MISSION ASKUSBEAUTY
3 FALL 2023

If there’s one single characteristic that I know to be true about myself, it’s my eternal optimism. I like to say I’m allergic to naysayers and negativity. I believe anything is possible, and I like to surround myself with people like me, who will see a positive outcome, no matter what. I guess that’s why I became an entrepreneur.

A retired Olympic gymnast once said, “Optimism is a happiness magnet. If you stay positive, good people will be drawn to you.” That quote is so close to my heart, especially as we reflect on and celebrate the second anniversary of Ask Us Beauty.

Starting a magazine with no experience in media might sound crazy to some — okay, many — but sharing stories is what we do, and we do it well. Every story is unique and meaningful to us and our readers. Yes, a print and digital magazine is a lot of work, but it’s also exhilarating and ever-evolving, just like us.

So, this issue is a celebration — of people and diversity, of our thoughts, feelings, experiences, and knowledge. It is our outlet to be vulnerable with one another. From

small towns and big hearts to bright stars and everyday beauties, our goal will always be to promote living our best lives and defining beauty on our own terms.

And to the hundreds of individuals who have graced our pages over these last two years by giving us a positive story to share with our community, we sincerely thank you. Let’s celebrate you, let’s celebrate us, let’s celebrate beauty.

Here’s to the next two years. We’ve got big plans, and my optimistic cup is over and ever-flowing!

XOXO, We love celebrating Beauty! Make sure to nominate someone who is an everyday beauty that inspires others and if your application is selected they will be featured in our print & digital magazine. Visit askusbeautymagazine.com

The Ultimate Fall Self-Care

Survival Guide

As the vibrant colors of summer fade and the crispness of fall fills the air, it’s time to embark upon a self-care journey that will nourish your mind, body, and soul.

Fall is a time of transformation — a reminder that change is both inevitable and beautiful. As the trees shed their leaves, we, too, can shed what no longer serves us and cultivate a deeper sense of self-awareness and self-compassion. By embracing the principles of self-care, we can replenish our energy, find balance in our lives, and rediscover the joy of simply being.

As a Certified Life Coach, Yoga and Meditation Teacher, and Self-Care Expert, I’m delighted to share my fall must-haves and go-to’s. From inspiring practices and empowering rituals to rejuvenating products, The Ultimate Fall Self-Care Survival Guide will help you navigate the seasonal transition gracefully and embrace the beauty of self-love.

Meditate for Fall Calm

Decreased stress, increased focus and productivity, boosted immune system, and better sleep are among the amazing benefits of meditation. If you’ve been hesitant to try it or are unsure where to begin, I invite you to explore this 10-minute guided meditation for calm. It will introduce you to a

whole new world of relaxation and well-being. Whether you’re a beginner or have practiced meditation before, this 10-minute experience will elevate your fall self-care and wellness to a new level of zen.

Level Up Your Fall Skincare Routine

A proper skincare routine is vital for maintaining a healthy glow during the autumn season. Hydration plays a key role in the fall months, so if you’ve been using lighter summer creams, cleansers, and gels, now is the perfect time to consider switching to richer and creamier products that provide deeper hydration.

Skinceuticals TRIPLE LIPID RESTORE 2:4:2 ($150, Skinceuticals.com) is an exceptional anti-aging cream that nourishes the skin and addresses signs of aging. This unique lipid correction cream contains a revolutionary 2:4:2 cholesterol-dominant ratio, which effectively restores the skin’s external barrier and supports natural self-repair. By nourishing aging skin, it visibly improves smoothness, firmness, pore appearance, and overall radiance. Adding this moisturizer to your self-care skincare routine is a must for the fall season.

De-Stress with Essential Oils

Properly sourced essential oils are not only real,

10 FALL 2023

but they’re also truly spectacular.

From the calming scent of lavender to the invigorating aroma of peppermint, essential oils have been proven to boost mood, aid in sleep, and reduce stress. Aromatherapy is the ultimate fall indulgence for wellness.

Bliss Essential is where luxury meets therapy. You can find your bliss every day with just a few drops in your bath, diffuser, massaged into your feet with your favorite cream, or even sprayed on your pillow. The Wellness Bliss Box ($62, BlissEssential. co) is a specially curated gift box containing four signature essential oil blends: one for sleep, stress, energy, and immunity. Elevate your senses and enhance your overall well-being.

Sleep Tight With the Right Bedding

Having the right bedding is essential for a good night’s sleep. Feeling too hot or cold in bed can significantly impact our ability to experience deep, restorative rest. As the fall season brings cooler temperatures, choosing bedding that strikes the perfect balance is essential—providing a bit more warmth than what’s suitable for summer while avoiding excessive sweating.

Cozy Earth’s Comforter ($599, CozyEarth. com) is the ultimate solution, offering an ideal middle ground. It’s light enough to keep you cool yet sufficiently weighted to keep you warm. Filled with 100% Mulberry Silk and encased in premium bamboo viscose, this comforter offers an incredibly soft and luxurious feel. Its

temperature-regulating properties and yearround breathability ensure you stay comfortably cool during the summer and cozy throughout the fall and winter. Sleep tight at night!

Stay Warm With Seasonal Teas

Your favorite sweater, the aroma of pumpkin spice, and a captivating book are the best parts of fall. It’s a season that invites us to embrace coziness and comfort. So what better way to warm up than with a cup of your new favorite pumpkin spice tea?

Pumpkin Spice ($19.95, FirebellyTea.com) is everything nice-- and the epitome of autumn delight. This tea is a true classic, infused with real pumpkin pieces, giving it the delicious essence of pumpkin pie. The blend of organic cinnamon, apple, and ginger creates a warm and flavorful taste that perfectly captures the essence of fall. So, grab your coziest blanket and journal, and indulge in the soothing warmth of this autumn tea for the ultimate self-care experience.

I’d love to know—what is part of YOUR self-care routine?

The Power of

Lipstick

Iam Suhay Gonzalez, Founder of Seis Cosmetics, a self-funded company specializing in lipstick. After losing my mother to brain cancer, I merged my passion for finance, business, and makeup to create an outlet for converting my grief into something beautiful. As a Latina, designing diverse shades that complement everyone is extremely important to me, and using quality ingredients is also a must. One of our hero products, the Semi Matte Lipstick, is vegan and made with clean ingredients that deliver a unique blend of natural emollients, vitamins, and highperforming pigments — currently available in 14 gorgeous colors.

Lipstick holds a significant place in the world of beauty and cosmetics. While its primary purpose is

to enhance the appearance of the lips, the power of lipstick extends beyond its cosmetic function.

12 FALL 2023

1. Lipstick instills confidence. Adding color and definition to the lips enhances facial features and creates a focal point, boosting self-esteem and making people feel more put together and attractive.

2. Lipstick promotes self-expression. Whether someone prefers bold and vibrant colors or subtle and natural hues, lipstick allows them to showcase their unique identity, personality, mood, and style.

3. Lipstick holds cultural and historical significance. For centuries, lipstick has symbolized everything from beauty, femininity, status, and even rebellion in civilizations around the world.

Lipstick is a dynamic tool for complementing natural beauty, but it’s important to remember that true beauty comes from within. In dedication to that inner beauty, Seis Cosmetics donates a portion of our profits to brain cancer research in honor of my mother. And, in the spirit of National Lipstick Day, join me in celebrating the power of lipstick by supporting cosmetics for a cause.

Miranda LAMBERT CELEBRATING

14
FALL 2023

From her early days playing talent shows and honky-tonk bars to becoming a decorated artist performing on some of the world’s biggest stages, country music superstar Miranda Lambert has managed to do something incredibly rare in the music industry: stay true to herself and own it. She’s what I like to call ‘A Real One.’

