This issue is special, y’all! For those who have been following us, you know that our big 2024 event was canceled due to hurricanes in Florida. It’s been an interesting ride behind the scenes, and while we had to make a few pivots along the way, in the end, the event came out better than we could have expected.

The RED Event was nothing short of magical. It was a celebration of beauty in every form, where energy, creativity, and connection flowed freely. It was a true embodiment of what happens when diverse individuals unite, each bringing their own spark, creating something unforgettable. It was a powerful reminder of the beauty of community and the strength that comes from celebrating each other’s unique gifts.

To me, beauty is never just about what’s on the surface; it’s about the feeling it gives us. It’s the inner light we shine. It’s an essence that I hope you’ll feel as you flip through the pages of this issue. Beauty is not something we chase; it’s something we own.

This issue is dedicated to embracing the star within each of us. No matter where we come from or the paths we’ve walked, we each carry a unique light worthy of recognition. It’s a tribute to self-expression, individuality, and the incredible potential within all of us.

We’re honored to feature the beautiful, incomparable Kristin Chenoweth, whose life in the spotlight exemplifies how we can use our unique gifts for good.

This issue also introduces an initiative I’ve been passionate about for some time: The Positive Impact Project. I’m so excited to share this new way of doing business with everyone. It incorporates many of the elements of Ask Us Beauty, and it is a dream come true for me to provide scholarships for students.

As you journey through this issue, I hope you feel the magic, the beauty, and the energy that comes from celebrating stories, talent, and authenticity. This is what unlocks the power to shine brighter than we ever imagined. It’s our time to embrace the power within and celebrate the stars we are.

FROM A DIFFERENT LENS PARTY

Pure magic, period. Sometimes, in our heads, we start with ideas, and our ideas spin and get bounced, and combine with others’, until boom- the seed to something life-changing emerges. The Red Event was nothing less than a sprinkle of ideas that morphed into the perfect combination of love, passion, friendship, diversity, thanksgiving, eloquence, and, let me just say overall beauty.

As you know, beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, so let’s revisit the Red Event through the eyes of an attender- me, the editor…

First of all, who needs an excuse to dust off blacktie attire and put on heels and make up? Not me! And, surely, not my daughter Rachel! When Rachel, who runs her own marketing agency in New York, heard about the event, she immediately wanted to join in on the festivities. Nothing beats having your daughter fly in to make reels and help celebrate pure beauty.

From Tampa, we had a very short drive to Nova535 in St. Petersburg. Surprisingly, none of us had ever been to this hidden gem. Upon arrival we were stunned by the quaintness of the brick building and the wonderful line of guests, anxiously waiting for the doors to open. And when they did, we were greeted by the flash of cameras and a majestic red carpet, giving everyone that special “Oscars” touch. To the left was an ivy wall with the perfect photo op, that we opted to table for later, because we were all too curious to see what awaited inside.

Beautiful, smiling people buzzed through the space. It was amazing to witness so many unique individuals, all there to celebrate and support our magazine, our contributors, and our powerful mission. Everyone there was connected somehow someway, and on February 7th, lots of my own personal connections crossed paths in perfect unison. Only minutes in, from across the room, I spotted them- our “soccer friends”. I hardly recognized the soccer parents as we left our workout clothes behind and reconnected in our evening wear

over cocktails and endless delicious appetizers. Amazingly, it was as if no time had elapsed, and our friendship circle was right where it had left off ten years ago. As if we were celebrating the circle of life, we went outside and took turns jumping on the spinning 365 photo shoot. With our hands in the air and not a care in the world, we spun and laughed as the cameras captured the moment.

Our minds kept spinning all evening as we immersed ourselves in the non-stop action. Groups of friends, including us, continued making fun memories by cramming into the iconic photo booth. This was no ordinary booth. Every individual or group that took a snap became the cover of our magazine, how great was that?! I didn’t have a chance to have one done, but I was mesmerized by the person doing caricature drawings. And as I thumbed through the books that were strategically left on the tables, the music switched gears and models of all shapes and sizes strutted down the steps and onto the runway with confidence, absolutely stunning- all of them. And, maybe the biggest highlight of the evening were the dancers. The diversity was perfectly insane. There was a faultless mixture of professional dancer acts mixed in with acts highlighting dancers with special needs, who, let’s face it, stole the show.

