THEATRE EXPERIENCE

The Asolo Rep Theatre Guild is a diverse group of people who share a passion for theatre and a commitment to its future in our community. From traveling play readings and backstage revelations as told by the artists and crew to dinners with the cast and creative teams, the Asolo Rep Theatre Guild furthers the experience of live theatre beyond the performance. The Guild is one of the oldest auxiliary organizations serving a Sarasota arts institution, marking its 47th year in 2021. Guild members serve as ambassadors to Asolo Rep through programs designed to provide members and the public with a greater understanding and appreciation of live theatre. The mission of the Guild is to help preserve and promote Asolo Rep’s place in our community while engaging present audiences and cultivating future theatregoers. Guild members enjoy a special benefit – building close, lasting relationships by joining with others who share the love of theatre.

Asolo Rep donors at the Angels level and higher receive special offers from these local businesses that participate in the Asolo Rep Around Town program by showing their Contributor Cards. OUR MISSION Engage and inspire audiences with extraordinary theatrical experiences created with vision, passion and artistry and enhanced by deeply integrated education and community outreach programs.

COMMITMENT TO ANTI-RACISM INCLUSION, DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND ACCESS Asolo Rep is committed to becoming a more inclusive, diverse, and anti-racist institution at all levels. In order to intentionally address injustice and racism we believe theatre must become a leading force in telling the stories of our time to inform and influence a better future. We will reflect upon our past, investigate our current course of action, and develop a responsive and sustainable plan to break down barriers to access and challenge racism and bias within our institution and our community. Our commitment to Anti-Racism, Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) requires that we continue to actively listen, seek learning opportunities, create space for direct and open discourse and strive to meet people where they are—taking time to effect lasting change together.