It’s evident to anyone following her journey that her roots run deep. In everything she’s done, the Texas-bred badass has been guided by the principle that surrounding yourself with good people and celebrating life’s daily joys help you be the best version of yourself. “My mom and her group of friends were a huge influence on me. I learned a lot from them about all the stages

15 FALL 2023

Courtesy of Dey Street Books, an imprint of HarperCollins Publishers

16 FALL 2023

of life, how to handle whatever comes with grace, and how important it is to lean on your friends,” Miranda shared. And she honors those influences in all of her endeavors.

One of the most recent tributes to Miranda’s loved ones is her newly released cookbook, Y’all Eat Yet?, now a NYT Bestseller. The recipes that fill the pages are highlights of beloved family celebrations, moments at the very core of Miranda’s heart. “We love to cook and enjoy meals together,” she said. “The book is about our family and friends and how we rally around each other. It’s all about sisterhood and spending time together.” In addition to her cookbook, Miranda pays homage to her origins through the Wanda June Home brand, named after her grandma, Wanda Louise, and her mom, Beverly June (available exclusively at Walmart). But to truly understand Miranda’s dedication to celebrating strong women, you needn’t look any further than her music.

Even if you don’t consider yourself a country music fan (wake up, people!), you still probably know who Miranda Lambert is. Heck, you may even know the words to a couple of her songs. This true country queen has put out hit after hit, cranking out anthems for women that empower us to be bold, brave, and a little bit brassy. She sings from the heart with grit, and her musical storytelling has cemented her as one of the greatest songwriters in modern country music. From chart-topping hits like “Gunpowder and Lead,” “White Liar,” and “Mama’s Broken Heart” to more understated yet equally as influential ballads like “The House That Built Me” and “Bluebird,” Miranda holds court as the most decorated artist in the history of the Academy of Country Music. She’s earned ten number-one

singles, 38 ACM Awards (including a recordsetting nine consecutive Female Artist of the Year Awards), 14 CMA Awards, three Grammy Awards, an ACM Song of the Decade Award, and was the youngest artist ever to serve as the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum’s Artist in Residence.

And if that’s not impressive enough, Miranda also makes up one-third of the Grammynominated country female supergroup Pistol Annies, alongside talented singer-songwriters Ashley Monroe and Angaleena Presley. The trio is known to celebrate fierce, fun women and their life stories through their riveting lyrics and highheel spitfire spirits. Can I get a Hell Yeah? With so many accomplishments under her belt (or, should I say, in her boots), Miranda continues to pave her own road, trusting her gut every step of the way. She’s tackled every obstacle with her own unique brand of fearless authenticity, bringing the women — and men — who support her along for the ride. We see that again as she embarks on a new musical journey, having recently announced the end of a 20-year contract with record label Sony Music Nashville and embracing a different path in a way only she can. “I feel free right now to create and to really dig in. I’m excited to find a family at a label that wants to continue this journey with me while pushing me to think outside the box and keep creating,” she told us. This creative artistry places Miranda in a lane of her own. Her latest single, “If You Were Mine,” is a beautiful duet with fellow Grammy-winning artist Leon Bridges that blends country and R&B, resulting in a musical collaboration masterpiece.

Clearly, there is no shortage of reasons to rejoice in the Miranda Lambert camp. And

17 FALL 2023
18 FALL 2023

with a milestone birthday approaching, she’s welcoming the new perspectives that come with turning 40 and looking forward to dedicating more time to herself and the things that matter most. “I’ve learned how to put self-care at the forefront of my priorities. It’s super important to take time for yourself in order to be able to show up and be 100% in your life,” Miranda shared. Part of that self-care, she told us, is feeling your best. She said, “The number one key to beauty is true happiness — and some good moisturizer. I learned that from my mama!”

Another aspect of beauty that Miranda has mastered is style. In a world of lookalikes and dwindling individuality, she’s kept it real with her signature look: a bit of rock and roll with a whole lot of country. Miranda’s trademark combo of a bandana, t-shirt, and fringe is the kind of kick-ass cool and effortless yet put-together style she now shares with the world through her lifestyle brand Idyllwind. This massive undertaking was inspired by Miranda’s desire to create fashion that would represent female empowerment and uplift women of every age and every size. “Idyllwind is all about feeling empowered,” Miranda said. “It’s about being fearless and trying new things while looking and feeling your best. I am so proud of this brand and what we have built. I started riding horses at 30, and I was a little fearful at first, but horses have now become a part of my life that brings me joy and zen. Because of that, I ended up naming the company after my horse Ellie. Her full name is Idyllwind Ellund. She gave me the confidence to try something new, and I hope that’s what these clothes do for women, too.”

offer a whole new level of swag. When you wear Idyllwind, you feel like you are stepping into Miranda’s closet and coming out with your chin held higher. The brand includes comfortable, soft, affordable, and great-fitting clothes and boots — what Miranda calls her “trusties,” clothes you can always put on and feel good wearing. Miranda believes how we feel in our clothes plays into our confidence as women, which is why both the look and the feel of Idyllwind items are so important to her.

“Those things are such a reflection of someone’s personality and who they are on the inside. I love the self-expression that comes with clothing and accessories,” she shared. “Boots are my love language.” And the 50 pairs — and counting — she owns makes her the perfect person to curate these pieces.

Idyllwind’s vintage and retro apparel and accessories (including cowboy boots, of course)

The Miranda Lambert party doesn’t end there, though. This year, Miranda is commemorating her wildly successful music career by headlining her Velvet Rodeo Las Vegas Residency at Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino. Her performance of fan-favorite songs that carry passion and speak the truth creates a spectacular one-ofa-kind experience that gets fans on their feet and in their feels. This show is a testament to Miranda’s unparalleled decades-long musical evolution, something she never takes for granted. “Oh man, it’s been a journey for sure. I have been so lucky to live my dream and to still be doing what I love. One of the best parts of this ride is the team around me. I’ve had the same manager, agent, business manager, and lawyer since the beginning, and we’ve built it together. The other very vital part, of course, is the fans. They have been with me for 20 years, and without them, I wouldn’t have any of this.”

19 FALL 2023
20 FALL 2023

Whether it’s through songwriting, visual storytelling (I mean, have you seen her music videos?), live performances, or her business ventures, Miranda Lambert continues to make her mark and leave a lasting impact on women all over the world. This ‘Real One’ is a true champion of women and a celebrator of life. “We have to lift each other up and catch each other when we fall. It’s so important to inspire and to be inspired by other women.” We couldn’t agree more, Miranda. Cheers to you!

BeautiesEveryday

Ariana Zurita

Age: 38

Location: Los Angeles

What makes you beautiful?

My beauty grows from the seeds of experience. I am an imperfect human. I make mistakes. I choose to be kind and gentle with myself. I know that I can learn from everyone. I listen and tend to my garden, so that I can be a better person to myself and others. My physical beauty does not define me. I know that it will all fade away someday, and what will be left are the beautiful connections and memories that I have made.

What’s one tip or piece of advice you would give when it comes to beauty?

Do not attempt to change yourself for the sake of others. Many of us have learned that beauty is only possible via our exterior, but it comes from deep within. It comes from empathy, wisdom, and self kindness. Slowly, let go of all the made-up beauty standards and thoughtfully replace those ideas with this: I am enough now as I am and am grateful for this body that allows me to experience life. Do what feels right and do what feels kind to yourself.

Becca Kyle

Age: 44

Location: Austin, TX

What makes you beautiful?

Embracing my natural silver hair and feeling empowered by it makes me beautiful. I started going gray at 18 and spent decades covering it up. When I turned 40, I was DONE covering it up, and now I LOVE it. Not only do I get a ton of compliments on my silvers, but I also feel like I’m

showing up as my authentic self, which makes me feel confident and vibrant.

What’s one tip or piece of advice you would give when it comes to beauty?