As I recall the night, I can’t help but smile as I try to remember all of the details of the evening. The event seemed so seamless, that it is hard to imagine that the original date of the event was in October, but who could have predicted back-to-back hurricanes in Florida? The last- minute pivot was imperative and productive, and the date was swiftly moved to the first plausible alternative, which landed in February. At first, it seemed like we’d have to wait an eternity and all the hard work was for naught, but then, using our own mantra of positive thinking, why not February? I mean, what month screams more red and love than February, right? So, everything began to take a new shape, the stars started to align (literally), and Red Event 2.0 emerged. Somehow all of the loose ends were tied up and wrapped with a beautiful bow and pulled off with precision, and we were able to make a social contribution toward a great cause, yet another silver lining. But the true icing on the cake

was the actual cake. I mean, how was it even possible to have a scrumptious three-tiered, multi-flavored cake displaying all of our magazine covers, WHAT! Another fun fact is that Amy, our co-founder, and her husband’s anniversary is, you guessed it, February 7th. So, what seemed like a hurricane hiccup, was made into pure sweetness. When everyone left, Amy and her husband Brent were able to celebrate with another bite of cake. Yes, she had her cake and ate it too, proving, once again, that everything happens for a reason.

But wait, just when I thought I couldn’t enjoy the event any more, I heard that I had won one of the many amazing raffle prizes! A free skin care basket is always welcome in my world. I would like to thank all who contributed to this event in one form or fashion (pun intended). It is only through your love, passion, and support that our magazine is even possible. And, of course, our readers who truly make our world go round. We cannot thank you enough, and this event was only a small token to celebrate everyone’s on-going love and support, and from the bottom of our hearts, we hope you thoroughly enjoyed it and can feel our love and gratitude. Take it from me, a scrupulous editor, from my point of view, the Red Carpet event needed no edits. It had just the right amount of love and sparkle, and all the stars came out to make it an overall beauty.

Sarah Lototskyy, co-owner of Dynasty Dance Clubs for the last 11 years and a professional ballroom dancer, is a true visionary and the heart behind the Dynasty Stars Special Needs Program, which she founded in 2016. Fueled by a deep passion for empowering individuals with special needs, Sarah, along with the help of her team, created a space where the transformative power of ballroom dancing could help them thrive. Witnessing firsthand dance’s incredible neurological and physical benefits, she expanded her mission to include programs for individuals with Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Q&A

How did your upbringing and environment shape your passion for dance and how you connect with people through movement?

Dance has existed in my life since I was very little! I was in front of the TV, marveling at the afternoon TV shows in Brazil. They were full of dance and high-energy performances.

Looking back at the beginning of your dance career, what has been your biggest lesson learned?

The biggest lesson is [that] dance always helps us bring what we have best inside to the outside and bring any insecurities to the outside so we can work on those and improve ourselves overall.

How do you balance technique with making dance fun and accessible for everyone?

When I create the choreography for a class, I look to create something that can cater to all levels of dance. It is important to include some challenging moves as well so the advanced and beginners can enjoy and feel extra good accomplishing that special moment in the song. They will also feel motivated to continue progressing in their dance journey.

How have you seen dance transform people physically and in terms of confidence, mental well-being, and connection with others?

I always say that Dance starts from the heart. It comes from the soul first and then spreads to your whole body. When you come to my class, the main focus is to have fun and bring that positive energy up. When you have fun, you let the best of yourself shine. After all, we are not happy all the time, every day. We have problems, maybe a sick relative, that bill at the end of the month, and dance is that amazing tool to fortify your good vibes and make you stronger to deal with day-today life. Waking up and conquering the day is a defiant act always.

With social media shaping how people experience dance, how do different platforms help creators share their message and connect with a wider audience?