The best way to have a beautiful outside is to have a beautiful inside. Working on optimal health decreases inflammation and oxidative stress in the body, reduces toxic burden, supports nutrient and mineral absorption, and more. When your body is healthy, your outer beauty will shine. I’m a certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner, and my clients, on average, easily end up looking five years younger when we address the root causes of their health issues. So hydrate, eat an anti-inflammatory diet, open up detox pathways and release toxins, eradicate infections (parasites, bacteria, mold, candida), use clean personal care and cleaning products, support genetics, optimize gut health, reduce stress, get restorative sleep, ground and get sunlight daily. When your insides are healthy, your outsides will glow with vibrant health. Plus, it makes your skin look AMAZING.

Leora Barak

Age: 58

Location: Toronto, Canada

What makes you beautiful?

What makes anyone beautiful? Yes, facial appearance, body weight, and shape make someone beautiful. But there’s an important difference between what we initially view as beautiful when we meet someone and what keeps them as beautiful to us. So, no matter how physically appealing someone may be, they won’t appear beautiful to us for very long if they lack basic human attributes. What keeps someone looking beautiful is intrinsic. It may be one’s confidence or kindness to some or one’s dignity and intelligence

26 FALL 2023

to others. I hope that what makes ME beautiful are the attributes that keep me beautiful.

What’s one tip or piece of advice you would give when it comes to beauty?

In this day and age, with so many comparisons on social media, it’s very hard to remain secure and satisfied with how we look and who we are as individuals. My one piece of advice when it comes to beauty is that, in spite of it all, embrace all that you are. Accept every age and every stage. Do what you can to take care of yourself — eat well, stay active, think positively, learn to relax, and maintain healthy social connections. Go out of your way to feel good about yourself. When you build a strong foundation, cultivate a sense of unconditional self-worth, and create inner peace and self-contentment, then you will feel truly beautiful. And nothing can touch that.

Laura Soulios

Age: 38

Location: Stouffville, Ontario, Canada

What makes you beautiful?

Beautiful to me is not just focusing on the outer appearance but incorporating the inner as well. Qualities such as kindness, confidence, authenticity, intelligence, and even compassion are rare in this day and age. In a world where we are bombarded with images of so-called outer beauty, a concept that changes from one moment to the next, it is easy to get caught up and compare yourself to “societal norms.” For me, I embrace and celebrate the unique qualities that make me beautiful, and I do the same for all of my clients. One of the most important aspects of beauty is self-acceptance. When we accept ourselves for who we are, we can build on those foundations and become more beautiful than ever. That includes our flaws (if any), and those radiate a genuine confidence that is truly captivating and original. Also, one of the simplest things you can do is wear a smile; this lets your inner beauty shine through for all to enjoy and appreciate.

What’s one tip or piece of advice you would give when it comes to beauty?

One important tip when it comes to beauty is to prioritize self-care. You need to take care of yourself mentally, spiritually, and physically, which can significantly enhance your natural beauty. I take pride in my naked skin and do not hide behind makeup.

Victor Hugo once wrote that “true beauty need not the foreign aid of ornament.” So let’s be real to ourselves at the very least and strive to become more beautiful in our naked skin. How can we do this? A key aspect is to establish a consistent skincare routine, nourish your body with a well-balanced diet, drink plenty of water, exercise regularly as part of your daily activity, and prioritize your sleep. This is why prioritizing self-care is the key to true, long-lasting beauty.

What makes you beautiful? We are the most beautiful when we buck the societal norms and trends that keep us scared, stuck, and small. When you begin to embrace your inner and outer beauty from a place of true empowerment rather than constantly trying to fit yourself into the box of popular culture, you are able to show up in the fullest, deepest expression of yourself. To me, that is beautiful.

What’s one tip or piece of advice you would give when it comes to beauty?

Stop looking at mass media images and Instagram for your definition of beauty. Instead, search for your own race, age, gender, and size online (i.e., 40-yearold, plus-size mom). Surround yourself with beautiful images and people who look like you who challenge the concept that something is wrong with you. When you look at these confident, beautiful people, you’ll see your own body reflected back in a way that makes you examine your negative self-talk. In other words, take time to cultivate and create your own ideology of beauty rather than consuming what you have been fed. Believe me, it is worth it!

Being SingleCelebrate

I’m going to let you in on a little secret: Being single isn’t something you should be ashamed of at any age. I love to remind our team of matchmakers and my clients that you should approach every relationship knowing that it could be for a season, reason, lesson, or a lifetime. We are all on different journeys, and your romantic relationships are only one aspect of your life.

So celebrate your singlehood and embrace the strong, beautiful, incredible woman you are. It can be a wonderful stage in your life, and you shouldn’t let others influence your choice to date or not date.

Embrace Being Single

As a professional matchmaker for over 30 years, I, too, felt social pressure during my own singlehood. I thought because of my career, I should be ashamed that my marriage ended. My divorce felt like a personal and professional failure, causing me to suffer from imposter syndrome. All the reasons I was single were valid, but I still struggled with a critical inner voice. Learning to embrace being single was a game changer for me and has become incredibly useful for my clients on their dating journeys.

Find the “Tiny Little Joys”

Did you know that our brains have a built-in negativity bias? It’s an evolutionary technique

28 FALL 2023

that helps us survive, but in modern day-to-day life, it can keep us from enjoying the good things. If you tend to focus on the negative aspects of being single, I encourage you to do something called “Tiny Little Joys.” Throughout the day, try to recognize the things you enjoy about being single. For instance, you have greater freedom to pursue your hobbies and interests, you can focus on yourself and your own personal growth, and you never have to consult with a partner on finances or where to vacation.

Recognize and Celebrate The Joys of Being Single

Your time as a single woman should be celebrated. It’s a period of transformation, discovery, and self-love. So, if you’ve recently found yourself unpartnered, don’t despair. Heartbreak hurts, but you are stronger and more capable than you know, and you deserve to celebrate yourself, no matter your relationship status. The wonderful thing is that if and when love comes knocking on your door again like it did for me, you will be ready to embrace it with open arms and an open heart. It feels all the more remarkable after having the time you need to heal, repair, and grow.

A Celebration OF YOU

Happy two years to this wonderful magazine! I love being a contributor. It’s such a special place where women can find information, tips, and common ground. Cheers to celebrating all of our beauty!

I find beauty in many things, and being out in nature is one of my greatest beauty practices — until I sat down to write my article and a bird pooped on my foot. Nothing more beautiful than that, ha! Really though, beauty can take on many forms for people. While I love pampering myself, getting my facials, and using products that help my skin, that outward beauty is only skin deep. We need to feel just as beautiful inwardly and learn to find and celebrate beauty in the small things.

I’m lucky to have found my way on that path of beauty in my business as a Life Coach.

30 FALL 2023

Here are 6 of my favorite ways to celebrate beauty:

1. Be in nature - When the sun hits my skin, and I feel the natural elements around me, I feel so much more connected with my heart. Being in nature helps you find your true nature — just don’t forget to wear sunblock (I love Sun Bum).

2. Value yourself - Understanding your worth will bring you clarity and create a path for new goals and opportunities.

3. Think kind thoughts about yourself - When you think kind words about yourself, your inner light brightens the room.

4. Surround yourself with only people who lift you - When you remove the negative people in your life, you allow your beauty to shine through.

5. Laugh - Laughing brings joy and fulfillment to your soul and opens your heart to new experiences.

6. Sleep - Getting sleep will keep your mind healthy and your thoughts kind.

Feeling beautiful is a gift we all can give ourselves. It helps me, personally, to see myself differently, no matter where I am. So when I put on my Jimmy Choo heels and Betsy Johnson dress, nothing can stop me from living in the moment with love.

Love, Ari

O’LIVE YOUR LIFE

Anita Heidema and Dario Tomaselli are experts on the Mediterranean lifestyle movement (not the diet), which advocates a simpler, healthier, happier way of living, and they are passionate about living that lifestyle themselves. Like many of their followers, Anita and Dario found themselves consumed by busy careers and disconnected from each other, their friends, their families, and the joy they knew life was supposed to bring. However, Anita and Dario have found that the simplicity of a Mediterranean lifestyle ensures that they get better with age — like a fine wine they pair with one of their gourmet meals.

Dario is an Italian-born, renowned chef, and Anita is a rich-life strategist, author, and coach. While conducting a culinary retreat together in 2017 in a castle in Italy, they combined his passion for cooking and her mindset coaching, which became the key ingredients for a transformative experience with their audience.

After launching their website and brand O’Live Your Life, Anita and Dario decided to seize the opportunity to live and work as international travelers. In August of 2022, they embarked on a 14-month-long adventure, traveling the globe and sharing their message worldwide. They feel blessed to have had this opportunity to truly embrace the Mediterranean lifestyle, traveling and immersing themselves in new cultures while nurturing their thriving online Mediterranean

lifestyle community and growing their popular International Dinner Club.

Dario and Anita credit three distinct lessons for giving them the courage to leave the security and structure of their lives in North America, embrace this trip of a lifetime, and start celebrating their new Mediterranean lifestyle.

34 FALL 2023

1. With age comes wisdom and the knowledge that life is short. The time to do something big is sooner rather than later.

2. After living the Mediterranean lifestyle for several years and teaching others how to live it, too, they realized they could do it from anywhere — and so can you.

3. Gratitude is everything, and the more you focus on what you’re grateful for, the easier it is to embrace getting older (and better).

Small Town, Big Heart

There’s been a lot of buzz about Bozeman over the last few years. Between the hit series “Yellowstone” and arguably the most beautiful landscape in the country, Bozeman has exploded as a top travel and wedding destination. And while the rest of the world is finally catching on that it doesn’t get any better than Bozeman, the people who live there have known it all along. Bozeman is a place where community, connection, and creativity thrive, where people are prized over profit, and where beauty is found and celebrated in even the most unassuming places.

“Bozeman is an incredible, tight-knit community full of many wonderful people, and it’s truly an honor to get to live, work, and love the outdoors alongside each and every one of them,” said Brynn Gestson, Operations Manager of the Downtown Bozeman Partnership (DBP). From a business perspective, the city is bursting at the seams with female entrepreneurs who support and collaborate with one another to inspire their neighbors and enrich their lives. Even so, the businesses featured here and the women behind them — Mallory Dabney, Sue Stark, and Valentina Carder — stand out among the crowd.

When Mallory Dabney moved to Bozeman in 2014, she wasn’t sure of her next move. She eventually found her place as the store manager at Heyday, a lifestyle and gift boutique featuring carefully curated and hand-crafted collections of home goods, jewelry, beauty and wellness

products, items for littles, and more. Mallory went from manager to owner after purchasing the business in 2019, and with a team of 30 incredible women, she has carried on Heyday’s legacy of being a ‘happy place’ for local patrons while promoting collaborations with local artists, neighboring businesses, and non-profit organizations. These creative partnerships are one of Mallory’s greatest joys and sources of inspiration as a business owner. “I think everyone has a unique perspective to share and a unique offering, and when you bring all those people together, magic happens,” Mallory shared. “That’s what Heyday’s all about — bringing people together in celebration and also celebrating these really amazing talents that all of these makers have. We’re just so grateful to be a platform for it.”

Sue Stark landed in Bozeman more than ten years ago. Perfectly situated in what’s known as the ‘Valley of the Flowers,’ she was drawn to floral artistry. “I didn’t choose the flower life; the flower life chose me,” she joked. Sue quickly learned all she could about floral design and running a business, and in 2015, she opened Wild Blume, a floral design studio specializing in an aesthetic that’s elegant, elevated, and a tinge wild. “It’s English garden meets Montana landscape,” Sue described. In addition to creating floral dreamscapes for weddings and special events, Sue often finds herself working with fellow local business owners and artisans, drumming up unique experiences for neighbors and visitors, something she

Written by Jordan Peden 36 FALL 2023

says is part of the exceptional fabric of the town. It was that very creative and collaborative spirit that inspired her to start the business. “The amount of women-owned businesses, the amount of support that’s offered, and the creativity and ingenuity in this town make it a really special and magnetic place. It’s a small town built on big ideas and people who are willing to take risks,” Sue shared.

Valentina Carder immigrated to the US from a small village south of Russia to pursue a career in esthetics, makeup, and special effects. She was practicing microcurrent facial technology in Southern California and Las Vegas when a trip to Bozeman sparked a longing for something new. She made the town home in August 2020 and quickly began giving life to her vision of creating a space for both self-care and community, founding Glove Beauty Shop just a few weeks later. At Glove, Valentina applies her longstanding relationships with vetted clean beauty brands to provide clients with a luxurious boutique experience. Her beloved team and lead esthetician Linda, a microcurrent specialist who’s perfected facial massage techniques, help her achieve the highest standard of care. “I wanted to create something outside of the traditional sales experience in the sense that when you come, our goal is not to sell you things; our goal is to find something that will help you,” Valentina shared. “I want it to be personalized, but I also want to connect on a more intimate level, where you know we genuinely care.”

There’s a lot to love about Bozeman. The land itself is enough to win you over, and the vast amount of womenowned businesses is impressive, to say the least. But Bozeman’s greatest asset is its people. They are creative, they are driven, and they are kind. What’s not to love?

PEACE = BEAUTY

As we all move along on our journeys and experience new ways of living and learn how to curate and shape our own lives, we become aware of the environment, routines, and activities that have the potential to serve us in the very best way at that particular moment. The exciting part is that it is never too late to reshape an area of your life that is no longer serving you.

For me, I have learned that PEACE = BEAUTY

As full as our lives become, I’ve learned that the more peace I can create within myself and the world around me, the more beautiful I believe my life to be. I have put specific practices into place that not only serve me but, in turn, serve my family and those I value the most. These practices have become the foundation for my life, and they create a world where I can thrive and be the best me, which is the true essence of living a beautiful life and feeling your own sense of beauty deep within.

1. Morning Prayer and Meditation - This time is locked into my daily schedule. The peace that comes from starting my day by reading an encouraging passage, hearing a meaningful song, an inspiring quote, or even just being alone with my own thoughts grounds me and is a game-changer. It improves my ability to focus on the most important things in my life. After the kids leave for school, and it’s quiet mid-morning, I spend my time in prayer and meditation, which sets my day up for success.

2. Movement - It’s a must for me. It releases any stress I am feeling and fills me with energy. I feel strong and encouraged that I took the

time to actually take care of myself. Besides all of the health benefits we know about, the mental clarity that comes from movement is what I long for the most. So, whether it’s a hike in the mountains, a stretch session, or a sweaty workout, moving your body is a key factor in reshaping your heart, mind, soul, and overall health.

3. Body Love, Inside and Out - I have learned that if I don’t take care of myself, not only do I suffer, but so do my family and the people I care about most. Taking the time to serve ourselves daily is proven to be the ultimate flex when it comes to creating a life you love. If you don’t feel good and have zero motivation or interest in engaging with certain areas of your life, reshaping your routine and purposefully putting practices into place that uplift you will allow you to reset yourself. Not long ago, I had to stop and completely reshape areas of my life that were not working for me. Now, I have recommitted myself to eating cleaner, hydrating enough, staying on top of my supplement schedule, being consistent with my skincare routine, dry brushing, etc. Even just putting lotion on after the shower helps me feel like I’m giving back to myself.

4. Giving Love to Our Home - Organization, removing clutter, cleaning out closets, planting the garden, lighting a candle, and even having fresh flowers or clippings from nature all create the environment I prefer for my home. My husband and I have been very intentional with our home when it comes to decor. We want our home to be a place of peace and refuge. We

40 FALL 2023

reshapewithalilandry.com

want our things to be meaningful and tell the story of our lives. Our home is an expression of us, and we love that our home is a place that encourages us to live our best life.