Social media channels bring so much to people. They can transform lives! Someone can feel inspired, get up, and start moving and dancing, even if little by little. I consider myself a catalyst for those who wish to start dancing and having fun and maybe never felt like they could before. I am honored to contribute to someone’s wellbeing and positivity in their life.

Kristin Chenoweth is more than a Broadway legend, she is a radiant force of goodness, an unwavering advocate for the arts, and a woman whose extraordinary journey has touched the hearts of millions.

From her humble beginnings in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, singing gospel music in church, to captivating audiences with unforgettable performances on iconic television shows like The West Wing, Pushing Daisies, and Glee, Kristin is a powerhouse talent across multiple platforms. And her Broadway credits are overwhelmingly impressive, with a list too long to note. Still, that won’t keep us from listing a couple of our personal favorites: her role as Sally Brown in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown and her iconic portrayal of Glinda the Good Witch in Wicked, a performance that has become a cultural touchstone.

For Kristin, the key to personal growth and selfexpression is embracing one’s unique qualities and recognizing the power of individuality. She believes that every person has a “superpower,” and that finding it is integral to living a fulfilling life.

For Kristin, self-expression is not just about talent, it’s about using your inner light to uplift others. It’s about being authentic and unapologetically yourself, even when times are tough. This philosophy has shaped her career and continues to guide her in everything she does.

Kristin’s return to Broadway in the original musical The Queen of Versailles marks a new chapter in her illustrious career. Reuniting her with Wicked composer Stephen Schwartz, the show tells the story of Jackie Siegel, a woman determined to build the largest private home in America, mirroring the Palace of Versailles in Orlando, Florida. Kristin portrays Jackie Siegel, a character whose pursuit of the American Dream leads her down a complex and often heartbreaking path.

“The musical explores the Siegel family’s pursuit of the American Dream at any cost,” Kristin explains. “It’s a fascinating story, and audiences will be both surprised and entertained by what unfolds onstage.”

Taking on this role has given Kristin new insights into the challenges of fame and loss. “I used to be pretty judgmental about people online and in reality television. I thought, ‘Oh, you’re having a hard time with being famous? That’s what you signed up for.’ But when you have true loss, it is heartbreaking to have it play out in front of strangers. That’s hard. I’m empathetic. I’ve dealt with it in my own life, being a person that people may know. It’s how you deal with it; it separates the men from the boys.”

Kristin’s incredible work ethic is a cornerstone of her success, but maintaining her physical and mental health has become even more essential as she gets older. To prepare for her Broadway performances, she has adopted a rigorous routine that includes hot yoga and a focus on heart health. “I do over 8,000 steps in one show, and that’s eight times a week. I’m 56 years old, so I have to start preparing now, and I am doing that,” she shares. “It’s harder as you get older. When I was younger, everything came so easily. But it’s not stopping me. In fact, I feel stronger and more inspired than ever to be healthy.”

For Kristin, staying in top shape goes beyond aesthetics, it’s about longevity and sustaining the energy needed to give her all on stage, night after night.

“Me? I like to be a light in a dark world. On days when I can’t be, I find myself finding those who have light that I can borrow.”

Kristin has long been dedicated to supporting young artists through her nonprofit organization, the Broadway Bootcamp, which she founded to give children and young adults the opportunity to develop their talents in a nurturing environment. “Fifteen years ago, my hometown of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, built a performing arts center, naming the theater after me,” she reflects. “A big responsibility but an exciting one. My dad challenged me about what my legacy might be and how to involve the theater.”

This challenge led to the creation of the Broadway Bootcamp, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. The program offers intensive musical theater training while fostering a sense of community among the students. “I literally watch young artists have the ‘click’ moment,” Kristin says. “I watch them in real time ‘get it,’ the training, the voice, the body. I watch them find their community. I’ve watched kids make friends for life, and that is as important to me as the training they receive.”

One of the most rewarding aspects for Kristin has been watching her former students go on to achieve their dreams. “I have now seen the fruits of our labor in kids becoming professionals,” she notes proudly. “I have a former camper going to make her Broadway debut in The Queen of Versailles. Her name is Tatum Hopkins—remember her name.”

For Kristin, art isn’t just about creating performances, it’s about creating life-changing experiences. Whether or not students go on to become professional actors, Kristin believes the lessons they learn through the arts will benefit them for the rest of their lives. “Whether you become a professional actor or not, this camp helps build life skills for their future,” she says, emphasizing the broader value of the program.

Kristin’s career has been a testament to the power of perseverance and dedication. When asked what advice she would give others about following their dreams, she offers a simple but powerful insight: “If you can’t see yourself doing anything else and being happy, then you’re in the right place. But if you can see yourself being happy doing another career, then by all means, please explore. This life is hard. It requires full commitment and lots of sacrifice, but it is so rewarding.”

Beauty, for Kristin, is not just about appearances, it’s about inner happiness. “Beauty is happiness within.… and lots of water.”

Reflecting on her journey, Kristin offers one final piece of advice to anyone starting their careers: “Don’t sweat the small stuff.” It’s a reminder that not everything needs to be perfect and that perseverance and passion truly matter.

Beyond her talent as a performer, Kristin embraces beauty as a means of self-expression. Sheloves experimenting with trends and isn’t afraid to create her own. “I love trends just like the next person, but I also love starting them. And if no one picks up on it, but I’m happy, I go for it,” she shares with a playful spirit.

Her love for beauty also comes from family. “My cousin Cherri-Lyn sold makeup for a long time. She was the first one to do my brows for the Miss Oklahoma pageant. I became aware of how important the look of brows is because they frame our face,” Kristin recalls. This early experience left a lasting impact on her approach to beauty, teaching her the value of self-care and the art of enhancing one’s features in an authentic way.

As Kristin Chenoweth continues to light up the stage and inspire others, her journey is a powerful reminder of the importance of embracing who we are, pursuing our dreams, and supporting others along the way.

Mango Ceviche

Ingredients

• 1 large red onion, thinly sliced

• 1 large red pepper, small diced

• 1 large ripe mango, peeled, pitted, and cut into 3/4-inch diced

• 1 large green mango, peeled, pitted, and cut into 3/4 inch diced

• Juice of 4 limes

• 1/4 teaspoon salt

• 1 fresno chili, seeded and finely diced

• Leaves from 2 cilantro sprigs, finely chopped

Instructions

Put the red onion in white vinegar for 10 minutes while you prepare the other ingredients.

Place the diced mangoes in a bowl and add half the lime juice and salt. Taste for balance and add more of both if necessary; you don’t want it to taste too sour. Add the chile, then drain the onion and add it along with the cilantro leaves.

Stir everything gently to combine and then leave in the fridge for 5 minutes to chill and marinate.

Serve in individual large glasses or bowl.

Guacamole

Ingredients

• 3 avocados, ripe

• ½ small yellow onion, finely diced

• Half of cup of white vinegar

• 2 roma tomatoes diced

• 3 tablespoons finely chopped fresh cilantro

• 1 jalapeno pepper, seeds removed and finely diced

• 2 garlic cloves, minced

• 2 limes, juiced

• ½ teaspoon sea salt

• Pepper to taste

Instructions

Slice the avocados in half, remove the pit, and scoop into a mixing bowl.

Marinate white onion in white vinegar for 10 minutes

Mash the avocado with a fork and make it as chunky or smooth as you’d like.

Add the remaining ingredients and stir together. Give it a taste test and add a pinch more salt or lime juice if needed.

Serve the guacamole with plantain chips.

The Art of The Self-Care Mindset

As a psychologist, I frequently encounter patients experiencing burnout, depression, anxiety, fractured relationships, and exhaustion. The culprit: a lack of understanding of self-care.

What exactly is self-care, you ask. It seems like something that takes a lot of time and/or costs a lot of money, neither of which you’re ready to part with. But I have good news! Self-care isn’t about time or money.

Self-care has become a buzzword, often influencing us to splurge on spa days and lavender-scented bubble baths. These activities, while nice, only provide temporary relief. After all, we eventually have to leave the tub. What I’m encouraging you to consider is a more sustainable solution—a self-care mindset.