5. I’m All About Organization - As a wife and mother of three kids, organization is key. I have a couple of specific written organizers that help me keep track of my life. They are separated into categories for my personal, family, and business schedules. At the beginning of each month, I spend time mapping it out; it has really helped me stay on track with managing my family and showing up for them in the best way while also allowing me to keep up with the personal care routines and business projects I am so passionate about. This organization method has been refined and reshaped over the years as life changes and expands. However, staying organized with some structure has allowed my life to free flow in the most beautiful way.

6. Quality Time - There is no better way to foster a true sense of gratitude in your life than spending quality time with your loved ones. I love family adventures on the weekends, cooking dinner together, dinner dates with my girlfriends, and experiencing new things outside my comfort zone. Those moments become the essence of having peace and living your own definition of beauty from the inside out.

Affirm Your BEAUTY

In a world that often prioritizes external beauty, it’s important to remember that beauty is much more profound and personal than physical appearance alone. It encompasses the wholeness of our being, from our thoughts and emotions to our actions and attitudes.

Positive affirmations can play a vital role in cultivating a deep appreciation for this multi-dimensional beauty within ourselves.

Here are five positive affirmations to help you embrace and celebrate your beauty:

1. “I am beautiful, inside and out.” This affirmation highlights the importance of recognizing beauty in its entirety. Beauty is not only about your physical appearance but also your inner qualities. When you acknowledge your beauty both inside and out, you foster self-love and acceptance, strengthening your sense of self-worth.

2. “I am deserving of love and respect.” This affirmation reinforces the belief that you are worthy of love and respect, regardless of how you look. It is an assertion of your inherent value as a human being and a reminder that your beauty gives you the right to be treated with kindness and dignity.

3. “My beauty is unique and cannot be compared.” This affirmation emphasizes the importance of embracing your individuality. Individuals are unique, and so is their beauty. By affirming that your beauty cannot be compared, you reject societal standards that might diminish your self-

perception, promoting self-appreciation and boosting your confidence.

4. “I am grateful for my body and all it does for me.” This affirmation encourages gratitude for the physical aspect of our being. Our bodies are incredible machines that enable us to experience life. By expressing gratitude for your body, you cultivate a healthy relationship with it, fostering body positivity and respect for your physical form.

5. “My confidence makes me radiant.” This affirmation recognizes the connection between self-assuredness and beauty. Confidence contributes greatly to personal charisma and attractiveness; believing in yourself lets your inner beauty shine brighter.

By repeating these affirmations, you focus on the positivity and strength within yourself, enhancing your self-esteem and overall mental well-being. Remember, beauty is subjective and radiates from within. Through these affirmations, celebrate the beauty that truly defines you.

Stop Sleepwalking THROUGH LIFE

Are you stuck in a mundane routine? Do you find yourself doing the same things day in and day out? Since the pandemic, many of us have gotten too comfortable with stale patterns. We’re working or attending school remotely, ordering our groceries online for delivery, Zooming for meetings, Doordashing for lunch, and slowly moving further and further away from human interaction.

It’s time to wake up and crawl out of the rut. It’s time to step up and show up for life so we can look back without wishing we’d done more. If you need some motivation to step out of your comfort zone, hold tight to these inspirational quotes:

“Do one thing every day that scares you.”

“What got you here won’t get you there.”

“Do things before you’re ready.”

Wellness Products To Create Consistency In Your Day

One of the things I’ve learned in my journey to optimal health and wellness is that the key to consistency with nutrition and exercise is not found in a diet. Consistency is found in creating healthy habits that make up an effortless and sustainable lifestyle.

Diets teach us to focus solely on food and exercise but don’t teach us anything about building a solid lifestyle foundation that works for our individual life.

We often neglect important pillars of our day that set us up for success, like spending a few minutes in the morning having quiet time and getting organized for the day or having a good nighttime routine that allows for a good night’s rest.

Instead, we often put all our energy into focusing on what we are eating (or not) and, in reality, ignore a very important piece. Foundational habits like sleep and your morning and night routines play a HUGE role in your decisions around food and exercise.

Think back to the times you got “off track” with your nutrition and exercise. If I had to guess, most of them would be from being too tired, stressed, or unprepared.

Establishing solid morning and night routines absolutely sets the stage for how you go about your day and the choices you make.

I want to share with you my 5 Favorite Wellness Products that have become staples in my overall wellness routine.

1. The Five Minute Journal by Intelligent Change - This journal has become the center of my morning routine. It serves as a gratitude journal and asks my favorite question: “What are three things that will make today great?” This allows me to create intention in my day and make it awesome.

https://www.intelligentchange.com/products/thefive-minute-journal

2. Infrared Sauna Blanket by HigherDose - I am completely obsessed with this sauna blanket. Not only does the infrared heat help with detoxification, better skin, muscle recovery, and increased serotonin, but it is also super relaxing. I use this time in the morning

for my meditation, followed by a cold shower to really boost the endorphins.

4. Kroma Wellness 5-Day Reset - Although I am not a fan of detoxes or cleanses for weight loss, I do believe in resetting your body back to a vibrant baseline with whole-food nutrition. This is why I love the 5-Day Reset from Kroma Wellness. This is NOT a 5-day cleanse where you feel deprived, hungry, and miserable. Each day of the reset leaves you feeling satisfied, energized, less bloated, clear-headed, and amazing.

5. Sleep Bundle + Serenity Gummies by Cured Nutrition

- My go-to as a part of my night routine is Cured Nutrition’s Sleep Bundle. Their Zen and Nightcap products are loaded with magnesium, functional mushrooms, adaptogens, and full spectrum CBD and CBN, which will help you get to sleep and stay asleep, promote complete deep and REM sleep stages, and wake up refreshed. I also like to add their Serenity gummies to the mix, which makes the perfect trifecta for synergistic slumber.

Beauty Dear Q&A

Q: Everyone is talking about peptides. What are they, and how do they help?

A: Peptides are chains of amino acids that are naturally found in the body and can also be ingested through food and supplements. Peptides are involved in a number of important processes, including weight management. Weight management peptides may offer benefits like improved body composition, weight loss, appetite/cravings/portion control, regulation of blood pressure and glycemic control, increased energy and metabolism, cardiovascular benefits, and a decreased risk of developing metabolic syndrome.

Q: What is a rhinoplasty and what are some reasons a person would seek having it?

A: A rhinoplasty is a surgery that can change the appearance of the nose to fix a hump on the bridge, lack of a bridge, large tip, wide nostrils, or droopy tip. There are many other requests, but these are the most common.

The surgery involves changing the underlying structure of the nose to which the skin conforms.

Q: I keep getting cold sores at the worst times! What can I do to prevent/heal them?

Cold sores are caused by a virus. According to research, too much arginine in your diet, stress, and heavy sun exposure can definitely increase your chances of an outbreak. The best prevention is to strengthen your immune system by having good eating and sleeping habits. Over-the-counter topical ointments and antiviral prescription medications can be effective, but I strongly suggest laser therapy for chronic sufferers. Laser therapy is painless, speeds healing, and can even prolong lapses of recurring activity.

Q: I hate the thought of wearing glasses, but the older I get, the harder it is for me to read my phone texts and menus. Please help! The thought of readers makes me cringe.

A: Yes, changes in our eyes are almost inevitable, but wearing glasses may not be! Multifocal contact lenses are an exciting option that works for most patients. It is often not perfect, and we like to say “20/happy, not 20/20.” It is multiple zones of power in a very thin piece of plastic, but when it works, my patients tell me it is life

changing. Ask your optometrist if you are a candidate at your next appointment.

Q. I am 43 and go in for a physical every year. He always says everything looks good, but I don’t really know what I should be asking or checking when it comes to my heart. What questions should I be asking my primary care physician?

A: When patients see their primary care physician, they should be asking about their numbers and what they mean. For instance, what is my blood pressure? Is my body mass index in the normal, overweight, or obese range? What are my cholesterol levels and what is the ideal range for me? What are my risks for getting heart disease and what steps can I take to reduce my risks of developing heart disease? It is good to discuss what types of exercise you are able to perform and whether you would benefit from a dietary consultation. You should come prepared, know your family history, and keep your own chart of your blood pressure readings and prior cholesterol levels. You also want to develop a jointly agreed upon “health plan” or goals for the upcoming year and discuss potential progress checkins or short-term goals.

Q: I am 45 and fearing menopause. What are some tips to keep my fitness at its current level?

A: Several factors affect our fitness as we age: hormone changes, stress, and, worst of all, inflammation. Work on decreasing inflammation and stress and getting enough solid sleep. The key to beating aging is to be active. Too many of us are tired and want to rest, making us more tired. If you really want to get a good sense of where you are, start by getting a full blood work inventory to check your sex hormones, food sensitivity, and stress levels. But most importantly, get out and keep moving!

Q: I love being outdoors, how often should I get my skin checked?

A: Have a full skin examination annually and more often if you have a first-degree relative who has had melanoma. The key is to focus on preventative care and to identify suspicious lesions early. Look for any growing, darkening, or painful lesions. Sun exposure is cumulative, and approximately 90% of skin aging is due to the sun. One in five Americans will be diagnosed with a type of skin cancer by age 70, so wear sunscreen and SPF clothing daily to better your odds.

Answered! Your Questions

Q: What are a couple of key questions should you ask your physician prior to an aesthetic treatment?

A: Ask them to see before and after photos so you can make sure your aesthetic expectation aligns with them. Ask them what their philosophy on aesthetic interventions is. You are looking for a physician that recognizes that it is a marathon, not a sprint, and want to make sure they have a plan for you, not a quick fix.

Q: A: Are tanning beds really bad for you?

A: Yes. Tanning beds are a big no-no. The years of tanning can expose your skin to unregulated harmful ultraviolet lights (UVA & UVB) that can lead to early signs of aging and the development of skin cancers. Using tanning beds before the age of 35 can increase your chances of developing melanoma by 59%, and that risk increases with each use. Women younger than 30 are six times more likely to develop melanoma if they engage in indoor tanning bed practices. Indoor tanning

can increase the risk of developing a squamous cell carcinoma by 67% and basal cell carcinoma by 29%.

Q: I like my job, but I don’t want to work forever. How do I know when I am financially able to retire?

A: There are two parts to retirement; one is financial and the other is emotional. The financial part of retirement is based on the income you need versus the income you will receive. You need 70% to 100% of your current income to live your current lifestyle. You can expect to take 3.5%4% of your liquid retirement assets a year during retirement. Add that to your social security benefits and/or pension, and that’s your expected retirement income.

Q: I live in Florida, so sun protection is key, but I am overwhelmed by the options. What are some tips for finding a sunscreen that gives me the coverage I need without harming the planet?

A: Shopping for a sunscreen that will benefit you and not harm the environment can be tricky. When shopping for sunscreen, prioritize the following ingredients: non-nano zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, as they provide broadspectrum protection without penetrating the skin or harming aquatic life. Avoid oxybenzone, octinoxate, and other chemical filters, as they can damage coral reefs and may have potential health concerns. Opt for mineral-based sunscreens and remember to reapply every two hours for optimal protection!

it sluggish. This can then potentially cause a buildup of undigested food in the digestive tract, which can then cause problems such as fermentation, bloating, toxicity buildup, and a potential imbalance of bacteria that can upset everything. Juices, however, are readily digested by the body and nourish the cells within, avoiding this effect.

Q: What are your thoughts on juicing (fruits/ vegetables)?

A: I am a huge fan of juicing, but the main ingredient in any kind of juice should be green vegetables and not fruits—otherwise, you’re simply aging your skin with every sip.

You’ll be eating three main meals a day, with a beauty burst of juicing in between to feed your cells with extra greens and other natural boosts. Every time we consume a full meal or snack too much, our digestion must work harder and harder; by constantly snacking, you can overstress digestion, which makes

10 TIPS to Improve Your Mental Health

There aren’t many guarantees in life, but after two decades of practicing psychotherapy (and about that long being in psychotherapy myself), I have identified ten actions that, if done consistently, result in optimal mental health.

1. Go To Therapy - Therapy isn’t just for those with a mental illness. Therapy has helped me develop stress and anxiety management skills, navigate difficult relationships, learn assertiveness techniques, and improve self-esteem. And sometimes, it’s just comforting to have a place to share my thoughts and feelings without judgment and without overwhelming my loved ones.

2. Practice Gratitude Daily - Over time, a daily gratitude practice changes the way you think and the way you perceive the world by training the brain to be more in tune with the good. A consistent gratitude practice benefits mood, sleep, stress management, and overall life satisfaction. There are many different gratitude apps, lists, journals, and meditations. Find what works for you, and make it part of your daily routine.

3. Exercise - You don’t have to run marathons or lift heavy weights; just find a movement that serves you. Exercise not only releases those feel-good endorphins but also helps boost your confidence!

4. Nurture Your Relationships - Life can be hard sometimes, and we can’t do it alone. Connect with people you love regularly. If you take care of your relationships, when the time comes that you need help, your support squad will be happy to assist.

5. Develop Hobbies - During the pandemic, some of the most resilient people were those with hobbies. Hobbies make us more interesting, can improve cognitive health, reduce stress, and boost selfesteem as our skills improve. Additionally, hobbies can be a way to expand our social network.

6. Meditate - Start with short guided meditations and work your way up. Meditation can give you a

sense of calm that will benefit your emotional wellbeing and overall health. Remember, it’s called a meditation practice. The more you practice, the more efficient you’ll become at quieting the chatter in your head.

7. Set Boundaries - Setting boundaries will help you to feel more in control. You’ll conserve emotional energy and create healthier relationships.

8. Prioritize Self-care - Allocate time for the things that invigorate, relax, and fill you up. Identify your “feel good” activities and make them happen. A self-care routine reduces anxiety, depression, and stress. It improves resilience and happiness while increasing energy and decreasing the likelihood of burnout.

9. Ask for Help - Some view asking for help as an indication of weakness, but, in actuality, asking for help demonstrates strength, confidence, and resourcefulness. It builds connections with others, increases productivity, decreases fatigue, and creates learning opportunities.

10. Do Uncomfortable Things - Doing uncomfortable things is necessary for growth. That thing that makes you uncomfortable (getting honest in therapy, quitting that dead-end job) is a steppingstone to where you want to be.

Don’t become overwhelmed by this list. Add one action per month, and in less than a year, you’ll be better off mentally than you are today.

1. Plastic surgery is only about vanity.

Myth. Plastic surgery can help improve self-esteem and confidence issues that affect a person’s quality of life. We see this, particularly, in our weight loss patients. These individuals have gone through a lot of hard work physically, emotionally, and mentally to get to where they are, regardless of whether they chose to do it on their own or have bariatric surgery. It takes a tremendous amount of mental dedication and lifestyle change, and patients come to us having lost all this weight yet still seeing a reflection in the mirror that doesn’t complete the entire transformation; in fact, they often see a constant reminder of their old selves. Plastic surgery completes the transformation and positively affects their self-esteem and confidence.

2. Plastic surgery is scarless.

Myth. Scarring occurs whenever you have surgery, whether with laser modality or the scalpel. Our bodies heal and regenerate through scarring. As plastic surgeons, we have the skill to hide scars and create illusions that are more pleasing to the eye. However, genetics play a factor in how a patient heals. We cannot control nature, so people will still heal as indicated by their genetic makeup. As plastic surgeons, we do treat the tissue more delicately, and we reinforce our incisions in layers more than some other surgical specialties to help scars heal better and make the outcome more aesthetically pleasing.