When we’re distressed and depleted (you know, that feeling when you’re one slow Wi-Fi connection from your breaking point), it results from lousy thoughts, relationships, decisions, or actions. A self-care mindset, however, guides us to nurture ourselves by prioritizing health, happiness, and peace. It’s an internal process rooted in self-compassion and personal growth.

A self-care mindset has two parts: a reflection and a response. First, a self-care mindset guides you to ask yourself (reflection), “is this thought, relationship, decision or action contributing to or contaminating my health, happiness and peace?” If the answer is contaminating, a self-care mindset prompts you to do something different. It requires an action (response) to correct damaging thoughts, address unhealthy relationships, make wiser decisions, and/or change harmful behaviors.

For example, a thought like, “I ate two pieces of cake. I’m disgusting and a failure,” can lead to feelings of shame, self-loathing, insecurity, and depression. The self-care

mindset reflects, “These thoughts are contaminating my health, happiness, and peace. What can I think or do that promotes my health, happiness and peace instead?” The self-care mindset response may be to replace those unkind thoughts with more gentle thoughts like, “I enjoyed the cake and I’m happy I could celebrate my sister’s birthday with her.”

If you dread every phone call from your friend Jane because she’s always asking for favors and you’re exhausted, the self-care mindset may reflect, “What can I do to improve this relationship? Is there any action within my control that promotes my health, happiness, and peace?” The self-care mindset response may be boundary-setting or an honest, assertive conversation with Jane.

With a self-care mindset, you’ll shine like the star you are by prioritizing your well-being in a society that normalizes surviving on iced coffee and sheer willpower. Embracing this mindset is like learning a new language. It takes practice and consistency, but you’re worth it! And remember, when you take care of yourself, you inspire others to do the same.

Iswear, having kids has taught me more about self-acceptance and the beauty of differences than any amount of self-help books or therapy ever will. The irony that I now write self-help for part of my bread and butter isn’t lost on me, but here we are.

Many of us, if not most, spend our lives trying to fit into invisible boxes that “someone,” be it the media or our mean Aunt Mildred, told us that we needed to fit into as children. Then, if we are truly lucky, we have someone or something in our lives that forces us to embrace our differences instead of pushing them away. That something for me was the wish that my daughter sees how amazing she is, even with a genetic condition like Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, or EDS. (Read that as super bendy, collagen deficient, and gets hurt very easily.)

But because of this condition, she is an INCREDIBLE artist who can bend her hands in ways that most can’t.

Maybe you’re reading this and you’re experiencing that same awakening right now. Sadly, we often wait until midlife to embrace what sets us apart. So let me ask you this: where are you different but beautiful? What talent or quirk do you have that’s not “normal” but makes you incredible?

In my new book 48 Hours to Change Your Life, one chapter discusses finding your fairy wings. Just like Tinkerbell, we are all gifted in some form or fashion. No matter how we resist it, there’s something inherently special about us. Many believe it has to do with those degrees and certificates, but that isn’t always true.

My daughter started teaching herself to draw during the 2020 pandemic. She spent hours on YouTube watching tutorials and discovered that her inability to hold a pencil “correctly” wasn’t a handicap but a superpower.

For me, it’s been what I can only describe as an energetic ability to know or sense people’s stories and pain. When I was still doing massage therapy, my clients would always ask me how I knew where their pain was. I couldn’t explain it, but I just did. When I could no longer do hands on work, I realized that this quirk wasn’t restricted to my hands but extended to energetic healing. Now, I specialize in resiliency, somatic healing, and healing the parts of your personal story that cause you pain.

The takeaway? We should all be more like Tinkerbell. We should lean into our quirks and unexplainable talents as a thing of wonder instead of something to be squelched. After all, that’s what most of us want for those we love; so let’s turn that love and acceptance onto ourselves. Oh, how different our world would be.

Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

The psalmist David reflects on the marvel of human creation in Psalm 139:14: “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that all too well.” This verse reminds us that each person is a masterpiece, crafted with intention and purpose. Embracing our individuality is an acknowledgment of God’s handiwork, celebrating the distinct qualities that make us who we are.