3. Plastic surgeons are the same as cosmetic surgeons. Myth. Cosmetic surgeons are their own specialty. They only perform cosmetic surgery. Plastic surgeons have completed years of specialized training in plastic and reconstructive surgery. As part of that training, we cover every kind of reconstruction from head to toe. We cover burns and pediatric congenital anomalies, like cleft lip and cleft palate. We cover hand surgery and, of course, cosmetic surgery. Our training is diverse, allowing us to recreate an aesthetically pleasing outcome. Cosmetic surgery is just one aspect of our extensive specialized training. This is indicated in our board certification. Many doctors have tapped into the world of plastic surgery/cosmetic surgery. These doctors include gynecologists, dermatologists, ER physicians, internists, family practice doctors, and dentists. And yes, they are board-certified; however,

5 MYTHS OF PLASTIC SUGERY

their board certification is in their own specialty, not the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery. This often creates a great deal of confusion for patients, and it’s important for any individual considering surgery to know the full training of their physician.

4. Plastic surgery under anesthesia is unsafe.

Myth. Unfortunately, social media has become a very popular platform for patients to get information. As much as it can be a valuable tool, it also comes with the circulation of misinformation, opinions, and myths. A qualified plastic surgeon can deliver safe and healthy aesthetic results. A qualified anesthesiologist can provide safe anesthesia. The notion that surgery or anesthesia is universally unsafe is a myth. The key takeaway is to be evaluated by a board-certified plastic surgeon to ensure you are a good candidate for the procedure and for undergoing anesthesia.

5. If you have plastic surgery, you will look like a different person.

Myth. We live in a world today where things are very extreme, and, unfortunately, there are cases where we see individuals who look different or even cartoonish after plastic surgery. There are cases where bad decisions or outcomes happen, and these become exasperated on the internet and social platforms. However, these cases aren’t the norm, and if you choose to have a procedure, you don’t ever have to look ‘like you’ve had work done.’ You can have subtle and natural-looking changes and improve your aesthetic in many ways. It’s important to do your research and share your goals with your doctor so that you are aligned in the outcome.

Having plastic surgery is a big decision and is about doing something for yourself. As surgeons, we are here to help you reach your goals and celebrate that journey with you.

Dr. Azharian is a board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon. Dr. Azharian approaches her patients with the understanding that all people have unique needs to accomplish their goals while maintaining their individuality. NORMALIZING IVF:

HELPING CHILDREN UNDERSTAND THEIR CONCEPTION STORY

Bringing a child into the world through in vitro fertilization (IVF) can be a beautiful and life-changing experience for many families. However, discussing the topic with children can sometimes be challenging, especially as they grow older and begin to understand the complexities of conception. As parents, it’s natural to want to protect our children from difficult or uncomfortable conversations, but it’s important to be open and honest with them. By normalizing IVF and discussing it with our children in an age-appropriate manner, we can help them understand their story and feel empowered by their genetic identity.

Why normalizing IVF is important for children

• Reduces Stigma

• Empowers Children

• Promotes Openness and Honesty

• Fosters Understanding

• Supports Future Decision-Making

Explaining IVF to children of different ages and circumstances

Children of different ages and circumstances may have different levels of understanding and may require different strategies to explain the IVF process in an age-appropriate way.

• Preschoolers: At this age, simple explanations are best. You can explain that some people need extra help to have a baby, so they seek this help from special doctors. Age-

appropriate visual aids like pictures or diagrams can also help explain the process.

• Elementary school-aged children: These kiddos may have more questions about IVF. Try to use simple language and avoid medical jargon. You can explain that the doctor used

56 FALL 2023

eggs and sperm to create an embryo, which was then placed in a womb to grow into a baby. You can also talk about how this process helps families who might not be able to have a baby on their own.

• Tweens and teens: Older children may have more complex questions about IVF and how it works. It’s important to be honest and transparent with them, using more scientific language and detailed explanations as appropriate. You can talk about how the doctor extracts eggs from a woman’s ovaries and combines them with a man’s sperm in a lab to create embryos. You can also discuss the different types of IVF procedures, such as intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) or pre-implantation genetic testing (PGT).

• Non-biological children: Children conceived through donor eggs or sperm may have additional questions about their conception story. Be honest with them about their biological origins, and answer their questions in an age-appropriate manner. You can explain that a donor helped you have a baby and that a biological family may differ in some ways, but the love you share is the same.

Understanding IVF is a process for children, and they may have questions and/or concerns along the way. You can help guide them on this journey by creating a safe and supportive environment, emphasizing your love and commitment to them, and providing ongoing support and communication.

Conclusion

Normalizing IVF and helping children understand their conception story is an important aspect of parenting for families who

have used assisted reproductive technologies to conceive. By embracing their unique family story and sharing it with their children, families can help create a more inclusive and accepting society that celebrates the diversity of family structures and experiences.

What inspires me?

I have been fortunate enough to have incredible women in my life, both friends and family. My mom has always been a giver and extremely selfless. She is my sounding board and a true inspiration to me. I am also a teacher moderator of a girls’ empowerment club called The Riveters at my high school. Their positive energy, dedication to helping others, and belief that the world can become a better place is an inspiration to me daily.

BEAUTY STARTS UNDER MY SKIN

I’ve been in front of the camera since I was 18 years old, and from that aspect of my life, I have a certain understanding of what “beauty” is. However, I am also a World Arts and Cultures Major from UCLA. I have studied many different cultures, their artistic and cultural expressions, and their ways of expressing themselves individually. I’ve seen firsthand so many incredibly beautiful people who don’t fit the media’s standards of beauty.

In Japan, they measured my features to determine whether or not I was beautiful. When I was a dancer, I was considered “beautiful” or “not” depending on my shape, hair color, and build.

Beauty is an impossible thing to chase. Standards change, fads come and go, and beauty marketing is ruthless. The only beauty you can truly depend on is your inner beauty. When you feel beautiful, you are beautiful — no matter what you look like. This is a truth that cannot be disputed. Sure, there are beautiful women and men out there who don’t feel beautiful, but you can feel the difference when you spend time with them. A beautiful person is easy to be around, lovely to be in the presence of, and seems to allow their inner essence to flow outward without masking it.

So, for this beauty issue, I want to share some of my favorite apps that help me feel beautiful. On the days I just can’t see my own unique beauty, these meditations help me find my way home. Because I do believe that our natural state, when we are at home with ourselves, is the most beautiful one.

Insight Timer App

This app provides insightful, bite-size thoughts to help my inner peace stay peaceful. I’ve been using this app for about ten years. Here are some of my favorite people:

• Jennifer Percy- Her voice has such an incredible, soothing quality; she knows how to relax the body and mind to prepare for a nourishing night of sleep.

• “Yoga Nidra”

• Sarah Blondin - I love her philosophies. She is very gentle and has a way with her words that feels poetic and feminine in her wisdom. These are my two favorites:

“Remembering Your Worth”

“I would like to give you permission…”

• Davidji - He is a wise soul. When I listen to his wisdom, I feel connected to the world around me in a loving way. We need more of that in this world, and when I start with myself and connect this way, beauty is revealed in all I see.

“Surrender To the Silence Within”

• Lisa A Romano - She was one of the first people I reached out to for “Carrie Ann Conversations.” I have been listening to her for years, and she has so much insight into codependency and surviving narcissists. She’s really an expert and feels like a friend who has been through it with you and offers gentle yet firm support as you find your way toward healing.

“You Are Enough” (5 minutes)

Breathing App

This app is a lifesaver. There are four breathing techniques you can use to recenter yourself during or after a stressful day. You can also design your own program. I first used this app when I had to do treatments in the hyperbaric oxygen chamber, which is about seven feet

long by two-and-a-half feet tall. I’m a bit claustrophobic, and this app helped calm my nerves so that I could get the treatment I needed to heal an injury.

The Class

These workouts are a mixture of yoga and energy work designed to help release held emotions. I absolutely love them! The classes make me feel energized, refreshed, and free. Plus, I enjoy working out in the privacy of my own home and the convenience of not having to travel. I highly recommend it. In fact, if I were ever to create a workout regimen, it would be this type of class. It combines what I know of Eastern healing, energy work, yoga, and movement, along with breathing exercises and incredible playlists that inspire and awaken our deepest selves. The app also features shorter workouts for when you just need a moment away from your life to recenter and feel good again.

SELF-ESTEEM NURTURING IN A SOCIAL MEDIA WORLD:

It’s no secret that social media platforms have become an integral part of our lives in today’s digital age. New platforms are constantly popping up with fresh and exciting ways to share your life. While they all offer tons of benefits, they also significantly influence our self-esteem and overall well-being. This is especially true for women. As a digital marketer, I live with my phone in my hand, and I’m in and out of social media apps all day. Constant exposure to carefully curated highlight reels can lead to negative comparisons, feelings of inadequacy, and a decline in self-esteem — even for us professionals. But as social media becomes increasingly ingrained in our lives, we must be sure to take steps to protect our peace as we navigate this world.

Now more than ever, it’s essential to remember that we have the power to shape our online experiences and protect our self-worth. So, from someone who’s on social media all day long, here are six practical tips to keep your self-esteem intact and craft a positive experience online.

1. Cultivate Self-Awareness:

Start at the foundation. Mel Robbins started a revolution called the High Five Habit by asking people to high-five themselves in a mirror daily. A simple act or word of kindness towards

yourself before you even unlock your phone is a great way to start. If you feel confident in your strengths and core beliefs, you won’t seek validation from the online world.

2. Curate Your Social Media Feed:

Your social media feed should be a source of inspiration and positivity. Surround yourself with accounts that promote self-acceptance, body positivity, and personal growth. Cultivate your online space like you would your home by only inviting things into it that add value to your life. Clean up your follow list once a month. If an account is not making you feel good, delete it. If someone is bringing you down, block them. If a celebrity is making you feel inadequate, unfollow them. You’ll find that you won’t even miss their content, AND they’ll be replaced by something that makes you feel good.

3. Embrace Authenticity:

One of the most powerful ways to combat social media pressures is by embracing authenticity. Resist the temptation to portray a perfect image of your life. Share the ups and downs, the successes and failures, and the challenges you face. When you show vulnerability and authenticity, you connect with others on a deeper level and inspire them to do the same. You may even find that you build a community around the journey you’re on.

4. Practice Digital Detox:

I know this is easier said than done, especially if you need to be online for your job. However, occasionally disconnecting from social media can work wonders for your selfesteem. Schedule regular periods of digital detox to recalibrate your mindset and regain perspective; put it in your calendar so you can’t ignore it. Spend time nourishing your mind, body, and soul. Remember, your worth is not determined by the number of likes or comments you receive online.

5. Seek Genuine Connections: Social media allows us to connect with like-minded people from all over the world. Invest your energy in cultivating meaningful relationships both online and offline. Engage in conversations that uplift and inspire you. Don’t fall into the trap of arguments or negativity. Foster connections based on shared interests, common values, and genuine support. True self-esteem stems from authentic connections with others rather than the number of followers you have.

6. Don’t Compare:

Comparing yourself to the highlight reels of others is a recipe for self-esteem disaster. Remember that social media is a curated version of reality. Set realistic expectations for yourself and acknowledge that everyone has their own unique journey. Focus on your personal growth and progress rather than comparing it to someone else’s.

Social media is a wonderful tool for expression, creativity, and connection. Just be sure to use it wisely.

Five Meaningful WAYS to Celebrate Yourself

coffee, I was also really lonely. Spending a lot of time alone gives you space to get to know yourself. If you’re anything like I was, you haven’t spent much time truly connecting within. Between binging Netflix series, overworking, overeating, (insert your favorite distraction), inner avoidance can become a full-time job. But that summer, I decided to lean inward and uncover the depths of my true self.

As the days passed, I began peeling away layers of old beliefs, shedding outdated ideas, and unraveling the stories I had told myself. I was no longer defined by my past or the expectations of others. I was free to explore my passions, interests, and dreams without limitations. With each revelation, I grew to like the person I was becoming and learned to celebrate her, too.

It was 2013, and my long-distance boyfriend of four years was finally moving from NY to CA to be with me. So, when he told me he didn’t love me anymore, I did what anyone would do: I quit my job, sold my car and belongings, put what was left in a 5x5 storage room, and took off to Italy for the summer. I was determined to mend my broken heart in the hills of Tuscany by sitting in cafes, drinking wine and espresso, and writing the book I’d always dreamed of but never took the time to write.

My time in Italy didn’t go exactly as planned. While I did sit in cafes drinking lots of wine and

Here are some ways to begin celebrating all of yourself and who you’re becoming:

Celebrate Self-Evolution

Finding yourself is an ongoing journey. As you grow and evolve, your understanding of who you are will deepen. Embrace change and view it as an opportunity for growth, self-realization, and celebration.

Celebrate Your Uniqueness

Embrace your quirks, strengths, and weaknesses. Recognize that each facet of your being contributes to the beautiful tapestry of your existence.

Celebrate Setting Boundaries

Establish clear boundaries in your personal and professional life to honor your needs and protect your well-being. Celebrate your ability to assertively communicate your boundaries and create a space that allows you to thrive.

Celebrate Self-Expression

Find joy in expressing yourself authentically. Celebrate your creative endeavors, whether it’s through art, writing, music, or any other form of self-expression. Embrace self-expression as a means of celebrating your true self.

Celebrate Self-Love

Shower yourself with love, kindness, and compassion. Celebrate the person you are

becoming and the love you have for yourself. Embrace self-love as a daily practice and celebrate the incredible worthiness that resides within you.

Remember, you are worthy of celebrating the incredible person that you are. Allow yourself to be amazed by the strength, resilience, and beauty that lies within.

Don’t Sweat THE SMALL STUFF

Irecently decided to tackle some muchneeded decluttering around the house. You know, go through all the “stuff” we stash away — memoirs, our kids’ school papers, yearbooks, holiday decorations, etc. The job is far from over, but it’s reminded me of what truly matters when it’s all said and done.

One of my favorite parts of this process has been looking back on special moments in time, like the infamous graffiti wall in my daughter’s room. What started in her early teens as simple notes between her and a friend written near the light switch on her wall, eventually evolved into several years’ worth of thoughts, pictures, and drawings covering the whole wall with moments in time. If I’m being honest, I wasn’t thrilled at first. But I eventually saw the amount of creativity, conversation, freedom, and joy it generated; it was amazing! It also caused quite a buzz with other parents and friends. It’s one of my most cherished memories, and I’m so glad I captured it in photos.

Reliving these ‘growing up’ chapters has taught me a few things about what’s really important when it comes to raising kids.

• It doesn’t matter if the ice cream is dripping all over the clothes as long as you’re having fun together at the ice cream shop.

• Let them run and play in the rain without an umbrella.

• Yes, you can go to that mid-week concert for your child’s favorite artist. Make the drive, stay out late, and send them to school the next

morning. (I’m having flashbacks of Ashlee Simpson at Universal Studios).

• Take the spontaneous surprise weekend trip to wherever. Explore and splurge on something spectacular while there. Ours was a helicopter ride over NYC. No regrets there!

My daughter turns 30 this fall, and those memories are priceless. It may sound cliche, but creating special experiences in the midst of all that’s going on is so important. Surely the last few years have taught us that much. So, here’s to creating more walls of a different kind.

• 12 times to play Santa (maybe)

• 12 spring breaks

• 13 first days of school

• 6 months of drivers permit

• 12 or so Easter baskets

• 20 loose teeth (tooth fairy chances)

• 1 first date

• 1-2 proms

• 1-2 chances to see them in a cap and gown

• 1 chance to teach them to be good humans!

The days seem long but the years are short… This is why NOTHING matters more to me than making memories with my kids and their friends.