Strength Through Christ

The Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Philippians, emphasizes the boundless potential we possess through our connection with Christ: “I can do all this through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13). This affirmation encourages us to pursue our passions and express our true selves, knowing that we are empowered by a divine source. Our unique talents and abilities are not just personal attributes but are gifts meant to be shared, reflecting the glory of God.

Encouraging One Another

The journey of self-expression is not solitary. Hebrews 3:13 urges believers to support each other: “But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called ‘Today,’ so that none of you may be hardened.” By fostering a community that celebrates individuality, we create an environment where everyone feels free to express their true selves. This mutual encouragement helps prevent the stagnation of spirit and promotes growth and authenticity.

Trusting in Divine Guidance

Embracing our unique path requires trust in God’s plan. Proverbs 3:5-6 advises: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” By surrendering to divine guidance, we can confidently navigate the journey of self-discovery and expression, knowing that a loving Creator directs our steps.

The Power of Words

Our verbal and nonverbal expressions have the power to impact others profoundly. Proverbs 18:21 highlights this truth: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue; those who love it will eat its fruit.” By expressing ourselves in uplifting and inspiring ways, we honor our individuality and encourage others to embrace theirs. Our words can be a source of life, fostering a culture of authenticity and mutual respect.

Living Out Our Purpose

Ephesians 3:20 speaks to our extraordinary potential: “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.” Recognizing that God’s power works through us, we are called to dream big and pursue the purposes planted in our hearts. Our individuality is a vessel through which divine possibilities are realized, impacting the world in ways we may have never imagined.

Embracing the star within us is a journey of recognizing and celebrating the unique qualities bestowed upon us by our Creator. By grounding ourselves in authenticity, we find the courage to express our individuality, inspire others, and fulfill the divine potential embedded in our being. Let us shine brightly, not only for our own fulfillment but as a testament to the wondrous works of God in each of our lives.

Change. Evolution. Reinvention. These words can be either terrifying or inspiring. The difference is in our mindset.

In the wake of AUB’s Red Event, it’s more evident than ever that if we are to thrive, we must embrace these three concepts while forging onward with our unique gifts.

I started Poesy Co. to help small business owners and individuals share those gifts with their communities, not realizing that, as a business owner myself, I would also have to share mine—proudly, often, and with folks I’d previously registered way beyond my caliber.

Putting myself out there in this way, pitching potential clients on why they should entrust their messaging to my talent, was miles from my comfort zone. But, if I was going to make a go of it, I knew I had to get comfortable being uncomfortable.

These last six months have been a time of tremendous personal and professional growth, as I’ve navigated rooms and made space for myself at tables where I never thought I belonged. More importantly, the things I’ve learned have translated into my business in a way that equips me to advise and connect with my clients more authentically. Because I’ve been there, too.

So, in this first official edition of Poesy Co.rner (do we like the name?! I’m still workshopping it), I wanted to share a few of my favorite lessons in, what I like to call, marketable vulnerability.

1. Believe you belong.

Being in business means putting yourself in places that give you the best opportunity to grow. These spaces can often be intimidating, but by believing you belong, you beat imposter syndrome at its own game. As one of my favorite speakers, Tosca DiMatteo, says, “You belong in every single room you’re in. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be there.”

2. Show them who you are.

Business doesn’t always have to be so buttoned up. In fact, business thrives on connection. And you know how you connect? Being yourself. Whether you’re networking, advertising, or meeting with clients/ customers, the person on the other side is looking for a human to connect with. So show them one.

3. Get involved.

One of the best, and easiest ways, to put yourself out there, is to get involved with local groups and organizations that support your community: become an active chamber member, sit on a non-profit board, volunteer for a committee, join a giving circle if you have the means. It may not be the most monetarily lucrative thing you do with your time, but it will fill your cup, help others, and build relationships. And that’s what it’s all about.

Confidence is key; even if you have to ‘fake it till you make it,’ you’ll still get there. I’m proof!
